Artificer infusions have to be imbued into items, there's no listed exception. But in the artificer infusion list I found, I see instantaneous conjurations such as Wall of Iron. How does that work??

It works by the authors forgetting how they set up the rules. Just like how artificers don't have a save DC formula because none of their infusions require saves, even though some of them do.

The Spell Storing Item infusion specifies that that it makes the infused item work like a wand with a single charge. It would be reasonable to treat items with instantaneous conjuration infusions the same way, even if it isn't explicitly specified.
