Since we hit Page 51 on the old thread I thought I'd generate a new one before I disappeared to the Isle of Wight...

Spam. For RB, one-word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and browbeat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

Please don't post single-line posts alerting us to your current status—as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post," "first-page," and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait for 20 threads before making another one.

If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Ah, that new thread smell.

Everyone makes a big deal about fey touching cold iron, but it's not like, an allergy. It's a magical weakness. They won't go into anaphylactic shock if they touch iron, it needs to like, get in their blood.

... Lady of the Lake better make sure she masks up tight while forging, then. Also one could argue she's not fey, she's just some sort of bog witch and or mermaid.

Many depictions show fair folk unable to touch or potentially go near it. It seems more likely that they'd work other metals, possibly special metals mortals have no knowledge of. It's a little known fact that Excalibur is made of an aluminium alloy (although the scabbard was iron, it's why Merlin had it).

The legends say it was forged in dragon fire and was created by an elf of Avalon. There are two Excaliburs though, in the tales. One that Merlin put in the stone and the other the Lady held.

I thought the sword in the stone originally wasn’t (a) Excalibur, even if they often are merged in pop culture?

It depends on the telling.

sometimes Arthur pulls a sword from the stone and that makes him King. Sometimes he's gifted the sword by the Lady of the Lake. Other times he draws a sword form a stone but then it's lost, broken, or stolen and he receives Excalibur from the Lady as a replacement.

In versions of the story where both swords exist, the sword from the stone tends to be called Caliburn, but Caliburn and Excalibur are likely both derived from the Welsh Caledvwlch, itself likely derived from the Irish Caladbolg.

Malory used the same name for both the sword from the stone and the sword from the lake. You might argue that this was an error, and he didn't intend to do so. My belief is that Arthur's sword being Excalibur pre-dated any ideas explaining how he got it, so that when two different origin stories arose, it wasn't clear which should be the true Excalibur.

Geoffrey of Monmouth The History of the Kings of Britain writes of "his peerless sword, called Caliburn, which was forged in the Isle of Avalon", and doesn't mention the stone at all. According to him, Arthur is already known as the son of Uther and Ygerna.

Because the magic doesn't stem from the metal, at a guess.

Being forged in dragon fire is tight.

Oh, so suddenly we're not okay with fairies in lakes handing out swords as the arbitrators of social class? Some people have respect for tradition...

IIRC you're correct, and originally his entire set of arms was named. Then again Lancelot is considered canon despite being a French addition, so we shouldn't be too picky.

Umhmm. Adaptions tend to make it a powerful Holy Sword or give it special powers and such but to my knowledge its main advantage is just that it's indestructible.

Which sounds good on paper but in practice, its utility is still dependent on your skill with a sword and your raw physical strength: Just becuase it won't break if you try to smash through a hunk of granite with it that doesn't mean that you actually can smash through a hunk of granite with it.

The sheath meanwhile is depicted as making you magically invincible and having the power t heal fatal injuries and other **** like that. That's the thing that guarantees you'll win and tellingly it's the fact that the sheath is stolen and then lost that foreshadows Arthur's downfall.

Actually IIRC it's main displayed power is increasing the wielder's luck in combat, which is why Arthur dies in a mutual kill (Excaliburn becomes unstuck at just the right moment to strike the enemy who's about to kill him). It might also never dull but that's a less important quality.

Okay, this one I do know, it stops you from bleeding. That's it, but it's still ridiculously useful, if Arthur had had the scabbard he'd have survived long enough to get medical attention (although he'd likely would have had to deal with an infection). It's amazing, but he still ruled for like three decades without it.

It giving regeneration or the like is, I believe, actually a Fate/Stay Night thing.

According to Wikipedia (so take that as you will, in regards to reliability): "In the Post-Vulgate version, used in Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur for the second Excalibur, the sword's scabbard is also said to have powers of its own, as any wounds received while wearing it would not bleed at all, thus preventing the wearer from ever bleeding to death in battle." Not quite healing or invincibility, but in the same area, at least.

I think it might be a reference to the old "Hot Coffee" controversy with GTA San Andreas (I don't remember the details, I think it was like hidden minigame where the player character could have sex or something along those lines?).

Basically this, yeah. The idea is that if a lady asks you over for some "hot coffee" she's inviting you over to spend the night, since generally you'd have coffee in the morning after the ole shake-n-bake.

It's very silly and, as I said, extremely vintage.

