Again, according to SoD, very unlikely, because...

...almost nobody in the world knows about the Snarl. But the MitD is clearly some form of recognizable monster, according to the hunters who caught him. They they commented how amazing it is that they could find one of whatever the MitD is in the jungle, and how surprising it was that the thing can talk. Which implies that it's some form of creature that is known to man.

Or it just has a really low spot check... it also can't tell Xykon from a skeleton with a robe on, even when being explicitly told the difference.

While the gate thing COULD be specific to what it is... it could also be indicative of really lousy perception.
