View Full Version : What Have You Been Painting? Miniatures in Gaming

Greetings all,

In addition to RPGs, a do a fair bit of miniature wargaming as well. This means I paint a decent amount of miniatures.... but not that well. I figured I wasn't the only one on this forum painting miniatures, so I wanted to start a thread about it. I encourage you post up your WIPs, final models, or just talking about miniature painting.

To start off, I finished my pile-of-shame last year (gasp!). That's right, no new minis to paint at this exact moment. However, digging through my old stuff I found a blast from the past, a set of painted, original Harlequin models from the late 80's.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXLFEYZDm5FXis3c6NeZmUBswQ8dttrNkl83ujTS_tAQ wha8m_dA6biRxSkiUiTwQCJ34Hcw8Tznvju_biOgnT7KPvlwkZ 7EkXF_ZM7ccK5mGng8QcW36r3jYImEFK7yjvZnTZdZyrvqafLJ i5XpJUmxTcjIgCWypTrDuMHL1ItSubeA_HKOL1WdWc/w400-h339/IMG_3236.HEIC

I almost never repaint old models. There is little point to do so. However, I felt these guys deserved a bit better. Plus, I figured I could use them for Kill Team. I primed them, gave them a dark grey wash, and then drybrushed them white. They were ready to go.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYdBuAhvz0PXuRVaDsyCZAys8D5FgVboecJyQZ6Un5KD UZ9SRI0vcNzoJqEuZDzSzWvbBw0GdqRev3ctkbwpTRZDmSzoG3 _gnASGg_yRudxyvAtHibbHmfK1IcVOkldx5tcZ8CX7ZOdf2rS5 O2gFNt0ULWkT6kGfjScigqg2eHP9tiiD6A8jKyikCn/w640-h446/IMG_3218.HEIC

I then used Armypainter Speedpaints and went to work. I finished them all in about a weekend.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVG8CbPsA7S6TiG13N3fNXkl1MlsqiTGEZIWPDu4OuRu dXCo-7lfxiiDBj45t09Ewn01hBV7114eBNQm3tg8MQqSCTlwEYVpl-bmOixOqPSo3vQZ6Lk3ByWBtpfXQa8GQQe0KxqJseC977xWmRPl GifAsYfBYiwxRkQ1ULOYIm2DUHN_omFJUYCRNN/w640-h450/IMG_3260.HEIC

If you are inclined, you can read the gory details, the mistakes made along the way, and the specifics on my blog here:
http://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2023/07/on-painting-desk-back-to-80s.html

Now, I got a big shipment of 6mm Egyptians and Hittites for the Battle of Kadesh, and that is very different from painting 28mm sci-fi clowns. Onto finishing those off next.

In the meantime, what have you been painting? What is on the desk? Pictures please?

LOVE those old harlequin models!

Sadly, home repairs leading to other home repairs (repairs leading to the discovery of additional things that need work, not repairs that break other things) have blocked access to my normal work area.

My current plan is to combine some empty hot cocoa cans with some pipes, platforms, old inhaler cartridges, and medication lids to create some multi-level mixing tanks. I need to make a bunch of elevated walkways, too, both with and without handrails (easier to fall off without rails). But I need some room and time to work, first.

I've been painting my Mansions of Madness minis over the past few* months.

These are the latest I've completed - thralls:
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53077617789_8c87787e14_m.jpg

They came out pretty well for my level of skill/patience

I am very slowly working on this Lliogor. It's much bigger than anything I'm used to painting though, so taking me a long time. It's got lots of fiddly bits, and I should have painted before gluing it to the base (hadn't really planned to
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53076849592_b6e36a93da_m.jpg

Without any good guide for colours I've been using a Mantis shrimp as inspiration (they are supposed to appear reptilian, but the mini doesn't look more crustacean to me). I've not really got the right colours for it (need more metallic I think), but it will have to do.

Alos picked up a Firefly game recently with minis of the core crew, so I've started with Capt'n Tight-pants:

PS - piccies have come up very small for some reason - any suggestions on to get better sized ones? Different upload site maybe (using Flickr free atm)

I'm not seeing them either, but I usually use Blogger and/or Google Photos. I do not have any good advice on that.

I love the idea of basing your painting on Crustaceans though.

