Does anyone know of a rule preventing a wizard taking 10 on spellcraft when copying or preparing a spell from a borrowed spellbook?

This would work well here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=66326&page=4)

and no I don't believe there is any rule to prevent this.

I might not allow it the first time they used the spellbook that way, but certainly later is a valid option.

EphIt's a good idea if you'll succeed on a 10. Taking 20 would be impossible, due to the interaction between "assumes that you fail many times before succeeding" and "no retry for that spell until you gain at least 1 rank in Spellcraft (even if you find another source to try to learn the spell from)."

Taking 10 just represents taking your time to do something well. It prevents inspiration (the high roll), but prevents a massive screwup. It's allowable anytime you're not distracted or pressured, and is useful if your average performance is good enough, and you don't need your "A" game.

Spellcraft is certainly an ok skill to use this on... provided a beholder isn't trying to eat you while you copy spells.
