300 was given a better grade than Michael Clayton? Do you simply despise your brain?

Anyway, my rating of 2007 is: Marginal quantities of Tom Waits in film. Hope to see an Improvement in 2008.

No Bourne Ultimatum? I thought that was pretty sweet. The first was still the best though.

The movies I am looking forward to are
Golden Compass
I am Legend
Walk Hard

There were probably a couple other ones in there as well.

You are much kinder to Pirates, Spiderman, and Ghost Rider than I would've been. Ghost Rider was tolerable, but Pirates and Spiderman...ugh.

The only movies that really stick out in my mind are Bourne Ultimatum, Ocean's 13, and Harry Potter (and only because my wife's a complete die-hard fan...). Everything else was pretty forgettable.

Ocean's 13: 7.5 (They seem to be getting worse, both in acting styles on originality. It's like they take as much cool as they can think of and shove it into one movie. Which works sometimes (aka Cowboy Bebop) but sometimes it doesn't. Kinda half-half for me.)

Black Snake Moan: 8.0 (Kinda actually liked it. Wasn't expecting much, got something good. Soundtrack wasn't bad either.)

Beowolf/300: 5.0 (They were different movies? :smalltongue:)

Spiderman 3: 4.0 (Neeew director! Kevin Smith! Kevin Smith!)

Before The Devil Knows Your Dead: 8.5 ("It's not fair!" I liken this movie to Fight Club. Man porn kinda? Sure. And I don't mean the sex scenes. Messages you don't expect? Absolutely.)

Bella: 6.0 (Ew, I thought I would like this as it came highly recommend. Nope)

Gone Baby Gone: 8.5 (Again, a meaningful think-y movie where you least expect it. I actually liked Ben in this movie.)

The Bourne Ultimatum: 8.0 (I miss James Bond...this kinda makes up for it with more cool action stuff.)

Ratatouille: 8.0 (Hey looks, a good CGI Disney movie! :O )

No Country For Old Men: 8.7 (I really like the Coen brothers...so I might be a bit biased...but you should like them too anyway.)

Across the Universe: 8.7 (First didn't want to go at all. Glad I finally went.)

I saw a lot more but most aren't even worth mentioning.

Ghost Rider wasn't too hot, but I wasn't too impressed with most below it.

I enjoyed Spiderman III myself, and I thought World's End was the best of the year. Whats the matter with it?

Bourne Ultimatum I personally thought dull and nothing more than an action movie with practically nothing to it. I didn't even remember having watched it until you mentioned it.

I personally thought Michael Clayton was as entertaining as a dripping dishrag. The plot was really unimaginative and they convoluted bits of it for no other reason than to convolute it. Also, I don't think the actor is cool. Never have.

Hmm...I didn't really see a lot this year...um...

1. Pan's Labyrinth
—Favourite movie of the past few years. Hemingway and C.S. Lewis, together at last.

2. Across the Universe
—Fun purely for the songs, really. Love, love love.

3. PotC III
—Eh. Exciting enough conclusion. It had Jack Sparrow and a cyclone. That's about it.

4. Spiderman 3
—Please note: not everyone in the world is inspired by Spidey swinging by a giant American flag.

5. The Simpsons Movie
—Illustrates why the series should've died ten years ago: stupid wacky plots and lame jokes. All intelligence has left.

That's all I think I watched. Still planning to see The Golden Compass and I'm Not There before the year is out.

I've seen so many movies that I don't remember them all, and I'm not even sure which were in 2007.

However, I will say that Pan's Labyrinth is one of the best movies I've seen in a few years. Also, Children of Men was AMAZING, and if you haven't seen it, you should do that now.

Pirates 3 was decent, Spiderman 3 I hated, The Simpsons Movie was alright, I hated 300 (and think I'm the only one), liked Transformers, and loved 1408. Ratatouille was unexpectedly cute.

Best: Edit: I see the Pan movie didn't come out this year. Though in all fairness I saw it this year... Anyway. Every new movie that I've seen in 2007 has been forgettable.

Worst: Spiderman III

Also bad: 300.

Merely OK: Shrek the Third and Ratatouille.

