First attempt at game: Trusted & Denied [Pathfinder, 9th Level, Looking for Players]

Edit:
re-recruitment
https://forums.giantitp.com/showthre...mission-PF-3-5

This is a "rescue" game to give 4-6 player who have completed characters (and the OP of the inrest tread) to run the characters they created (or in the OP case, soon create by Saturday).

Expected posting frequency IC is 2-3 per week, though the GM will probably post more often.
GM is a teacher on summer break in Indonesia. The Time zone is the exact opposite of US EST.

Setting will be a bit more generic than the first attempt at this game.

Once 4 players commit, the IC tread will be opened. The introduction will be a "prison establishing shot" and mission briefing. Additional players may join up to the start of the actual mission. ("This is Katana. She is coming along.")

I'm a 3.5 era gm, so if I say "spot check" just "Roll with it" for your perception or whatever. If I ask for a weird-seeming role, I'm probably converting a 2e or 4e scenario on the fly. I'm basing the adventure on scenes from old modules, though your team (or individual) objectives may be different.

Characters were created using PF1. If you want to use 3.5 material when you level up (or make a replacement character after the death of you starting character) you may, within reason (subject to GM approval, terms and conditions may apply, boyhood prohibited). Arcana Unearthed/Evolved may also be used with approval.

Players wishing to commit, please link your sheet and give a short description of your character.
I'd like to launch by Saturday.

Mentha Peprit (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2791326) is an orphan turned alchemist turned necromancer after finding herself plagued with strange visions from a heretofore unheard of entity that referred to itself as the Sea of Bones.

Twopenny Tess (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2794602)—the leading scrounge of the wandering airship fleet, with a network of orphan filchers who fed her information, and who was sold into captivity when she tried to use that information to do something right.

It was said, long after Moonfall, that the only ones who survived the cataclysm were those who were already in the air.

Of the countless airships, cloudskimmers and highgalleons that had been aloft that day, many perished in the death throes of Alteria and the aftermath of Moonfall, or tried to descend in vain hopes of finding safe harbor below. As the remaining aeronauts struggled to understand what had happened, and to learn the ways of this new afterworld, some threw themselves overboard, or hanged themselves in their own rigging out of utter despair.

But many others survived; and in the confusion and chaos that followed, scattered vessels banded together into pairs and groups, to better withstand the predators already roaming the winds above the deadly Mists far below. Those small groups became clumps, then strings of vessels, and finally many dozens of surviving ships came together into a ragtag fleet, believing themselves to be the last survivors of the old world, following the promise of a new home somewhere over the horizon.

But the strange new skyborne lands were swiftly occupied, fortified, fiercely defended against reavers and scavengers alike; and by the time the fleet came upon them, there was no welcome, no sanctuary, no home to be had for the caravan of refugees wandering aloft.

Yet the clouds held resources that the sky-sailors of the previous age had scarcely touched; and as desperate years became decades, the hardscrabble survivors in the wandering fleet learned to subsist on whatever they could—and to harvest and prey upon high-altitude ecosystems that not even sages of the lost world had ever imagined. The fleet roamed endlessly upon the immense sky-rivers flowing above the shrouded and ruined world—sifting and filtering, netting and spearing, using what magic and ingenuity they possessed; and in time the fleet became a windfaring nation of its own.

But even as they survived and wandered and almost prospered, the fleet developed its own parasites and scavengers, its own netherworld of the marginal and unwanted. Life in the fleet had no guarantees; folk worked bitterly hard, day upon day, and sometimes died without warning—a moment’s inattention, an instant’s mistake enough to send them wailing into oblivion far below; and sometimes they were helped along, petty rivalries waiting for the slightest opportunity.

Infants and children were often left behind, orphaned or abandoned to survive as they might. They were the rats and mice of the fleet—sometimes set to what tasks they could manage, sometimes allowed a few scraps and leavings; but more often they nicked and filched whatever they could, retreating to hidden dark spaces where larger folk could not follow, barely tolerated as long as they knew their lowermost station.

Alyssum was born on the edge of that netherworld, named for a forgotten flower and marked by her copper-hued eyes; they reminded older folk of the humblest of coins from the old world, and she grew up as Twopenny, survived with the others when parents were lost and none would take her. But she was less willing to scamper and hide, always ready to stand and spit defiance like a fierce little rat—and even to defend smaller mice, unheard of in the chill-shadowed confines of deep cubbies and half-decks.

