View Full Version : Request an Erfworld Style Avatar mk.II

The old thread is dead. Long live the thread.

Quoted From Lilly on the other threads. I am guessing this one works fairly similar.
<hr>
If you do not wish to request an avatar but still want a custom made one:
The Adoption Center (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/../cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=comics;action=display;num=1153776819 ;start=0#0) is Open!

Erfworld Avatar Artists: If you don't want your name up here, I will edit it straight away.

To all others: It is considered bad form to use an avatar without asking permission of the artist. Unless, of course, you have it specifically made for you. Please ask before you use any of the avatars in the portfolios of the artists unless it states in their requisites or on their portfolio site that you may use the avatar without asking permission.

If after you've posted your request to the request thread twice and there is no response, please PM one of the active artists below. (Do not repost your request until at least 48 hours after your original request, please.)

If you are PMing a request please do not PM multiple artists. They don't want to waste their time doing a favour for you if you've already got someone else doing the exact same thing.

A slight suggestion: to save loading time to make a post, please make a link to your picture after 3 days to make it easier on dial-up.

Guides to Making Avatars:
Please check here before you post a question about how to make your own avatars.

Here's version one.

http://www.jamihn.com/erfworld/avatarTemplates_EW_v01.gif

The two on the left are for human type characters. Thus far, Erfworld eyes are either solid black or circles with black outlines. Jillian and Wanda have stylized eyes with whites and all, but they're not on the templates. The eye style is up to you, but you can get a lot of expression with just circles as you all already know.

The two on the right are the general proportions I'm using for some of the monsters. The one with the BIG round head is a Marbit and the one with horns is a Gobwin. Marbits always have those two hair streaks. Thus far, we've only seen brownish Marbits, but feel free to come up with your own color combinations. Same with Gobwins. Most of the Erfworld monsters have white eyes with heavy black circles around them, but again, feel free to come up with your own.

Besides the gif posted above, I also have posted these templates as illustrator ai (http://www.jamihn.com/erfworld/avatarTemplates_EW_v01.ai) and svg (http://www.jamihn.com/erfworld/avatarTemplates_EW_v01.svg).

Don't feel you have to follow these things exactly. I created them to give you avatar ninjas a base to work off of. Have fun! I can't wait to see what you all come up with. So far, I'm loving em!

Both templates for ideas by the erfwordly Jami.

((If you want your name removed or added pm me. It will be best to check there sigs if they are taking requests etc))

Lifted from Death's original thread.

Roll up, roll up! Join in the fun. If you had a request in the old thread, please repost it hear for ease of veiwing. If you've never made an Erfworld-style avatar just have a go, most of the old guard of Erfatar makers have stopped, so it's in desparate need of fresh blood.

A tutorial type thing may be forthcoming, but no promises.

Let's get this thing a'rolling.

Bath - What program do you use for your Erfworld avatars?

Nameless
2007-12-15, 09:58 AM
Looks like inkscape? Am I right?

Dr. Bath
2007-12-15, 10:31 AM
BZZT!

Incorrect. That particular avatar was done on 'the GIMP', but usually I do them on MSpaint, or they're hand drawn. I've done a grand total of two on Inkscape, the cybowg dwagon and Moon Called's avatar.

To do it on the GIMP you have to have a tablet, so for most I'd suggest hand drawn. But paint can produce better results.

Abardam, Gengy and Urodivoi(sp.) all used Inkscape or similar vector programs on top of hand drawn bases, I think.

Hmmm... An Erfworld version of my current Avatar? It would be new territory, since orcs and half-orcs have never been seen in Erfworld, as of yet...

But I'm not sure where I'd put it. I'm quite happy with my current Avatar, and don't have any room in my Signature, unless I spoilerized it.

Erfworld supports flying units, and flying surfboards rock out loud!

I'll have a go at yours later, Surfing HalfOrc.

