Ok, I do one of these threads every year, so to keep in the tradition, what are your favorite Christmas songs?

(And don't bother to post just to say, 'None, I don't like Christmas, waaaaaah!')

-=-=-=-=-

My top 10 (and the preferred artist) include...

#1. Carol of the Bells - Any
#2. Wizards in Winter - Trans-Siberian Orchestra
#3. Breath of Heaven - Amy Grant
#4. Marry Did You Know? - Kenny Rogers and Wynonna Judd
#5. I Wonder As I Wander - Any
#6. Arabian Dance - The Nutcracker
#7. The Best Christmas - Christopher Cross
#8. God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman - Randy Travis
#9. The Gift - Garth Brooks
#10. Where Are You Christmas - Faith Hill

There is also one I haven't heard in years that I'm desperately trying to remember the name of. Was beautiful but can't even recall the lyrics.

Funny favorites:
Who Put the Stump and The Restroom Door Said Gentleman - Bob Rivers
Ramahanukwanzmas - Glenn Beck
OH HOLY NIGHT! - Kimmer Christmas

I like the "Twelves Days After Christmas" song.

I always had a soft spot for "It's the Most Fattening Time of the Year" (with Richard Simmons) parody of "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" of course.

My top five, in no order:
Deck the Halls - Nat King Cole
Hark, the Herald Angels Sing - Nat King Cole
Jingle Bells - Anyone
Frosty the Snowman - Anyone
Have A Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives

I love most of the really well known secular ones, minus Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, Let it Snow, and versions made of traditional songs.

As of the religious songs, I really like Hark, the Herald Angels Sing.

@v Thank you.

Burl Ives did "Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas" BTW:

My favorites:
Carol of the Aboleths
12 days of Abolethmas
I'm dreaming of a white Aboleth
Slimy the Aboleth
Slimy the red-eyed Aboleth
walking in an underwater Aboleth lair

As I sing more than I listen to Christmas music, I will instead give the ones I like to sing the most:

Cantique de Noël (O Holy Night)
I Wonder as I Wander
I syng of a mayden
Hark, the Herald Angels Sing
God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen
Stille Nacht (Silent Night)
Noël nouvelet
O Little Town of Bethlehem
Remember, O Thou Man
Un flambeau, Jeanette, Isabella

And a few technically non-Christmas songs that are lumped in with Christmas anyway:

Veni, veni, Emmanuel (O Come, O Come, Emannuel)
Lully, Lullay
Good King Wenceslas
We Three Kings

And pieces I like to listen to and can't sing:

The Nutcracker by Pyotr Tchaikovski
L'enfance du Christ by Hector Berlioz
Just about anything by Trans-Siberian Orchestra  *

*Well, okay, I can sing "Anno Domine".

Well most of the traditional ones are good for a day or two, most already mentioned... especially the Nat King Cole stuff

But I always look forward to some of the special, humurous songs like:

Bob and Doug MacKenzie's Canadian version of the "12 Days of Christmas"
(and a beer in a tree...)

"Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer"

and my personal fave...

"Dominick the Christmas Donkey"
(hee haw, hee haw)

Happy Holidays Playground :)

My favorite Christmas song would be Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (is that the correct name?), performed by Frank Sinatra.

It certainly has to be this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuvZ6isBwv4) or any other song from the "Die Roten Rosen" album.

Oh, and of course everything by Trans-Siberian Orchestra

If it's in a minor key, I like it. I suppose my favorite would be God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen (or Hippogriffs), with the Carol of the Bells as a close second because the days of fandom-induced neurosis are behind me, thank you very much.

I like many, many Christmas songs (I think I've loaded 26 hours worth onto my computer, but never put an appreciable dent into it in listening time) - but one that MUST DIE a HORRIBLE MUSICAL DEATH is The Christmas Shoes.

They'd probably write "The Sad Tale of The Christmas Shoes Song", though, and we'd have a whole meta-level of crying listeners.

Fairytale of New York, by the Pogues.

Mine would have to be...

