This is the 24th edition of the Order of the Stick Trivia thread.
How does the Order of the Stick Trivia thread have a 24th edition?

Here are the rules for any newcomers:

Quiz originally started by Hilbert,
Rules originally drafted by Forbiddenwar, and extended by various contributors.

The first player to answer a question correctly, asks the next one.
If that player doesn't have a question immediately in mind, then state "Open Question" ("OQ") and let someone else ask.
Questions have to have an answer that is demonstrated by at least one, and no more than three, canon online strips. (No bonus material, either online or in the books.)
No counting questions with more than 3 parts. For example, "How many times has Roy said 'the'?" violates this rule.
If the answer given is not the answer expected, but still technically answers the question, allow it. You can rephrase and ask your question again later.
There's a difference between rephrasing—finding a different, more precise way to word the question so it has a smaller number of possible answers—and just simply rewriting to rule out the last answer. Don't do the latter. (If you are unsure, just ask.)
If an answer is given that in no way is correct, then players can call attention to the fact. At that point, there may be 2 questions occurring at the same time. The 1st question that was incorrectly answered is the valid question. The second question may be answered, but for no prize (aka asking the next question).
If your response is ninja'd, that is if someone beats you with the correct answer, please edit your post stating, "ninja'd, please answer above question".
After 24 hours without an answer, please provide a hint. After an additional 24 hours pass, please provide the answer and take pride that you have stumped us all. If you won't be around to provide a hint (hiking Mt. Everest or doing some other activity without internet), rot-13 is a good way to hide your hint so you can post it in advance.
Recognize that this is a game. It is supposed to be quick and fun. If a question seems to go beyond the rules, assume that the author is not familiar with the rules, and point them out. If the author affirms that the question is allowable within the rules, then continue with the game. If the question turns out to be not allowable, it becomes an open question. Groan and move on.
Questions along the lines of "when was the first time X happened/was mentioned" are not allowed because to prove that they never happened before, one would have to link to every strip before it, which is unreasonable and would break the no-more-than-three-strips rule. They are permitted if the answer is in the first three strips, however.

If half-elves have one pointy ear, do half-orcs have only one tusk/fang? Either way, find me that person. Therkla is a half-orc who has tusks only on the bottom. This is tricky because when an orc's mouth is closed you can only see the bottom tusks anyway, so you have to look at panels with the mouth open. Some orcs in #522 appear to have only one tusk, the bottom one closer to the camera, but it's always hard to be sure if they really don't have the other lower tusk or if it's just not visible to the camera (https://i.giantitp.com//comics/oots/oots0552.gif). Perhaps you could tell from the printed books, but we can't use those as evidence in the trivia threads per their rules. In any case, they're not half-orcs so they're not the answer. The orc bodyguard with orange boot also seems to have only one lower tusk in #998 1st, (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0998.html) but that too is probably just in this view. Although she appears a few more times, this is the only time we see her mouth: funnily in #999 29th she appears with a round mouth that obscures her tusks completely (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0999.html). If she were the answer then OQ. I know most of this because (https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?635980&p=25347485#post25347485) I asked something similar in the trivia thread (https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?647769&p=25654609#post25654609).

Well, as a domesticated species spread by humans all around, housecats are not particularly indigenous anywhere as far as I'm concerned, but so far as they are safely segregated from cute little things they can surplus murderize, I could settle for an uneasy truce with them, I suppose.

A cursory search tells me that their earliest ancestors were introduced to Norway by humans in the previous millenium, and they are specifically Norwegian only insofar as they then interbred with other breeds of cats, likewise introduced to Norway by humans, but generally at an even later point. Meh.

Meanwhile, actually native felines like the European wildcat are steadily competed and assimilated into oblivion by [drumroll] housecats.

:belkar: Find a strip where someone doesn't know my name and another one where that same someone does.

Is this (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0269.html) enough evidence for not knowing his name? Because if so, there are plenty of data showing that she later does (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0613.html).

I think you sometimes cross the line of thinking people playing this trivia also play real D&D (other reason I think that (https://forums.giantitp.com/showsinglepost.php?p=25769257&postcount=1261)). Nowhere in any strip is the cost of that scroll specified.

Hmm. Interesting. I guess I've always thought of D&D 3.5 being part of the story, when and if it is explicitly mentioned and shown to be relevant. WBL and standardized prices are explicitly mentioned (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1054.html), so to me, they're part of the story.

Like, I get that assuming knowledge of 3.5 to ask a question is wrong. Clearly, I shouldn't ask you to show me a beast-heart adept (oona). Do we go even further than that? If I ask you to show me Durkon casting a spell with variable effects depending on character level (holy word), would that not be a legitimate question? Even though we clearly see the effect, and it is communicated as such, the lack of explicit mention in the text of HD makes it wrong to ask? Perhaps. I think that was the logic my track question relied on, and maybe that's out of bounds too.

