THIS POST WILL LATER CONTAIN A CHARACTER SHEET.

A very generous starting package. The only stipulation is that one of us must be a bear tamer, and the other an Ice Witch?

I've made the bold assumption that you ought to be the ice witch BananaPhone, since that's sort of.. your jam. But if you want to be bear-gal, that's alright too.

Since we're taking 'hard' starting careers, are we risking being odd fits for out jobs with a normal "Roll stats in order", or are we rolling two sets and choosing, or rolling and assigning...?

Perhaps if we roll two sets each we might come out with a sense of which of us is best suited for which roll, or something like that.

roll two and assign

MrAbdiel
2023-07-03, 11:09 PM
Wow. Very generous indeed. Do you guys both have access to the Kislevite character creation stuff, or need it?

I am hoping for a nice, tough goon to bodyguard the ice witch.

BananaPhone
2023-07-03, 11:43 PM
So you're wanting to play the goon/thug/tough guy/bear tamer for the Ice Witch?

I can work with that. 1,500 exp would bring them up to Ice Maiden. (basically journeyman wizard, ready to embark out into the world, in theory)

MrAbdiel
2023-07-04, 12:06 AM
Yeah, that works for me.

Oof.. My stat rolls weren't spectacular. I have to choose between maximum wounds and minumum wounds with worse stats... but at least my Fate came out alright in both cases.

My philosophy is that in small games, you need all the stat you can get. We're the only ones here to make rolls. So I'll take minumum wounds. A lad born skinny with a lot to prove.

Height: 6’2”.
Hair: Light Brown
Eyes: Dark Brown
Hag's Curse: (1d100)[64] White fur is banned from this child’s life. Not Ungol
Born: (Automatically) North.
Settlement size: Oblast tirsa (rural village)
Tirsa Name: Zhedova
First Name: Vladimir
Surname: Bondarenko
Metronym: Matryonasyn
Diminutive: 'Vlinka'

Oh, and I should roll for the bear too.

[roll0] 1=Male, 2=Female
[roll1] for the name. Alexei
[roll2] for the diminutive - 'Alusha'. (Had to reroll to make it make sense)

Side-shaved heads appear to be relatively popular from that (huge) region of the world :smalltongue:.

And yes, initial money: [roll0] - 164gp, pretty good.

MrAbdiel
2023-07-04, 02:47 AM
I am purchasing a bunch of things including a pack animal and tents, so don't worry about those. I'm really leaning into the "Man Friday" vibe here. I'll be able to get Heal in my next career, too.

Alright. I mostly have Vladimir sorted out. He has his bear; and also a oblast elk (pack animal), and three dogs. They are kislev herd dogs by breed, not combat dogs; they are not trained to fight. But they know how to gather fetch sticks (firewood fetchers) and importantly they know to bark in alarm if someone they don't recognize approaches at night. I have three fancy Kislevite tents. One for the Ice Witch by herself; one for Vladimir and Alexi; and another for the Elk. Standard procedure is a dog sleeps in each of them and spasses out if someone intrudes, waking everyone up.

BananaPhone
2023-07-04, 04:06 AM
Can the dogs set the tents up?

MrAbdiel
2023-07-04, 04:16 AM
They cannot, no. Sadly. That’s Vladimir’s job!

Lmao. We are both gonna have decent Fellowship but neither of us will have charm. I foresee a future of shouting our way through social situations.

Your horse can stay in the elk’s tent!

BananaPhone
2023-07-04, 04:44 AM
Hah the Ice Witches don't really do the whole "Charm" thing. They don't "charm" the people of Kislev as much as they just stare at them and allow thousands of years of cultural terror to weigh upon said victims mind to compel them into taking the wise course of action. (i.e giving the Witch what she wants)

Though amusingly, Witch Apprentices get Academic Knowledge (Magic) but not Read/Write, somehow. Because we all know those illiterate people that get into STEM degrees at university.

Lol. I think we’re both going to have to divert a little to cover critical skills. I might dip vagabond or something after warrior before veteran, but generally I’m going in the buttkicket direction.

I’m also done I think, Bramble. Did you have a notion of what kind of game you wanted to do here or should we be setting our own heading and peddling for our lives?

BananaPhone

The Ice Witch pathway is a little more..."interesting", or upfront than the standard wizard.

It's Witch Apprentice > Ice Maiden > Ice Witch.

As opposed to Wizard Apprentice > Journeyman Wizard > Master Wizard > Wizard Lord.

On the face of it, Ice Witches also branch out into other area's of life, gaining social skills from Ambassador entry etc. (though only Noble-born typically become Ambassadors, as the Tsarina won't allow herself to be represented by mere peasants)

Ice Witch has the coveted Magic 4 advancement and a bunch of skills. However, their only social skill is 'Intimidate' and their social talents are "Menacing or Unsettling" lol.

