Bit early, but it's a slow day today. Discuss the Order of the Stick in all it's awsomeness. New comic this monday.

I'm kinda worried now... I mean that looked like a high level ninja.

Winged One

Can't be that high-level, not even the reader would be able to see him then. ;D

I'm kinda worried now... I mean that looked like a high level ninja.Well I'm guessing that the kings suite is on the top floor. It was a rather tall inn. Therefore, yes, he is at a fairly high level.

PrometheusRex
2005-10-01, 03:24 AM
Well, either that's an awful awful awful pun about being "high level" just due to height above the ground, or you're wrong because being near the roof would seem to indicate less skill as a ninja because it's less distance to climb down from the roof.

Slap that dwarf for the bad pun.

Can there really be such a thing as a "bad pun" on a website that cherishes and celebrates the "Up a level/Down a level" debate?

El Jaspero, the Pirate King

Yeah, I have a feeling things are going to go badly for the OOTS team pretty soon, what with the hotel crawling with explosive-armed ninjas and all. On the good side, maybe they'll blow up Miko in the process.

He's probably an assassin who'se mission is to assassinate the King of Nowhere.

He's NOT a Ninja, he's NOT an assassin, HE'S A ROBBER!

I'm quite sure of it.

I think he's there to protect the King of Nowhere. Not a robber, nor a ninja, nor an assassin but a body guard. *gets attacked for the foolish idea*

Hey. Don't y'all know that if you want to punish me for puns, you have to toss me?

And he's going down a level. Otherwise, He'da been head pointing up, not down.

How about this one? He's not a ninja at all. He just has an ugly lower half of his face.

Guys, you're looking the wrong way.

Can't you see? It's ALL about the tag..... and grand mystery of who could have removed it.

And why everything... depends on the little white tag.

a challenge! Something about a stick up the backside being a class feature and Roy being a stick. That ought to qualify.

As far as the mattress tag goes, they didn't remove the tag, they removed the matress from the tag. That ought to be anal enough to satisfy Miko.

[add more]
Back in #224, Miko is riding behind Belkar and no detect evil. Because that wouldn't be honourable? Or is there a deeper reason?

There's only a penalty if you sleep in Medium or Heavy armor. Chain shirts, etc are okay. So only Durkon and Roy (probably) need to worry. And since Roy doesn't sleep (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript?SK=14), only Durkon suffers. ;) Maybe that's why Roy always drags Durkon (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript?SK=4) behind him when running away from danger; a character can't run while fatigued.

I note that Belkar isn't in the current strip. Is he ignoring the spa treatment, was he not invited, not seen, or is he off in the stables, preparing his revenge against Windstriker?

New strip is up. It answers the question of what Belkar is doing, too.

"Are you aware that an alarmingly high percentage of the creatures you have exposed to this radiation are now deceased?"
lol. Typical lawyer.

However, one big thing: what jurisdiction do they claim to be under? Somewhere else's? Nowhere's? etc? Or does Miko obey the laws of where she comes from, or where they are currently, or a mix of both? She attacks evil immediately (without asking for more info, like in #200 when she attacked the party), but still, the question remains: who's lawfulness is she obeying?

Oh, good lord!
I nearly hurt myself with trying not to laugh out loud (which would force me to explain myself to my co-workers)!

I always like to consider how legislature interacts with magic. It seems to me, if you had people that powerful running around, the government would want to regulate them- but how could you police spellcasters except with other spellcasters? Then you run into the kind of problems that corrupted the Psi Corps in Babylon5 (but that's a whole 'nother thread...). I love the class action suit idea. I must steal that one sometime. ;D

Belkar is too late. I have already cast "know alignment". He is Lawful Evil. Which this strip demonstrates very well.

The Vorpal Tribble

Lawful Evil? Bah, he 'only' uses the law when it suits his needs and thumbs his nose at it when it gets in his way. NE if nothing else.

GeeVee

Heeheeheeehahahahaha! This is truly the funniest OotS strip in a long time. ;D
I've actually wondered about the actual lawfulness of the Detect spells. ::)

If Belkar were lawful, he wouldn't have been able to take barbarian levels.

It's kind amusing how he keeps getting the better of Miko, but that poor girl really didn't know what she was getting into by taking the group into custody. I've got a feeling that they'll either drive her further into her uptight shell, or they'll shatter it like glass.

Although Belkar should be careful, or Miko might sic her horse on him. :)

Either way, you know it's going to be good.

"Translated into Common: Suck it!"

Oh, and the ramifications of 'civil rights' in a D&D game? Head-spinning.

