For various reasons I'm not set up for streaming right now, but I did find several dvd by mail services that were already in existence or popped up after Netflix did away with their mail service. Unfortunately I know nothing about them, so I'm posting to see if any one here has experience with any of these, and if they aren't rip off's:

Just another resource in case you didn't think of it: your library. Sure you'll likely have to go there yourself rather than have it delivered, but it's an inexpensive source of borrowable DVDs.

And, depending on your location and situation, you might even be able to get them delivered, by some sort of Homebound program. They might also have some services (Kanopy and Hoopla being two popular ones) that might offer downloadable movies and shows, rather than streamed.

Apparently ours has Hoopla! Thanks for the replies. This may do me till I can get streaming.

Yeah, library selection can vary but you might be surprised--my local library has an incredibly robust selection of TV shows, for example, including ones from the past 15 years.

One of my best friends rents a lot from his local library, of not just DVDs but also a lot of video games.

Video games are getting harder; so many check online to see if that copy has been installed anywhere.

Really? Well in his case, it's older games like Xbox/360, Wii, PS2/3. Stuff that didn't need to be installed, necessarily.

Most new stuff is too big to even come on discs these days, in my experience. I remember buying my first Xbox One game and being surprised that I couldn't play it from the disc and had to install and download updates for six hours first. Like, what's even the point of discs at that point? And that was like 6 years ago. I assume the problem has just gotten worse since the next gen consoles came out.

Anyway, that was ancillary to the main topic of movie watching. I just thought some people may find it to be an interesting option they hadn't considered.