Finally, I have started a Battle of Kadesh project, and have got to work on some 6mm Egyptians. The army is like 22 60mm bases. Here is what I have painted so far:

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1XBHo3e7aE4wZVlfIYlY7YK8dMB-SSy3wuHcAvzEbyq3lQicHRuFpV79cvaDfI2RDngytCUgY4ZuGA 4D6IbbDrstQFNtlkI25HF9_Ci0nGkiA7sGNiul9W8tJGN97LSm M33_N3rE3OdH4-aIgHkL2ohCNusX7J85u3aZVXoZFcLNWaep13jhuzstHbXo/w640-h534/IMG_3371.HEIC

If you are inclined, you can read about the project and get more details on my blog.

Last year I started painting a lot of the various boardgame minis I have accumulated over the years, and there have been a few highlights. The last two larger projects I did turned out quite nicely, both Reaper Bones minis that got donated to me by a kind acquaintance. Regular 33mm mini for scale.

I am not ashamed to admit I spent more time thinking about what color scheme to go with than I did painting it. And it took a fair bit of time to paint.

If you want a cheap Dracolich, apparently Michael's is selling a plastic one this season. Sgt Slag at Dragonsfoot made one last year that turned out pretty great (https://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=90596), and is looking at making a new one this year (https://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=91545).

I may need to see if I can make it over to Michael's in the next few weeks...

Currently working on some scenery: A trio of storage tanks as a Christmas gift to my Usual Opponent (Warboss Mogar from my Warpstrike rules):
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/794253887686967337/1157815863504810075/What_am_I_painting.jpg?ex=6519fb8d&is=6518aa0d&hm=f9a18245129f036ed526a73f6574659162ebe41dffd9f56 f87061c770c0b6323&
There will be a ladder up to the top of the smallest tank, and from there to the grey tank, and from there to the green tank. The piping will lead from green to grey, from grey to blue, and from blue to a portable barrel. There will be partial handrails around the tops of the tanks (to allow people to fall off , and to allow connecting walkways).

I'm also trying to come up with a good color scheme for my Eldar Fire Dragons.

My fiancee's aunt's game shop revealed unto me a treasure, lost since the days of old: two sets of miniatures from the classic Games Workshop game Mordheim, one box of Undead and another of Witch Hunters. With my customary battle cry of "I don't really need to eat this week!", I acquired them, and will set about assembling & painting them with all good haste. Now I just need to find someone who still plays...

I'm sure there are iron-age wargamers who can provide you with Picts...

Will do once they're finished. In the interim, here's my very first effort in painting from earlier this year, some Black Ark Corsairs (technically they're Aeldari Reavers or whatever from AoS, but they're clearly just Black Ark Corsairs on round bases.)

Greetings all,

My first painting for 2024 was a quick Kill Team. The Hand of the Archon is now painted up and ready to hit the table. I all ready had a Craftworld, Harlequin, and corsair team so it seemed appropriate to get the Dark Eldar team. It looks like I am the "space elves" guy at the True Crit Gaming Guild.

With the Egyptian force done for Kadesh, it was time to turn to their foes. The Hittite army will be a similar sized force in bases, but it has a very different composition from the Egyptians.

For this force, I am still using Baccus 6mm minis on 60x60mm bases. Most of my techniques for painting these guys will be the same.

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEsX0hMmgkj539HBdNmo-gbw6sFFqBjF6erVNB_UuA8pvkNdq3RDZ0o60hR3iHZ0U6EK4iC cF3vwjHbH01P9mMVu6gOjEJTr4aq0l8wEOwVXzc-2yrdxB5HvPiXV2AZuE7UOiZ_W3PFXj21zWLZBHkRxl6Z1_3GPc VYj-kMngoWakbkUVeNfanQK_3sic/w640-h510/IMG_3740.HEIC

I am still forging ahead on my Battle of Kadesh armies that go along with me latest "In-Progress" rules set In Strife and Conflict. This project began in earnest in 2023, but the rules were written for about 5 years now. Hopefully this is the year I can get all the post-production wrapped up and I can release it.

To that end, I have been working diligently on my Hittite forces. Good progress so far with much of the infantry getting done.

More importantly, my 3D printed Kadesh arrived. Thanks to Kelly Watson for designing and printing it out. Kelly said he was planning on making the design available, so I will let you know when it is.