Rerun from the previous thread:
I want to make a request of an avatar of Avienda (http://www.dragonmount.com/Gallery/albums/userpics/11123/Aviendha.jpg), from the wheel of time.

I would love one in Erfworld style.

thanks in advance,
-Battleburn

P.S.: Here (http://www.dragonmount.com/Gallery/albums/userpics/15965/maiden_of_the_spear_72.jpg)is another example of a maiden of the spear like Avienda, I really like her pose, ready to fight, and with all of the maidens weapons.

Dr. Bath
2007-12-18, 06:54 AM
Blargh! So many requests! I'll see what I can do, but bear in mind that it takes:

15-30 minutes to sketch
10-15 minutes to ink
10-20 minutes to colour
5-10 minutes to format and upload to internet.

So it quite often takes a while for me to make one of these. Also, I'm away from the end of this week, so unless I can train someone to take my place (or one of the older artists come back *nudgenudge*) Some of you may have to wait a while.

@Vulion, overall good, I wouldn't suggest using inkscape, but that's your decision, but a few niggling bits that don't work.

a) The head is both a bit too small and too round. It should really not be done with the elipse tool at all, line would work much better. If you look at Jami's guide at the top of the page, you can see that the heads are sort of rounded square(-ish) with a flatter bottom jaw.

b) the arms are a bit like tenticles, if you put in a sharper turn at the elbow it will probably look a lot better.

c) the body seems a bit long to me, but that could be because the arms are short and the head is a bit small.

On a side note, did you mean to give him two different skin tones?

Like I said, a good start. Please keep going, it would be great for some new people to join in.

What I mean is that posting more requests to prevent the thread for dying wouldn't necessarily be a good idea, the good doctor probably has a lot on his plate already. If the thread drops down, so be it. I'm sure Dr. Bath will work on the requests and when they're done, he'll post them here, so the thread won't die.

Right then, as I said earlier in the thread, I intended to give Erfwood style a go, and have indeed done so. And as such, here is my take on Thecrimsonmage's request, which I mainly chose because he's wearing a large, body-covering robe.

Man, they always say that...

Keris Rain, that's really good! The main suggestion would be to go over the outer lines again with a thicker brush it'll make it look a bit less sketchy and more definite. Also, it might be worth making the trousers a different colour to the top, just a slightly brown-er red or something. Overall, teally good though, keep it up.

Which program are you using by the way?

@v Ablutionology. And awesomenesseses, of course.

Say, Dr. Bath, what do you have a doctorate in, anyway? Whatever it is, I think it would be very cool to have a Erf version of my avatar. Preferably with the orb staff.

Keris
2008-01-02, 07:24 AM
@^^ Thanks for the praise, I had trouble with the trousers because so much of the image was simply "Dark Red", and I only noticed the lines were too thin when I resized it, and that I missed out the Dark Aura from the original.

As for my technique, I started by sketching it by hand at 4:00AM new years day, then after waking up at Noon, traced it onto my computer with a Trust TB-4200 graphics tablet. I use Adobe Photoshop V4 on my computer, it being an outdated piece of junk still running Win 98.

Interestingly enough, I googled ablutionology and your post was the first hit.

Dr. Bath
2008-01-02, 07:35 AM
That might be because I stole it (subconciously) from Terry Pratchett (the second hit).

Ablutionology: The science of cleaning and washing. Note: this does not actually exist.

@Keris Rain, Photoshop V4 isn't that old. I used Photoshop 2 for ages, before it went kaputt. Just doing some big smooth lines around the edge will make it far more 'Erfworld-y', in my opinion.

Nice work Thecrimsonmage, my only comment besides 'that's very good' is that the gap in the chin looks odd, Erf skulls follow the Jaw-line, I think.
I've made an updated version of you, with darker trousers, thicker lines and a dark aura, I'll probably get it posted later today. (It being 3AM for me. Why do video games not let me sleep...)
I've also sketched out Tom Morello for darkblade, but if someone else wants to try it, feel free.

