Rod of defiance clarification

I have a question regarding the way Rod of defiance interacts with turn undead.
The description of the item in MiC states "for the purpose of turn or rebuke undead checks" and for some reason i had in mind its for turning check and damage (reading through the forum here lead me to this assumption, including my own thread for a cleric few weeks ago).

So, the question is, does it work for turning dmg or only for the check?

As far as I can see, it only says checks so it only works for checks.
