I like many, many Christmas songs (I think I've loaded 26 hours worth onto my computer, but never put an appreciable dent into it in listening time) - but one that MUST DIE a HORRIBLE MUSICAL DEATH is The Christmas Shoes.

They'd probably write "The Sad Tale of The Christmas Shoes Song", though, and we'd have a whole meta-level of crying listeners.

Gah, I never liked The Christmas Shoes. Not only is it depressing but from my first hearing I'm thinking, 'Your mother is dying and of all the things you want to give her you choose a pair of SHOES?!'

And whats annoying is how often it is requested on every single station playing Christmas music.

"Joy to the World" has always seemed to sum up the totality of what Christmas is about.

Close second for me is "The Holly and the Ivy" because when I was a kid I loved to sing it.

Also, "Taladh Chriosda (The Christ Child's Lullaby)" by anyone. There are a couple of melodies to this, but one in particular is hugely beautiful with amazing harmonies and one of the few songs that can make me cry.

EDIT: I just realized that the melody I'm thinking of is probably descendant from the same basic Scots melody that Leadbelly's "In the Pines" is from (i.e. "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", as Nirvana called it). I have a thing for the simple beauty of old Gaelic melodies.
