so I'm curious cuz I can't seem to find rules for it. how much money should a shop owner have on hand for purchasing items? Some DMs let players sell anything from a piece of chalk all the way up to a +5 magical weapon at any town or city in the world they are in, that doesn't seem like a good solution. a gem shop owner might have several thousand on hand so they can purchase some of the more expensive pieces however a black smith or a tailor might only have 5-10 gold pieces in their whole store. obviously a jeweler would have more security where the tailor might have a pet dog that may or may not sound the alarm if you sneak in. my question, is there a list or a document somewhere that lists how much money shops keep on hand for buying items from players so that the players have to wait for bigger cities to get a decent price on magical equipment?
here is kinda what i was thinking and you can decrease it for smaller places like villages of 30 people obviously wouldn't have 500gp or more on hand
Small Civilization:
General Store: 500-1,000 gold pieces (GP)
Blacksmith: 300-600 GP
Alchemist Shop: 400-800 GP
Magic Emporium: 800-1,500 GP
Bookstore: 200-400 GP
Herbalist Shop: 200-400 GP
Tavern/Inn: 100-300 GP
Tailor Shop: 200-400 GP
Medium Civilization:
General Store: 1,000-2,000 GP
Blacksmith: 600-1,200 GP
Alchemist Shop: 800-1,500 GP
Magic Emporium: 1,500-3,000 GP
Bookstore: 400-800 GP
Herbalist Shop: 400-800 GP
Tavern/Inn: 300-600 GP
Tailor Shop: 400-800 GP
