Prologue - 13 Scars

Taalia - AKA Nameless, AKA Mey-la, AKA Nee-Ruh-Kaha. Protagonist of The Power of One. Conspicuously tall young woman of unknown original; formative years spent as a slave first to the Norscans, then to the Skaven, before escaping from the Underempire into rural Tilea to start a new life.

Rashabang - AKA Papa Rat. Russet fur, turning to grey. Skaven Warplock Engineer, too obsessed with his work to be particularly cruel. Lack of sadism, and a pronounced appreciation for quality slave helpers, made his treatment of Taalia so mild she remembers it almost fondly. Took Taalia with him on his grand journey through the Underempire to a new opportunity, but was ultimately betrayed and forced to flee to the surface, driving her before him. Appeared to die from his wounds; but the body vanished from where Taalia buried him and his gear was stolen from her. Fate unknown; possibly dead.

Even as a slave to the vile ratmen, Taalia showed a good head for numbers and willpower that saw her through incarceration. Upon the surface and with an adoptive family, the girl is coming out of her shell and revealing that she is surprisingly ambitious, but also quite physically affectionate and loving, excitable, an eagerness for new experiences and a generous streak. Though her final personality is yet to solidify due to her relatively young age, she has so far shown grit, tenacity and ambition wrapped in a flowery, friendly and affectionate exterior.

Whether by an internal process, shaped by her honour-conscience adoptive father or both, Taalia has demonstrated a strong sense of right and wrong, often depriving herself of fortune in exchange for satisfying her personal code of honesty and abiding by her word.

Taalia is an unnaturally tall girl, and this is usually the first thing people notice. At six foot five there are even very few men who can look ahead into her eyes. Simultaneously, she is physically gifted with a proportionate, well-muscled physique that has been sculpted by years of labour and a protein-rich diet that has crafted a physicality that is in supreme condition and possessed of unusual physical strength and fortitude for a human woman, let alone one of her age. Nevertheless, despite her imposing stature, she has an angular, pleasing face that is marred by a scar that runs down from the left side of her forehead, across her eye and down onto her cheek, while all of this is framed by a crown of soft, white-blonde hair. Curiously, she has a genetic mutation known as heterochromia, which has made one of her eyes green and the other blue. When combined with her height, physique, scar and hair color, she is a striking figure that few forget.

When Taalia speaks, she has a smoky, sonorous and smooth voice that she has developed into an excellent Contralto singing voice.

I converted that 76gc she made from selling stuff, plus the last 23gc she had, to uncut gem-stones, as she had most of the rest of her money. That way she can sell some for Bretonnian currency and not lose half her wealth.

BananaPhone
2023-07-16, 05:48 AM
Out of that 76gc and 5 silver, she'll buy the following:

1 good large tent
1 good small tent
3x bedrolls
deck of cards
3x good wooden cutlery
2x tinderboxes

That'll cost 57 gc and 5 silver, I think.

I couldn't find the price or entry for an iron cooking pot, but we'll assume it costs about 10 silver, so she'll spend 1.5gc buying a Good quality one.

They can't rely on each stop being at a city now, they have to be more self-reliant/camping style.

Then she'll buy 1 uncut Garnet and 9 uncut malachite for 18gc, which will round it out. Then 1gc she gave to the messenger to head home.

MrAbdiel
2023-07-16, 08:47 AM
ACKSHUALLY page 57 of the Old World Armory has iron pots at 1gc; but you rolled pretty great at your haggle and dealmakering and so forth so you can have a Good one for 1.5gc all the same.

Work tomorrow, then orientation day for study (going back for a postgrad certificate in writing after failing to talk myself out of study again), but I'll try to post in the evening.

We are at Chapter 2 of Part two! Isn't that fascinating? We're at, like... the ~25% mark of the stuff I have planned! Milestone!

*Puts on mrAbdiels voice*

"Ohh but Fury roll comes after the damage roll, so, Ackchually!, you need to spend 2 FP's!"