Zhukov could be different and be a relatively 'nice' witch that looks out for people, but that's not the reputation the ice ladies of Kislev have lol. They're seen as saviours, feared and respected, but they're also terrifying and in Slavic tradition they rule through a mixture of fear/respect.

An interesting entry in their total war entry:

"The Ice Witches are firmly on the tzarina's side in Kislev's many political conflicts. She is currently the most powerful Ice Witch in Kislev, and some say she is a reincarnation of Miska, the first Ice Witch and khan-queen of the early Gospodars who founded Kislev.

Katarin, in turn, favours the Ice Witches, granting them legal privileges similar to those extended to the Kislevite nobility. The main weakness of the Ice Witches, from a political perspective, is that they have very little to do with the common people of Kislev, remaining aloof while studying their magic.

The level of power they bring to the tzarina's service is highly valuable, but they do not bring any other supporters with them. Individual Ice Witches who could win a place in the affections of the people would be especially favoured by the tzarina."

See this is why I assumed you didn't want to be the bear guy. :D

We will probably want to bring on some retainers - a surgeon for example - once we have a roll on with our rhythm. Once I get into soldier I'll be able to apply poultices but I'll never been particularly intelligent.

Oh I'm happy to be the bear-guy lol. I was honestly leaving it up to you :P.

I just read up on them a bit because I almost rolled one in the Tomboys games. So instead of Regine you almost had a vodka-drinking Ice Witch from Kislev speaking with her heavily accented, hilariously is-it-offensive-or-endearing broken Bretonnian blasting people with ice.

Gonna get clubbed over the head by the fae and begin a custody war between the big ice spider of Kislev and the Lady!

I figured you’d want to be the ice queen because it felt like your style. But also I wanna be a man with a bunch of animals. You’re doing the hunting though, with that Outdoor Survival.

And later we are gonna get a sleigh pulled by elks.

the brayherds here tend to be on the smaller side, but if the kossar is this worried, you would rightly think that something has caused a joining of brayherds, or something is pushing them south towards kislev.

as for tactics and organization, its the usual bum-rush the walls, possibly carrying crude ladders and other implements of crude destruction

Katarina is casting Blizzard: [roll0] +3

21 - cast!

Blizzard has no range, it's cast as far as the eye can see.

"A swirling flurry of snow and ice rises from the land, freezing and blinding all in its path. You can cast blizzard at any point you can see. Distant targets may require a Perception Test to see clearly, as dictated by the GM. Those within 24 yards of the target take 1D10 damage every round (roll damage once, and apply the result to everyone in the area) and reduce their line of sight to 6 yards (3 squares). Blizzard also imposes a -20 penalty to the Ballistic Skill and Agility tests of all in the area and reduces movement by half."

So she'll cast this as soon as the Brayherd moves into visual range, as they start psyching themselves up. She'll cast this centred on the largest mass of them (which I assume includes the sorcerer).

BananaPhone
2023-07-08, 08:20 AM
They'll take: [roll0] this round.

Assuming they can run 4 squares a turn, that's reduced to 2 squares a turn. And it's got a 24 yard radius, so those closest to the point will take 13 rounds to be clear of it.

I'll roll a bunch of rounds worth of damage for anyone caught in the Blizzard, and let the GM decide the narrative:

Round 1: [roll1]
Round 2: [roll2]

Katarina is casting Hailstorm: [roll0] + 3 TN 14

19 - cast!

"You channel Ice Magic upwards, forming large chunks of ice that fall t the ground with horrifying speed. Use the large template. All creatures beneath the template take 1d10+2 damage each round they remain in the area. Also, they reduce their range of sight to just 4 yards, take -20 penalty to Ballistic Skill and Agility Tests and halve their movement. As a full round action and with a successful Challenging (-10) Will Power test, you can move the Hailstorm 2 yards per point of your magic characteristic."

She is casting this onto an area a solid mass of beastmen will encounter once leaving the Blizzard.

It lasts for 2 rounds.

I just realised that Hailstorm isn't on the Oblast Witch spell list, so I'll just have her conjuring her Blizzard still, so ignore the damage roll; she'll cast again next round.

Wfrp is also hard to scale for. Those two bolts flying at Kat could have done almost no damage or instantly gibbed her, depending on the D10’s. Magic especially is like that - PC’s need to ice enemy casters quick fast because they can’t dodge or parry their stuff, and there’s no hit roll - just the casting roll which stands in place of a hit roll.

I don’t play in games with bad GMs my bro.

Or with bad players for that matter. We’ll use this as an inciting event and make it our mission to find and kill that emissary one day; though we might have to seek to plan it carefully so not to be exposed to such a deadly barrage.

