So Thursday, (December 13.) I was reading the newpaper (I think it was the Washington Post) and in the Business section, w00t! pops out at me.

"W00t" (hoo-ray for that small percent of people the don't know the meaning) was named: Merriam-Webster's 2007 Word of the Year...

A a short while ago I saw a lot of "Stop Leet Speak" banners in signatures, so how does eveyone feel about this? :smallamused:

Wasn't there something about this in a passage of Revelations?

Oh well, it could be a good sign. Maybe the geek population is increasing? One can only hope.

Yeah I read that too..

I felt annoyed I guess... but at least "W00T" (other than the fact the "O" is a zero), at least seems like a "real" word or expression... along the lines of: yay, wahoo, woo-hoo, yee-haw.

Using Pwns, rockorz, or 1337 would have upset me much more.

Meh, leet speak kinda was fun-- the first time-- then just got really annoying. :smallfurious:

I'm fine with w00t, pwn, and n00b. Beyond terms like that which are actually useful additions to gaming vocabulary, 1337 gets annoying.

w00t is OK as long as it is spelled Woot. Other than that, "leet speak" is the worst thing to come out of the Internet. A friend of mine at work says "so the dumbing down of America begins". I had to correct her with saying that this is the continuation of the dumbing down of America...

I wish "n00b" had stayed "newb" or even just "newbie". I liked it when it wasn't so much derogatory as a simply expression of understandable inexperience. With so many vulgar insults already available, did we really need another?

not really, I'm fluent in leet, and it looks cool. I use it to annoy those that get uptight about it.

1337 is useful in some (very rare) cases.
usually, it just gets in the way.
some words, though, (woot, pwn, noob) are useful in everyday language.
some words generally included in leet are actually imported from other cultures, through the internet. (uber, meh, kekeke).

@Xefas: we still have newbie. it dosn't mean the same thing as noob. and while we had other insults, this one is more specific.

1337 5p33k, to me, represents a mockery of the English language, a language so convoluted and full of its own idiosyncrasies, rules and exceptions thereof that it's laughable. Even as a native English speaker, American born and bred, I concede that it's a ridiculous language. 1337 is a satire, or at least, has become one. (Admittedly it probably started out as a substitution cypher to try to allude searches for key words.)

The word 1337 itself, of course, comes from "elite". Why is "elite" pronounced more like "e-leet" anyway? After all, a "leek" has the same middle dipthong. Why wouldn't it be pronounced to rhyme with "light"? "Trite" does. For that matter, why do "ite" and "ight" make the same sound, anyway? And why only part of the time?

Why is cheek spelled with two e's and speak is spelled with ea?

Why does the letter C sometimes sound like a K and sometimes sound like an S?

You could go on and on... 1337 pokes fun at this insanity by mixing up spelling. "fear" becomes "pheer" (before the substitution cypher). The two e's more closely resemble the phonetics, while the "ph" blend denies them. Why is it "phonetics"? Why not "fonetiks?"

Yes, I realize that there are reasons for all of these, mostly because of how much is taken from other languages. These can all be traced linguistically, because languages evolve over time. So did 1337.

Completely agreed. When I see people in YouTube commenting in 1337, I get very annoyed. I actually replied in 1337 once saying:

"It doesn't take anything to speak 1337! Get over yourselves!"

I use a spot of it here and there, specifically when I am aiming at a specific meaning. For example, I will occasionally use 'skillz' or 'sk1llz' when refering to video game ability.

Also 'uber', 'pwned' 'newb' and other lett-ish words. I shall describe them as 'leet-lite'.

Oh, and noob and newb are different (at least in my gaming circles).
Newb/ newbie: New to the game, eager to learn through instruction, accepting of criticism.
Noob/ n00b/ nooblet: Played game for a time, but poor performance due to refusal to improve, and instead focuses energy on flaming those better then him/ her.
Nab / naab: Someone who used to be very at agame, but due to mechanics changes of inactivity, has become a poor player once again.

yeah, using an editor is so much easier, it allows you to sift through the crap much faster...thouh with all the dialects as you said it isn't always 100% accurate, it is usually enough that you can figure the remainder out pretty fast.

Leet can be amusing, but it's also a bugger to translate, especially when you have all the different dialects of leet.
So yeah. If anyone can transate this, I'll be impresses.
Just to say that I can translate this. I just prefer to use the leet key fireforx addon. 5000000 much easier.

there, translated =D

I didn't know there was a firefox addon for 1337 writing. :P
I like using leet sometimes, but it's annoying because takes too long to translate.

One thing I "like" about 1337 is that it requires a complex translation procedure. It requires some pretty complex visual and audio recognition, used at the same time, along with a minor knowledge of the dialect.

On the other hand, that's also a minus. And it takes for too long to write.

(Though I translated Shakespeare to modern formal English to 1337 $P3@l/, as a question in English  )

"W00t" (hoo-ray for that small percent of people the don't know the meaning) was named: Merriam-Webster's 2007 Word of the Year...

I take serious issue with this happening. Merriam-Webster and other dictionary makers have a specific job: to keep a solid foundation under the english language so we have some change of understanding one another when we attempt to communicate. They should not be embracing and raising up internet-born dialects that are not understood by more than half the english-speakers in the world.

Don't mistake me for one of those people who thinks we must keep the language 'pure'. English is quite the bastard language, always has been, and is continually evolving and changing. A quick talk with someone older than 50 will reveal the surprising number of changes that have taken place in such a short amount of time.

I don't really hate 1337, I just don't care for it. I don't want to learn it and I don't want to read it. I don't really care if you want to use it, just don't count on being able to get your point across. Merriam-Webster has no business with it whatsoever, they are simply trying to get attention from the media and make you actually think about a company that makes dictionaries, an important but boring job.

Typing Incoherently
This is a written medium and people have to read what you write. Chat speak, l33t speak and anything that has to be “translated” falls into this area. You may have something incredible to say, but it won’t be read if you use “m8” and “pwn3d” as every other word in a post. The occasional typo or confusion regarding spelling is understood and expected, but at least take a moment to read over a message before you post it.

BTW, wikipedia says "is derived from the word "elite"" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leet). Ugh...

I mean what is elite in this? Since when dumb = elite? Who called it like that?

I guess that someone was trying to satisfy his/her ego.

Yeah, I agree. I use w00t all the time in real life.
However, Leet speak, in my oponion, is acceptable when n00b bashing on video games. Only exception.

Translation:
Leet can be nice in moderation, but people who use it in actual conservations, without joking, annoy me to no end. Woot, in my oponion, is one of the only 1337 words one can use in a serious manner.
