I am planning on running the Tomb of Horrors (dundundunhhhh), for my group as a humurous one off during Christmas break.

We are now asking for anyone who wants to make a pregen character to post them here and we will run them through the TOMB, and keep everyone updated on thier progress.

The Rules:

All WoTC content allowed except for the environment ones (stormwrack, etc).
I don't care about what level of optimization they have.
NO CHEESE.
NO METAGAME knowledge of TOH.
Stats: 4d6 seven times drop the lowest. (I trust you , you don't have to post the rolls), or a 32 point buy from the DMG.
level ten,
WBL, no Custom items, no more than 1/4 spent on any single item.

Thats about all, have fun. Characters will be taken first come, and probably distributed at random.

ps. I am no artist, but if somebody wanted to draw a trophy of some sort, It can go to whoever's character lives longest, or whoever dies in the most interesting way. or both.

Much thanks to anyone who helps out.

Fresh meat er.. Characters so far

Mortimer Rivers :Human Rogue
Arca :Human Druid
Grazvel :Human Duskblade
Vuliev the Flail :Human Cleric
Deitrich : Human cleric

I dont know, but why not tell your players to just come prepared with five or more characters they themselves have made? You could say its 'for some crazy idea you had.' Character creation is one of my favorite parts, and personally I would be pretty hard pressed to play some guy I didnt actually build myself. I just wouldnt like it.

Also, make you sure you drop the hint that at least two of their characters have to be rogues. heh.

I downloaded a chargen program from kazaa a few years ago... It would allow you to make X number of people, with Y levels in classes Z and/or W, T, U etc. It would also take about 5 tries to get a thief with ranks in hide or move silently. Oh yeah, it was also, 3E, core only. So it wasn't that good back then, let alone now.

You might also want to just have them find a anyone can use it wand of true resurrection that brings them back with their stuff. Like 8 or 10 charges should be sufficent.

That's what I was thinking as well, cuts down on the paperwork.

They're going to start dying as soon as they open the door, no need to trash a bunch of character sheets, especially for a humourous one-off

You might also want to imply that they shouldn't get too attatched to these guys. Mmm.... Redshirt Rush!

The problem is, they don't like making characters, (especially in a situation where they will probably die) so I was hoping to save myself some prep time.

Barring something that makes the characters automatically, is there and easy way online to create pc's? Similar to the 3.0 Cd.

Edit:: Yeah, my default option is to have them each make one pc who miraculously has like three or four identical twins who happen to to be right behind the party, named similarly and equipped exactly the same as thier brothers.

Well, if you are really set upon lots of characters then this website (http://dnd3rd.sourceforge.net/)and this website (http://www.pathguy.com/cg35.htm)are not too bad in terms of saving time.

You could also just make all the characters yourself and let them either draw from a hat or just divvy up the characters.

Alternatively, there was a 3.0 book called "Enemies and Allies" that has the 'iconic' characters (Mialee, Lidda, Regdar, etc.) statted out for levels 1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 (or something like that). You could just have them play those, if you can find a copy of the book (I managed to pick up a copy at a used bookstore for about $3).

You could also put out a call to the forumgoers here for characters. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would be willing to make characters just for fun. Then, when the game is over, you can post how all the characters died.

That actually could be a pretty cool idea. I am going to float these ideas out to my group.

I would have to insist that Metagame knowledge of the tomb be limited when designing thes Pc's though.

I'd be willing to do that (even though I should be writing term papers and studying for finals instead).

EDIT: I don't know anything about Tomb of Horrors, other than it's deadly legend, so I'm good on the whole avoiding metagaming.

Don't start yet, though, I need to get approval from my group, because I know at least one of them is usually strongly against Pregen cahracters (although this is kinda unique and I think i could get them to try it).

Inform the group that anyone who wants to go through the trouble of making their own characters can do so, but that there will be pregen characters available for anyone who just wants to throw more meat into the grinder.

You'll need some tables, and some dice.

A table for race, one for class, and one with a series of stats. Roll everything randomly, play a half-orc wizard with maximised wisdom.

At least they won't be attached to them...

Well, my group really likes the idea. The one guy does want to make his own, but everybody else is excited about your idea.