I hope you do! :smallcool:

Nate's creative rise is really unusual, though. Like, he got a book deal after his webcomic became famous, and then at some point he became the lead writer in a popular TV series. There's obviously skill and hard work, but there's also an important element of luck.

Someone like Andy Weir may be slightly more typical—they started doing creative work in 2001, gained some level of fame in 2009, and then became Wikipedia-level famous only in 2015. That's a decade and a half of work! And there are other writers who never gain the same level of renown.

What? How did you get that from this?

Partially I'm not used to specifying that coffee is hot (unless getting it froma replicator), it's the assumed default for the drink. Mostly I'm making a bad joke because sex is like the third funniest thing in the world (after Milton Keynes and a lack of sex).

I'm basically a hipster with even worse fashion sense (although in the last year I've moved to jeans and polo shirts, and if I HRT I'll probably get some low cut blouses). I get into a lot of stuff long after it's cool, have no desire to run with the crowd, and have a disturbing tendency to fall into elitism (I dislike coffee bags on principle). My sense of humour is probably legitimately decades behind, I don't get what 'comedy film' means these days but find It Ain't Half Hot Mum hilarious despite the many offensive elements.

Nothing wrong with vintage stuff anyway, have you seen those dresses?

ETA: if you don't feel good enough than congratulations, you're already better than most people.

I should convince my friend to make more music. She's pretty good*, if she kept at it she could possibly get some airtime in a decade.

It's hard for sure. Especially for creative work, where feedback can be infrequent and misleading and the whole edifice is unfairly winner-takes-all.

So we learned how to fill out tax forms by hand in my high school economics class.

I'm pretty sure the teacher taught us wrong though. Had us calculate our income tax as if all of our income was taxed under the highest bracket and when I pointed out that this meant that someone who made more could come home with less she just shrugged.

It... doesn't work like that.

It may have been intended as a financial literacy + basic math exercise, though not a very good one if it didn't account for multiple tax brackets. Being taught to do this stuff by hand instead of relying on online tools is useful to gain a better understanding of taxes in general and to acquire some measure of financial literacy, even if in practice you'll be taking advantage of such tools anyway. Cultivating a deeper understanding can help when inevitably you do have to figure out something yourself, which may not be tax related and may not be entirely covered by available tools.

Same principle applies here. It's not about whether you'll have a calculator available or not, but about developing a basic level understanding of math and a degree of mental acuity which is very broadly applicable later in life. As well as prepping for college or university. Some kids will feel the call of Science! and they'll need it.

I'll be 28 this year, and I'm trying to get accustomed to the fact that I'm basically thirty. Hopefully I'll get used to it by the time I am.

Somewhere, in the back of my mind, 35 is still "old" - I think that's the one that's really gonna mess me up. I blame the Tawny Man trilogy and D&D 3.5 aging rules.

Oh God oh **** I'm getting old

I didn't have much of a reaction to turning 30 (probably because I already had a "What should I do with my life?" crisis when I was 25, which I somehow cured by getting very drunk), but instead I got upset two years later when I realized my younger sister was turning 30, which must mean I'm really old.

Speaking of my family members, I also remember getting upset in my early thirties when I realized that I was closer to Homer Simpson's age than my dad was. I think I'm actually close to surpassing him at this point (I'm 38 and I think Homer's either 38 or 39), so I suppose it's only a matter of time before I start identifying with Grampa Simpson. :smalltongue:

Econ teachers are pretty clear on this. That saying is explcitly for things like gifts and charity. Even if you don't pay for the lunch, someone else. Everything has a cost. Whether that cost you paying the restaurant cash or the restaurant paying the supplier cash and giving away the lunch, the cost is still paid.

Maybe, I know a few of them, despite protests to the contrary. No guarantees it'll get to the correct one.

Why would you want to be short?

Gothic lolita dresses look better when smol, less dysphoria, I'm practically a hobbit anyway, even grew up in a shire, got a shot at becoming the world's third greatest lover...

Econ teachers are pretty clear on this. That saying is explcitly for things like gifts and charity. Even if you don't pay for the lunch, someone else. Everything has a cost. Whether that cost you paying the restaurant cash or the restaurant paying the supplier cash and giving away the lunch, the cost is still paid.
...I feel that the phrase isn't used in that context very often. I pretty much only see it in cases of it being used with a similar intent to "wait for the other shoe to drop."

Why would you want to be short?

