Well, I was reading the recent 4th Edition news on Enworld (http://www.enworld.org/) and it turns out that the "standard" races in the player's handbook automatically come with fluff of a number of ancient fallen empires. Of course, having an ancient civilization that no longer exists is a common trope in fantasy books, but D&D will now have three by default... dragonborn, giants and tieflings all get to be ex-imperial, plus the elves have a shattered nation, and the halflings have a trade network that is also called an empire. Funny, that.
