Akumu Sasaki

https://i.imgur.com/5G8IVJF.png Currently no hero name.

https://i.imgur.com/b1b2bfO.png

https://i.imgur.com/FmTRcGN.jpg

Nationality: Japanese
Age: 15
Height: 5' 0"
Weight: weightless (was about 100 lb prior)

At first she appears to be a very out of place Asian girl. Maybe some kind of cosplayer? Her hair is extremely long and black and straight, but usually disheveled in appearance and appears to float as in zero gravity. Upon her body are just some simple white ceremonial robes, in the style of a kimono. The fabric also seems to slowly flow in place by itself. There doesn't appear to be anything else on her person, from tattoos, to jewelry, accessories, or shoes.

The most daunting, or noticeable feature, aside from her garb and look in general, is the fact that she is translucent. She is ghostly, almost like a hologram, but her movements seem all too natural, all too alive and real. Ghost is the key word here. Thinking back to the horror genre of movies, she bears a striking resemblance to many of the vengeful spirits on film, from dead wet girls crawling out of wells, to White Ladies who haunt seldom-traveled highways and abandoned homes.

Though.. in all honesty, Akumu does not appear very vengeful - perhaps more dejected than anything. She is often quiet, and her gentle eyes speak volumes of longing and thoughtfulness. Though she may look scary, she is actually quite rational, perfectly able to carry on a conversation; she is not violent and it is believed she isn't even capable of harming anyone - at least not for now.

Akumu lived in a tiny and remote village in the mountains of Japan, which followed traditional ways and practiced the Shinto religion. The name of this village is now classified, the village is in ruins, and it is now cordoned off by government officials.

The name Akumu was superstitiously thought to be cursed, however it was given to her all the same with her mother's frequent nightmares leading up to her birth, and the difficulty in labor. It still was a beautiful and unique name bestowed upon her, given the signs. In Akumu's village, she lived a fairly 'normal' life (normal by her standards) oblivious to the outside world. Sometimes the odd traveler would stumble upon their little village, and be none the wiser. Her family, friends, and neighbors would be very patient, gracious, and courteous, answering questions and offering hospitality. Nearly all would think they were simply some touristy attraction and soon enough be on their way, having paid large sums of money for food, lodging, some handcrafted item or whatnot. That currency would simply be discarded or stored someplace. None of the visitors knew that they safeguarded an important and powerful relic: not even Akumu.

This was a secret she was just about to learn of. Hints were dropped recently, every now and then. The shrine was important and must be well-tended, watched over, and if the time ever came, defended. But before she ever did learn those secrets, some men came in the dead of night and began to lay waste to the village. With the alarm sounded, Akumu did as she was told, running to their shrine and locking herself in the vault with their sacred relic. But the sounds of yelling and fighting eventually ceased, and the men soon breached the sanctuary.

Triumphantly, the evil man sneered.. a face she will never forget, and yet belonging to a name she had never been told. There were too many of them, and she stood no chance. They pinned Akumu down and forced her to imbibe a strange and vile substance.

"Finally, the victory is ours. Now you shall feel the anguish my ancestors have suffered, Last of the Amaterasu."

Akumu felt utterly sickened and began to convulse. She could not even attempt to trigger her gag reflex as she was pinned down. She eventually blacked out.

About a day later, Akumu was found in a catatonic state. Government officials had responded to a fire that had engulfed the entire village and its shrine. The fire had spread and the smoke could be seen from miles away. Originally, rescuers thought she was a corpse, or upon further examination, some kind of dormant hologram. However, she eventually awakened and was extremely confused. She was alive, in a sense, though her body was completely incorporeal. All her possessions and clothing had piled to the ground and suffered burns and charring from the fire. And Akumu found that she was completely unable to interact with any physical objects, but very worryingly, she had begun to feel hunger and thirst.

That fateful night was when her entire life had changed, and now she needed a new life if she was to survive.