Becuase it gets a bonus to my preferred form of cultivation.

Edit: Also, sometimes I want to be smol and cute.

A pretty universal experience, there. (https://youtu.be/n57aQQsQiwc)

Quick, everyone older than me in this thread tell me how young I am, and that I'm basically a child, and that I'm going to be young forever.

Just realized I had this quoted to respond to all day and just completely didn't post it anyway hey: 27 is young go back to bed you whippersnapper (I'm like 32 or some **** I don't recall, time is a flat round-shape and doesn't exist anymore).

...standing offer for anyone by the way. If I stumble across a reliable means of bestowing Eternal Youth and a means of easy long-distance travel ya'll jus have to ask.

Technically if you did, we wouldn't be able to tell.

the jumpchain glossary informed me that if someone goes on a jumpchain, time is stopped for the original world of the Jumper plus all the worlds they visit on the jump once they leave, time only resuming once you either fail your chain, choose go home or ascend.

thus to anyone's perspective on the outside it would be as if you instantly became a super-powerful being out of nowhere for no discernible reason.

but sounds like a good deal, I'd take it.

If things go mostly to plan, I will be driving up to Canada next year and not coming back.

The "not coming back" part is the portion that sucks. I feel like I'm being chased out of my home by bigots, crazies, and those who generally want to make even existing here cost an arm, two legs and 3 fingers. I genuinely don't feel safe here any more, and don't think I ever will again.

TBH it doesn't even crack the top 20 of ones I know about, and may not hit the Hot 100 for people who actually know comics.

...Did you know Marvel comics retconned history so that Gwen Stacy was secretly having an affair with Norman Osborne and that she secretly gave birth to his twins before she died?

These are apparently Norman's bedroom eyes. I don't know if it was a joke or true, but i read somewhere that when tbey did conventions, anyone who asked Patrick Stewart why baldness wasn't cured in the 24th century waa kicked out. I always figured they could have just answered with "by that point society has progressed beyond finding baldness unflattering" or something like that.

Oh man, you're reminding me of healthcare admin. Pre-certification is a delightful little scam we came up with down here. Especially when it needs to be recurring.

Apocryphal or not, that's a good response.

Yeaaah, it sucks. It double sucks because all of this **** has to go through Inuvik, because that's where this particular branch of government brain-thinking is, instead of Yellowknife proper.

First, I never suggested you take over the world:
....Are you encouraging me to go out and acquire the means to take over the world?

Yes, actually!

Second, even if you did, that does not mean it was done under illegal or treasonous methods (it's actually quite difficult to commit treason, at least in the US. And if you're from here then you can't commit treason against any other countries by definition). But focusing on those methods is putting the cart before the horse. Get those means first!

Ah...well, honestly, still doesn't crack the top ten but that's a WAY funnier topic.

Not so much dumb in the moment, but mildly interesting and raises a few questions: did you know Sabertooth (Wolverine's brother and primary rival, very serious guy with very serious problems or whatever) originally appeared as a two-off Iron Fist villain and was mostly used to fill out a roster of villains that looked vaguely like horror movie monsters (Sabertooth being the Wolfman, of course)?

How he goes from that to being the aforementioned brother and rival of Wolverine I have zero idea.

Logan's dad is very good at what he does, and what he does makes babies. It's a little known fact that half the current generation of superheroes are Logan's siblings. Hence the long lives, they all got them from their dad.

The "not coming back" part is the portion that sucks. I feel like I'm being chased out of my home by bigots, crazies, and those who generally want to make even existing here cost an arm, two legs and 3 fingers. I genuinely don't feel safe here any more, and don't think I ever will again.

The fundementl misunderstanding is that you're assuming that I'll immediately demand power or that the arm and deterrents are the only things I'd be getting.

I was under the impression that acquiring the methods by which one could take over the world—came before actually trying.

At some point, I'm going to need military forces and a weapon to use as a deterrent if I actually plan on taking over the world.

Ergo, I would need them before I started.

And I'm reasonably certain that I'd be in violation of the law and depending on how I acquired that deterrent guilty of treason in the process.

Thirty-five is only "old" in the sense that, if by then you haven't figured out your identity that's separate from the world and your identity that's part of the world, you'll likely die before you can recover your birthright agency.

If you just want to talk about feeling old, I still remember when my nephew was born and he's getting married this summer.