Those copper eyes saw more than they should in the dark, and she had strange knacks which often unnerved those who witnessed them; but always she sheltered and defended the motherless, and in time she had a spider’s-web of mice devoted to her, who shared morsels of food and tidbits of knowledge, which she gingerly bartered when it might do them some good.

The more they listened, the more she learned; and in time Twopenny Tess she was called, leading scrounge of the fleet’s netherworld, a lean rakish figure with a wicked knife and a healing touch, able to source any small item or snippet of gossip. Some captains hated her, fearing what she knew; others dealt with her at a discreet remove. And in the midst of it all, somehow an infant of her own—happened; and was cared for by her mice when she was away.

Then a rash of wailings over the side, too many for mischance or even small hatreds; someone among the many thousands of folk in the fleet was pursuing an agenda, or a vendetta, orchestrating murder and thieving to an extent the fleet had not known in many a year. But Twopenny Tess saw an opportunity; she set her mice to listening, she slipped through deepest dark to follow every lead; and soon enough she knew a conspiracy was at work, and soon after that she had their names and ships from throughout the fleet.

And so she came to the leading captains with a bold proposal: she would trade the identities of the criminal leaders for a secure home for all her mice, decent berths and honest work in the fleet, forsaking the shadows and filching for proper lives in the clear light of the upper decks.

The captains laughed, clapped her in irons, and declared they had captured the notorious thief and murderess who had plagued the fleet for so long. There followed a fleetwide hunt for her mice, and those they captured were flung high into the air and allowed to fall into the Mists below.

Some of her mice escaped the purge—those with skills and knacks of their own—and by means of subtle messages they let her know that her daughter had survived; but that was all they could do. Slipping out of snares, hiding deep in cable-tiers and forgotten compartments was one thing; but they were only small creatures, and they had no way to free her—much less when the captains sold her to Gravesend, there to rot as an example to thieves, liars and malcontents throughout the fleet and beyond.

But Tess endured the daily hell of Gravesend with more grit than anyone had expected; years later she endures it still. And always there is one thought burning in her mind: she will survive any torment, any abuse while she waits for the right moment to seize her chance—and then she will open as many arteries as necessary to escape this place, find her daughter, and burn the fleet to drifting ash.

I'll happily bring Cannibal Jeffy (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2521109) for a spin!

An obese, psychotic, drug-fuelled, alchemically-enhanced fleshy mass of cannibal goblin mayhem. Way too agile and flexible for a creature of his enormous bulk to ever be, he bounces and weaves through attacks while splitting his foes apart with an enormous butchering axe of Oni craftsmanship.

All right. For previous game I've build two character (wizard and magus), but posted only one, cause there were obviously enough melee combatants, but few fullcasters. For now I've added another version of magus (legendary one). It's a sort of rebuild, that gets rid of spellstrike, instead focusing on other aspects. So:

Aen Ral (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2791985) - dark elf wizard, shadow magic specialist, that worships sort of a dark goddess.

Lewis Blackheart (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2810065) - tiefling legendary magus. Ex-pirate, specializing on close combat, warping in-and-out it, and utilizing some Storm veils from akasha. Still WiP, but mostly finished. Backstory comes soon.

Lewis Blackheart (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2791941) - and here's the usual magus. Stealth, striking and some debuffing. Simpler than the previous one, but still capable. And presumably better in direct damage.

Ok, Killa Crock/shark guy in da house.

Do you have a write-up on Zerk? I'm thinking it is something like meth, bath salts, or woad.

Xav: choose a version of Lewis, please. For storyline purposes drow/dark elf might not work well.

I'll have an IC thread up in a few hours.

I'm not closing recruiting. I just prefer to get games rolling before things stagnate.

So, Lewis Blackheart (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2810065) - this one.

So, Lewis Blackheart (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2810065) - this one.

So, if I'm reading this correctly, he is just "odd looking human" instead of "obvious fiendish ancestry guy with horns or hooves" right?

Can you tell me about the sword? Motives and personality for influence and roleplay purposes?

So, if I'm reading this correctly, he is just "odd looking human" instead of "obvious fiendish ancestry guy with horns or hooves" right?Yep, exactly. Partially grey hair is part of a heritage.

