Welcome to...
Iron Avatarist

This Iron Avatarist contest will be judged by

(Ego Slayer/Vorpal Tribble/Hawkeye/Dark Corax/and maybe me)
(Final lineup subject to change - If any of you want to draw instead just let me know!)

Our theme this month is...
OotS On Broadway!

Showtunes anyone? Serious drama? In what may be the oddest IA theme yet, the theme of this contest is to draw the OOTS characters in theater related guises! Haley in Cats? Roy as Nathan Detroit? And don't forget those backstage crew (goblin teen gaffers? Thog work trapdoor?) Who knows what's going to happen, but the show must go on! (And any theatre production is fair game, but save film for another day.)

Remember: All artwork must be your own. Do not take, alter, or use any of the The Giant's art. Thanks.

As usual there will be a First through Third place award for each of the following, with trophies by Oblivion:

Best OotS Character in Character
Best OotS Character Off-Stage
Best Erf Character
Best Group (>1 Character = Group)

And, as always, the Best Overall award.

As usual, I'll be giving the jazz-handed Roland’s Choice Award to the avatarist's creation that most appeals to my, admittedly Fantasticks, sensibilities.

Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you are trying to enter in.

Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what your entry is.

(Nicked from the first conforming entry by Lyinginbedmon. Thanks!)

Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.
However, you may submit old creations as long as they have never been entered into an Iron Avatar Thread before. It does not have to be something made specifically for this thread.

All entries must be completed by January 6, 2008 at Noon Eastern Standard Time.

Awesome!
*ponders*

If you don't mind my asking, what's with all the oots-specific IAs lately? I would've thought this could just as easily be Broadway/theatre in general...
(I mostly ask cuz I'm not so good at getting the oots characters just right, so these ones tend to put me at a bit of a disadvantage )

I've never entered in one of these before, but I've been wanting to play around with stick figure art for a while so I'm eager to give it a go. Pity I'm not too knowledgeable about Boradway though; I may have to stick to the classics!

Since I'm new to this I'm a bit unfamiliar with the rules: are full comic strips acceptable, or just character concepts?

Well, there was a "Group Shot" of goblins working backstage... I'm certanly not going to go around changing the rules, but I'd like to say I always enjoy your work...

Try drawing whatever you want (you seem to have something in mind), then add or change a few details after the fact... Draw a Catgirl from "Cats," then change her hair to red-orange for Haley, or purple for V.

I can't even draw stick-figures. But I CAN admire other people's skills!

What I had in mind was actually all the classic musicals. So if you're familiar with any of those, you're in business. I'd think most people are more familiar with those than with what's currently on broadway.

As the name of the contest suggests, what we're really looking for is avatars. Avatar-sized pics play best. Or, if you think it needs to be slightly larger, okay. After that, the next most common (appropriate) are single scenes (especially useful when doing groups). Actual comics aren't really appropriate, though we see some from time to time. (I don't recall one ever winning anything, though.)

Sweet. Are we aiming for just musicals, or would classic stage based theatre okay (i.e. Shakespeare and so on)? Is opera okay?

I'm mainly interested in a full comic strip as I'm aiming to start a webcomic of my own sometime early next year and I need the practice; using characters I'm already familiar with seems like a good exercise .

Anyway, I'd better get brainstorming. I'm eager to see what people come up with!

Any live theatre production is fair game.

One (hopefully) final note on category and such, I don't disqualify things. My standard practice is to let folks submit whatever they like and let the judges decide what does or doesn't meet their expectations (and fancies).

Just for the record... I'm not really sure what musicals you have over there. I might do some musicals that we have here in France (and in French).
I'll always specify the name, though, and most of them are adapted from classics (Shakespeare, Hugo, St-Exupéry...) so it should be okay.

I had to read that book a couple years ago. My teacher said it was a lot deeper than it looks, I never got what was so special about it though. *Shakes fist angrily*

Well, it's an allegory about friendship, love, and how people should stay kids because adults are absurd.
You should also keep in mind that it was written during WWII and the author was in the US, far from home, and that he wrote that books for a friend of his who was still living in occupied France.
If you didn't like it, they're probably nothing more to it that you can "get". I mean, you either like the book or you don't, it can't really be forced.
I personnally loved it, and I get new things from it each time I read it, so I'd say that yes, it's deeper than it looks at first glance.

And it seemed fitting with the OotS character :) Elan is childish like the Little Prince, Vaarsuvius is wise like the Fox, Roy has that protective side, like th Pilot, Haley hides her love because she's afraid, like the Rose (although she's not hiding it under vanity), Durkon is lawful like the Lamp-Lighter and, well, the Snake, as the only killer in the story, seemed fitting for Belkar :p

Nale would also be good for the self-absorbed adult, but I don't think I'd be able to fit the whole linear guild, be it only because there is only one female character in that story (if you excluide all the other roses, that are only there to show the Little Prince that although there are thousands of roses that look just like his, his is still unique)

Anyway, it seemed fitting. Sorry it reminded you of bad memories :p

Thanks - I sometimes get into a strange mood when working on cartoons and tend to throw my all into it.

Incidentally, I'm working completely in the open source vector art Inkscape which works a treat for avatars, and I'm happy to give any tips for other avatarists who want to learn Inkscape. I also see on this forum there's an avatar adoption thread; since everything is vector based it's a cinch to extract out any one character and repose them if anyone's interested. I've got plans to adopt Major General Thog as my avatar after this theme is over.

Edit: Just was thinking: Would anyone here like a beginner's tutorial on making OotS avatars with Inkscape? It's almost the weekend and I've been meaning to write another Inkscape tutorial for ages. If there's interest, I could base it on - say, Miko as a character in the Mikado (I'm open to other ideas) - and stick it up on the Internet in a few days. Anyone keen?

I've seen a few small adhoc tutorials as part of the Inkscape threads here but nothing too involved. I wrote a tutorial for making game sprites last year for another site called Inkscape Advetures (http://members.gamedev.net/trapperzoid/ia/index.html), but I never got further than making the first "create a green slime" exercise. It struck me while making that last cartoon that making an Order of the Stick avatar is the perfect fun way to learn how to use Inkscape, so I think I'll rejig the thing on the weekend and post a link here and in my signature.

I agree Javert fits Miko very well, although I like Javert a lot more than I like Miko.
Plus, Javert can realise he's wrong when presented with proof...
And the criminal he's chasing is an actual criminal, not an imaginary one.

But, yes, good call on that one, it's a good cast :smallwink:

Let's see...Sara, Hilgya, and Elan's mom have all had genuine male troubles to my knowledge. Kazumi is presently happily married, Lien is (As far as I know) single, and I couldn't say for Lirian, though as a Druid I'd be surprised if she'd killed someone in a manner befitting that performance.

I would be.
Sounds like fun.

If for no other reason than I could get the MiTD doing Singing in the Rain.
