Specifically moon druid, since that's the only subclass released so far.

Background feat, magic initiate. blade ward, cantrip of choice, and Shield

level 3, you can cast healing word, pass without trace, and of course shield while in animal form. Plus you have a bonus action attack that's great for crowd control, especially since you're a natural grappler with large size

level 4, war caster. Boost wisdom to 18 (meaning str and dex are 18's too, when you shift). Now you can concentrate on things like heat metal, spiked growth, or bark skin and be less worried about dropping concen.

level 5, you're up to 3 attacks. Oh, and casting dispel magic while shifted

level 6 you get elemental damage, along with a floating damage resistance

Is it a drop in the pure damage of the wild shapes from 5e? Well yes. And you don't have the ridiculous temp hp shield. But you get AC, utility, *the ability to speak*, and a much smoother power progression

I'm quite happy with this. Being able to cast off a limited list while shaped is a great move, IMO.