I don't watch many new movies because I don't like to waste my money because I've been known to just turn it off or walk out if I think it's crap. I was very close to walking out of Spiderman III. I wanted to see Venom; I wish I hadn't bothered and saved myself some time.

Hmm, in no particular listing order.

Bourne Ultimatum - I'm a pretty big fan of the series, still looking for the books. Good action movie, but the camera was a little spazzy at parts. I'll give it a 4/5.

Across the Universe - Good premise. I'm not a big fan of the Beatles, but the songs were well preformed by the actors. I thought the music detracted from the plot a little much at points, as if they tried to cram as much music into the movie as they could. I'll rate this as a 2.5 out of 5.

Transformers - Great movie, can't say I found anything major wrong with it. 4.5/5

Live Free or Die Hard - I really enjoyed this, although I don't really want another one made. Willis is getting a little old for these. 4/5

Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End - Excellent movie. 5/5

EDIT: Forgot about Spidey 3 and Shrek 3. I'll give both a 3/5, because while they had good parts, the movies could have used a little more work in the writing department.

Movies I'm looking forward to for the rest of this year
National Treasure: Book of Secrets
I am Legend
AvP: Requiem

I don't get out to see movies nearly as often as I'd like, however...

I enjoyed 300. Sue me.
Stardust had its moments.
Fantastic Four = yawn
Tranformers, I think bottoms out my list. Not enough contempt for this movie.
Across The Universe - far and away my favorite for this year, of the ones I've seen.

I don't believe I've seen any of the other movies mentioned so far. Not for lack of desire to see them as much as lack of will to go see them instead of waiting for the DVD.

The only 2007 movies I've seen are 300 and Simpsons: The Movie, and I'd give around 8/10 to both of them. I think some people expected too much from them, and it's a general hip to dislike them so many people follow, but I found them both amusing and enjoyable, though for different reasons.

Hmmm, well I don't watch movies often, but looking at yours, how I would change it:

Pirates down a little bit
Simpsons up a little bit
Harry Potter maybe down about 0.5

And I need to see a lot of those movies up a lot.

300, Ghost Rider, Simpsons, Golden Compass, Blades of Glory, Shrek III, Transformers and Beowulf all got less than the Lovecraftian hate-fest that is Spiderman III?

I mean, I'm not claiming that any of them were classics or anything (although I loved Blades of Glory and honestly believe that Transformers is the best disaster film I've ever seen) (and Beowulf was damn good) but worse than that crumbling ice-berg of disappointment and shattered dreams?

Havent seen any mention of Hot Fuzz, one of the funniest movies I have ever seen.

I loved the New Halloween. First horror movie that I seen in a long time that creeped me out.

300 and Ghostrider nearly stopped me for going to any other movies this year. some of my least liked movies i have ever seen.

Harry Potter was just to chopped up and missing so much explination, it was like watching the cliff notes verson of the book. I had so much hope for this movie since it was my favorite book of the series.

Spiderman, has some good and some bad parts. To me it was still above average movie.

Sadly that is all I have seen probably because of such a bad start to the year I just never felt like spending the money on the movies.

I'm curious. My brother and I were discussing the possibility that the love/hate of Transformers falls along generational lines. It makes a bit of sense to me. That movie had about as much resemblance to the Transformers that I watched and played with as a kid as Christopher Lambert's Beowulf (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120604/) does to its namesake. :smallannoyed:

Spider-Man 3: Too long, too many characters, too many villains, too many plot holes and a new chapter in the love story between Peter and Mary Jane that can be charitably described as "humdrum."

But still light-years ahead of Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four (either one, take your pick) or 300 in terms of quality. A bad Spider-Man movie is still better than all the Daredevils, Punishers, Elektras and Catwomans combined.

Haven't seen Golden Compass yet, but I'm pretty sure it and Sweeney are going to be the only great movies this year. (Order of the Phoenix was the best Harry Potter movie yet, with a life of its own unlike the first two, and making internal sense unlike the third and fourth, but it's merely good, not great.)

