World politics

Most of the Orcs, goblins, Kobold Tribes are aligned under the Tribal Council.

Human, Xeph, Wood elves are aligned as the Union.

The tribal Council and The Union have agreed to live in peace.

College of Arcanum does not publicly take sides between the Tribal Council or the Union.

Wild Elves and dark dwarves are dark outsider against both groups.

The Game Start

Lady Sarah Windrage has sent each of you an invitation to meet with her over an offer she has for you. Lady Sarah is one of three highest nobles of the Human land. She resides in a small tower just North of Graydin, a small smithing villiage in the Northern part of the human plains.

The guards in front of the tower are quick to let you in at the mention of your names. After you are escorted to a dining hall by different guards. Once there you are greeted by a man who introduces himself as William. William apologizes on behalf of Lady Sarah and says she should be here soon, but insists that you have a seat and enjoy one another's company until then. A number of servants bring food and drink but avoid eye contact.

Rexob Qoten

Qoten was... curious.

He'd been brought to this location by invitation. And that was where his testing had begun - the courier didn't mention what was in the letter, exactly. It was a test if he could read.

Curious, and a bit bothersome; the standard procedure from a human noble was to vocalize the request with respect. Still, Qoten could handle a mild test or two. He wasn't particularly bothered by what the human nobility did; he wasn't one.

At the entrance to the tower, he noted one of the guards staring at him during his entry. It took a moment to read him - that wasn't the 'skeptical' look, nor was it a hostile look. It was more of an astonished look than anything else... the human likely had never seen an orc before.

Qoten stood at a massive 6'4, and had deep emerald skin. He's extremely muscular - arms rippling with strength, legs similarly thick from walking. He was wearing a vest, and it was open, showing that he had a lifter's build from a strongarms - he didn't lift weights, so his stomach was firm but smooth, whereas his upper body, arms, and legs were muscular. He was barefoot, and wore shorts that were the deep blue-and-white colors of his tribe. Beyond his vest, baggy shorts, and backpack, he wasn't wearing anything else.

Now, to an orc, he'd be likely more compared to a human than to an orc. He was short for his tribe, after all, and his tusks were painfully small, not to mention his hands weren't nearly large enough, his ears were far too human-shaped as opposed to large and batlike, and his legs were overly long. The only thing which seemed particularly orcish about him to an orc was his skin color, which was a very deep green.

But that was his lot in life.. he was an orc to humans, a human to orcs.

All of this brisked through his head in the flash of a moment. His statement of 'Rexob Qoten' let him in (After a moment of the designated guard looking... he'd forgotten that humans name their personal names first, then their family names. Which was absolutely backwards in his mind, but hey).

People who knew tailoring would know that his clothing was of astonishingly good quality despite being very thin - comfortable, but firm. He'd spent a lot of time working on it.

Inside, he glanced around at the food. Very much human-based - some meat, but not a ton of it, and everything was there to be split into smaller portions. Fortunately, he'd inherited his incredible stomach from his orcish side, and thus could handle about anything. Opening his mouth, he placed an apple into it and swallowed it whole, relishing in the small bump it made on his slightly elastic throat on the way down. He sat down into a chair, fairly hard, and sat there, his ears shifting towards sounds.

His eyes shifted over the empty seat next to him, to the man who had spoken, and responded. "I do not think we have met. I am Rexob Qoten. 'Course, humans find it appropriate t'explain their own names first, eh?"

Omara

Sitting at the table, Omara fills her plate with food making sure to get some of the more unfamiliar dishes in addition to the familiar ones.

"Well, I suppose we might as well introduce ourselves. My name is Omara Bast, an alchemist and minor study of the arts of Evocation. I'm not sure what this offer that Lady Windrage has for us is, but I suspect she has more in mind than a large shipment of Thunder stones."

Khemalee

A half-elf sits across the table from Mordak, pointing at her food for a few moments (with a fork, thank you very much) before having a tentative sip from her glass - and then another, much more certain (and larger) one. She is somewhat on the tall side, although not stunningly so, with a slightly ragged look that indicates she didn't spend a lot of time preparing. In fact, this time was likely none at all, given how her straw-blond hair looks - and that she received her invitation quite recently, and in a middle of a research experiment, was only half of it. From what's visible from the table, she wears simple dark grey robes of good make and maintenance, a decorative shawl, and no jewelry apart from a single earring.

She doesn't seem particularly interested in her environs at first, although eventually she picks up the theme of the convesation. Not unless she is under the impression that we are teamsters, and I doubt that's the case. Well, I can't help but wonder about him. I am Khemalee, by the way. Nice to meet you.

The servants jump at Dave's raised voice, one of them even drops a tray. William comes over to the table.