Don’t sweat it mate. Katerina’s debut was freezing to death a bunch of beastmen and then being struct down by a gnarly magical bolt to the head. That’s a reputation we can start to build on. And any day you don’t lose a fate point is a good day.

Everyone within 24 yards (I guess the beastmen too) take 12 wounds.

Whether she has her 5 toughness or 5 toughness + 2 armor, Katarina is at -5 or -7, with a 15 critical roll, to the body, she's dead.

Rest in peace Katarina Zhukov, Ice Maiden, killed herself trying to cast a lesser magic spell.

Could spend that Fate Point as per page 198 to preserve her, but she's out for the rest of the scene, and there's a 6-round 1d10+2 hailstorm hitting everyone within 24 yards lol.

Unless Bramble deems that fate points can be used to avoid miscasts by re-rolling a casting die. So we'll just have to wait and see :p.

MrAbdiel
2023-07-12, 07:55 AM
Lmao.

Or maybe, because this is like the first scenario, Bramble might just cut us a break and let us off the hook for that particularly calamitous roll and say the spell just fails or something. Rules may be rules, but the rulebook does say:

"...If preferred, the GM can improvise appropriate Chaos manifestations. If
this is the case, use the manifestation tables as a guide to length, severity
and type of effect caused by Tzeentch’s Curse."

I think it's fair to apply that to glacial surge as well, since it's just a variant of Tzeentch's Curse. They have a similar disclaimer in the mutation section that says "if a player rolls a mutation that just completely screws up the game then maybe you wanna just GM fiat that a bit."

ALSO, I might suggest that Ice Sheet was the more important spell to cast anyway; and despite the fact that both Ice Sheet and Aethyric Armor are both half action spells, you can only cast one spell per turn - just like you can only make one attack action per turn.

So maybe we just forget about the Aethyric Armor, hey? :D

BananaPhone

Or.

Bramble is cool with spending a fate point to re-roll a single casting die, this time  lol.

Jeez, this poor girl. Taalia fought a troll with her bare hands and hasn't had this rough of a time lol. Sniped by a level 4 wizard from across the map and blasted into the afterlife, then drawn back by ace healing only to blow herself up and nuke half the town trying to cast a lesser magic spell that'd give her 2 armor.

They really are onto something when they say stuff like "This is a Slavic story and so happy endings are not allowed".

ALSO, I might suggest that Ice Sheet was the more important spell to cast anyway; and despite the fact that both Ice Sheet and Aethyric Armor are both half action spells, you can only cast one spell per turn - just like you can only make one attack action per turn.

Go ice skating, take a nasty fall and you'll find out why lol :smalltongue:.

Woo! We live! Goats die! Circle of life.

That 100XP is going straight into career shifting to Soldier. Oh, and I need to do Alexei's advancements too; he gets half my XP. I meant to roll those... Hmm.

EDIT: Or... Hmm. Maybe... I should go into Animal Trainer right away. That'll certainly make it easier to advance my bear, since I have to make training rolls every time I buy an advance and if I fail the XP just vanishes into the ether....

Lmao! Doesn't matter, I don't have the trappings for either! Time to save a little while longer!

Entering a cave with an old woman with a black magical staff, beckoning us to stare into magical ice with a promise that we'll totally be rewarded. Yeah, not shifty at all.

you have not heard of the bitter glass, but the cave practically thrums with ice magic.

if rumors are true, this is the baba yaga, the oldest ice witch. she arrives in times of prophecy, and offers advice for a cost

What castle lol, I'm looking at your last post and there's no castle. We went into the snow, got a lucky charm, and we're being followed by a feral kid? We just went into a castle where a witch made us look into her magical mirror?

Unless I'm missing something lol, I'm not saying you're wrong, just saying I'm not seeing it atm.

Sorry for the quick copy+paste update:

This happened once before and you might remember it, but I have an annoying recurring issue with a disc in my neck that herniates and makes my life miserable. It's very bad for a couple of days and then pretty bad up and down for a few couple of weeks after that. I've been incapacitated for the first bit now I'm going through the next part again. It gives me numbness and pain in the right arm with escalates when I sit upright at my computer desk, so i have to budget my time sitting and typing and then laying down again. I started studying again this year so most of that slim budget has been going to work I have to do. I'm still keen and I'll be back but for the moment my posting will be infrequent at the very best. As a player i'm happy for my companions/GMs to puppet my character as required; as a storyteller I'm pretty much stuffed for the moment.

Sorry for the disruption, I'll be back at it when I can.

Given our invisible magical opponent, I might suggest Magical Sense would be appropriate to roll. Perhaps you'll be able to detect where this.. spirit, or invisible wizard, is lingering their interest on their own pieces, and thus forsee some potential movement.
