so i had an idea for a campaign setting but cant implement it properly with my DM style or at least implement it successfully but i figured it would be a fun idea for other DMs to try out and possibly get some fun and interesting roleplay out of it.
For this idea, you will need a willing player/ex DM who is willing to play a character that doesn't technically exist. he can be named whatever and should be named something the players would assume another player would call their player. however, hes a bard, and a pacifist. so he can buff the party and he can buff them anywhere they are and can seemingly be anywhere that the players are. kinda weird right? however he is hesitant to engage with the world and always makes up excuses as to why he can't do things.
the reason why this "Player" is so interesting is because he is in fact a hallucinogenic mold/parasite that has taken root in their brains, so its not that he wont interact with the world, its that he CANT interact with the world. he is considered a disease but he is an intelligent disease that can make a saving throw against spells like "Cure Disease" or potions that do the same. he can create hallucinations so it looks like he is fighting with the players with a high enough bluff check, he can even heal them with the bardic healing spells from any range. hes super useful, However, the players only gain half the hitpoints they would normally roll per level, this is to show that the players are actually feeding this mold/parasite their life force. however if the mold/parasite character were to ever fail the save for the "Cure Disease" spell or potion the players hitpoint maximum is returned to normal meaning the players suddenly feel like they lost half their hitpoints but in fact their hit points were just returned to normal.
the player could join in at any point, basically just coming wandering in from whenever and the players hit points get modified from the point that the mold/parasite takes over, its not retroactive.
i think this would give the players some interesting roleplay options as well as a quest to remove the mold/parasite that has been sucking their life force away. it would also be a good way to make normal encounters seem life threatening as the players would have half the number of hitpoints they normally would, especially mages.
for roleplay groups i think this would be fun and entertaining and mischievous however i do not think i could pull it off.