First off, a thicker-lined version of Thecrimsonmage, and a version with the dark aura.
http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z257/kerisrain/Crimsonmage3_Small.gif http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z257/kerisrain/Crimsonmage2_Small.gif

http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z257/kerisrain/darkblade_small.gif

Larger version:
http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z257/kerisrain/Darkblade_large.gif

All the small versions are 117x117... man the re-sizing can be cruel to some of them.

Just a note regarding my avatars, if you don't want to use them that's fine, as I'm not nearly as good as Abardam and Dr. Bath, and they may get around to you in time.

IGNORE MY LAST POST, PLEASE!
Sorry for the double post, I just had to make sure you did not bother to make me Darth Nihilus.

I have to say I am in need of an Erfworld avatar.
No, an Erfworld picture (that's right, you won't have to resize it!) of Abe Sapien. I do not necessarily require it soon, but I would be very happy if somebody tried this, after all..

Here are two reference pictures of him;
http://www.sobreiro.com/misc/abe_sapien.jpg
http://www.entrecomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/abe.gif
He is my new character in a play by post D&D campaign. Actually, he's my previous character, polymorphed into something horrible (for some, I just love Abe!).

If anyone picks this up, he should know;
He wears black pants and shoes like these; http://www.dynamicforces.com/images/HellboyAbeSapien.jpg, and he's barechested.
He has an azure-hilted katana with a sheath of the same colour, and a dark brown belt with many pouches.
(I know it is too much of a request, but I have to go on. I just want this to be perfect, and I trust you, guyz! Abardam and Sneak have helped me in the past, and all these avatars all of you guys make are trully wonderful!)

Last but not least, i want him to be lean and lithe. (he has a speed of 100 feet, and is by far the most athletic creature in the country). The pose is up to you...

This might go too far from the normal, erfworld avvies, but it may be worth a try.
So, please try if wou think you've got it.

either way, if anyone else wants to do it, feel free to do so, this one was only to know how hard it was.

Here are two reference pictures of him;
http://www.sobreiro.com/misc/abe_sapien.jpg
http://www.entrecomics.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/abe.gif
He is my new character in a play by post D&D campaign. Actually, he's my previous character, polymorphed into something horrible (for some, I just love Abe!).

If anyone picks this up, he should know;
He wears black pants and shoes like these; http://www.dynamicforces.com/images/HellboyAbeSapien.jpg, and he's barechested.
He has an azure-hilted katana with a sheath of the same colour, and a dark brown belt with many pouches.

This thread has been awfully quiet the past weeks. The last Avatar made was the evil Accordion player. I think that one was beautiful. So that's why I am bumping this from the second page back to the first page, in the hope to be able to see many more of those cool avatars made.

A while ago, back near the beginning of the first thread, I requested, and received, a wonderful Pigeon avatar.
http://s131.photobucket.com/albums/p296/urodivoi/erfworld/pigeon.png

I'd now like to request a follow-up pigeon-y avatar.
It would be an white-feathered, red-eyed pigeon, in a similar kind of pose to the old one. While the feathers would be white, if possible make them maybe a bit 'dirty-looking' (if you know what I mean), so that it's a discoloured pigeon, and not a white dove

Ack, I hope that all makes sense.
I'll be grateful to anyone who can manage this, and offer them imaginary cookies.
Thanks in advance.

Oh right. People are still here? Seriously? Fine. I'm going, I'm going.

Hi! Didn't see you there. Yes. I'm still here, and will be making avatars when I get the chance. On reposting, try not to. I start from the beginning of the thread and work forwards through all the requests. So it's unlikely to (read: won't) get your request done faster. Bumping the thread is ok, but reposting is pretty much pointless on a thread which is only three pages long...

All avatars will be finished. Eventually. Hopefully by people other than me too. *nudgenudge*