Can you tell me about the sword? Motives and personality for influence and roleplay purposes?"Netherblade" is a sentient heirloom artifact, that accumulates the experience of the gifted members of the family. After death (or, possibly, in some other circumstances that are yet to be revealed) it disappears, in order to appear later in the possession of next gifted one. It's also obviously connected with the fiendish family heritage. Lewis doesn't know the whole story, - something is told to him by the sword itself, something is known from fragmentary accounts, but in general, it boils down to the fact that their family is connected to a demonic lord, who once created an artifact (and shared blood with the family) to control and form a close bond with members of the mortal aristocracy... but the goals voiced may differ from the real ones - thus, the sword claims that the lord died long ago, and now the Blackheart family is relatively free in their decisions, and the sword views itself as kind of family guardian spirit.

I rarely use sentient items so I'm not up on the rules.

Does it get its own spot check, or
Give you a bonus?

Does it count as a familiar?
What happens if someone else holds or wields it?

Xav
2023-07-04, 05:07 AM
Black blade is described here: Bladebound (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/base-classes/magus/archetypes/paizo-magus-archetypes/bladebound/)

In general, it's aware of its surroundings, but to simplify things, I'd say, it's not necessary to roll twice, it's just expressed by bonus Alertness feat.

A black blade normally refuses to use any of its abilities when wielded by anyone other than its legendary magus, and acts as a masterwork weapon of its type.

It prohibits having a familiar by any means.

Note that Netherblade is not present and you are all currently unequipped.

Thank you for the chart and update.

If anyone has a moment, please has a "senses" column to note low light or dark vision or anything nonstandard such as "detect undead constant".

Some notes on how I prefer rolling and thread use:

Short questions about the situation should be asked in the IC thread in parentheses. (Is the wounded on on the left?)

Most rolls should be made in the IC thread. Include a note for the purpose/intent of the roll. If you aren't sure, go ahead and roll.

I'm traveling internationally today/tomorrow and may be offline the next day to rest.

I may be offline, making short posts on my phone, or typing out a novel in my laptop, depending on how things go. The KL airport didn't have good wifi or outlets that fit my laptop last time

jakarta
2023-07-06, 05:08 AM
I might make "international travel" a high level skill challenge/monster.

I arrived 5 hours early, just in case ..

So far, the charging stations at the KFC are all broken, and they were out of Original Recipe.

Now the airline check-in computer is broken. "Regret ..process slightly longer than normal..." They've been trying to process the same girl for half an hour .

Esprit15

That’s just nightmarish. Sorry you gotta go through that.

jakarta
2023-07-06, 07:35 AM
,Well, that part didn't take too long...

And not knowing that the rules for cabin carry on vs "personal item" he as changed was really my fault ...

Not taking the Windows laptop cords out if the suitcase before I taxied it to a friend to hold was also my error.... So now I'm lugging a laptop I can't use ...

The hour flight delay, at this point, should almost be expected...I haven't even boarded because my plane isn't here.

But these are the burdens of an international teacher in SEA.

At least there isn't a restrictive pandemic at the moment.

I'll update the IC when I get to KL, if I can get a wifi connection.

Hope your flight goes well. I've had similar experiences in other equatorial regions.

Even so, I envy you the trip. Hope you have a window seat and an uneventful flight. Wouldn't mind seeing a couple photos of the landscape if that's in any way feasible. If not, hope all goes well.

jakarta
2023-07-06, 12:40 PM
You forget the time difference. Not much to see from the air on a cloudy night.

As for the airport, one Macdonald's looks pretty much like another. Just in SEA there is No bacon or milkshakes.

At least I got the terminal with the MacD this time, and the covid restrictions are gone so more things are open. Last time it was an 8 hour layover and the only thing open was a day-old sandwich shop. I'm in KL now.

There was an hour delay leaving Yangon (Rangoon), but that just means I have a 7 hour lay over instead of 8.

Palanan
2023-07-06, 01:13 PM
Ah yes, those are fun. Nothing like going 36 hours without sleep. Gives you a new perspective on how the brain organizes memories.

And I was indeed forgetting the day/night difference. But I always enjoyed watching the southern constellations rotate position as I flew north.

jakarta
2023-07-06, 01:18 PM
This trip is a couple of 2 hour flights. There isn't a direct route between Jakarta and Rangoon due to politics.
I can usually sleep on longer flights.