Simply put, aside from Akumu's "powers" she is extremely "special needs" - so much so that only the best technology and the best school in the world can help her. Since Akumu is unable to interact with physical objects, she is in danger of starvation and dehydration because somehow, she still also has a body with a metabolism; it is just incorporeal. She wasn't even able to do something as simple as wear clothes until recently. With some advanced technology or magic R&D, her homespun threads have been transferred (or enchanted, I don't know) to the ethereal plane, or the ghost realm, or whatever scientists refer to it as these days. The same has been done with food, too. However, getting objects back from there, let alone people, seems to be impossible as of yet.

Motivations: Doing Good - Akumu's upbringing was strict in a way, but also pure. Doing good is the only decent course of action, in her opinion.

Motivations: UNacceptance - Akumu feels like a fish out of water. She doesn't think she likes this new country and its culture. She understands so little, and she feels like she doesn't want to. Whatever vestiges of her old life she can manage to keep, she clings onto like a shipwrecked survivor clinging to debris. She is quite shy, unsociable, doing poorly in her studies, and prefers anything with a semblance to her old culture compared to anything else. Deep down she knows she should be more grateful for the help she has received, but maybe she just isn't over the tragedy she lived through yet.

Disability: Intangible - Everything is so close and yet so far away. Akumu seems to have a perfectly healthy and capable body, and yet, can't seem to do anything useful with it. The predicament is a strength and a blessing from one very optimistic point of view, but also a weakness and a curse.

Enemy: The Unknown - Whoever destroyed Akumu's village and killed everyone is still out there. They have acquired what they sought out too - and not just vengeance. Whoever this group is, they most likely expected Akumu to suffer a slow and painful death, or at least not get nearly as much help as she is receiving. There is no telling what they will do when or if they discover her whereabouts.

Quirk: Culture Clash - Akumu's first language is Japanese, and her second is English. It was never really that good to begin with, and she had mainly picked it up from the random travelers that came across her village or a very bare minimum education just as a formality. So she is likely to have misunderstandings. Also, anything modern, from pop culture or technology, she is most likely to be clueless about. Not only was she from a different country, but practically living in a different time period as well.

Honor: Code of Conduct - Akumu has a code of conduct which isn't anything like some warrior's code, but simply how to act and treat others. There are basic things like "respect your elders", forbidding stealing, maintaining purity of mind and body, and having a respect for life, nature, and craftsmanship. The most impactful code she follows is to always be truthful. While she can simply not say anything instead of revealing something important, often times the silence alone can be damning.

The toughness of Akumu's body seems linked to her force of will. However the simple fact is that objects in the physical world - cursed or not - still have difficulty interacting with and damaging her form. Creatures and objects which are also incorporeal are a different story, however. As they are on the same plane of existence, Akumu has no special defense against such attacks. For all intents and purposes, she is just a normal girl.

Note: pretty much all the powers here (except visual and hearing concealment) are innate. This is simply to drive home the fact that she is irreversibly stuck as a ghost, and the innate abilities that come with that existence shouldn't be unreasonable.

Serena Williams (No Relation)
Character Sheet (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheets/?id=2825867)
Alias: Serendipity
Text Color: Bold Blue
Tentative Concept: "I'm where I need to be, always."
Theme: Refugee from a darker world, discovering hope and honestly loving it.

Serena was all set to go to school, she swore. Sure, [school name redacted] junior college was basically a nightmare of pretentiousness and student politics, especially after The Incident, but she was pretty sure her Aunt and Uncle had told her that socializing was extremely important after she moved in with them, and anyway, it made them happy. At least [other, worse school in which she attended high school] had been leveled by that hero fight the other week and she didn't have to go there.

She'd been sneaking out for months since The Incident, when she'd first got her powers. Her Aunt and Uncle didn't know. Somehow, she always ended up where she needed to be to make a small difference, and that was what mattered to her. At least she'd been able to talk them into letting her do martial arts classes instead of school PE. Her technique could still use a lot of work, but apparently perfect timing made a difference in a fight. Who knew?