"Let me apologize again on the Lady Sarah tardiness. I am certain she will be here shortly.", he says return to the servant who drop the dish, and striking him with the back of his hand. At the same time while William's back is turned one of the servants drop a piece of paper on the table quickly before running back to the kitchen.

Help us. William and his men have taken Lady Sarah and is stalling till it's too late.

Rexob Qoten

Qoten... raised an eyebrow, at Omara.

Interesting. She very vocally stated that she utilized evocation. Of course, odds were that anyone who knew what specifically 'evocation' was wouldn't cause problems, but that was still a surprising statement to hear, as he was used to people keeping silent about their professions.

Introductions went around, and he factored them all away in his head, just for now, noting the reaction of the servants. He placed one hand to his chin as the note fell, glancing at the others - it was fairly clear the note had been read.

He stood, then, covering the paper with one hand as part of the pseudo-casual standing motion. If there was anything an 'orc' could do well, it was to be a distraction - he was good at gathering attention.

Thus, he shifted a little closer to William, keeping his tone pleasant. "Sorry... I don't mind to be impatient. I can see that your servants are also nervous. Is it possible we can help her finish what she is doing? Most problems can be solved by multiple people with keen minds all working on it, after all."

He'd been raised for some time among orcs, and thus kept his hands away from the orcish double axe on his back - he didn't want to seem hostile with the question, just curious.

Fonkin

A small thin gnome enters the room, flanked by a large man.

The two appear polar opposites. The gnome is small, thin, richly dressed with an arrogant condescending frown for everything he sees. The man appears tall, bulky, in bland robes, and a blank smile on his face. The gnome carries a small pack and wisps as he moves. His companion carries nothing but a comically large axe, far out of proportion to his body, and he moves with an almost supernatural silence.

Upon entrance to the room, they head for a place at the table. The man stands behind the gnome while he climbs up onto the chair. Standing there, he frowns at the food, his natural paranoia kicks in and he pulls out a hip flask for a drink.

The tall man is a silent image spell that Fonkin concentrates on when traveling. He uses the man as a distraction if combat comes up, and as a deterrent against those that may attack a lone gnome.

Omara

"Hmm?" she looks at Dave quizzically. "Why do we need to..."

She turns to look at William, pondering the situation. She could use a magic missile or two to attack... but that could kill him. She thinks for a moment and looks at the ceiling, checking to see how much clearance William has over his head. If its at least fifteen feet, she could probably create a Fiery Burst right over his head to light his hair on fire... that ought to intimidate him enough to surrender. She also looks to see how many lit candles or other sources of fire there are, or if she would have to make some.

Of course, she would probably need to know why they had to capture him, yeah. That would be something to find out.

Rexob Qoten

Qoten glanced at the remainder of those assembled.

Again curious. Odds were, there was more to this event than met the eye. After all, Qoten knew nothing of the political structure behind this; perhaps this was a ploy by Lady Sarah, to get them to act. Or perhaps a lot of things, but he had noted how the servants had reacted - he'd interacted with goblins enough to know when someone was afraid.

And he was not exactly one to hesitate when his heart told him to act. And thus, with a fierce swing, he both removed and swung his double axe at William.

Part of this, now, was to test the man's reaction. The man had left him his weapon - that implied that he was either stupid, or had a plan in motion. If it was the latter, the open nature in which Omara had revealed her arcane nature suggested that William knew they were mages - and thus was likely to have defenses against this. This was testing the waters, so to speak.

And as usual, this forethought was here and gone in a flash, as only the effects of his swing remained.

If one of those three attempts to stop him he will send Turin (the big man) through the door and tell them that he is going home.

OOC:((I am I really the only one that has noticed that as of right now I'm the only one that has actually read the note, and everyone else is just playing a game of "omniscient character?" Let's see if this one is as talkative as he appears. How delightfully ironic. Well now, one way or another raising a hand against Lady Sarah is a serious offense against law and Union. If she's not returned, or Gods forbid, if she's dead, you'll pray for a swift death - I rather doubt your patrons will view you as important enough to merit support.

She holds her pair of shears in one hand and promptly snips off a length of rope long enough to use as a gag.

The half-orc... had been watching William intently.

Curious. The human was a veritable fountain of information.

Now, he wasn't exactly the best judge of people, but he was watching intently - it seemed he simply didn't have a spine. Or, potentially, that he valued his health more than he valued his reputation.

Still, Qoten found his responses curious, which is why he didn't immediately shift when asked to shift, keeping his eyes intently on Willaim a moment longer, before walking over.

"What did you have in mind?" Qoten could correct her as to his name later - it wasn't particularly focal now, and being referred to by his tribe's name didn't particularly bother him.

I have some spells prepared, one that can disguise me, one that grants invisibility, another that makes fire explode and blind people... and a ray that really messes with peoples coordination. The others are mostly used to light things on fire."

