So my group is doing a pirate-themed campaign, and as a joke, the idea of using the Awaken (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/a/awaken/) spell to make our ship sapient like a human.

Just for fun, is there any RAW method that this could theoretically be done? Lets pretend "getting a new ship" is on the table.

So far the ideas of "find a way to turn wood into flesh, and then awaken it" and "Convince an Ent to take the shape of a Boat" have been floated around.

What other ways could we potentially turn our current or make a new ship animal or tree-like enough to potentially allow the Awaken spell to give it intelligence? Bonus points if it's also animate able to move and shift itself independently, maybe even having limbs of some kind.

Animate Object, Permanency, Awaken Construct. Requires CL 32 for the Animate Object casting.

Enchant the entire ship as an intelligent magic item?

oh yeah, think that one was thrown around too.

How would you even get a CL of 32 though? isn't the max level 20?

You can simply create a permanent animated object though craft construct (https://aonprd.com/Rules.aspx?Name=Animated%20Objects&Category=Building%20and%20Modifying%20Constructs), and then cast Awaken Construct, no CL requirement (aside CL 5th for the feat).

For the fun, you can use a rod of empower or maximise spell to have higher stats.

There are options to juice your CL, and it gets easier if you're just trying to do it for a single spell cast since you can use consumables for it.

Came up with this idea in our session today, DM said it might actually work.

Step 1. Aquire a large rock.

Step 2. Use "Stone shape" to turn the rock into a big negative mold of a ship. So everywhere empty space would be is stone, and everywhere ship would be is air.

Step 3. Use "Plant growth" inside of the mold to fill it with plants.

Step 3. Remove the stone,

Step 4. Cut the different plants in key locations to graft them all together into one organism.

Step 5. Awaken.

The Minor Servitor spell will do what you need.