She checked her backpack for the essentials: Physics textbook, water bottle, phone... mask and costume, buried deep at the bottom, just in case. "It's just college, Serena. What's the worst that could happen?" And then somehow, the school quad she walked into was not the same as the gates she'd entered a moment before. Young people were exercising in costumes. Others were reading books on power theory and hero law. The date on the school sign -- and what kind of name was Emperor Norton University, anyway? -- read 2023, years into her future, and the air didn't feel like the East Coast autumn, either. She breathed out, deeply.

"OK, Serendipity," she murmured. "I guess you're where you need to be."

Motivation: Acceptance, Doing Good, Responsibility

Honor: Owen had a hero’s code ingrained in him since a very early age - however it was one that his father insists doesn’t make allowances for powers like his. So Owen is still working on navigating what he’s been taught and what he can do

Relationships: Estranged Family of Heroes, Friends when he gets some.

Secret: That he is related to the legendary hero Exemplar.
Identity: Owen has a twofold identity crisis - he doesn’t want villains to know his identity as many heroes seek to protect themselves s as their loved ones, but he also doesn’t want his friends to know who he is really.

Background: Exemplar. The name is well known across the states and even beyond. The paragon who has been defending the weak and enforcing justice and the American way since the dawning of the 20th Century. (Think Captain America with Bruce Wayne’s Resources) pWhat is unknown to the public is that there are actually four men that have worn the Exemplar mantle, which has been passed down from father to son for generations. The “retired” Exemplars though are not far from their prime and occasionally don the suit again to assist when the current Exemplar is handling a larger crisis. As a result there have been increasingly interesting conspiracy theories stemming out of claims that Exemplar has been seen in multiple places at the same time. The general public though accepts that he is so incredibly fast that he simple stopped both of those crimes on opposite sides of the county at nearly the same time.

Unfortunately for Owen, first born son of the current Exemplar, there was a little hiccup. Owen didn’t inherit the family powers. That wasn’t known for several years though. His early childhood was idyllic being raised to be the next savior of the world by a host of gods. When he was five the training started, badly. Then went down hill from there. Owen simply didn’t have the natural physical gifts that his father, grandfather, and the rest had. At first, his fathers solution was to push Owen harder.

The result was that his telepathic abilities blossomed and initially his father started to think things were turning around. Eventually though his father realized there was a big difference between how Owen performed against the trainers versus how he performed or rather failed to perform against the drones. When his father figured out how Owen was handling the trainers he went ballistic. Manipulating the minds of others wasnÂ’t something heroes did.

The years that followed became increasing difficult for Owen. He fought hard to focus his exceptional mental powers into a manifestation he hoped would make his father reconsider. It went on futilely for a while until at last his younger brother Oliver, started training as the next Exemplar. The last thing his father ever told Owen was that he was forbidden from using his abilities. Owen was shipped off to a boarding school in an attempt to forgot him. Eventually though something would go wrong and Owen’s mother would have to pull him out of a school and Owen would be sent to another school, sometimes money exchanged hands. Until this most recent move. Somehow, Owen was sent to Norton’s University even though he hadn’t done anything wrong. He suspects someone other than his parents stepped in to try to get him trained without his parent’s knowledge.

Owen is estranged from his family. However, he has a trust that was established when he was very small and he occasionally has interactions related to that with lawyers and accountants related to his family. Further, Hawthorne Industries, a collection of businesses and corporations across a myriad of industries and the parent company that manages them all at least on paper do not acknowledge that estrangement. Owen has a large portfolio that has been managed for him but occasionally requires his signature now that he is an adult.

Milo spent much of his childhood in the gymnasium, training as a gymnast. He was quite gifted and was on his way to competing in national meets that might’ve one day led to the Olympics if he was extremely lucky and managed to stay healthy. Unfortunately, between school and the gym, Milo didn’t really have much of a social life. There would be time for that later.

Milo gained his powers just a few months ago. He was with his parents at the city bank when a costumed villain named Techbane and his henchman stormed in. Superheroes arrived soon after to stop the heist. Techbane however had planned for this and built a teleportation device for his escape plan. Unfortunately for the villain, and many of the hostages, the device exploded shortly after being activated. It was struck by a deflected cosmic blast hurled by the superhero, Soulstar.