I liked the Simpsons movie more simply because I saw it with cousins that I only see a few times every year. It was a movie that had some really funny quotes paired with a plot that served mainly to deliver them. All in all, some of the episodes of the show were better than that movie.

Yarr matey I be piratin yer list and usin it fer me own list!

9.5 - Beowulf
9.5 - Transformers
9.5 - The Simpsons Movie
9.0 - 30 Days of Night
8.5 - 300
7.0 - P2
5.0 - Spiderman III
0.5 - The Invisible

As you can tell - I watch a lot less movies. Also, you have no taste :smallyuk:

Seriously dude - Spiderman 3, better than Beowulf, 300 and Transformers? They all had better everything. Spiderman 3 was just whiny crap. It was Spiderman vs. Emo Spiderman. I suppose I just find it upsetting because Venom was always one of my favorite characters. Too bad they ruined him utterly. And that you rated The Invisible that high on the list.... I don't know what to say. That movie was absolutely terrible. It should have been called "Emo: The Movie" or perhaps "Captain Emo". I am sure they saved a ton of money in editing... that movie was so emo it cut itself.

EDIT:

2007 isnt over yet! Be patient!

No kidding. We still have AVP Requiem, which looks as though it may not suck.
We also have I am Legend, which also may or may not suck, but has a lot of potential. Sweeny Todd looks to be full of win. Dude - Depp and Helena, in a musical - about murder, revenge and sweet, sweet pies? That is so cool. And for Christmas!! Charlie Wilson's War looks good too; as long as they don't fudge the details or gloss over just who Charlie is funding. :smallwink:

Heh, I only got to watch all mine because my sister works at a theatre and is one of those that actually prepares the film. Because of this my whole family gets to see early viewings of everything that comes out before the public does.

Before the last year I had watched... maybe 6 films on the big screen my entire life. Lord of the Rings trilogy, Star Wars II and III, and the Beverly Hill Billies. Thats IT.

Seriously dude - Spiderman 3, better than Beowulf, 300 and Transformers?
I thought Transformers and Beowulf stunk pretty bad. 300 only marginally less.

Hot Fuzz was an acceptable movie, and Dnevnoy Dozor (Day Watch) was surreal (even though it wasn't as good as the first movie).

Also to add another two

Aqua teen hunger force colon movie had me laughing (I didn't know what to expect, never heard of aqua teen etc before) 8.0

Hmm...tries to remember movies I've seen this year:

Oceans 13 was pretty good, I thought, but then, I love that franchise.
Order of the Phoenix was great
Enchanted was adorable
Across the Universe was a ton of fun
Stardust was good, but I only really liked it because it's one of my favorite books.
No reservations was okay
Because I said so is pretty cute
Hannibal Rising I didn't really like much, although as a fan of the franchise, had to see it to know the history
The Number 23 was actually pretty interesting
28 Days Later I didn't really care for
Fantastic Four: Silver Surfer...meh
Becoming Jane: Decent, but kinda dull

I didn't actually see much this year. But there's lot I still want to see.
Golden Compass and Sweeny Todd most notably.

I'm not much of a film person -- which annoys my girlfriend no end, as she wants to make film her career :D

All I've seen so far this year was:

Stardust 10/10. So awesome that I had no regrets about the fact that I had to see it on my own. I never, NEVER see movies on my own.

Order of the Phoenix 8/10. I enjoyed all the Potter films at the time, but the first four look like garbage now. (Like Zmek, it was my favourite book of the series too.)

Shrek the Third 4/10. Enjoyable but forgettable.

Hopefully I'll get to see The Golden Compass before the end of the year.... my sister will be home soon so I'll have someone to go with.

I've only seen a couple movies this year.

Stardust: 8.8/10. Supporting cast bumped up the score by two points. The performances by the lead roles were merely adequate. Choreography in the final fight against the witches was incredible.

Ratatouille: 8.5/10. Excellent kids' movie, good theme, CGI is getting better by the day. Did descend into teach-by-bludgeoning, or it would have scored higher.

Simpsons Movie: 6/10. Some funny bits, and a little goodnatured self-parody, but the life has been sucked out of this franchise.