I could get a capsule transit room, but I sleep so poorly in hotels that it isn't worth it. Now that I've had my MacD, I'll just sit in this cafe. (there aren't any MacD's in Rangoon due to politics.)

I'm going to see how well I can compose in Word, and then see if I need coffee or sleep before editing it into something worth posting IC.

My flight is boarding.

Now waiting for late pick up driver.

Which characters could use a Wand or Identify or a Wand of Healing? Or would those be useless to a group of negative energy and shadow casters?

Palanan
2023-07-06, 11:05 PM
Tess has the Cure line of spells, running on positive energy, so she can cure herself and others in a pinch. She might be able to use the wand of healing.

Esprit15
2023-07-06, 11:21 PM
Mentha can use a wand of healing on others (though I also already purchased a wand of Cure Light Wounds for exactly that reason). She just needs Negative Energy for herself.

jakarta
2023-07-06, 11:31 PM
There is going to be an "equipment dump" of "slightly used" equipment. Basically, the pregen characters' gear from the original tournament module, with what you don't think you need shoved in a Bag of Holding.

I'll transfer that from the PDF when I'm back on laptop.

On my phone, In the car, in a traffic jam, in a storm... At the moment.

Don't worry, I'm not always complaining about travel travails.

Esprit15
2023-07-06, 11:42 PM

jakarta
2023-07-06, 11:52 PM
You do, though I will look it over for anything... Im not at full processor speed... Gamebreakingly problematic...

What time zone is everyone in? I'm opposite of EST, without daylight savings.

I don't want to go too fast and skip over the Goblin player.

I'm EST. I don't mind if you want to pause and wait for Paddy

The thing of it is that a game can pulse an pause at the speed of GM boredom. I had a lot of "hurry up and wait" time at the airports.
I don't want to overwhelm anyone, or make anyone feel imposed upon to post quickly when the expected posting frequency is lower.

1: The next scene will be a "preparing for battle/secret missions" montage.

Do you guys want me to post secret missions in the open, or behind spoilers? This is like Peacemaker's "retrieve the data and ensure it stays secret" mission.

2: You all will be given your chosen equipment. You will also be offered a bag containing the gear from the original module, and a few extra items. All but one 1 item is human sized. The exception is dwarf sized.

Mentha, Tess, and Lewis will be offered their choices of the gear in that order. Jeffy will be last, and the alchemical items and non-healing potions will not be offered to him (they think he would just snort them). Remaining items will be stuffed back in the Bag of Holding and sent along with you.
Each player, please read the list and note the items you are taking.

In some cases I have "spiced up" the item descriptions. If the spell doesn't appear in PF, then it does what it says it does. (like making everyone within 10 ft invisible, and I'll refer to the 1e book for the duration)

Little bit of an overwhelming list. It also repeats itself several times which makes it a little hard to read how many of things like scrolls there should be. It would also be nice for the non-Pathfinder spells to be called out so that we aren’t googling every single one.

That said

Scrolls: Speak with Dead, Silence 15' r., Continual Light, Remove poison, Neutralize Poison (x2), Dispel Magic, Charm Monster, Stone to Flesh, Cure Light Wounds (x2), Bless, Hold Person, Continual Light, Prayer, Remove Curse, Cure Serious Wounds, Commune, Death Touch, Raise Dead, Ventriloquism, Charm Person, Scroll (cont. light, hold monster)

Wearable:
Robe of Blending

Potions:
Potion of Invisibility x1
Potion of Cure Moderate Wounds x2
Potion of Inflict Moderate Wounds x2

Weapons:

Armour:
Shield +2

Envelope with Dust of Disappearance (5 pinches),

Gear:
backpack, wine flask, 2 wks rations (chicken Cacciatore) , 14 gp Spanish, 3 oil flasks (motor), 1 stuffed pink unicorn

I hope that’s all reasonable, I focused on taking healing scrolls that she can actually use.

Digging out Adnd Phb:
Looks like Death Touch is supposed to be Finger of Death.
https://adnd2e.fandom.com/wiki/Finger_of_Death. If you don't want the "make an undead later" bit, you can just substitute the PF version: https://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/all-spells/f/finger-of-death/

I actually condensed the list a bit...