An alternative is that she spends 200exp: 1 on a BS advance (taking her BS to 56) and 1 on Sharpshooter, giving her +20% to BS when aiming instead of +10%, meaning she'd hit the first shot of 76% but would have to spend a single FP to re-roll her Fury; which she passed!

Your choice, Sir :smalltongue:.

MrAbdiel
2023-07-23, 04:44 AM
Harrumph harrumph!

Well... Yes. You don't get to know if a damage roll is confirmed until you know if you hit, so all that knock-on damage would not typically apply. And you can't use FP to reroll confirmation rolls.

And you DEFINATELY can't spend XP mid-attack to purchase the advances you require to land a juicy hit.

...But I am an affable fellow, and I do like the dramatic nature of a killshot on that orc boss as you zoom by. And I am resigned to the reality of the fact that, in an online game, we witness things we shouldn't know till after the roll and this gives the player a tad more power. But I can compensate for that.

So I'm gonna let that hit, and give you a slap on the wrist for being contortive and sassy, but I will encourage you to spend that XP on sharpshooter and the BS anyway because this is a very fitting moment to gain such things.

Taalia will spend half an action to Aim and half an action to Fire. She will wait until it comes into her normal range, knowing there's no use firing out-of-range if she won't hit anything. She's got Quick Draw too, so she doesn't need an action to draw.

Sorry for the quick copy+paste update:

This happened once before and you might remember it, but I have an annoying recurring issue with a disc in my neck that herniates and makes my life miserable. It's very bad for a couple of days and then pretty bad up and down for a few couple of weeks after that. I've been incapacitated for the first bit now I'm going through the next part again. It gives me numbness and pain in the right arm with escalates when I sit upright at my computer desk, so i have to budget my time sitting and typing and then laying down again. I started studying again this year so most of that slim budget has been going to work I have to do. I'm still keen and I'll be back but for the moment my posting will be infrequent at the very best. As a player i'm happy for my companions/GMs to puppet my character as required; as a storyteller I'm pretty much stuffed for the moment.

Sorry for the disruption, I'll be back at it when I can.

BananaPhone

So every two or three days or so? About 2.5 a week?

Groovy. I actually really like this novel we've written together, so I'm happy we get to continue it lol.

I had 20 minutes to kill during a lunch once and for fun I actually copy and pasted the entirety of Act 1 into a word document...off the top of my head it was like 390,000 words, when the average young adult novel is 50,000 to 80,000 lol. We've got like 6 young adult fantasy novels first draft written already lol, and that's not including the Act II thread XD.

MrAbdiel

BananaPhone
2023-10-20, 06:57 AM
*Thinks and shrugs*

I dunno...change some things around lol. Warhammer is basically medieval low fantasy Europe with some high fantasy and low-key steampunk elements thrown in. Though thinking up a substitute for the Skaven would be the biggest hurdle, making a villainous race as compelling and viscerally repulsive as them would be difficult.

Outside of that, it wouldn't be too difficult to edit, adapt, alter and change lol.

Hmm. I am up for shenanigans, but not this time. Agility success means you get there in time; the marginal fail toughness means Taalia is going to arrive winded. Which, honestly, is more cinematic. Shadowing them across the countryside is a cool idea, but with them on wolfback and you on foot, you basically need to sprint to keep up anyway.

What's the range Taalia is away from the main fight?

You were 30 yards away when you aimed and fired the longgun. Strictly I should have given you a -20 penalty for being at long range (24/48 on a Firearm) but you nailed it anyway.

Blunderbuss range is 32. If you move and fire this turn, you'll be at 24 away, which is comfortable enough to hit quite a few of the enemy with the spread.

Rolling numbers bussed.

Wolves: [roll0]

Goblins: [roll1]

Damage: [roll2]

But that said, I will requires damage rolls for every hit individually; as the blunderbus is more of a spread of damage distributed among a group, and not a wheel-of-fortune spin that can fire either confetti or antimatter.

You may keep that 12 as the first damage roll, however.

MrAbdiel
2023-11-25, 08:48 AM
Good roll, and a sensible one!