Fantastic Four: Silver Surfer: 5/10. Camp value. Nothing much else.

Order of the Phoenix: ... can't remember enough of the movie to rate it. Which probably doesn't say much good about it.

Black Snake Moan: 9.2/10. Made of awesome.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was the absolute biggest waste of my time ever. That director took my favorite book, raped it, burned it, then had his way with it again. He took one of the greatest villains of all time, removed her toadiness, then flew over her evil acts with a montage set to a jaunty tune. No.

Pirates of the Caribbean was good simply because I watched Orlando Bloom get his still-beating heart carved out of his chest. Amen.

Has anyone mentioned Superbad? I think it should win an award for the most vulgar, tasteless movie ever. I did, however, enjoy the subplot with the cops. It was just ridiculous and non-explicitly vulgar enough to amuse my husband and me. Seriously, McLovin? Best name ever.

Technically a 2006 movie, but it was showing in 2007 and that's when I saw it: Das Leben der Anderen / The Life of Others was utterly brilliant. A rare case of an entirely well-deserved Oscar, and interesting because parts of it were filmed literally down the road from me. 10/10, genius.

Other movies I saw:

The Simpsons Movie: Really enjoyed this one. Very funny, AND adressed some of the things that were irritating about the series at this point (especially Homer).

Transformers: Enjoyable, but with lots of downsides. Too much focus on puny humans, Prime wasn't near badass enough, not enough Robots in general, the human lead was pretty bad. 7/10

Stardust: A very nice, cute little movie. It had fun, kitschy romance, action, lots of cliché elements (mentor and fast learning and such), and characters that felt likeable or dislikeable. 7/10

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Decent simple fun. Easy to follow even with next to no knowledge about the books or previous movies: Good guys, bad guys, Gandalfdore, all easy to grasp. Emo Potter himself was utterly horrible; the creepy little blonde brilliant. 5.5/10

Ghost Rider: Could've been good if the fights had lasted more than ten seconds each, and Nicholas Cage was horrible in his role. Not totally bad, watchable-ish, but Sin City or Spiderman this ain't. 5/10

300: Utterly, mindnumbingly horrible. SHOUTING NOT ACTING! Ugly-coded for YOUR convenience! Fight scenes that were simultaneously painful to watch with the constant slo-mo-fast-mo, and utterly idiotic if you stopped to think about them for even a second. Not a single even semi-sympathetic or halfway cool character. Nevermind that apparently Greeks were Nordics and Persians Sub-Saharans :smallconfused: 0/10, it really can't get much worse than this.

Really? The "intrigue" was just Barbosa out for himself(I know, who could have guessed?) and the Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly pair betraying everyone but each other. After the first little side-switch by them(mostly Orlando) I just wrote him off as a total ass and kept hoping for at least one of them to die, when the almost-end got me happy and then the actual end killed that until I realized that the kid looked a lot younger than ten years old. However, it was still much better than the second one and made me appreciate Barbosa and Geoffrey Rush so much.

On a scale of 1-10...

And yes, CoM did actually rate an 11. It's just that good.

Also, Pan's Labyrinth is for me somewhere up there too.

300 was boring, 3

And Beowulf should be somewhere around 8, because it's so funny... especially when no one else in the theater gets what you're laughing about. Except your mother.

Rattatouille 8.5, out of cuteness.

Order of the Phoenix 6, it was at least better than the Potter before it.

Spiderman 3 was decent, to say the least. 5
A bit too much angst in a film where it didn't belong that much. Should've given a bit of it to 300.

"Das Leben der Anderen" really was an awesome movie, I only came around to see it this year, definetaly worth it. 9.5

Full Metal Village 8/10, though the best documentation I have seen for years. And I knew fromt he beginning that it would be only slightly about what everybody thought it would be. :smalltongue:

Loved Stardust.
I made sure not to read the book (I have a great love of Neil Gaiman and I knew that if I actuly started the book I would just ruin the movie) so I just went to it and relaxed with a bunch of mates.
And I dunno... something just rang a chord with me. The scenery was ace, the acting strong all round and some fantastic sword duels. A real keeper.
