the shield spell blocks magic missile because it is all force, but will it also block orb of force?

Yes, that.

A spell which was "you are immune to Force damage" would be higher level.

Yes, that.

A spell which was "you are immune to Force damage" would be higher level.

In particular, it's 4th level (Forceward).

Shield has a special case that says it blocks Magic Missile, which applies to Magic Missile only.

What the people above said, yeah.

Additional support for that ruling if you need it: Magic Missile wasn't the only offensive force effect when the PHB came out: Mordenkainen's/Mage's Sword (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/magesSword.htm) is another, as is Spiritual Weapon (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/spiritualWeapon.htm) and the various Bigby's X-ing Hand spells. Shield doesn't mention any of these, suggesting that it blocks Magic Missile specifically instead of Force effects in general.

Shield does block Orb of Force, Mordenkainen's Sword, and Spiritual Weapon. It blocks them in the same way that a mundane shield does: By increasing your armor class. Magic Missile only gets a special callout because it doesn't even need an attack roll at all.

Well, not Orb, 'cause that's a touch attack.

Incidental musing: because Shield identifies Magic Missile by specific name you could develop a spell that is identical to Magic Missile in every respect aside from not being called exactly 'Magic Missile' and bypass Shield with it.

Yes, It can negate Magic Missile attacks:
Shield creates an invisible, tower shield-sized mobile disk of force that hovers in front of you. It negates magic missile attacks directed at you. The disk also provides a +4 shield bonus to AC. This bonus applies against incorporeal touch attacks since it is a force effect. The shield has no armor check penalty or arcane spell failure chance. Unlike with a normal tower shield, you can’t use the shield spell for cover.

I would call it Tyckspoon's Flying Books, because that's what would get thrown at you at some tables for trying it :P