And converted the spells from the Pregens into scrolls and books, as the author of the module thought those spells would probably be needed I wanted you to have access to them.

My experience with running 3.x characters though 1e modules is that the 3.x characters will either curb stomp it due to power creep between editions, Jail break it due to having options the 1e author couldn't anticipate... or the group has a difficult time due to player inexperience in a tournament module designed to test player skill (and an expected group size of 10).

Definitely an overwhelming list.

Also, I wonder if we could pause for a moment and grok the setting a little better. I noticed a couple anachronisms in Waller’s dialogue (i.e. “photogenic”) and assumed those just slipped in…but I’m seeing things like Canadian gp, pretzel trail mix, Swiss army knife, etc., to say nothing of certain religious icons.

So, I’m very confused about what sort of world we’re in. Can you give us more on this?

I just got tired of seeing "xx gp" on the equipment lists and decided to emphasise that the coins are a mixed lot from countries and perhaps planes your characters aren't familiar with. Every-other week someone is putting "Gnomish mulit-tool" into a splat book, so I turned the third dagger on the list into a Swiss army knife. Basically, these are minor in-jokes. If you want to see the original list, it starts on page 31. (NO PEEKING OTHERWISE)

https://ia903005.us.archive.org/7/items/tsr09058g123againstthegiants/tsr09058%20-%20G1-2-3%20-%20Against%20the%20Giants.pdf

Dnd has always been an anachronistic mix of stuff. For example, "Iron rations" are Victorian "tinned food".
I'm imagining a generic "medieval fantasy" setting (Which are typically a mix of everything form neolithic to renaissance with stray Victorian items) with a touch of steam-punk to account for the airships. Just assume the setting conventions from 1978.

As for Waller, I'm imagining that the movie version has emigrated to another setting to hide from Batman or Darksied and found a similar job.

Palanan : If you want to make a breakfast request you can. We can insert it retro actively if needed.

Xav: They are just going to give you the women's order(s) and a few other things to entice you to eat.

All: It will take me a while to type out individual scenes. Jeffy gets a quick sub-scene first. I'll post it without spoilers hiding it for our mutual entertainment.

Edit: In case there is any confusion, Waller just fulfilled Jeffy's breakfast order by serving himself to himself for companionship/breakfast. Note, both of him are still unequipped, and the other 3 PCs don't know what is going on in Jeffy's (Jeffys') cell.

Zesprit15: Does Mentha usually not carry a weapon? It's fine if she doesn't, I just want to be sure I'm not missing something. Is she more direct spell damage or summoner?

Xav: Just so you know, most of this adventure will be in hilly or mountainous terrain. When do you think being underground starts to negate your terrain bonus? I mean, how deep do you have to go before it starts being subterranean instead of a basement or mine in the mountains? Is it an altitude thing? If you are in a city in the mountains, like Denver, do you still get the bonus? For everyone else, we are talking about his Highlander trait.

Paddy: I'm assuming that Jeffy is starting out "cured" by forced detox due to long incarceration, and has had enough time to recover from the con damage. However, he is still psychologically addicted and still craves zerk.

PalananZesprit15: What time of day do you usually pray for spells? or is that not a PF thing?

I'm composing secret mission briefings. Might be tomorrow or the next day before I'm finished. I have to deal with a visa extension issue tomorrow.

I'd say, anything that doesn't involve direct mountain slope, counts as no-bonus.

Btw, you ok with Storm Veils? Guess I'll use something strict and simple to avoid multiple saves every round.

They still do. I think in keeping with tradition for Evil divine casters, Mentha does so at roughly sunset.

And whoops, that was just me totally spacing it. I took the light crossbow and some ammo, but I’ll also add the +2 mace if that’s alright. I don’t *expect* her to use either very often but you never know.

Btw, you ok with Storm Veils? Guess I'll use something strict and simple to avoid multiple saves every round.

I would say that

A) if you are using a portable weather event (from your 3rd or 4th subsystem), that something has gone terribly, terribly wrong with your mission.

B) it is the nature of missions for "Task Force X/The Suicide Squad" to go terribly, terribly wrong.

C) when things go Terribly, Terribly wrong on this series/adventure path, as the early modules are all called "fortress of a particular type of giant commander" and the middle section modules are called "underground city of underground monsters", when things do go terribly, terribly wrong you might be in a confined space with enemy combatants numbering in the 3 to 4 digits... you might need every subsystem you've got.