You know that the practitioners of the White Wind, Hysh, are those most associated with banishment and magical manipulation of daemons. Priests of all major faiths have their own rituals and practices around daemon identification and exorcism, but they are often... rough. Daemons are no laughing matter; cultures that give an inch will often find themselves surrendering a mile. You know of two separate superstitions common in Tilea for discerning unfortunates who are being afflicted with dark magic - one involves packing garlic under the tongue and binding the mouth shut, which should cause a daemon dwelling in the mouth to start suffocating and panicking while the human is able to breath through their nose. The other is that daemons, preferring the frosty lands to the north, cannot abided sustained heat, and trapping an afflicted or suspected individual in a steam bath will eventually cause a manifestation of daemonic outrage. Both of these, you think since your brief but formal education in magical matters, are false measures, and have likely gotten innocent people killed over the years.

Without a narrowly skilled magical specialist (like the damsels Donallo sent his knights to seek.. unless Donallo is a lying daemon, and did no such thing), or a magical item made for the purpose, you have no wait of forcing an inhabiting spirit to reveal itself.

That said, daemons are monstrous evil spirits, but not all-knowing. They range in power and threat, so you understand, and simpler daemons might well be as ignorant about the finer points of their own nature as humans are about the workings of their marrow, or their humors. Fundamentally, if there is a daemon in this scenario, you are dealing with a liar; and liars can be exposed if you can catch them in a lie or fool them into exposing themselves. You have only one magical tool, and that is the ghost-killing blade from Trantio; but that won't avail you here unless you are going to kill them both and let the gods sort them out. Simple human cunning might be your best angle.

- Question the men-at-arms as best she can, trying to get their recollections of events.

- Question the surrounding townsfolk.

- Question the family members of the knights Donallo supposedly sent away.

- Get statements of events from Margot and Donallo themsleves.

BananaPhone! I return! Thank you for your patience. I guess you know my routine vanishings, by now. Boilerplate apology is the same as the one from the Warcraft OOC; forgive me, I'm doing a lot of apologizing.

All I can do is apologize again. I appreciate your toleration, guys. My excuse is lame - I sort of found myself the Admin for the Discord of Lava Lash, the main RP server in the current Season of Discovery expansion of WoW. I thought we'd get like 40 members and then I'd give it up and merge it with someone else's discord; but somehow there's like 600 people in there now and I'm anxious about trying to make it.. accommodating and helpful, and it stole much of my attention, and made it easy to rationalize neglecting my posts here. Sorry.

*Reads*

Hah, interesting. I actually had another little 'trap' devised for her. Taalia took what she knew of this land, that it was a deeply hierarchical society and applied her experience with the skaven (that someone higher up would find it utterly insulting that they'd be asked to do something that was a job for "the help") and applied it here.

She was basically seeing how the Lady of the castle would react to being asked to cook for peasants. Her experience and observation so far would tell her that this request is deeply insulting, like asking the First Lady of the US if she'd want to join in a mud wrestling competition, yet she made apologies for not being able to do so and even offered to help later.

Is this IC worthy, or am I reading too much into it?

MrAbdiel
2024-01-10, 05:15 AM
An interesting plan. I thought it was something like that. You can expect nobles to run the gamut from cartoonish exaggeration of toffery to the rare embodiments of the virtues they espouse, and different DMs will populate their worlds with different ratios, you know? And Bretonnia's the perfect division of this, because depending on how much the gamerunner likes Bretonnia, they either get envisioned as sneering, cheese eating frenchmen from a british propaganda poster or as the very soul of Charlemagne rendered by romantic poets. I'm trying to be even keeled as much as possible; Taalia just lucked out into a very good Tilean community for her recovery from lucking into skavenhell, so her perception of how bad the rest of the world is compared to Tilea might be a little skewed. Tilea was, at that time, not presently consumed by interprovincial wars, which is the problem they tend to get instead of tyranny.

All that waffle aside, I think you're reading correctly. You would expect a noblewoman to typically be a little insulted or stunned by the suggestion she should be cooking for the peasants. A particularly kind one might not be so stunned, or not be stunned by a foreigner having that expectation. But you'd expect the class inappropriateness to have come up, rather than merely a deference to a more skilled member of staff. You are right to be suspicious.