She reaches into a pocket and takes out a little jewelry box, opening that, she pulls out a small bright pearl.

"I made this a while ago, it can help recall a simple spell once a day." She holds it out to the gnome. "I think that spell you used to take out these guys will come in handy. I can let you prepare it again from this if you wish."

"I think that our friend here is either a doppleganger or a spellcaster who used a disguise spell. The servant said they took the Lady a few minutes before we arrived. This is either a disguise spell, some kind of shape-altering spell, or a natural shape changing ability."

"I think I know what this guy is... I heard about some kind of rare monster found on the Elemental Plane of Earth. A sand-like creature that can shift into any shape but when bound and questioned it has to give at least a partially true response... kind of like every other creature in the universe."

She sighs.

"If that's the case then I have two questions: After we melt you down to glass, will you reform back on your home plane? And are you willing to sit down, shut up, and wait for the authorities to arrive so that we don't have to melt you down to glass?"

She calls some of the servants over and asks them to send someone to get guards from the town... or wherever they are sure they can get loyal guards from. If William agrees to stay put then Omara lets the servants keep him under watch.

"Such a blatant disregard f'r life... it's clear that y'can stop attacking him at this point."

Disregard for life? This... creature worked with those who captured the Lady Windrage, impersonated an official, beat a servant right in front of them, and had seemed... amused at being captured. Once she found out it was a shape-changer she just had to be certain that the thing wouldn't get up and gut the servants when they left... it had certainly seemed inclined to get up even when they were right there.

As it was, the creature was extraplaner... then what was this 'hiring document' it spoke of? Rare monsters from other planes don't just answer to bulletins, someone had summoned or gated the creature here for this job. And it spoke of a partner...

She keeps these thoughts to herself and just listens to what the others have planned.

Though she does open up her spell component pouch and pull out an empty vial, carefully pouring the little bit of 'sand' she had gotten from the creatures hair. If 'William' decides to pull a disappearing act then this could at least provide a focus for tracking him down later. His lack of concern could mean that he intends to planeshift out once his job here is done.

"Actually, I think I'll set the grass on fire and then detonate it. Cover your eyes until after the flash."

Omara steps away from the tree until she can get a clean view of the four people around Lady Sarah. Then she uses her Fiery Burst on a section of grass right between herself and them. Since she didn't attack anyone, she remains invisible but now a 5 ft radius patch of grass is on fire.

Then when the four enemies look toward the blaze, she casts Pyrotechnics on the blazing grass to create the burst of Fireworks effect. She closes her eyes tight and looks away just before the blinding flash to avoid being blinded.

((I don't think it would work that way... anything that affects a foe or the AoE of which includes a foe would imo break invisibility. Read the third paragraph))

Khemalee misses her partners words, and is shocked to see - or, rather, detect - the other wizard burst into action. Wait... That thrice-blasted, soot-flinging, reckless flamebrain! So much for cooperation, she sighs, and steps back into the woods so she's not looking directly into the flash, and further away from the men's sight and hearing. She spends the next moment taking some amorphous mass from a pouch on her belt with one hand and tracing a series of sigils with the other in the same trained, less than fluid but still fast motion.

Now if I can time it just right, maybe she won't get the pointy bits of attention she's so eager to get...Sengyi oth mrac y sdut, ozhide na maide frakove samrizhde. ((Cast silent image of three hooded figures at the end of the forest in the opposite direction - behind the blast which the bandits were looking at, one with its arms raised. Ideally, some of the figures will be hidden from some of the enemies. I can change the illusion as I see fit, right?))

Omara doesn't expect to keep her invisibility after casting pyrotecnics, but expects it to blind enough of the enemy that she can pick them off. its DC 16 will save, 2nd lvl spell and +4 to int. Her fiery burst attack just hit the ground and no enemies so she could start a fire with the grass. So she's still invisible until her next turn when she casts pyrotecnics, when she does that, she blinds a few enemies and turns visible.

Invisibility was mainly to get a good look at her enemy and keep it until she starts blasting them. She was in a bit of a hurry to start blasting before her invisibility wore off or one of them heard the whispering.

I suppose she should use her move action from her 2nd round to duck behind another tree or something, but she wants to keep an eye on the enemies to cast spells or grab Lady Sarah.

the three thugs are blinded and the one in armour approaches the illusions and speaks, "Who's there?"

Instead of responding, Omara uses a Fiery Burst on the armored figure, being sure to not hit Lady Sarah but seeing if she can get any of the other thugs with it as well.

Khemalee reaches out to the illusion, trying to fit it to the circumstances - the hooded figure makes a gesture which causes its hands to be circled in flames that arc towards the mailed warrior, while the two at its sides ready their swords and advance slowly and carefully. come on, damn it, get the lady out of here and let's go. she whispers hoarsely, trying to keep her mind on the spell.

