Other than by turning it into an item familiar, what other ways are there to turn a wizard's spellbook into a sentient being?

Also, what ways are there to make a wizard's spellbook more magical besides the fact that it contains magic?

There's a section in Complete Arcane about spellbooks, p.139-141, you might find some useful stuff there.

I'm pretty sure you can craft a Boccob's Blessed Book as an intelligent item.

If I ever play a gestalt of Psion with Wizard or Archivist, I'm going to ask my DM about using an Aureon's Spellshard as my psicrystal. Not RAW, but it would be cool.

There are rules for tattooed spellbooks, I suppose you could tattoo your spellbook on someone else? :smallconfused:

Good point, I don't see any reason why not.

Does anyone remember Chorlton and the Wheelies?

I'm pretty sure you can craft a Boccob's Blessed Book as an intelligent item.

I wonder if you could do the same with the various spellshards from the Eberron setting/books.

I've never created an intelligent item before? Where do I find how to do this / how much it costs? Are there rules on this?

It's in the DMG p.268-272, or in the SRD here: https://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/intelligentItems.htm

the SRD has information on making intelligent items (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/intelligentItems.htm) inside of the magic items group.

Again I don't see why not, the only restriction is that it must be permanent item, so no scrolls, wands etc.

Could the Minor Servitor spell work?

I had a lich enchant an extra big fancy spellbook with uncopyable custom spells in it. Turned it into the soul bottle thingy and hid a lightly enchanted traditional one in a secret room with a trap. Figured anyone that'd gank it would find the fake and keep his spellbook, because only another wizard could ever kill a lich.

Of course then we had a party of semi-literate fighters, fighty clerics, and an actually illiterate sorcerer. Never found the secret room, burned the spellbook out of spite. Absolutely classic.

If you are up for a little edition-conversion homebrewing ... take a look at the 5e subclass for Wizards called 'Order of the Scribes'.

http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/wizard:order-of-scribes

You'll see that this is exactly the kind of thing you're looking for in a thematically-living spellbook. If you Google 'Order of the Scribes', you'll see there's also handbooks and guides on how to optimize using this upper-tier subclass within 5e play. Eventually, I'm going to convert this subclass to 3.5 and PF1 myself as I feel there's a niche that needs to be filled in both of these play systems.

Step 1: Get an Aureon's Spell-shard (it's a Siberys Dragonshard, which is a form of gem, that contains spells like a spellbook) if in Eberron or a (Tel') kiira in FR (which is the same with some extra SLAs).
Step 2: Find a creature with a personality you'd like your spellbook to have
Step 3: Cast Nybor's Psychic Imprint (http://web.archive.org/web/20150626181801/http://archive.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mb/20041215a#:~:text=Nybor%27s%20Psychic%20Imprint%0A Transmutation,focus%20for%20this%20spell.) on the creature, using the gem as a component.

…and *ding* you got it.

Savage Species has Minor Servitor spell - it allowed to turn inanimate object into intelligent Animated Object permanently

Cursed Items (https://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/cursedItems.htm) rules: Arms and Equipment Guide has for it the "Possessed" option...

Alas, the MIC officially updated that spell to the inferior Awaken Construct.

You mean - Spell Compendium?
I know - but it's stupid: those two spells have almost nothing in common (if one grants intelligence to existing Humanoid-shaped Construct - other creates already intelligent Construct)
Also, with Minor Servitor out of the picture - it's completely impossible to make Disney-style intelligent objects (since Animated Objects are specifically excluded from suitable targets for Awaken Construct, and many of them aren't Humanoid-shaped anyway)

I'm suggesting to pretend this "official" update don't exist

You might be able to do the following. Cast animate objects on a carpet (for example) then permanency, then since the carpet is both an object and a creature (as per construct) enchant it as a flying carpet. Same logic for others.

Am I missing something here?

Well, firstly: it, actually, wouldn't make the carpet intelligent (unless you mean - to use Intelligent Item rules - which was already suggested). And unclear if it even would be able to activate itself
Secondly: to cast 6th-level spell, use a feat (or cast Wish), spend 3,800(+5,000) XP and 10,000 gp - just to get something which was accessible via 5th-level spell for mere 250/ft3 XP and no extra gp?

Take Ancestral Relic, your mother gave you this blank spellbook on your way out the door to wizard's school.

Take one of those feats that allow you treat anything as a weapon.

Take two levels of Anointed Knight (Book of Exalted Deeds), use the weapon oil that transforms your weapon, aka spellbook, into an intelligent item, with 14 in two mental scores, and 10 in another.

If you put a 14 in Wisdom, it's first advice to you will be, "Retrain those Anointed Knight levels!"

That's a bit too much investment for my purposes. I think at that point it might be easier to just convince the DM to allow theItem Familiarfeat if I promise not to abuse it. :smalltongue:

I remember a spell that would put a copy of a creatures mind into an object. I can look for it this weekend.