BananaPhone
2024-01-10, 05:22 AM
Heh yes, a foreigner, and a younger one at that, asking her to cook for peasants. I can imagine even the kinder of noblewomen gently, but firmly, commenting on how such an action would be inappropriate.

Lacking the memory/social reflexes of dressing decorum that should be muscle memory for a woman of her station.
Doesn't seem particularly hungry despite weeks of malnourishment.
Misses questions that should be deeply insulting for a woman on her station.

There were probably several, but any that were serviceable would have been carried off by the 'outlaws' for whom such hides have many practical applications as they filter back into the peasantry. You can have one, though; from the big one you killed. Bruk will have skinned it nice and clean for you.

Which topic is this, perchance?

Briant's fear that the demon wants them to sing for secretly malign purposes.

MrAbdiel
2024-01-31, 10:32 AM
Taalia has a pre-apprentice level of grasp of the formal study of the winds of magic; and there's nothing in what she has learned to suggest there is anything dangerous about singing to a daemon. There is no shortage of legends and old madre's tales about spirits and monsters that are variously soothed, repelled, or aroused by song. Witch women in the ocean who sing to hypnotize sailors; a tale of an oracle of the god the Imperials call Stromfels who stole the voice of a young duchess, for envy of her singing talent.

On the other hand, if this woman has a daemon indeed, any amount of cooperation with her whims might be playing into a scheme of one kind or another. Unless that's what it wants you to think. You're off the grid, here. Wariness seems wise, but you have seen what becomes of hunters of monsters who yield to every cruel pragmatism.

MrAbdiel
2024-02-20, 03:32 AM
Ho ho, tee hee! A ribald jape indeed!

More seriously... Nothing quiet that official could happen, I think. Peasants can be raised to nobility in Bretonnia, but it's a big enough deal that it's reserved for like.. really special acts of heroism by yeomen as recognized by the Duke of the region or the king, I think. A Lord can't just start knighting peasants willy nilly!

Where do you think this is, Jerusalem?

https://youtu.be/eMOPo7UewHs?si=b12jMKX1I8UhUKlz

On top of that, you're a foreigner, and a woman, and these are all obstacles. That said, being a foreigner can be to your advantage - Bretonnians and Tileans do different things, and who's to say that they don't make Tilean women 'knights' on account of having no noblemen of their own, hon hon hon hon?

You'll be travelling with Briant for a little bit. If you wanted to juke to Squire for a bit, picking up enough from him and the ambient chivalry culture to fill out that career, I'll let you jump to Knight to continue Taalia's autodidactic journey after that. Squire has a lot of stuff you may want anyway. That may buy you the time you need to get the very expensive trapping requirements for Knight, anyway.

TLDR, it's perfectly reasonable for a Tilean woman to start calling herself a knight and acting like one and establishing the validity of this claim by answering a duel or two from doubters. But Full Plate and Destrier are not yet in your back pocket.

So you're saying Donallo is going to get cheap with her reward?

On that note, Taalia still has about 1,400gc+ worth of goods she intends to sell in the form of her guns and jewels, which was the explicit purpose of transferring the currency into those sellable goods. (it beat suffering the exchange rate loss!) Maybe she might need to buy a horse at some point. If she did that she could enter the Squire career, but given her current exp expenditure, she would fill it out very quickly. There's just a few skills and talents that she doesn't have. Also, being a 'Knight' hasn't really been a dream of hers, as she doesn't even really know what they are, to a degree. She grew up in rat town, so the romantic and fantastical stories of heroic and daring knights and ladies escaped her during those impressionable years. Now, if it was something that was 'granted' or 'bequeathed' to her due to service, then I could see her being like "Oh, wow, what? I'm a knight now?!" and getting all excited and taking it seriously, but motivating herself towards that path, there are other options.

It's actually funny pondering what she would go into for her advanced career. Remember as well she's got this idea to become a wizard (remember that? lol) that sprung into her head since she was arrested, believing that the only means for security in life is to have power, and who in society was everyone afraid of meddling with? Wizards. She could be a student/engineer/artillerist, or she could go into sergeant then captain, or...well, keep collecting exp and see where the game takes her!