*Father Christmas by the Kinks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjaPXihbORk)
*Happy Xmas (War is Over) by John Lennon and the Harlem Community Choir (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb2YSAVHmIE)
*Christmas at Ground Zero by Weird Al Yankovic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGdrMOttV_s)
*Blue Christmas by Elvis Presley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUyuGFoiWJ0)

Don't get me wrong, I love the traditional songs too (like this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HHm720d0_o&feature=related)), but those are without a doubt my favorites.

And I concur, The Christmas Shoes is probably the most depressing song I've ever heard, and I've heard Simple Plan and Fallout Boy before.

Gah, I never liked The Christmas Shoes. Not only is it depressing but from my first hearing I'm thinking, 'Your mother is dying and of all the things you want to give her you choose a pair of SHOES?!'

And whats annoying is how often it is requested on every single station playing Christmas music.

Or, for that matter, nearly any Christmas song performed by Frank Sinatra. There is a reason they called him "The Voice"

Hey, you guys gotta check out this one...

Carol of the Bells by Celtic Woman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKrx-4Awe70)

That may even surpass the Trans-Siberian Orchestra version that was my previous favorite.

Asside from a long list of Christmas carols, I’m particle to Snoopy’s Christmas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jlf---13Q0g) by the royal guardsmen.

"Christmas is Interesting" and "Chiron Beta Prime" are fun christmas Jon Coulton songs. Aside from that I like all the classics for the most part.

Hmmm.. favorites...

Blue Christmas by Elvis
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, only I like the Judy Garland version myself.
Mistletoe & Holly - Frank Sinatra
White Christmas - Bing Crosby
It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year - Andy Williams
Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee
Holly Jolly Christmas Burl Ives
It's Christmas - The Rovers
Do You hear what I Hear - Bobby Vinton
Silver Bells - Bing Crosby & Rosemary Clooney

But my ultimate favorite that always leaves me in total awe is

Gabriel's Message by Sting. We sang that in choir when I was in college and it is the most beautiful song in the world.

I have lots of other hymn types that I love, but brain not functioning and I don't own a copy of the hymnal that has the ones I really like.

"Joy to the World" has always seemed to sum up the totality of what Christmas is about.

Close second for me is "The Holly and the Ivy" because when I was a kid I loved to sing it.

But then I go on to the Jon Anderson Three Ships album. I love everything on there.

Is that the country-type one where he keeps going on about a kid and shoes? I hate that song with a passion. Guess what, Little Timmy? No one cares about your damn shoes.

"O Holy Night" as sung by pretty much anybody who isn't Josh Groban. I personally love singing this one. I wish someone would do a choral arrangement instead of constantly being solo. I think the minor fall before the chorus would be absolutely haunting done like that.

Hmm...*runs off to play with Finale*

How about The little boy that Santa Claus forgot (http://www.lyricsfreak.com/n/nat+king+cole/the+little+boy+that+santa+claus+forgot_20098103.ht ml)?

Heard this on the radio the other night. The DJ was campaigning to get it to number one for christmas. Bad, bad man.

Christmas at Home
Deck the Halls
It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
and I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas

I love christmas carols...

I don't really know what are my favorites though.

I like...
Hark the herald angels sing
Silent Night
First Noel
Marshmallow world?
Silver Bells
Let it snow

and for some reason can't think of any more I like, although I know they're there.

And the carols done by the celtic women....wow....

I do like Merry Xmas Everyone - Slade, and Wizards in Winter - Trans-Siberian Orchestra....But I dunno which one would come first.

Other than that...*shrugs* Ring out Solstice Bells - Jethro Tull?

Edit: Favourite Carol, would be that "Lu le lu la, thou little tiny child, bye bye lu le lu ley..." one....Can't for my life remember it's name though...

Also, "Taladh Chriosda (The Christ Child's Lullaby)" by anyone. There are a couple of melodies to this, but one in particular is hugely beautiful with amazing harmonies and one of the few songs that can make me cry.

EDIT: I just realized that the melody I'm thinking of is probably descendant from the same basic Scots melody that Leadbelly's "In the Pines" is from (i.e. "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", as Nirvana called it). I have a thing for the simple beauty of old Gaelic melodies.
