RC's Carrion Hill
A Lovecraftian Pathfinder 1E Adventure for Level 5 Characters

The strange city of Carrion Hill has long loomed over the surrounding swamps, yet its rulers have shifted many times through the centuries. Often enough that only a few sinister scholars and curious minds know the true nature of the hill’s original inhabitants—vile and depraved cultists of the Old Gods. Yet this morning, a dreadful recrudescence rises from the depths of buried nightmare in the vaults below Carrion Hill. A monster stalks the twisted alleys of the city, spreading panic before it and leaving destruction in its wake. Can the Carrion Hill Horror be stopped?

Update: Recruitment will close at 08:00am UTC Sunday 21st January. All applications submitted complete before then will be considered.

Update2: The submission period has now closed, thank you everyone for your applications. I am now deliberating and hope to be able to make a decision shortly.

A new year, a new resolution to DM a shortish adventure! Welcome to my Carrion Hill recruitment thread, a Lovecraftian Pathfinder 1E adventure for level 5 characters. I'm looking for 5-6 Players to come along for the ride. Big 16 as follows:

1. What game system are you running (D&D, Call of Cthulu, Palladium, GURPS, etc.), and if applicable what edition (Original, Classic, Revised, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, etc.)?
We'll be playing Pathfinder 1E. Published 3.5 material considered on a case by case basis.

2. What 'type' or variant of game will it be (i.e. "Shadow Chasers" or "Agents of Psi" for d20 Modern)? What is the setting for the game (eg. historic period, published or homebrewed campaign setting, alternate reality, modern world, etc.)?
We'll be playing the Carrion Hill published adventure for PF1E.

3. How many Players are you looking for? Will you be taking alternates, and if so, how many?
5-6

4. What's the gaming medium (OOTS, chat, e-mail etc.)?
We'll be playing on OOTS in the IC/OOC threads forums. There'll also be a Discord channel for game discussion.

5. What is the characters' starting status (i.e. experience level)?
5th level - no XP tracking, it's a single level adventure.

6. How much gold or other starting funds will the characters begin with?
Standard WBL [10500gp]

Ruling: Pre-game crafting is permitted, for your own character only, but you must roll any crafting checks and risk wasting any materials.

You may also attempt to copy spells into spellbooks from purchased scrolls and passing the materials fee. You get only one attempt to copy a spell.

You can take 10 on copying and crafting rolls if that would be a success. Rolling is for difficult, dangerous or distracted rolls. It is presumed that pre-game activities occur in ideal conditions.

Full, 1/2, or 1/4 charged wands may be purchased. No other fractional wand charges permitted.

7. Are there any particular character classes, professions, orders, etc. that you want... or do not want? What are your rules on 'prestige' and/or homebrewed classes?
As an inexperienced DM I'd like to keep things relatively simple. Please choose from the core, base, hybrid classes listed here (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/).
Edit: Unchained Rogue and unchained Monk permitted. Other unchained classes not permitted.

8. What races, subraces, species, etc. are allowed for your game? Will you allow homebrewed races or species? 'Prestige' races or species?
As above, stick to Core and Standard races listed here (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/)

9. By what method should Players generate their attributes/ability scores and Hit Points?
20 point buy. Hit points are at max for level 1, then average rounded up thereafter.

10. Does your game use alignment? What are your restrictions, if so?
Alignment is unrestricted, but your character has to be able to work with others. Remember the golden rule that the enjoyment of other players is paramount.

11. Do you allow multi-classing, or have any particular rules in regards to it?
Multiclassing permitted, with fractional BaB and saves.
Variant Multiclassing not permitted.

12. Will you be doing all of the die rolling during the course of the game? Will die rolls be altered, or left to the honour system? If players can make die rolls, which ones do they make, how should they make the rolls, and how should they report them?
Players should make rolls for relevant actions in the same IC post, or in the OOC thread for saves/reactions and if additional rolls are needed that won't break the flow IC.

I'll be rolling passives like initiative/perception/knowledge and anything that keeps the game flowing without overmuch back and forth. Attacks of Opportunity will generally be resolved by players.

13. Are there any homebrewed or optional/variant rules that your Players should know about? If so, list and explain them, or provide relevant links to learn about these new rules.
Two traits permitted. No drawbacks. Guns are Emerging. Bonus feat at 1st level. Background Skills (https://www.d20pfsrd.com/skills/background-skills/). Retroactive INT skill points.

We'll be going by group initiative, that is players go, enemies go, players go. I'll attempt to resolve actions within each group primarily by initiative regardless of posting order, but there may be some variation based on narrative sense.