So, Long story short, I will be taking up to twelve characters if anybody wants to make them, I will provide status updates and a final description.

I am no artist, but if somebody wanted to draw a trophy of some sort, It can go to whoever's character lives longest, or whoever dies in the most interesting way. or both.

What do you mean by "splat books"? You need to be more specific.

Stats 4d6 seven times drop the lowest. (I trust you , you don't have to post the rolls) I would suggest the 32 point buy (http://home.san.rr.com/thegraggs/dnd/Misc/pbcalc.htm) method from the DMG.

By "splat books" I mean anything that has the WOTC stamp on it's cover. basically any of the expansion books ( BoED, ToB, BoNS, etc). I think I have at least access to all of them.

As for Point buy, Yeah, OK you can roll or do a 32 point buy for stats.

The Dragon magazine had a couple years back, an ongoing thing where they took things from computor games and D&D'ed them up.
One of those things were the Lifestones insipred by, I think, Asherons Call.

Basically an obelisk like stone, Can't be moved, but on occation teleports away from its homeplane for a week or so and right now it is just a few minutes walk from the tomb (what are the odds :D ).

Any sentient creature (int 3 and up) can attune themselves to the stone and if killed he will respawn at the stone at full health etc, except for 1)a temp negative level that goes away in an hour (might be a couple hours). Those negative levels do stack however they noted and 2) the item of highest value stays behind (use that or not).

When the week is up the stone teleports itself back to its homeplane and it can no longer be used by the players or anyone else in that reality. Note that the players might not be around for when the stone appears, perhaps it has only a day left.

Also fun to think of that not only PC's can use the stone...

I''d like to make a character, too, but first I'd like to add an idea.

One of my friends recently told me about a game called Paranoia, wherein everyone dies a whole bunch. The way they handle it is that every character has 6 clones, and every player brings a 6pack of some sort of beverage. When their character dies, they start drinking the beverage, and when they finish, their clone is teleported back into the group.

Just a thought. I'll get to working on that character...

4d6 seven times, ommit lowest...is that the lowest dice roll per stat as well as the lowest total stat?

For example, if I rolled (for one of the stats) a 2, 3, 3, 6, would that be total of 12 or 14?

I know normally it'd be 12, but the wording was slightly interpretable...

Anyway, I'm throwing in Kasaad Shadowweb, Chitine Rogue!

Nah, no problem, just thought I should check before my character was too good or too bad, because I know that if I didn't know I'd end up deciding the wrong way not matter what! I might not get Kasaad up until tomorrow, but he'll be here! And I would assume ECL 10, so a level 6 Chitine Rogue, with two racial HD and +2 LA fits perfectly! Umm...he's a level eight character, so do I equip him with the wealth of the character level, or effective character level? I'm making him with ECL (Effective Character Level) for this, let me know if you'd rather for wealth for ACL (Actual Character Level).

Alright, two strategies:

1) Continually take 20 on each and every square you want to walk through, and anytime you find a trap, cast Protection From Arrows and use the Arcane Trickster's Ranged Legerdomain ability to try and disable it from far away. Should you fail, use Rope Trick and Tiny Hut to rest and recover. :smalltongue:

2) If 1 is too cheesy, play as regular wizard/rogue designed to find and disable traps and give the party a safe place to sleep/recover.

Also, Arcane Trickster's wording on spellcasting advancment was ambiguous, so I erred on the side of cautin only advancing spells per day (it might also be taken to mean new spells are gained per day, including a new level of spells)

Of course, that's very cheesy and even rather evil.:smallamused:

Warforged Artificer 10

1) Darkwood Body (the body feats are just cool)
3) Extend Spell
4) Quicken Spell (Bonus)
6) Persistent Spell
8) Contingent Spell (Bonus)
9) Wand Surge

Possessions:
Minor Schema of Unfettered Heroism
Wands of: Scorching Ray (Energy sub if desired), Magic Missile, Vigor, Knock, Mage Hand (Greater), Dispel Magic, Identify, Summon Monster, Augury, Protection from Arrows, etc- these can literally have as few as one charge