Yeah, I rationally know thirty five isn't "old". I have plenty of friends in their 30's. But like I said - you grow up on the "old and grizzled" version of your favorite fictional character being 35, and you have a rulebook for your favorite past time telling you middle age is 35, and it's going to leave a mark somewhere.

I think I'm doing pretty well as far as the factors of maturity that I find relevant are concerned. I just still have this pattern of thought saying "one day, when I'm in the best physical shape of my life", despite that very likely being behind me now (as my knee can tell you, after this last visit to the Mont Blanc.)

another thing is not having romantic love and a family yet, despite that being something I'd like to have. I used to imagine/assume that I'd be a "young dad", and it feels weird letting that go.

That sort of stuff. "When I was 27, I built a birdhouse with my mom" stuff, to quote the song I linked earlier.

The concept is Einstein built a time machine and removed Hitler to prevent World War 2. This lead to World War 2 being instigated by the Soviets instead. Red Alert 2 is 30 years later, World War III in the 70's but with advanced technology that's pretty crazy due to the timeline shifting. Things like bionic squids and attack dolphins with sonar guns mounted to them. Real-time strategy. It was glorious.

Red Alert 3 was another timeline shift to refight, since canonically the Allies win, and this time the Empire of the Rising Sun joins in with its army of mechs, so there's a third faction and everyone wants to kill all the others.

Endurance and strength training won't really help much with weight loss. IIRC you want light cardio like elliptical, and keep your heart rate around 133. Do that for like 40 minutes or so three times a week or more and that's a decent weight loss routine.

Don't have access to an eliptical. Been getting my cardio in using a body cycle—basically peddles set on the floor.

Gentle peddling keeps my legs moving but doesn't overly strain my knees or raise my heart rate so... Not the worst thing I could be doing. I'm trying to get at least 30 minutes of that a day.

Endurance and strength training is becuase, based on my research, building muscle helps burn fat.

I can probably push myself a bit more with what I'm doing than I am without problems and there are probably a few more exercises I can do.

Building muscle does burn fat, but there's two issues: it's less effective than weight loss exercises, and muscle weighs more than fat.

Building muscle does burn fat, but there's two issues: it's less effective than weight loss exercises, and muscle weighs more than fat.

the main concern with weigh loss is loss of fat.

Like... My main problem with my recent weight gain is that it's not realistic that I'd have gained that much muscle in that amount of time based on what I've been doing.

I am confused becuase I'm less big. Pants tat were too tight three months ago are now too loose.

also, having just googled "most effective weight loss exercises" some of them aren't meaningfully different from what I'm doing now.

Edit: Also, my mom thinks the weight gain might be related to my insulin. I'm on a brand that has weight gain as a potential side effect.

My niece, who epitomizes smol-and-cute and hovers precariously near the threshold of underweight, uses one when she goes to her nutritionist.

So far this morning I have done 1 pilates-style leg raises with each leg, 120 seconds each in three different basic sitting and supine yoga poses, fifty-second in something called a "half shoulder stand" though I don't think I did it right, 50 crunches, and a sixty-second high plank.

Haven't done my cardio yet but I'm feeling pretty good right now.

We've got a lot of stuff that you'd eat with some kind of sauce but I ain't got no sauce and ain't got no low sugar ketchup to make a small batch of sauce... and since it has to last a week, I'm gonna make a big batch on the stovetop tonight.

I'm gonna try and bring to culmination my experiences in experimenting with sauces on this one. I'm gonna have to use sugar-free breakfast syrup instead of that brown sugar-flavored sugar substitute I used last time since we ain't got none but otherwise, I think I have everything I need to make it perfect.

Spice blends gonna be paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and cinnamon. Wet ingredients are gonna be red wine vinegar, soy sauce, worstersherhire sauce, red wine vinegar, and maybe a dash of lemon juice for an extra touch of sourness, I'll decide in the moment.

The base will be tomato sauce, the syrup, and American-style yellow mustard.

I may or may not recite the Song of The Witches as I tend to it as it cooks. (https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43189/song-of-the-witches-double-double-toil-and-trouble)

Where is that museum located? I want to know what city I need to make an example of when I announce my plans for world domination. I think perhaps a machine that makes it rain black pepper from the skys, curing the people with constant sneezing and nose itchiness is a sufficient punishment for that atrocity.

Normally I do not believe in guilt by association, but the people of that place allowing for the celebration of such blaspheme against the culinary gods to go on in their midst makes them all complicit in the crime.

Sometimes it needs to be disgusting on a moral or emotional level.