I'll put a deadline for replies on my DM updates, expect to be about a week per update unless we find a different schedule works better. I reserve the right to apply small dread/sanity/madness effects to characters who miss their turn deadlines without prior explanation. Players with long or repeated unexplained absences will be replaced to keep the game going.

14. Is a character background required? If so, how big? Are you looking for anything in particular (i.e. the backgrounds all ending up with the characters in the same city)?
I'm not necessarily looking for a complete party of grimdark lovecraftian characters, I'll probably select a bit of a mix to balance the overall temperament and roles.

Characters must have:

A myth-weavers sheet
A character portrait image
A brief physical description
A brief personality overview

A short background is optional. Try and keep total text under ~500 words, I want to keep entries to a length I'll have time to review.

In this scenario it might seem sensible to flee the city. Whether it's heroic instinct, local ties, or just the promise of reward, characters should have a reason to stick around.

15. Does your game involve a lot of hack & slash, puzzle solving, roleplaying, or a combination of the above?
There'll be a mix as required by the published adventure.

16. Are your Players restricted to particular rulebooks and supplements, or will you be allowing access to non-standard material? What sources can Players use for their characters?
Generally published Paizo material is permitted, but see points 7 and 8. Published 3.5 material considered on a case by case basis.

https://i.ibb.co/fS0J4p2/Carrion-Hill-Map.png

Known by frequent visitors such as tradesmen as the Boil, or, more basely, the Wart, Carrion Hill rises over the otherwise swampy southern banks of Kingfisher River, the only solid ground of any reasonable scope in the swampland known as the Wrythe for a distance of nearly 20 miles to east or west. When the river fog rolls in every morning and evening, those who dwell on the hill’s Crown district can look out on a world of white vastness, while those below take solace in the simple fact that the ground beneath their feet is solid and unlikely to wash away after one of the area’s frequent rainstorms or seasonal floods.

Carrion Hill is split into three districts. Atop the hill, the Crown serves as the home for the city’s nobility, government, and most of its public works. The hill’s slopes are a thick tangle of buildings and maze-like alleyways; this is the Tangle, where the bulk of the shops and residences can be found. The lowest part of the city, both physically and spiritually, is the Filth, a series of islands both natural and artificial, connected by old boardwalks and stone bridges. The city’s poor and desperate dwell here, as do those industries so vital to the city’s prosperity but so unwanted by its citizens—tanners, gong farmers, street cleaners, the fisheries, and the looming middenstone vats. Yet the Filth is also the city gateway, as the vast majority of Carrion Hill’s visitors arrive by riverboat or barge via the district's refuse-choked canals.

Carrion Hill is also called the isle of 10,000 temples, and although the nickname is a significant exaggeration (there are actually a mere 180 temples in Carrion Hill, most of them but tiny one-room shrines), it seems that places of worship for gods both vast and slight grow from the very land. Shrines the size of cupboards, painted representations of gods with an offering of flowers beneath, rub shoulders with churches that somehow squeeze balcony upon balcony in tiny frames over almost decadently elaborate pulpits, and above all is the grandest place on the hill—the Ossuary Church of Pharasma.

A major feature of the character of Carrion Hill, especially in the poorer districts, is the building material Middenstone, the production of which also forms a major part of the city's industry. This somewhat nauseating mauve material is similar to a mix between adobe and concrete. Kept in a semi-liquid and foul-smelling state in the large midden-vats of the Filth, raw middenstone can be molded into sheets, bricks, or many other shapes. Allowed to cool, middenstone has the same strength and hardness as wood but is much easier to mold and is relatively resistant to fire and rot. Middenstone is used for piping, bricks, siding, and as a relatively cheap building material. Middenstone has a peculiar, somewhat sickening, violet hue which comes from the cockroach carapaces used in its creation, as well as an unpleasantly organic smell of tar, oil, and graveyards. The substance’s main disadvantage is that it weathers badly and thus buildings incorporating it need more upkeep than those of stone. Of course, to the creators of middenstone and the owners of the vats, this is in many ways a welcome bit of job security, as there will always be a need for more middenstone.

So we'll be fifth level and won't be levelling up, plus it's Lovecraftian (which is always a huge plus), so ideally I'd want a class that gets something especially good at fifth level.

Witch fits very thematically. There's even a Stars patron, which just adds to the flavour. Half-elves exclusively have access to a spell called Paragon Surge, which would be rather nice given third level spells are the highest level of spell a Witch can cast...