D) "copy paste" and forum die roller formula work well together...how are your spread sheet skills? Cause if you have an AOE causing multiple saves and conditions I may invoke the "player rolls" rule and say something like "Roll saves for Hill Giants 1-45 and ogres 6-14 and update the Google Sheet"

--
When I ran this in person multiple overlapping effects in bottlenecks was party SOP.

The other casters are shadow/darkness and necromancy based, so I imagine a lot if saves and conditions will be going on.

Quick game style questions:

How lethal to PC's should I be making this?
Should I be running the standard assumption that the GM is trying to keep the PCs challenged but alive...

Or 75-80 % PC fatalities.

Or "let the dice fall as they may"?

----

Second question: on a scale of "Super Friends" to "The Boys", what level of angst, "graphics", and "adult situations " should I be aiming for? My personal default is usually "pg-13 for violence" but I can go higher...

Put another way, I tend to more between "Hammer" and "Universal Classic", but I can go to An American Werewolf in London, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Species, or The Fly (Goldbloom).

Esprit15

I err on "Death is a possibility but not a goal of the DM" if only because it can be annoying to be trying to balance between optimal decisions and "Okay but this sounds fun" as a player.

For edge, I would say TV version of The Boys rather than the comic.

Pyrophilios

I built Nale to be hard to kill - as long as the challenges are fair and the risks are clearly communicated, you can up the danger level.
I just don't want situations like: "You didn't check the ground before you sat down - a snake bites you and now you are dead."

As for edge: flowery descriptions of gore and violence doesn't do anything for me, but it doesn't bother me either. I'm more interested in the tactical aspects - for me it's more important to know that my opponent is dead than how he died.

Paddywagon Man
2023-07-14, 12:56 AM
Similarly, Jeffy is hard to kill and I've got an unexpected backup, so don't feel obliged to pull punches. Even both Jeffies dying I'm down to roll with and come back with another flavor of villain, though I'll do my best to keep it from happening!

Also, abandon Joker, Dan Backslide is our new purple-suited savior

Edit - I'm fine with gore, it will probably come up a bit in Jeffy's posts unless another party member doesn't appreciate it, in which case I'll certainly respect that.

I recommend using sheets over docs, personally. I’ve used it to great effect for things like this ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jgV3IpPwpge5dmJUmxmNBUna6qCIMOgd5uAD2eJ1uIQ/edit).

2. Are you volunteering to be our mapper?

So, would you all prefer a roll20 sheet, or a setup with google docs (tables unfortunately won't let me put an image in the background)

roll20 would have the benefit of fog of war, so you don't have to reveal the whole map.

Third option would be to build the map room by room accordng to the GM's descriptions - after all, it's an old school adventure :smallwink:

jakarta
2023-07-16, 05:30 AM
Whichever works better for you is fine.

I haven't used Roll 20, but I'm willing to give it a try.
I don't have a credit card (hard for a non citizen to get in Asia), so I'm limited with on-line options.

I was planning for the scouts to provide an incomplete map.

Revealing one room at a time would be nice.

Pyrophilios
2023-07-16, 11:22 AM
Allright, let's try drawing our own maps on google tables - if it doesn't work, I'll switch to roll20 (which you can use for free btw.)

Stelio Kontos
2023-07-16, 04:17 PM
I am, in fact, at least sort of able to move the token - by dragging one side at a time (to resize it, effectively), and then the other. Not super ideal but it works, which is more than I can say for whatever the hell it is I'd try to do.

jakarta
2023-07-16, 05:54 PM
I'm able to select the token, then grab it in the middle. It's a bit finicky, but maybe it will get easier with practice.

We'll start with the snowfield scene I made using a Google doc, and move on to what Pyro is making later.

On my map, when you place your token format it to "in front of text".

Edit: and it will probably be easier to work with if you set your viewing scale to the higher end when placing and scaling tokens. Just put their feet on the bottom line for their 5ft squares. .

Pyrophilios
2023-07-17, 05:55 AM
It's not ideal for handheld devices (but roll20 would be even less useful there)

jakarta
2023-07-17, 06:17 AM
I'm on Samsung Android phone, an old MacBook, and (if I hadn't left the cord in Yangon) a Win 7 laptop. When I return to Yangon on the 10th, my Win 8 laptop will be available, and I'm getting a Win 11 laptop the through my schools indentured servitude program (called "technology extension") in late August.