If the exp build up does get too much, she could go into Veteran pretty easily.

Yeah, fair enough. She's more of an all round adventurer than a knight, anyway. Squire's got a lot of things that might be good for Taalia's loose trajectory - etiquette, strike mighty blow, animal training, another hit of Dodge, Charm, Ride... But it might just be that I like that career!

Veteran I still writhe at a bit because it's ... well, it's about Veterancy. Taalia has awesome amatuer talent and potential on the battlefield, but Veteran (in this career-deep version of the game I'm running for you) is about fighting big battles many times. I'd want to tread it with the same level of attention that we did for Taalia's time as a slave, as a farmer, as a tradeswoman, as a militiawoman... Taalia could do it, but it would be something of a divergence from her current goal of getting to Altdorf and Nuln. I don't like it just as a combat-effective way to spend XP on the way there, y'know?

Honorable mention, by the way, to the Explorer career. Given the amount of roving Taalia is doing, it's a neat thematic fit. Or scout for that matter? Perhaps through outrider? Food for thought.

Ahh, being a bit tight on ye olde Veteran huh? Fair enough, very well.

I am a bit torn on spending exp to advance and keep her relevant in game, but also to save it up. If she does end up becoming Golden Gandalf or something, she's already 3k exp into life; that's a huge exp sink.

Explorer is a possibility. She'll need to buy a horse.

I definitely “prefer” you spend XP as you go and don’t try to save a whammy load to blitz your first year at magical Yale. It’s just less interesting to go “wow I’m suddenly the best at this hurrah!” Than it is to play out the learning. Taalia is going to be way over XP’d as a solo character. She’s gotta be rounded enough to overcome challenges a party of 4 normally deals with. Camping, navigation, research, social graces, all of that on top of combat. But I’m not short on adventure I want to expose Taalia to, so you can afford to have some deviations into other careers that interest Taalia on your way to glory.

Yeah, being a solo character she kinda does...need the extra exp hah.

Who knows where this girl will end up. It's the Warhammer world after all. Where I her, I wouldn't have gotten on that flying machine, I would've just chilled in beautiful Tilea, overseeing my salty bacon empire and raised a huge family to become a dynasty.

Question: were the riding horses, thus implied, free? Or do we have to pay for them?

Hmmmm *thinking cap on*.

Riding Horses and their riding kit are about 90gc.

...would it be possible to reduce that price from a Bretonnian Warhorse? So 660gc?

...given how prodigiously amazing these horses are, Taalia would get a stallion and charge ludicrous amounts of money to stud him in the Empire?

*takes ur thinking cap off*

listen here u lil shirt

But nah, this is more of a "please, take some of the horses that are mine to give" and less of a "Please have these fungible horse vouchers" situation. Also it's illegal throughout the land to sell ungelded destriers. Bretonnians are somewhat protective of their big horsies.

Heh horse vouchers. Very well, no Bretonnian Warhorse breeding program today.

Oh and, for clarity, since the charcoal burners are keeping back from the hole fearing the ground around it will collapse... is Taalia getting roped up before she goes and yells down the hole? Or is she just sneaking up and trusting her instincts to warn her if the ground is going to give way?

With a roll that good... You have no substantial reason to believe it is a trap. :)

War of the Beard? Surely you mean the War of Vengeance!

You can’t really, say, take one of the big quartz lighting stones or anything; but you could definitely take a shard of stone from the collapsed roof. Hopefully a sufficiently canny dwarf will know the difference qualities from stone in different parts of the world, and such.

Transplanting this message over here, to the OOC thread, where it belongs:

*Summoned by email alert*

Interesting, an ancient Dwarven tunnel since before the War of the Beard? That's some time to have passed! Here I was thinking with your mention of mail armor, that some new little surprise beastie was lurking down here that the boy had noticed and was hiding from.

Are there any archaeological evidences available to be taken for proof of the tunnels existence? Like special rocks, metals etc.