The city can fit on a CD as a base, but also has two expandable pieces to make it bigger and add some variety. I look forward to painting it and putting it on the table.

I took a long pause away from my brushes, but I'm slowly going through the Mansions of Madness investigators

Last painted : Charlie Kane, mayor of Arkham City

Very nice work on the suit. Hard to see the eyebrows in the photo...what did you choose to do there?

An assortment of GW beastmen...

Blending on the horns looks very nice...I always preferred the ram heads to the bull heads, but yours are done well...particularly the one on the far right of the photo.

I am now done with the Egyptian Forces and Hittite forces for the Battle of Kadesh. In addition, I also finished painting up Kadesh itself. All the pre-work needed to play the scenario is ready. Just need to test the scenario.

You can see a ton of pictures on my blog here: https://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2024/03/on-painting-desk-battle-of-kadesh.html

However, here are some highlights.....

All models are from Baccus 6mm and are mounted on 60 x 60mm bases. Kadesh is a 3D print designed by Kelly Watson.

Impressive lineup! I think my eyes would implode if I tried to paint this many 6mm minis ^^

(And I just love the city!)

I would be very happy with that paint job! Well done!

I'm really happy with him, yeah. But you know how it is, you take a picture of your mini and everything you half assed or forgot suddenly just jumps to your face ^^

Thanks. Highlighting fabric is one of my favorite part in mini painting. There's something soothing in just following the volumes with my brush. :)

I usually don't paint the eyebrows, unless they're very bushy or very dark. The way I paint them usually doesn't look good.
Instead, I prefer to darken the eye and highlight the brow. That gives the illusion of eyebrows without actually painting them.

I painted my full Octarius Boxed Set for Kill Team in the first quarter of this year.

You can see the Orks and terrain on my blog if that is of interest to you.

Not sure if I will be using these guys as a Kill Team per se, but I have all ready used the bits n bobs in actual Kill Team games. Therefore a net win. I will probably use these in various small skirmish games I have so a good addition to my painted minis collection.

I've just come into a copy of vintage HeroQuest. I've painted up the four hero figures and the Chaos Warriors in an afternoon. I love these miniatures with their clean, simple designs and straightforward posing; they are frankly a much better fit for my meagre painting skills than many of the more detailed modern figures:

Very nicely done!

Do not discount your painting. Your work is clean, clear and very solid.

A few intermediate techniques would make a significant difference and would really show you how well you have already done (specifically a touch more shading and a little highlighting...and maybe a change in the glossiness of the finish). You're already well ahead of most people!

@E: Why no base work? You base your historicals...just curious!

Without a gloss varnish, how is the Barbarian supposed to look covered in baby oil, like all great warriors?

More seriously, highlighting on faces and skin textures is still a big challenge for me.

Been working on some stuff for my Mousillon army. First actually finished model is a metal paladin on foot with hand weapon and shield. Got some other stuff getting near completion, but also some stuff going on that's taking me out of the head space for painting.

Ah, but that is the point of brush-on coats...to apply oily sheen to barbarian bodies without it getting everywhere else!

Understandable - recommend just a nice wash/shade with a good warm color...that will give much of the depth without too much work.

Nice - I like the muted color finish that looks worn but not dirty (hope that makes sense and is reflective of intent/how it looks and not just a byproduct of the camera shot).

Thanks.

Muted colour is semi-intentional. Was originally going for a more bright yellow, but I couldn't get it to work on the caparisons of the mounted knights I started on, so I'm sticking with this more dull yellow because it's easier to work with, with just a slight highlight of brighter yellow. Armour is meant to look a bit worn, trying to get the impression of the paint being worn away on the edges to distinguish with the more dull grey-shaded black fabrics. Issue with black armour and black fabric being side by side.

Being muted, tarnished and grubby suits Mousillon anyway, and I intend to lean into the more dark corrupted aesthetic of Mousillon, rather than when it was still shiny and heroic.

@- Mordar- I traditionally only paint my bases some earth tone. My IG Vets I used too dark of a speedpaint, and it looks black instead of dark brown. However, I don't care enough to re-do it because it looks fine on the table.

My latest is a Chaos Guard Kill Team from a 3rd Party.....

If you want to know more about the maker, how I painted them, the load-out, etc. it is all on my blog. No need to go into it all here.