But to me, there's still a difference between "not asking about the 3.5 layer of the story" and "ignoring the 3.5 layer of the story". Pricing of magic items is just part of that layer. Like, I don't know, reach. We know (from the text) the half ogre with the spiked chain from strip 216 has a reach of 15 ft. If someone was to ask "show me a strip with a weapon we know the reach of, and a weapon we don't", 216 wouldn't be a valid answer, even though the text doesn't explicitly tell us roy's sword has a normal medium melee 5 ft reach. Because it would be asking a question about the 3.5 layer of the story, while ignoring its context. It's like the difference between not assuming knowledge of Monty Python for the weapon shop skit (right) and assuming its irrelevance while asking about that layer of the story (wrong?)

Well, she talked about him over and over without throwing his name in, so I think we can assume that she didn't know his name, yes. Your question.

I would not be able to infer that from the strip (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0860.html). I always assumed it meant that it does bad things to Evil creatures depending on type (which is why only Sabine got banished) but Tarquin made his save. Unless there's another strip you have in mind.

I think it would be an okay question, other than perhaps the implication that we'd need to link all other strips to prove we don't know a greatclub's reach. Which, to be fair, counts against my question too, but I tried to make it clear it was only for the purposes of that strip. Find me a strip in which we learn the reach of one weapon but that of another involved is not mentioned. Would work. Not the current question!

If we play the trivia hardcore RAW we'll end up in situations where someone asks to link three strips where Roy does X and then when the answer is given and accepted, someone else points out that in none of those strips was this mysterious bald dark-skinned fighter actually called Roy and so we cannot say unambiguously that this is correct and we'd need a fourth strip that names him. Or that to show that B happened after A chronologically, we need to link every strip after A (and after B) to prove there was no time travel plot twist. The game wouldn't be fun for anyone without flexible rules and assumptions about strip/real-world knowledge, including D&D rules. I just think you went a little far in these two cases. I still don't know what ACF means, even though I've put plenty of hours into D&D CRPGs (though mostly 2E).

Interesting! I would've thought that "strong enough to resist it, which I am" is clearly not talking about a save he could've failed just as well - but if you missed that, than that's probably just my familiarity with the spell influencing the way I read the strip. This (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/holyWord.htm) is how holy word works, if you're interested.

Rereading your question - you're right. You said "unspecified", not "unknown" as I had read and misremembered. Unspecified is indeed correct. Would you agree that "unknown" or the like would be pushing it too far? Wrong again! You said "undefined", which I'd argue is still a bit problematic, and perhaps what led to my confusion. But I understand that I'm being pedantic now, about a language that isn't my native one, so I'll quiet down.

(very reasonable commentary, followed by): I just think you went a little far in these two cases. I still don't know what ACF means, even though I've put plenty of hours into D&D CRPGs (though mostly 2E).

Probably. I think we're not at any fundamental disagreement here. ACF, by the way, is short for "alternate class feature" - many classes in 3.5 are customizable to a large degree, with many splat books introducing options to replace this or that feature of a per-existing class (like a ranger's 1st level bonus track feat) with something else.

for anyone who missed it: we have an OQ

Wind Walk refers to Gaseous Form when specifying the benefits the brand of disembodiment it provides, which are mechanically distinct from incorporeality. Ghostform, on the other hand, explicitly confers the Incorporeal subtype on the recipient, so the Xykon example dountlessly works.

Gonna have to guess the answer is yes, because if it's no we'd have to break the 3 strip rule to prove it.

Okay, I'm taking a stab at this because why not. Haley told one of the guards that anything written in the manual that contradicts what she's telling him is just another part of the test.

The manual says pictures of all members of the prison staff are posted in the lounge and guards should get to know them.

Haley says Elan is (future) prison staff... but before the potion of glibness is drunk. Still counts, I say so.

So the guard thinks "Get to know them!" is a part of the test, because it contradicts Haley's assertion that Elan is (future) prison staff, and not real advice, and therefore will stop trying to get to know the other guards. This could be interpreted as him being less trustworthy, especially if I have a time budget for looking for this one.

I'm saying that it wouldn't be hard to argue that in order to prove that none of them became less trustworthy, we'd have to link every subsequent strip and point out that in none of them has someone made an appearance saying, hi, I'm a guard that Haley bluffed and now I'm selling snake oil and bridges. The last one is mentioned to a master in front of his disappointing student.

Har har har, but nope. Roy's Archon flies/levitates, it lacks the capacity for climbing, so get rules lawyered right back!

I'm legitimately surprised this one ran out the timer. The answer is, just as it took Roy eight weeks to climb the mountain (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0499.html), it takes a piercer eight weeks to climb a big chamber's wall. And just a brief reminder of a couple rules that may or may not be relevant:

5. If the answer given is not the answer expected, but still technically answers the question, allow it. You can rephrase and ask your question again later.
6. There's a difference between rephrasing—finding a different, more precise way to word the question so it has a smaller number of possible answers—and just simply rewriting to rule out the last answer. Don't do the latter. (If you are unsure, just ask.)