It's the kind of thing you'd expect in one of those "small town is a front for a murder cult" horror stories.

You know, your car breaks down in a small village in the middle of nowhere and while you wait for the mechanic to come to you you stop at the inn for dinner since it's about that time and you ask what they serve and the server describes that to you and says that it's is a local favorite, especially around this time of year since making it is a big part of preparing for "The Festival" and that's the hint that if you don't get the hell out of dodge you're gonna be sacrificed or cannibalized or something.

And why am I not surprised Sweden makes the top ten? Why my countrymen insist on ceremonially eating rotten fish, I'll never understand. Not really that different from traditional methods for creating goat's milk cheese, just outsourcing the milking of the nanny goat to the kid you are sacrificing to obtain the rennet from anyway. And not "just-born", just young enough to have fed only on its mother's milk.

See the secret here is that a lot of modern day problems have their origin in the past. It's not prophecy (not all the time anyway), it's generalized awareness.

Futurama's writers were a bunch of Harvard allumni who absolutely saw writing on the wall and wrote their comedy future show accordingly.

I was careful to only do exercises where I could sleep off the strain so I could do it every day, but what I was doing wasn't enough to make meaningful progress so I had to push it.

Now I'm probably gonna be unable to fo anything with my core for the next few days which basically blows my routine straight to hell when I just got back into it.

Are you sure that's going to happen? The first time I stopped following my training routine for a few days after starting it, I was worried I'd have a hard time getting started again but it turned out to just feel so good getting back into it that it was never an issue.

I do agree with you about keeping a daily routine though. It's possible it's not ideal from a training perspective (as I too have heard of rest days), but at least now I'm mostly alternating between arms and legs on different days.

It dramatically changes the threshold for what "too hard" means, in your favor. If you just go every day without a rest, youre not going to recover well between workouts, and your upper limit will drop pretty sharply because youre still out of it from the last workout.

And now you know why rest days are important.

Exactly.

Like, dude, you said you researched and muscle burning does burn fat. That's completely correct. However, it replaced fat with muscle, which weighs more, and also is like 4-5 times less efficient at burning fat than doing cardio within the fat-burning heart-rate range. You say you want to have a routine every day, despite this being leds efficient than having a set routine on certain days every week so you can accommodate rest days.

Like, yeah, your plan will work. But its less efficient, will take longer, you'll work harder, and you'll feel worse. It's like wanting to take a cross-country trip because you've never left your hone city so you buy a cheap gas guzzler. It'll work, sure. But there are way better ways and its trivially easy to look up efficient exercises and tracking methods, and get advice on how to make routines you can stick with.

If you want to focus on fat loss by strength training with no recovery days, that's certainly your perogative.

And, being fat, my resting heart rate is higher than a healthy person's.

I can't do enough cardio to lose the weight on Cardio alone. Not without wrecking my body or pushing my heart rate above the threshold.

The muscle-building exercises are supplemental to the cardio.

I also find it to be highly unlikely that I gained roughly 20 pounds of muscle in a month of doing light cardio and then another five in two months, roughly a quarter of which I spent barely working out at all.

Edit: Semi-related, according to the high protein breakfast I just ae in the hopes of speeding up muscle recovery, my barbecue sauce turned out perfectly despite my having forgotten a verse from the Song of The Witches.

Rater, this isn't something you can negotiate away because its inconvenient. You have already hurt yourself trying to do that. You will either learn to adapt and incorporate the rest days or you will end up in the hospital because you hurt yourself too badly to recover from on your own. I appreciate that it becomes harder without the routine. But doing it this way will hurt you, very badly.

Not harder: Impossible.

If I don't do it ever day it will take me weeks to motivate myself to get started again. It's already happened once in the last three months.

And I'm not exactly asking for advice, I'm bellyaching because my attempts to adjust in response to lack of results resulted in an injury and I can't adjust that for the few days it'll take to recover, by which time my motivation will be shot so it could well be a month before I get this fixed.

And like... I don't have access to a pool. Or an elliptical machine. Or free weights.

I have a set of pedals on the floor and a yard I can't walk in due to extreme photosensitivity and a bunch of chickens that don't respond to me and a stepfather who gets pissy whenever I try to get up and walk around and doesn't believe in the existence of said photosensitivity.

I also have really bad knees and ankles that are almost as bad which drastically limits how much cardio I can do in a day if I want to avoid having my knees replaced before I hit middle age.