I don't know how it applies to being in/out of character, but I think it's supposed to be that "wider" spoon you see in eastern restaraunts. Often white, made of a ceramic. I dunno how to describe it better, but I'm sure we've all seen it before. Again poking fun at the "where is Japan?" joke.

Just one question: Does Belkar possess the intelligence to obtain a restraining order?

Normally he just stabs his problems away.

The problem with a restraining order in a fantasy realm is that once acknowledged it tends to have magical implications at the level of a geas....

By ordering up the lawyers for frivolous lawsuits, Belkar has made any use Detect Evil entirely moot. There can be only one alignment for him! LOL. Love it.

By the way, someone should inform Belkar's counsel about a fat juicy personal injury lawsuit just waiting to be filed by some poor, hapless white jellyfish-looking things (See # s 74 & 120 for examples), oh and possibly slander as well (#55) . I'm sure any jury would take pity on them for millions of GP!

Flak_Razorwill
2005-10-03, 09:44 PM
Lawyers? NOW I know Belkar can't be good. Not even chaotic. This crosses the line.

Waitaminit...Miko has only one way out, and it's risky: Use Roy's royalty to bluff check the lawyer, resulting in a general pardon. Pray to Lord Washizu that it works.

It's not like she loses much in the way of powers. She can still use the "color coded dragon" method of evil detection. OR barring that, common sense.

EDIT: In my experiences with maritime and constitutional law (Go poli-sci major), as long as she is a valid member of law enforcement, and she has probable cause and a warrant for the apprehension of the suspects, a search is valid for illegal materials, like drugs, weapons, evil souls, etc. A counter-argument would be that he was harboring contraband. But Rich probably won't even know this post exists, so there.

Or maybe he just spotted a lawyer and came up with the idea on the spot. He certainly had enough money to do so.

One thing I find interesting is that Miko actually thought she could cast Detect Evil on Belkar after he did the casual remark -- Oops I forgot my lead sheet...

Even someone as dim as Miko the microphone should have realized that must be a trap.

Belkar's spot check may be bad...but Lawyers don't seem to be the stealthy type. In my opinion, Belkar only has trouble with EXIT signs and ninja.

Also, you are wrong sir. This hotel is in the middle of SOMEWHERE, not NOWHERE. Also, it is quite a fancy hotel and if the lawyer happened to be passing through, it seems like a quite acceptable choice even for his snobbish taste.

Wouldn't any class-action lawsuit be moot, given that Miko's victoms are, umm, dead (or destroyed, if undead/constructs/other non-living evil entities).
They can still be raised or "speak with dead"ed to.
Dead is not sure in D&D.

-Haley DOES dress skimpily. Great prostitute remark, ha ha. What IS she wearing, a leather halter top and short shorts? I've always wondered.

First off: pretty funny. Dwarven advisor, court jester, prostitute (my fav). lol

Second: I don't play D&D, but what's this "fourth wall" everybody keeps referring to? I've seen it referred to before, and I assume it has something to do with the "belief" you're actually there, and not aware of reality (or something)? What are the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, if they exist? Any more than 4?

The "fourth wall" is the wall between the characters and the audience. Originally a theater term, I believe.

The_Beast_Rabban
2005-10-05, 11:46 AM
I beleive it refers to the fact that in theatres the sets only have three walls(back and either side).

The fourth would be where the audience is so it is fictional/invisible wall which seperates characters from audience.

As others have mentioned, the fourth wall is the imaginary "wall" between the audience and the performers, originally in theatre. When actors on a tv show turn to the camera and start talking as if they were speaking directly to the viewing audience, this is known as "breaking the fourth wall".

In the case of OotS, the fourth wall is the wall between the characters as people and the characters as game characters. They are breaking the comic's "fourth wall" when they refer to game rules instead of real-life situations. When someone references their player-character class, alignment, hit points, or other things that real people don't have, that's "breaking the fourth wall" in OotS. :)

I'll bet Aaron Williams is chuffed to have 'Nodwick' mentioned! :D

Only one question - the ninja guy refers to a redhaired woman. The only person I can think of who would fit this description is Haley, but her hair doesn't look red to me. It's not just the color balance on my monitor - she doesn't look red-haired in Dungeon Crawlin' Fools either. ???

See, I don't take it that way. As I see it, in OotS-World, alignment, feats, hit points, etc. are actual things rather than the abstractions we think of them as. And it leads to weird and funny situations.

I'm not sure that they're that good alignment, the 'body count' mention probably just meant that he didn't want to waste more explosive than he needed, and they said they need to keep a low profile anyway, so it's more a pragmatic concern than anything else.

Inara, not Enara. And I think you just spoiled Serenity for me. Shame on you. Not all die-hard fans live in the US so they can watch it as soon as it hits theaters over there, you know.

