View Full Version : What character would you build based on these Magic Cards?

I am trying out a new way of getting inspiration for a new character for 5e by picking at random 5 Magic: The Gathering cards from the online Gatherer (https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?action=random) at wizards.com.

The 5 cards I picked are:

https://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=433219&type=card

https://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=616920&type=card

https://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=373532&type=card

https://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=583602&type=card

https://gatherer.wizards.com/Handlers/Image.ashx?multiverseid=407644&type=card

Based on those 5 cards what would you create?*

I am thinking at the moment of a dark elf battlemaster / (glory?) paladin who has been brought up in a wood elf community with the soldier background who is haunted by the death of a loved one and literally wants to travel to hell and back to bring them back to life (and they have the inspiring leader feat).

*) Or alternatively: Pick 5 cards at random (https://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?action=random) and tell us what you would do with those! ;-)

Honestly? This just makes me think of a "keep powering summoned creatures" class. Shepherd Druid.

Your idea is better. Looks like an interesting challenge to get try myself.

I would go for a Wood Elf Undead Warlock with the Soldier background, with some group-helping features (ex: Inspiring Leader, or just using their Fear powers to benefit as manyin the group as possible ). They fought a battle in a swamp, died, then woke up. Everyone tought they just survived the battle, but between that distinct memory of death and their new magic powers, the Wood Elf soldier knows something happened.

Haunt= the character's mentor
Tranquil Glade= where the character was buried
Military Discipline= characters background: Probably Paladin or Battle Master
Rescue from Underworld= the character died and was beyond resurrection magic to restore. So their mentor travelled into the afterlife to save them, made a deal to take the character's place.
Lead by Example= the first and foremost teaching of the mentor was always a general should never send his soldiers into a situation they'd never go personally. By sacrificing their own life to restore a lowly student they proved this, as they felt personally responsible for their demise.

Leaving it open for details. Hope you like.

Wood elf (or Satyr, or Firbolg, woodland crature in any case) for the first card; phantom rogue (the two black cards); with soldier background (white card) and inspiring leader feat + relative high cha score + expertise in persuasion (last card).

Yeah, I like it. One could probably refine the approach a bit, like draw 7 non-basic-land cards, keep 5, or something like that!

Oh I like this idea, maybe I can combine this with the idea of actually travelling into the underworld!

Yes, and I think it would be great hook for a character who is desperately tries to prove themselves to be worthy of that sacrifice!

Oh, phantom rogue would fit quite nicely! Good idea!

And if anyone else wants to try this, here are five more cards if you want to try something else

Tranquil Thicket: A Druid's grove

Haunt of the Dead Marshes: A slightly creepy Druid's Grove, perhaps a graveyard in the middle? I'd say this has the markings of a Spore Druid

Rescue from the Underworld: We were dead once, time to pull out the Reborn from Ravenloft

Military Discipline: Soldier Background

Lead by Example: Had a decent rank, probably an Officer of some kind. Has higher than average Charisma, potentially the Inspiring Leader feat.

Put it all together and we get:

Isaac Dustsword

Class: Spore Druid

Abilities: 8/14/16/8/16/12

Feats: Inspiring Leader, Pole Arm Mastery

Background: Isaac was a soldier back before he became a Reborn, and had quickly raised through the ranks. He lead his men through example, always being at the front of the charge, and the last man to retreat. He eventually fell in a battle against an Orc hoard, in some marshes. These Marshes were full of some special fungus, which infested Isaac and raised him from the dead. But instead of being a mindless zombie, Isaac remembered bits and parts of his past. He now cares for the marsh, and the spirits resting there, turning it from a place of death and decay. to a peaceful place of beauty with his tireless efforts.

Background could probably be fleshed out more, knocked it out in about 3 or 4 minutes.

I'd probably scope out or reselect any land cards.

Haunt = Reborn Elf Paladin (Oathbreaker or Vengeance probably.)
Military Discipline = Human Battlemaster Fighter
Lead by Example = Ancients Paladin or Monster Slayer Ranger
Inescapable Blaze = Evoker Wizard or Wild Magic Sorc
Full Flowering = Shepherd or Dreams Druid
Huntmaster = Beastmaster Ranger
Golden Tail Disciple = Changeling Mercy Monk, refluffed as Kitsune
Urza = Human Artificer 20 (or Artificer/Wizard) with some epic boons.

First card set, Reborn Ancients paladin with the soldier background.

For the second, Wildfire Druid noble, i feel like the kisune is best fit as species but I think for 5e that is custom lineage, or maybe reflavor tabaxi.

I have done some of this before, I have a couple characters now that I tried to fit a color identity and choose their spells accordingly. Rakdos warlock bard for a Ravnica game and a wizard for a homebrew setting with a theme is blue.

I also have a bucket list to play a character I based on goblin guide.

Oh I like both! Together with Psyren's idea to refluff the Changeling as Kitsune, the second one could be something very fun - although, maybe Izzet could work for Urza? So an Izzet Changeling (Kitsune) Wildfire Druid?

I went with noble for that, since the trait Urza has that works with the rest is prince.