Rater, just for context, I was born with an ankle deformity that severely limits how hard I can go doing things like, for example, running. I will never be an athlete, I won't join the military (not that I'm all that broken up about that) and cardio sucks to even think about. So understand that while I absolutely understand and do have a ton of sympathy for you... I don't have a lot of sympathy for you. You're making excuses, and you know you're doing it. Those are all problems you can work around. If you genuinely don't want to do it, thats a choice you are allowed to make, but you need to be honest with yourself about it either way. If complaining about how it sucks helps motivate you, cool! Do it! As long as you aren't saying 'I can't do this" because its a lie that you will want to hide behind to get out of it.

I am not making excuses. I am explaining why your advice is unhelpful.

I have problems. I am trying to do what I can in regard to those problems.

You are insisting that I am doing it wrong and that I need to do things that I know for a fact will injure me far worse or cause worse long-term problems by ignoring my existing problems in order to deal with the problems instead of doing anything actually helpful.

Build a routine including rest days. Yes it's harder, yes you'll almost certainly fall off several times and have to start all over again. The advice I've always been given is to stick close to two days with exercise followed by one day's rest. But if you're calling it impossible then you've already failed, whether that's by not exercising at all or by exercising every day.

I'm sure that anybody who exercises for a living would smack you upside the head for being an idiot if you continue as you are.

Impossible is me spontaneously growing female sexual characteristics. Unlikely is DataNinja going on a date with Emma Watson (she's pretty but nowhere near Data's league). Difficult and annoying is where you are.

It's not like you live alone, so use that to build a support network for your exercise. Make a calendar of when you're going to exercise and rest then have somebody else check you're following it if that'll help.

Y'all probably need to get off Rater's back, I think. If you really want whats best for the guy let him make his own choices.

Anyway I got an invite to the blueski ap, so now I can fail to make myself look appealing on TWO blue hell-sites. Hell yeah :smallcool:

I actually like Rater, so I'm disinclined to let him go about seriously hurting himself if I have a say in the matter. Maybe he'll ignore me, which is his right, but talk is cheap and I have words to spare.

Also congrats!

Build a routine including rest days. How do you think I know that I can't? Have you been operating on the assumption that I haven't tried?

I knew based on previous experiences in my life that if I don't do something every day it's impossible for me to stick to the routine.

My recent experience of demotivation is just more data supporting that conclusion.

We are insisting you are doing it wrong because you are doing it wrong. Not having rest days has a very high probability to result in injury. Let's ignore that its exceedingly inefficient and yoi will be working harder to achieve less gains. You will hurt yourself.

I'm not really pushing on anything else. But no rest days is 100% doing it wrong.

As I have explained more than once, the alternative is not doing it at all. Doing it inefficiently is infinitely better than not doing it, yes?

I can moderate my exercises so that I won't need rest days. I have been for all this time.

I just pushed myself too hard once. The solution to that is to dial it back down a little bit, not abscond my routine entirely for something that I know won't work, nor to relace my current exercises with ones that I know will cause me long-term injury.

For this? Yes, you've made it pretty clear you've been operating under a 'no rest days' system.

For other things? Who the **** knows! Maybe you tried taking a rest day from gardening two years ago and it killed your ability to do it for six months (actual example is arbitrary). But you have tools and other people to help you (and if they care about your health they will). So you fell off the train 99 times, but that doesn't mean you'll fall off the 100th time, and hopefully you'll be healthier for it.

No, it is not better. Not when the result is hurting yourself. If you genuinely, sincerely, not-making-excuses cannot make yourself include rest days, you need to stop entirely. Trying to push through it is "fork in an electric outlet" stupid. Talk to your doctor and ask if theres an alternative that might be more feasible. But do not continue to hurt yourself.

I take offence to that comparison, UK plug sockets are fork-resistant! You need at least two forks to get shocked!

Also yes, Rater talk to your doctor and trust Qualified Medical Advice over Some Idiots On The Internet. But I suspect they're not going to be thrilled with your current plan.

I have gone three months without hurting myself.

I pushed myself too hard once.

I know what I'm doing.

The alternative would be to change my diet but... I can't afford to do that anymore than I already have.

I can't do any exercises that require leaving the house or equipment other than what I have.

It's either keep doing what I've been doing... Or do nothing.

Edit: also I did tell my doctor what exercises I was doing and that I was doing them every day and there were no complaints.

And doing nothing is gonna put me in an early grave.
