In the game i am playing, we have very little downtime because all leveling is done through actual training, measured in weeks, once you meet the XP requirements. That being said, I am looking at creating an artificer cohort at Level 6. All Cohort Levels are maxed out at 2 levels less than yours.

Are there any ways to increase artificer levels for crafting purpouses?

Thanks.

If your campaign will take you to higher levels, a dwarf artificer can enter battlesmith when leveling to 8.

Secrets of the Forge (Ex): A battlesmith learns some of the great dwarven secrets of forging weapons and armor. A battlesmith receives Craft Magic Arms and Armor as a bonus feat, regardless of her caster level. Multiply the battle smith's class level by 3 to determine her effective caster level for the purpose of creating magic arms and armor (this benefit stacks with any other caster levels the battlesmith might have).

A dwarf artificer 7 / battlesmith 1 would be treated as a 12th-level caster for meeting item prerequisites with craft magic arms and armor.

This does require you to dedicate all 3 of your feats to get heavy armor proficiency, endurance, and weapon focus though, and it doesn't help with any other kind of item.

If the option is permitted by the DM, the Improved Cohort feat allows the Cohort to be at Level -1 instead of Level -2... however not everyone likes burning a feat just for that.