So yeah, I'll make a Half-Elf Witch of the Stars. She could be quite a bit of fun.

I do enjoy some Lovecraft in my Pathfinder.

Right now I’m torn between two concepts, depending on what the city is like. DM, how far into this module would it be safe for players to read, just to get a feel for the size and character of the city?

I don't think any of the module is safe for players to read, there are spoilers in the very first proper text. I can provide more info on the city though which I'll add to the first post shortly. Edit: done.

Maybe it's time for my Oread Brawler to resurface and float as a concept? I'm thinking something like post-Deadly Vipers Budd from Kill Bill, except less skilled and with a smaller time past: a very tired, very resigned (bordering on fatalism) bouncer type who nevertheless isn't quite done yet.

I see a distinct lack of arcane casters, I decided to make Jochen. (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheets/?id=2869388) (I'm not sure about the name, because it's very german, may go for Todd instead because I think it may get across a similiar feel).

Charaker-wise he's an optimistic country-bumpkin who doesn't get taken down that easily. (which may clash heavily with the adventure, but I guess you always need an optimist in every horror-movie.)

Gameplay-wise as a Unicorn sorcerer he can provide good backup healing (and healing a little bit with every leveled spell he casts, as long as he can see the target.) And has some damage-dealing and utility stuff he can throw around too.

Also I'm pretty sure the feat "Fear-eater" (which let's me take on fear effects of other charakters when I touch them) may get heavily used.

One rules question: I do enjoy group-initiative, but I have one feat lying around "Combat advice" (which as a move action, gives another charakter that can hear me a +2 to hit) where I'm not sure if that may clash with that. I don't have a problem with swapping out the feat, should it be too much hassle.

Just have to buy some stuff, then Jochen should be ready.

RCgothic

In the spirit of keeping the game moving I'm going to be fairly lenient on allowing modifiers to be added after rolls have already been made (which I think may be the issue with combat advice and group initiative). So it should be fine.

The entries so far are all over the alignment chart and I'm here for it.:smallcool:

Here is Erugazel (https://og.myth-weavers.com/sheet.html#id=2867970), ratfolk swarm monger druid and Elder Mythos Scholar. He specializes in ancient texts detailing indescribable horrors, and he's perfectly fine, although his whiskers sometimes twitch spasmodically for no reason. But he's fine.

Sheet is still WIP, backstory below:

_______

Middenstone is now a mainstay of the Hill’s economy (such as it is), but in earlier days middenstone was produced on a smaller scale, in much smaller midden-vats. As the industry developed, larger midden-vats were constructed on higher ground (such as it is) throughout the Filth, and the earlier vats were simply abandoned. Those which survived were later buried beneath scavenged wood, river-flotsam, and of course middenstone itself.

Some of the buried vats were built over with tenements and served as basements, their origins forgotten, until the aboveground structures fell into ruin. They were picked over, allowed to collapse into heaps, and used for trash-dumps as new islands were built closer to the slopes of the Tangle. But many of the earliest vats remained intact.

While still young and exploring the Filth, Erugazel found a crevice that led to the forgotten subterranean hollows of several old vats: each barely large enough to hold three or four yoomahns, but quite snug and cozy for his purposes. With a little work he had a three-chambered home: a mud-room for cleaning off the day’s detritus, a workroom and study for his trinkets and finds, and a sleeping-chamber lined with marsh-cotton, all of them warm, dry and with real olfactory character.

His clan had been marsh-folk, who made their living by gathering flotsam that drifted by on the river; but they all lived deep in the Wrythe, keeping a wary eye on the slumped dome of lights across the river. Erugazel had wanted to see those lights up close; he had set out despite his family’s warnings; and now he had a hidden and quite comfortable home, a perfect den from which to explore.

The many scuttling, skrittling creatures that the yoomahns called “vermin,” he called friends and companions, having grown up with the sweet music of their kindred out in the marshes. There was less of their music in the Filth and the Tangle, but a wealth of fascinating finds; and veiled in shadow, accustomed to slipping out of sight, he set about sniffing and gathering, and eluding what passed for a city guard.

He had an eye for oddities both intriguing and decorative, and a notion he might find some lovely young thing with fine whiskers and warm eyes to share his secret den; but the town’s ratfolk were a closed and sullen breed, and they made it plain he was unwelcome.