This should suffice to run PF1/3.5 characters through a mostly 2e version of a 1e module series with occasional 3.x and 4e "updates".🙃

I'll launch the mission in a couple hours.

Lewis is standing there with his hands full of other people's stuff and has a good idea of what is going on.
Do you want to free action drop what you are holding, or move action set the bags on the ground? or do you have a hands-free spell to cast?

Xav

I'm definitely free action dropping everything, then casting Haste and taking my sword. But I'll put it in IC thread in a few hours.

On ogres and will saves - according to RAW, the effects of Storm are applied at the end of Lewis' turn, and only for those, who are in the Storm's range - that means, 45' radius around Lewis. So, I guess, ogres are out of range for now.

jakarta
2023-07-19, 12:48 AM
45 ft radius of what is basically Stinking Cloud? This party is going to be fun indoors...

The veil stays centered on you, or is it stationary once created, or what?

The veil stays centered on you, or is it stationary once created, or what? It's centered on me, and moves with me. The properties might be changed to Fort or Will save and different effects - sickened/blinded/nauseated, or deal damage to ability score. Again, if it's too inconvenient to roll saves each round, I'll switch to straight damaging Storm.

jakarta
2023-07-19, 05:28 AM
It's fine.
We do need to read up on the nauseated rules though.

We are waiting on Paddy to post. I'm not sure if Lief is subscribed to the threads. I poked the player with a PM. If there isn't a response, in a while the character will just get squashed by a snowball.

jakarta
2023-07-19, 08:32 AM
Sickened
The character takes a –2 penalty on all attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks.

Nauseated
Creatures with the nauseated condition experience stomach distress. Nauseated creatures are unable to attack, cast spells, concentrate on spells, or do anything else requiring attention. The only action such a character can take is a single move action per turn.

--
I said the teleport was causing a sickening effect, so Tor will be at a -2.

Creatures failing Lewis's Nausea Storm will be screwed much worse.

Paddy:
You don't need to roll to find Jeffy's gear. It is in the Bag of Holding that Lewis dropped. Your problem is that it takes a move action to pick up the bag, and a full round action to retrieve a specific item as it currently contains more than a back pack would.

J2 can see the bag were his gear is. Mentha is still holding that bag... behind that wall over there....

Connors is the npc, who got trampled by the mammoth...

Xav: Can a storm veil mage make it rain? Snow? Is that save vs nausea once or per round?

Situation: The party members who hadn't made it out of the LZ starting zone were trampled by a fire mammoth. The fire mammoth does extra fire damage with natural attacks, including trample. If hit, you must save or be caught on fire (reflex to not catch on fire)

The mammoth also has a fire aura that does damage if you get within 5 ft of it. (fort negates)
The mammoth's trunk attack has a 10 ft reach.

The rider is a frost giant with a spear. He threw an ice bolder and probably hit Jeffy.

Xav: Can a storm veil mage make it rain? Snow? Is that save vs nausea once or per round?

Well, Lewis knows only 5 Storm veils. One of them is active now, and switching them takes time (it's shaped right now).
Other veils effects:
- Ethereal birds, that deal sonic damage and confuse on Will save
- Insight Bonus to Caster Level
- Acid damage and reducing hardness/DR
- Rain, water damage, lowering light level, penalty to Perception and range attacks

Save is vs poison, not nausea. Effects last for 6 rounds. Save is made once per round, at the end of Lewis' turn.

Also: Don't forget, that all characters (and allied npc's) are Hasted (so, +1 Ref)

Lewis' saves:
[roll0] - Reflex
[roll1] - Fort

I rolled saves for the mammoth and giant when they entered that Area of effect for the veil. They passed.

Sometimes I will just roll at the beginning of the creature's turn instead if the end if your turn to simplify things given the format.

I'm responding on phone while supervising the kids at a park, so I don't have my references. PF poisoning is just a penalty, right?

As for an earlier question, both if the Mammoth's fire abilities are extraordinary.

jakarta
2023-07-22, 12:08 AM
I guess the rain veil might negate the "caught on fire" problem, but maybe only worth it if the water damage is less than the fire damage

Xav
2023-07-22, 01:17 AM
No problems with simplifying, your way is just a bit more benefitial to the players.

