View Full Version : Sooo are we going to talk about Roys eyes?

Sooo I can't fail to notice that every character has different size eyes. The further from the "camera" is smaller rounder, while the closer one is higher and more eliptoid or "stretched" verticaly. This applies I think for everyone EXCEPT Roy (aaand I noticed a random kilt wearing dwarf in Hel Polls for Thee strip) Roy has the opposite setup of eyes. The closer to camera is rounder and the further one is the squeezed one.

Any ideas why?

And just like that, I will forever be unable to ignore this fact. Outstanding.

I came here expecting a totally different discussion. I'll show myself out, now.

For DahrAmahr: nice call out.

Holy crap, this isn't a new development either.

clear face zoom in when Roy gets his sword back. (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1078.html)

Huh. In the beginning (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html), they were like everyone else's! Whatever happened?!

It began in here (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0112.html) when Rich accidentally started drawing him backwards (also check out his shoulder pad and boots) and then it stuck.

But look at the last panel in this strip:
Roy standing by everyone else after Elan detonates Dorukan's Gate (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0118.html)His eyes match everyone else's, even though they're reversed in the penultimate panel.

All I've ever noticed about Roy's eyes are how dreamy they are.

We will find out before the end of the series, that right there, between panels 10 and 11, is when Roy was replaced by a Space Phantom duplicate. Or perhaps a Dire Wraith. Or his Mirror Universe double. One of those.

It would be appropriate if Julia was drawn the same way, if for no other reason due to Durkon's comment on the 5th panel of this page (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0353.html).

I think Thog is the same.

New crack theory: the Order is being followed around by an incredibly stealthy Mirror Mephit. The Roy we know is several Simulacra.

Didn't it begin with "I can never remember which foot the big boot goes on," joke.

Eugene has the same trait. Must be genetic.

Eugene has normal eyes here though. (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1276.html) also here (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots1046.html).

Eric has the reversed eyes though (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0496.html), along with Horace (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0498.html).

The change in his eyes represents Eugene's recently growing alienation from his son.

I was going to postulate that it meant that one of Roy's eyebrows was always slightly raised in disbelief, but this latest development sort of nixes that idea.

Of course. Once you know Vaarsuvius's gender, figure out what species the MitD is, and understand why Elan's plan needed a giant wooden alpaca stuffed with potato salad, it's obvious that Roy's eyes have to be like that.

Heh, the giant wooden alpaca stuffed with potato salad seemed Nale-esque at the time, which fit the theme of Thog and Not-Nale (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0389.html) in progress.

This is the real answer of course.

But I like to think that Roy has some kind of (benign) anisocoria (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anisocoria).

I noticed this in 2010 thanks to this old thread (https://forums.giantitp.com/showthread.php?144364-Roy-s-Eyes-are-Wonky) where his eyes are described as "wonky". That adjective has stuck in my memory as the description :smalltongue:

Some minor characters have had similar eyes, like these guys in Azure City (https://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0440.html), but I don't think there's ever been an explanation. Seems like it's just a rare cosmetic difference some characters have.

Same body type.