Why he’s amazing:
1) Start each day by marking off two third level infusions to infuse Metamagic Item (Persistent) on both the Minor Schema and the Wand of Vigor, activate both
2) For the rest of the day, you gain a free action point each round
3) You can spend an action point instead of a charge on a wand, per Wand Surge
4) Freely activate your various wands at no actual cost as often as you want, and with the right tool, solve anything
5) Warforged don’t “die” at -10, they just become inert until brought above it
6) With Vigor’s fast healing, it doesn’t matter how much of a beating you take, at 30 HP a minute, 60 minutes an hour, as long as you don’t get “killed” near the end of the day, you'll eventually return
7) By applying Contingent Spell to any number of other spell trigger/completion effects (Scrolls of Celerity, Delay Death, Negative Energy Protection, Spell Immunity, Resilient Sphere, etc) he can have a veritable arsenal of nearly free (one 3rd level infusion, one 1/ever spell effect, even from a self-created Spell Storing infusion and party member) swiss army knife abilities

An actual sheet will eventually follow

The same “trick” is also available to anyone with a 5th level arcane spell and the means to circumvent the +6 CL from Persistent Spell.

Give me a bit to work out the precise stats, but I've had this idea rolling around in my head for a few days. Basically, at level 10, it would be a Human Druid 5/Master of Many Forms 2/Warshaper 3. Basically, you can turn into almost anything you might need to be. It's especially nice once you get to Drd5/MoMF3+/Wrshpr5, since you can now change shape as a move action, and change shape as many times as you want within the duration of a single wildshape on only a single use of the ability. Downside is that to make the most of it, you're going to be using the natural weapons of whatever you turn into. Make friends with someone who can cast Magic Fang.

If it's only going to be a one-off, why not use a system where character creation is quicker, eg Dungeon Squad, Tunnels and Trolls, Mazes and Minotaurs etc?

I think it's because more people are more familier with Dungeons and Dragons. DnD I know. The others...not so much.

From the posts at the start of the thread, I think it's a pre-published scenario. Which means it would take a fair bit of work to convert it to another system.

Kaasad Shadoweb Chitine Rogue
Tori Gallows Arcane Trickster

Umm... What is the precise distinction between optimization and cheese?

SoD
2007-12-08, 03:51 AM
Optimisation=useful character. Really useful character.
Cheese=half-ogre with spiked chain.

Optimisation=helpful cleric useful in a healing, or a battle, situation.
Cheese=CoDzilla.

Optimisation=kobold trapsmith.
Cheese=Pun-Pun.

I think he meant optimise as much as you like, but no broken characters.

So a little update.

We are beginning the game this upcoming wednesday so characters need to be in by then.

I wil probably post the first update sometime thursday.

Spend the other 22,000 as desired, but make sure to have thieves tools, longspoon thieves tools, and a couple ten foot poles.

For skills: Put one rank in every skill, Max out Search, Disable Device, Open Lock, Ijatsu Focus (if allowed), Slight of Hand (if using Ijatsu Focus), Tumble, UMD, Knowledge (Religion, Arcana). After making sure you have ONE RANK IN EVERY SKILL, assign the other skill points as desired.

Arcane Dillante: Lesser Clerity and Cunning Surge is great (although possibly cheesy), otherwise utility spells.

(PS, all the FoI's give you a total of 20 IP).

Check Dungeonscape p.15 for all other pertinent information.

(Much of the post above mine is good, except I think my feat selection is better and I cannot stress enough how much ONE RANK IN EVERY SKILL can save your live, as adding your level to any skill check that you have at least one rank in can prove very useful).

FoI is not horribly cheesy, as even with all of your abilities (barring the celerity+cunning surge thing) active, you can either maintain for burn it all up, neither of which is horribly powerful, especially compared to full casters and considering the dungeon being run.

I had a pretty grusome character that I took to a Free for all death match. I don't remember everything but here are the basics.