Poisoned is a condition, in the case of this veil poison causes nausea for 6 rounds.

Well, I can negate damage for allies, but I can't switch Veil at will - 3 arcane points needed. So, if aura is not spell like, I've got no such possibility.

While I'm not completely helpless without the Ioun Stones it's certainly a big nerf.

If given the location of base camp Jeffy could always try catching up later with his Longstrider wand to cut travel time

There will be a briefing and planning session shortly .

For historical background, this was originally a tournament adventure.
These were used at conventions in team play with a scoring system.

The adventures were later rereleased several times and updated and expanded for different editions.

The mammoth riding frost giant with a party of ogres was the introduction to one of the expanded versions. In that one, the mammoth was named Smokey and was just a mammoth. I added a few fire templates to make it a challenge for PF "splatted" PCs.

The shark was just for fun.

We are now reaching the base camp of the original adventure, where a version of the original briefing will be given.

I need you to decide on marching order and if any of the group is splitting off from the main party.

If Persephone is going to look in 'her' bag, she should do so before the assault begins.

Nale would take point, though he isn't the best at sneaking - so any scouts should probably move ahead.

Guess I'll be a scout, considering stealth. I'll post later today.

Mentha will be part of team stealth. The skeletons will be ordered to follow behind, with Nale.

Also work and life have been a mess this past week and likely this week, so I’ll try to find a time to post when I can but I may be a bit slow for right now.

"take point" means "go first".

Though it is a bit confusing when Nale also says "scouts should go first" in the same sentence.

I think he is saying that he should be the "lead fighter" since he is a melee damage specialist set up for killing bug targets in 1 round.

Should Lewis and Mentra ho ahead of Nale, and if so, by how much?

Looks like we have a plan, more or less.

It seems to be wait at the tree line 500 ft from the compound for an opportunity to snipe the tower guard(s), then approach to tower, perhaps with some flying, with each party member either disguised or invisible.

I need to know:

a)How long the party will wait for a sniping opportunity.

b)What buffs each member will use, when each will be cast (before leaving cave, after arriving at tree line, after sniper shot is taken, ect...), and the duration of each buff.

c) the disguise and base dc of seeing though it (or roll your end of the first opposed check after casting/donning the disguise.

I just noticed that we have some interesting scrolls with us - a 10ft range invisibility one for example. That would be ideal to carry two snipers through the air to the tower - so no need to wait for a good opportunity - we can just fly close and look in from above

I'll be using a blurred movement spell just before taking my first shot. It's 1 min/level.

Disguise self kinda sucks, but it's a DC 14 total, and I'm not trying to impersonate anyone specific with it.

Just to clarify, the tower has a roof with an overhang.

Oh, I meant sneak into the tower and slaughter those folks.

I anticipate that the "ground team" will mostly be casting buffs as they move up on the tower for several rounds.
The "air team" may continue. I think the sniper needs another action before we roll initiative.

XAV: what would be Lewis' move sequence to cross 500 ft of open ground?

Xav

Totally open ground without any cover? What's the terrain? Snow, dirt, stone?

jakarta
2023-08-25, 07:25 PM
dirt and low tree stumps.

There is that pyramid shaped thing 200 ft SE of the door, but otherwise open.

XAV: what would be Lewis' move sequence to cross 500 ft of open ground?Considering almost total lack of cover - something like teleports between tree stumps.

Warping Surge - 45', spell-like, standard action. So, if necessary, Lewis can re-stealth.

So I'd that 45 ft per round, or 30 ft move action then 45 ft standard action teleport for 75 ft per round?

If we are going stealthy - then 15' move (with Stealth), then teleport.

If I see all this action with a giant above, then I begin moving a bit faster. So, 30' move (with penalty to stealth) and 45' tp.

Stelio:

"Heart pounding, Torsten arrived at the ***tent door,*** the cacophony of the music lending itself well to a stealthy approach. He cracked open the door, if he could, just enough to peer inside."

Um... what tent? Did you mean the pyramid structure 200 ft from the door to the compound? It isn't a tent...
Would you mind changing that to just the front door of the compound? the party is all over the map enough as it is...

I don't mind you checking out that location, but it would take a couple more rounds to get there.
Sorry if I misunderstood where you were going before.