The myriad of exotic energies released caused a number of strange effects on the area. Milo was one of the survivors, his mother was not. His family was crushed by falling debris as part of the ceiling fell in as strange energies washed over the scene and numerous tears opened and closed randomly. Milo was transported to the edge of space and transformed. He briefly had a sight of the world for far above before another tear brought him back inside the bank.

He woke up later in a hospital bed. Milo and his father were approached in the hospital by a member of the Norton University admissions staff. As part of the settlement with the city, one that Milo and his father didn’t know about, Milo was provided with a full scholarship.

Description

Elliot is a fairly typical looking high school student, if a bit on the small side for his age. He has sandy blond hair and hazel eyes. He typically wears hand me down T-shirts and jeans. His favorite shirts are ones his older brothers got from one concert or another. Mostly because he thinks they help look cool but also because he loves what he calls classic music.

Quarry is a massive figure of dark stone standing just under 8 feet tall and over 4 feet wide. His skin appears as worn stone reflecting those of the Henge when he was originally granted his powers.

Background

Elliot was on a family vacation in England. He and his family were part of a tour group visiting Stonehenge when a thunderstorm quickly rolled in. Elliot had been off running around the fields when the tour guides were calling for everyone to return to the buses to wait out the storm. By the time he realized what was happening he was running through the monument as lightning crashed down around him. Just before he exited the ring of largest stones a bolt of lightning striking one of the stones arced out connecting to Elliot. He became infused with ancient fey energies that the stones had collected and stored over millennia transforming him into a stone elemental embodying the stones themselves.

Complications

Motivation: Doing Good, Thrills
Prejudice: Teenager
Accident: Quarry is big, heavy and strong and sometimes things get broken.
Honor: Elliot has been infused with ancient magics and fragments of old spirits that carry with them echos of an old code that he feels compelled to uphold sometimes even when he’s not transformed
Secret Identity
Relationships: Family (mom, dad, three brothers)
Responsibilities: School

"What are you lookin' at?"

https://i.postimg.cc/VLFmhk13/clad3.jpg

History:
When parents tell their kids about how their bodies will be going through some changes, they rarely include the possibility of face tentacles. Of course, that part was less pubertal development and more pubertal stupidity.

Nathan Nixon's life had been rather ordinary up to that point. An average child to average parents turned average student at an average school, with an average amount of other average friends. As many others like him, Nathan despised the averageness of it all and wanted to be – to feel – special. But where most others turn to outrageous fashion, underage drinking and perhaps a piercing or inappropriate romance, Nathan turned to black magic.

With a far too helpful school librarian, Nathan managed to get his hands on an actual scroll describing a magical ritual said to give great power to the person who used it, and (sort of) translated the instructions. He's still unsure about whether he screwed the ritual up somehow or if the creator just had a very specific idea of great power, but the end result was waking up in his parents' basement half-transformed into some sort of octopus-esque abomination, with tentacles where his left arm and lower face used to be. At long last, he had left "average" behind.

Under the circumstances, Nathan's parents were somewhat understanding, but they strongly suggested that because of The Situation, a change of scenery might be for the best. Norton University might not have been Nathan's or his parents' first choice but in the wake of his basement metamorphosis, it was starting to look like their only one.

Complications:
Mixed Motivations: There are several reasons behind Nathan’s descent into superheroics. Part of it is the same desire to feel special that fueled his interest in black magic, part of it is some actual heroism beneath layers of grumpy cynicism and part of it is a lack of other options – the practical uses for sucking the life out of people with tentacles are fairly few.

Teenage Douchebag: Nathan Nixon is very much the archetypal grumpy teenager, communicating mainly in cynical comments and sarcastic quips. It would be easy to blame it on his transformation, but the truth is that his personality changed surprisingly little after growing tentacles. Although not quite incapable of being nice, or even caring, Nathan is rather unwilling most of the time to the point that he can't always tone down the grumpiness even when he wants to.