I was a gestalt: I know you cant gestalt PRC's but you can alternate. My final build was.
Fighter 10/Rogue 17
Kensai 10/ Shadow Dancer 3

32 point buy
My race was human to start and then used one of the rituals from UA to turn into a Khaasta out of Fiend Folio(I think) which was important because it allowed me to buy off the LA of +3 also in UA and they are Monsterous Humanoids which I needed to get the Legendary Monster template from MM3(?) (This template does not add to level it adds to challenge rating only. I got by with it, but I really shouldn't have)

A massive sword from Kensai and a second that I got using the Ancestral Relic feat. + I maxed out the 2 wep fighting and weapon specialization/mele weapon mastery feat trees. And maxed out my hide and UND (of course)

I had immunity to mind effecting, fire, electricity, and something else.
I killed an acient worm red dragon in 1 round. Sneek attack on something like 12 attacks per round + Str + enchatments. The Death match came down to a tie because there was 1 flaw in my plan. I couldn't fly. Oh well, next time.

I have never played Tomb of Horrors but I would take the Pepsi challenge with this character.

2007-12-15, 05:15 PM
OK Time for a full battle report.

There were four players in our group, one of which decided to make his own characters so three were playing the characters that were built here.

It began With all the characters being summoned before the tomb a dark voice spoke and informed them that beause of dm fiat due to an acient blood oath, they were all tasked with killing Acererak the Lich.

The group chose their first four characters, Tanky Mctanskalot, A dread necromancer, Shadoweb the rogue, and Mortimer the rogue.

I allowed the pcs to take ten to search for floor traps They found the three entrances, and then came the first Death.

Tanky Mc tanksalot (r.i.p.) and Mortimer entered fake entrance number 2, and Grazvel missed the trap trigger, and then made his save, Tanky did not. He was trapped in the crushing room. They managed to almost pry the door open before he was crushed, on the last turn before his death, the dread necro, threw a potion of gaseous form threw the crack in the door, but failed to get it all the way through. Tanky was made into paste with the potion a mere inches away from his outstretched hand.

The Tanky was replaced with Grazvel the duskblade.

So Grazvel, necro, Mortimer, and shadoweb entered the dungeon.

The group found the riddle/poem in the mosaic, this riddle, proved to be incredibly helpful to them, they interpreted it almost flawlessly thorughout the dungeon.

The Pc's avoided The cool traps, in the first room specifically the demon head of doom. After searching and detrapping the entire room, Mortimer and Necro, went throught the misty arch and ended up in the dungeon lever room. They tried the levers and stumbled on the correct release almost right away. After finding thier way back tothe main entrance, the group moved on to the Gargoyle room.

Grazvel the duskblade met his untimely demise in this arena. He moved to engage the GArgoyle and was torn to pieces as the Mutant four armed gargoyl hit with all six of its attacks (plus rend). This turned Grazvel into a fine red mist. The group defeatd the Gargoyle and our story fasts forward some...

Enter the Chapel. The characters search the whole are, and Mortimer triggers boitht the lightning bolt and the fireball on the throne, making his saves, he remians untouched, that is until the chitine uncorks the urn containing the blood motes. All the Pc's roll extremly bad on init, and the blood mote clouds converge on poor mortimer who forgot to heal up after the gargoyle, between the condamage and hp from the two blood clouds, he falls and becomes one with a mote cloud. The necro then rebukes the clouds and pushed them back into the urn.

SoD, Unfortunately no-one went anywhere near the misty door. so no genderbending tricks.

They found the ring door, and travelled down to the fake lich. Grazvel was replaced by dietrich Cleric of Hextor.

So they once again ruined my fun and avoided the trapped, fall into lava, hallway.

The met the False acererak in battle.

DM PWNAGE!!!!

The Chitine grabbed the mace of lich destruction. and failed to hit, the lich then began casting. The rest of the party by virtue of being casters who lost initiative and weren't prepared when they engaged, were kept mostly out of it due to AOE blasty spells from the lich.

The Chitine Fumbled and the lich got an AoO and swiped him with his paralyizing touch, It was tehn the liches regular turn and he Cone of cold destroyed the Druid R.I.P, the druids bear and severly injured the necro and Dietrich. Who BOTH failed saves. they spent the round trying to heal up but were subsequently wasted by the lich (Ice storm kept the casters flailing, then lightning bolt finished them off. TPK!!!!

OK It's dinner time so I will finish out the report later.

I don't have any of my notes in front of me, so this is pretty muchg from memory, if one of my players wants to throw in some details or correct any mistakes, speak up...

Coming soon: Part Two, the rest of the party.
