What's not to love in a wiki that clearly defines everything I hate about some settings? (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BlackAndGrayMorality)

Feel free to post links to other entries on the website that you like a lot, too. I probably will myself.

Everytime I enter that site, I get stuck for hours (in a good way, that is). That site I like.

And so many terms from there are entering into the popular vocabulary.

I've even found myself using a few of them.

This website- various people posting links- sucked me in. Now, I do find myself using some of the terms in everyday use. It's crazy.

Yay, they launched it! And included Song of Ice and Fire, which was inexplicably disputed on the YKTTW. I thought it was DOA.

But TV Tropes has been well and truly flogged all over the forum. Anyone who hasn't checked it out before you posted this thread just has a major aversion to links.

Chekov's Gun is older than you think (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OlderThanTheyThink). Because, you know, it was named after the 19th century playwright Anton Chekhov.

I'm a fan of the Wild Mass Guessing section. For instance:
The Snarl is the primordial form of Haruhi Suzumiya

Anyway, that site is possibly the most entertaining educational resource since Snopes. A must read for anyone who wants to overanalyze their television shows, or just understand where some of the overused television traditions come from.

I clicked on one of the links above, say, about two hours ago. I have only just managed to read through all of the "This one sounds interesting!" articles I ended up opening.

Damn TV Tropes! It amplified my taste for overanalysing the overanalysis! It's like I'm trying to metagame the metagame of the metagame of everyday life. Or something.

TV Tropes is THE DESTROYER OF SOULS. It is the tool of the Dark Powers sent to corrupt humanity before the End of Days. Fire is going to start raining down from the skies one afternoon and everybody's sorry butt is going to be reading up on which Mythbuster's episodes are applicable to larger pop culture.

TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Life indeed.

The point the Black and Grey article seems to be making is that this is the trope of doing it "too much"; too cynical an outlook results in a world without a single decent, sympathetic character that isn't quickly killed.

I prefer things slightly more hopeful, but not outright Idealistic (all the time anyway).

Well, in truth Black And Grey, like any trope, can be done with finesse and elan. The article points out how it can be overdone, but so do all of the articles. It's part of the fun, learning about how even the hokiest tropes can sometimes be handled with great skill.

Of course, sometimes they're not (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DominicDeegan), but that can be its own kind of fun (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SoBadItsHorrible)

TV Tropes is simply hilarious. I hadn't found the Fanon one yet. I clicked on three random series and all of them contained the following conspiracy theory: [protagonist] is a Time Lord.
Lovely.

My favorite entry of the entire site is without any doubt: Xanatos Roulette (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/XanatosRoulette?from=Main.TheXanatosRoulette).
I actually had that as my homepage for several weeks.

There are a lot of themes in Wild Mass Guessing:

X is Jesus. In purgatory.
Y is a Time Lord.
Omnipotent Being Z is Haruhi Suzumiya (I will admit to helping propagate this one, see the OotS entry.)
Series A is secretly a spinoff of Series B (usually Evangelion, even when the show has nothing to do with anime or Humongous Mecha).
Most of these have entries in the Grand Unifying Guesses page.

Honestly, just how many tropers do we have here? I've seen everyone cite links, and seen a lot of usernames over on YKTTW that I also see here. It's also funny to look at the "inbound links" page, as by far the most entries from one site are from here.

We are legion

It is certainly the case that many of the Elder Posters are fans of TV Tropes, and from today's OotS we see that The Giant is also a fan. Considering the fact that many (if not all) of us here play Pen and Paper RPGs, it's unsurprising that TV Tropes has such a draw. If you've ever written an adventure, thumbing through TV Tropes helps put words to all of the set pieces you've used in the past. If you've ever played an adventure, you get a very keen sense of the meta-narrative, since anticipating plot twists and such can help keep your character alive

Rogue 7

I'd question whether or not the Giant actively peruses the site- it'd be cool, certainly, but he could have picked up on it based on the sheer amount of noise we make about it here on the forums, and whatever troping language we bring into the OOTS board discussions.

And I suppose that our Roleplaying experience accounts for it, but I don't actually have all that much, and I love the site- maybe it's because I just enjoy dissection of my favorite shows and video games, but the site's sucked me in. I'd say curse you for getting me addicted to something else if I minded, but I really don't.

"Hanging a lampshade/lantern" is a writing industry term; the idea is nowhere near original to TVTropes. I know that's how most of us (who aren't Stargate SG-1 fanatics) are aware of the term, but I find it more likely that the Giant heard it somewhere else, as opposed to wasting all his free time on a wiki.

Oh, I'm aware that TV Tropes isn't "original." However, considering both its popularity on the Boards and in meatspace, I'd be surprised if The Giant hadn't at least glanced at TV Tropes at least once.

And as anyone who has visited TV Tropes can tell you, "in for a glance, in for an hour"

Always did love that site ever since I stumbled upon it while searching Google for Start of Darkness (Rich's book), instead ending up with the trope (tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/main/StartOfDarkness) itself.

I like the articles about Raping the Dog, Xanatos Gambit/Roulette and the Crapsack World.