Face Full Of Tentacles: With tentacles replacing his left arm and parts of his face, Nathan doesn't exactly fit in and while looking like something out of literal nightmares can be useful to a superhero, it's less so for a teenage boy, not to mention it makes any sort of secret identity impossible. Though if given the choice to go back, Nathan would probably pick powers over appearance, but it still bothers him more than he usually lets on.

Haven't yet gotten a response from dreamking, so lets just continue for now. You may move about the cabin freely. Work on your stuff the rest of the week.

As an exercise in some world building, what A-lister superhero do each of your characters admire greatly? In a sentence or two (SHORT), what is that A-lister's deal? What did they do recently that either disillusioned you a bit about their greatness, or reinforced your fawning over them?

I guess you're asking that question through the perspective of our characters? Probably doesn't apply to Akumu at the moment, but I could still make up a superhero.

I have some ideas for someone Nathan can admire (in secret, of course, he's way too grumpy and cool to openly admire someone). It'll probably be some sort mashup of doctors Strange and Fate. Maybe a sorceress in magic armor? Something like that (Probably. Unless I get some totally different idea. :smalltongue: ).

I still need to finalize a couple of points in his mechanics but his background fits very well with your question, DuReign so I posted it above now.

One of my other M&M characters might work for this nicely, though she might need some adjustments to fit this setting. Sorry that this is more then a few sentences.

After an earthquake Shadow-Fox saved hundreds of people by teleporting an entire train out of a collapsing subway tunnel into the Spirit Realm then into a stadium where then could safely disembark.

A ~2500 year old immortal Zenko Amatsu-Kami (benevolent fox spirit)
Modern Name: Yume Tsukiyomi
Secret True Name: 月光の夢を歩く影の善狐 (Approximate Translation: Benevolent Fox Spirit of Shadows who walks through Moonlit Dreams)

To some people of Earth, predominantly in Japan, she is considered a god. She has traveled around the Earth, and a few other locations outside of Earth’s solar system, many times throughout the years and witnessed much. The construction of the Great wall of China, fall of Roman Empire, and too many wars.

During the age of Vikings Yume was visiting northern Europe and happened upon the local hero Beowulf. Unfortunately after dropping the cowl of her cloak she was branded as a being not of Midgard due to her appearance, which was technically true, and a fight immediately broke out. After some bloodshed and much destroyed furniture the disagreement was finally settled and there was much rejoicing.

In the 14th century she founded the first Ninja clan in Japan teaching them several techniques that became the foundation of ninjutsu. Unfortunately what started with the noblest of intentions ended up changing into something else after she left them unattended for a few generations. Maybe encouraging them to be so secretive that they do not write down their own rules and history was a bad idea.

Towards the end of the 1800s Coyote the trickster tapped Yume in a magical gourd and dumped it on an uninhabited island in the south China sea. In the early 2000s she was accidentally released from the gourd by a shipwreck survivor. She proceeded to carry him back to civilization, which just so happened to not be what the guy demanded as a first wish for releasing her.

In her humanoid form Yume appears to be of Japanese descent with silvery white hair that is almost pearlescent, large fox ears, and big fluffy tail. She stands about 5 feet tall at the tips of her ears and while she looks like an 18-20 year old human, her violet eyes show a weight of years that many find disconcerting.

Shadow Fox is very cool! I could see Akumu and her village considering her as a god.

I'll try my hand at something, trying to follow DuReign's instructions.

Bladestorm

A paragon of superhuman speed, strength, and regeneration. Being of Japanese-American descent, his MO is of wielding Daishō (essentially a long sword and short sword) and quartering enemies before they even blink. He also wears what appears to be traditional Samurai armor, fitting the theme.

At first Akumu was enthralled by this superhero upon learning about him. But as she discovered more, she realized that they had very little in common. They did not share the same beliefs, of religion, culture, or honor.. he barely even spoke Japanese himself! But when she witnessed Bladestorm dismembering fleeing villains after their Death Ray exploded, Akumu completely lost interest, thinking this "hero" to be far too bloodthirsty.