As to the assassins, I think they might be lawful. In general, I'd say that that would be the bent of good assassins - not to create more carnage than neccessary, keeping to the contract they've entered into, etc. And when I say "good", I mean "competent" rather than "nice".

As someone who's played a paladin occasionally, I'm wondering why Rich portrays Miko as being so ... uncharismatic. Charisma is the defining stat for a paladin, but I've often seen them played as jerks by players who seem to feel that LG means humorless, naive and/or oppressive.

Is it

1) Because Rich doesn't care for the class? or
2) Because it's funnier that way?

Thanks for the filler, Giant! Good luck with the move, don't break anything, and buy a deadbolt for your door. Oh, and thanks for consistently putting up a great comic for all of us to enjoy. We appreciate it and you.

/agree. Personally, I think Roy enduring any more of Elan's Kazoo skills could send him over the edge. He can only make that Limits of his own Sanity check so many times...

hehe

And as for the filler, personally I think your filler comics are hilarious. You should do small ones more often when late. ;)

Am I the only one who was reading page 11 of so of this thread and was struck with a thought so utterly ridiculous that I died of a mental brain inversion?

[utterly ridiculous thought]
Point one: The only way Roy could've been mistaken for the king of Nowhere would be if he looked at least something like him, right?
Point two: Unless you're qualifying for a senor's discount, six or so years in an adult shouldn't make that much difference.
Point three: Roy WAS mistaken for the king of Nowhere.
Point four: Roy has a younger brother.
Conclusion one: Roy's brother was somehow made the king of Nowhere!
Random idea one: Roy's brother is Lord Shojo!
Random idea two: Roy's brother was adopted and he is really Miko's half-brother!
Random idea three: Roy's brother will join the Linear Guild because they Bluff him into thinking they are on a noble crusade to bump uglies.
Random idea four: Roy's brother has become a perverted ghost and after meeting up with Roy's father (who tells him where Roy is) he sneaks into Miko's and Haley's rooms at night. One or both of them see him and fall maddly in love with him.
Random idea five: Roy's brother's name is Joe!!!!!
[/utterly ridiculous thought]

Okaaaay... I'm done now.

EDIT: Here ya go Brardos. Panel seven, hiding behind the chair, is a small orange clad figure. (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript?SK=113)

I have long maintained that Miko is a low-charisma Paladin build. She basically has to be: she seems to have high DEX, reasonable STR and CON, and some WIS.

And now, a question: where is V? Will V save the day?

Comic number 113 (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript?SK=113). The 2nd flashback panel, you see Roy has a younger brother (he's peeking out from the chair). Unless it's been said somewhere else, one can admit though that it's fully possible that's his younger SISTER not brother though, as I'd say for that young, hair is indeterminate, and thus it's kind of completely open. But younger sibling for sure.

No..there is no prerequisite for minimum Charisma to get to Bump Uglie..er..Smite Evil.

Actually, having low (or even negative) Charisma bonus might be why she waited until Roy was prone (and thus easier to hit) before unleashing her Paladin Class Feature. (My point is, the extra damage from Smite Evil is Level-based, it is only the + to hit that is Cha-based)

Ah yes, no spoiler. I didn't remember that, so I thought maybe it was something found on Origin. Sorry, hoseki. I stand corrected. :P

(btw, English is not my native language, what does "the plaintiff rests" mean?)

Sc00by
2005-10-08, 07:23 AM
it's based on the common court room quote " the prosecution (or defense) rests" Meaning that they;ve presented their case and the judge/jury get to go make up their mind now.

As this isn't a court room the prosecution can't rest, but the plaintiff (the complainer in simpler english) can.

Hope that helps?

I acually meant something along the lines of, oh... there's a HUGE difference between a ten year old and a sixteen year old, an even huger difference between a newly born baby and somone celebrating their sixth birthday, but late to mid twenties with the respective parties looking slightly older or younger may have an UNNOTICEABLE difference. The defendant rests.

This is specified in On the Origin of PCs, and Rich likes to be contrary to people's expectations, so draw your conclusion there. Also, Rich really does have hair like that. It's surprisingly faithful for a stick figure conversion.

Personally, I'd much rather have you wait and get settled and have the time to really get the juices flowing, than have you try to rush out a comic whilst under the stress of unpacking from a move.

Good late comic is always superior to "timely" rushed poor comic. Just keep your loyal-slavering-bloddthirsty fans aprised.

I wonder how much of the Giant's bandwidth charges are due to people hitting the "reload" button in the hopes of catching the latest strip. We might not pay him anything to have it up on time, but I bet we cost him something when it is late.

He should probably go back to twice a week updates, though. 3 times a week doesn't seem workable.