He might have continued scavenging castoffs from the Hill’s yoomahns for a season or two, then set off downriver for Cesca or Mosswater—but then he found a peculiar scrap of slate, inscribed with strange marks unlike any he had seen before. He puzzled and sniffed, copied and recopied the markings, until finally he borrowed a text or two from a private library, and read the whole night through—

—and realized with a jolt he had found something eldritch and inyoomahn, something both terrifying and alluring, and it woke in him a craving to learn more to defend himself…and to learn more of the secrets that the ancient script whispered to him.

Since then he has scoured every niche, every nook and suffocating blind alley of the Tangle, the Filth and the Crown, gleaning tidbits of arcane knowledge from the materials he borrows, and putting them to good use as he eludes the efforts of city authorities to track down the Arcanovore, as the town’s single broadsheet now describes the mysterious thief.

Meanwhile his modest healing talents have earned him a grudging measure of acceptance from the city’s insular ratfolk, and they have brought him word of something else: a stone tablet buried deeper in the heart of the Hill than the other ratfolk prefer to delve. Now Erugazel has girded himself with his most useful trinkets and spells, called his companion and familiar to join him; and together they plan to brave the depths in search of this new trove of eldritch knowledge—regardless of whatever tinge of madness may be risked by those who read it.

[Character portrait (https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1153365762371768482/1194844978577412188/Astraxia_Portrait.png)]

Zuri is a catfolk female of average build, standing at 5-ft, 5-in. with a weight of 145 pounds. At 28 years of age, she has a warm, mature face, with hazel eyes, a snow leopard fur coat, and shoulder-length silver hair. Her tail sways and bounces as she moves in a calm, pleasant manner, giving a confident smile that things will be alright as long as you stick with her.

Zuri has a positive, can-do attitude backed up with a playful, sarcastic streak a mile wide. She's friendly and courteous, but she is no fool. Her reflexes are sharp and capable of dodging around danger. Zuri loves company, whether she is working a job, or just relaxing at the local tavern. She keeps her friends close and earned loyalty is never lost.

Zuri grew up in the rough streets of Carrion Hill, learning how to get around the city climbing rooftops and over fences. The streets didn't break her, instead Zuri put her street-smarts to use earning coin as an investigator, body guard, and courtesan. She did the odd jobs around town, but avoided outright crime despite her very suspect and interesting skillset. Zuri has a big heart and instead used those skills to help others and earn a bit of a reputation as a hero of the slums. As rumors of a horror lurking in the alleyways spreads, Zuri took interest to investigate and lend her daggers in the quest to put the monster down.

Hey DrK! Hey Digo!

Thanks for the updated table Palanan, incorporating that into the first post now.

Update: Recruitment will close at 08:00 UTC Sunday 21st January!
(I was going to make it midnight Saturday, but that's both a bit ambiguous and also I'll probably be asleep. I'll review and select on Sunday Morning.)

Would the alchemist have been able to craft some alchemicals or some potions?

A related question: would it be possible for Erugazel to purchase several scrolls out of his WBL, and attempt to copy them into his spellbook?

Zuri's backstory is included under Personality. Unless you think I should write more?
I can write a little more to it.

A related question: would it be possible for Erugazel to purchase several scrolls out of his WBL, and attempt to copy them into his spellbook?

Ruling: Pre-game crafting is permitted, for your own character only, but you must roll any crafting checks and risk wasting any materials.

You may also attempt to copy spells into spellbooks from purchased scrolls and passing the materials fee. You get only one attempt to copy a spell.

The amount you've written is fine, and the table in the OP is correct.

Thanks. Mythweavers is being slow for me at the moment, I'll review and add it to the OP table when I get a chance.

Can we take 10 on the checks or it all rolled?

Can we take 10 on the checks or it all rolled?

Yes, you may take 10 on crafting and copying if that would be a success.
Rolling is for difficult checks or when in danger or distracted. Happy to clarify.

Part-charged wands permitted, but limited 1/2 or 1/4 charged.
I don't want to be calculating random fractions or permitting dozens of wands with single charges.

This is probably too late but what the hell I made this character for another game and didn't get picked and really want to play him. Heres Nicholas Lorchester (https://www.myth-weavers.com/sheets/?id=2867062) A Gloomblade figther. He was vmc barb but I see that is banned and but it's a quick fix.

Thank you all for your submissions, I will now deliberate and hope to make a decision shortly, either today or tomorrow.

I will be lenient with the mythweavers issue, be assured that won't count against anyone. As long as the information was available at the submission deadline it can go on a sheet later.

Congratulations everyone on your submissions, you've all made it extremely difficult for me! I've been unable to narrow it down to six players, so I've decided to take eight. Sorry to those who didn't get in, even with eight there was very little to choose between the entries.