Depending on how long it's been since the opening exam, Serena hasn't really become too familiar with this world's heroes yet. But if she has, she probably adores Nick o'Time, who has a time dilation power but is otherwise a squishy normal (and whose theme is not too too different from her own). Nick dresses like Eliot Ness, bowler hat and all (the suit is kevlar-weave and quite bullet resistant) and fights with escrima sticks, when he fights at all. He holds a private investigator's license and spent 10 years as a journalist before he got his powers, so he's kind of her poster child for "doing the work and not relying on powers" for her. Nick's favorite villains to capture are corrupt hedge fund managers. I wonder why?

Edit: DuReign, is it all right if I PM you with a question?

Alright, let's see...

As a teenager during the 1970s, Charlotte Kenzie became involved in the New Age movement but when it couldn't provide the answers she was looking for, she kept digging and eventually graduated from the spiritual to the actually magical. In 1978 she stopped a demonic invasion in the Midwest, becoming publicly known as the superhero Soothsayer. Although initially mistrusted for her use of magic as well as dressing in what appeared to be a mishmash of ancient armor and rags, she eventually grew quite popular, especially with the younger crowd.

In the late 1980s, Charlotte was one of the founding members of the Vigil, a group of mystical superheroes devoted to protecting the public from supernatural threats (often before they even arose, thanks to Charlotte's powerful precognition). Over the years members came and went, but Soothsayer remained the leader and public face of the Vigil.

A little over a year ago, a disgraced former member of the Vigil publicly claimed that Charlotte Kenzie had gained her powers by selling her soul to the Ones in Shadow, the semi-divine rulers of an alternate dimension. Initially it was considered little more than a conspiracy theory, but when asked about it during a press conference, Charlotte created headlines around the world by confirming it, seemingly relieved after keeping it secret for decades. If that wasn't enough, she revealed that her public appearance – that of a quite ordinary woman in her 60s – was nothing but an illusion to hide that she had been turning increasingly ichthyic in appearance.

Since that day, Soothsayer – as well as the rest of the now mistrusted Vigil – only appear when necessary to combat supernatural threats, with even their previously quite public headquarters simply having vanished.

That ended up a bit longer than intended, I got a little carried away. I might actually create Charlotte as a proper character, just for fun. Oh, and in case it's not apparent from Charlotte's secret look, the idea is that the Ones in Shadow are somehow related to Nathan's transformation as well.

Sorry for the lack of update, we've been getting a stint of wildfire smoke here in the PNW and I kind of stupidly thought I could handle it. After a couple days of outdoor exposure I just got really fatigued, some mild headache, and slept most of yesterday. I'm feeling much better now (though we are still kinda smokey here) but I'll be staying indoors and catching up with what is going on.

I've had flooding here, which put a pause on my efforts.

A Hero Adora and Acreda admire: Martian Manhunter. It's trite, but they identify with him as a fellow immigrant from another world who has abilities that seem wondrous only in the context of normal Humans. Also, despite this, he does not rest on his laurels like a Booster Gold, but tries to improve himself and use his mind as best he is able.

The Doppelgangers-

They are a Clan (maybe 200 individuals) that were pressganged by an event level magic-Themed baddie. Let's call him "The Shaed"

They betrayed Shaed in exchanged for amnesty and Refugee stated. They have a weakness to mirrors. Their powers are duplication and mimicry.

This was the origin of Adora and Acreda in the last game that died too soon...

Let me know. My house was flooded our, so I'm only know finding the time to put this all down.

I'm also here. I should get around to that self-imposed world-building exercise and write a villain. I'm thinking some sort of witch hunter type that's trying to kill magic users, but is secretly empowered by the Ones in Shadow (Yes, I'm going for kind of a theme here, I suppose. :smallwink: ).

We are waiting for the GM to recover and come back.

Everything we know is in the recruitment thread (https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?658497-M-amp-M-Hero-High-or-Something) and this thread so put together a character and hope that this game doesn't die before it starts.