Omara

Omara turns to the other spellcaster and mouths. "Can't you take this guy out?"

Scowling inside at her partners lack of combat ability, Omara casts Disguise Self to change her appearance to that of one of the now blinded figures in leather armor. Then she quickly heads into the clearing and tries getting the Lady out of there.

If any of the other enemies ask, she pretends shes one of them and asks the guy in armor to hold off the robed guys.

"Where the abyss did that gnome go?!" She screams inwardly.

((Do I need to make a spot/listen check to make sure what she's saying))

If the half-elf hears what she's been asked, she doesn't answer - instead, she appears lost in the concentration of the spell. The mage-figure begins a series of quick, but complicated gestures that leave a slight blur in the air, and moves its lips quickly as a coiled snake ornament flashes with a green light. The warrior figures nod in unison without turning at it, and assume combat stance.

Omara stealthily carries Lady Sarah out of the clearing through the woods. She stops to remove the bindings from her.

"Are you okay, my Lady?"

Seeing that the lady is safely out, Khemalee works on her illusion once again. The mage-figure gestures, and the others retreat back into the woods, breaking into a run as soon as possible, hiding into the woods. The mage-figure itself makes a gesture, and the snake ornament flashes much brighter - and then the mage just fades away.

Drained by the performance, the half-elf goes to rejoin her colleague quickly and as quietly as she can. So, feel like going back yet?

"Indeed I do." Omara nods. Though she tries to sound calm, her heart is beating quickly from their endeavor. The sooner they get to safety the better.

She moves as quickly as possible, bringing the Lady Sarah back to the castle.

"It was our pleasure to serve." Omara says to the newly rescued princess. "Though I hate to bring this up but the villains that captured you had a shapeshifter disguised as your servant William. We captured it and freed the real William... though we might have to do a check on all the people here to make sure there are no shapeshifters remaining disguised as staff."

The wizardess briefly stops at this and then, after briefly cursing her own carelessness, dismisses the Disguise Self spell that let her pass as one of the bandits.

"Naturally, you should have us checked by a qualified expert... and perhaps yourself. Eh, when there is magic afoot then sometimes it pays to be excessively cautious." she adds almost apologetically.

The half-elf appears slightly taken aback by the Lady's gratitude ((I thought she was only a noble, not a princess... )) and appears slightly nervous as she bows at the noblewoman's words.

It was a pleasure, Your Highness? Royalty? Majesty? Highness sounds about right, I guess er, Highness. Everything was more or less in order when we left... We are at your disposal should you need us for anything else Damn, I know I'm going to regret that one

"Sooo... I guess we just rescued the princess and saved the day?" she says kind of offhand. She never saw herself as the princess saving type and imagined that such a feat would be quite rewarding. Though if talk of hands being given in marriage started popping up then she would be less enthusiastic about it.

The half-elf looks at her dusty robes. Oh, dear, I suppose we get invited to some ball now. And my fairy godmother is so late I might as well start pushing my pumpkin and meet her halfway. she says matter-of-factly to no one in particular. She sighs, and looks back to the noblewoman. At any rate, Milady, could you tell us more about who those people were? It would be prudent to know more about them so they do not get so lucky again.

(I suck my bad for the lack of posting recently.)

The Lady shocks out of the daze she was in due to excitement. "I am so sorry I was lost in thought over the whole ordeal. I don't know who those men were but I am almost certain they work for Arcanum some how. I am sorry to put you in such a situation. I can see your a couple of the wizards I sent invitations to. I was hoping to discuss this in a much more suitable place but, my reason for drawing you all here is to ask you if your interested in helping me found a wizarding school for all races of this world. Open to any noble and bright enough to learn the secrets of the Arcane Arts."

OOC:
woah, I was just about to give up on this thread. Is there an OOC thread of this game I'm missing?

Omara considers this. "Hmmm... I never really saw myself as the teaching type... but it never hurts to try."

Thinking it over some more, images of buildings being constructed, tomes of knowledge being brought together... expensive arcane components and magical equipment being supplied for her to work on her projects... money making projects.

"In fact... I think its an excellent idea, Mi'lady and I wholeheartedly support your idea. The more widespread knowledge is the more opportunity it has to grow! And of course such a school should be set up to help bring magic into practical everyday uses... like magic items."

She ponders this, the gears in her head whirling as she considers the viability of getting dozens of students to work through 'potions class' making magic elixirs the school could sell for huge profit... though they'd best be careful not to let the stupid kids waste too much ingredients.

"Why, I think I could hammer out a combined class curriculum, fund raising program, and grading rubric before we have the plaster dried in the alchemy workshop." she starts to rub her hands together in anticipation.

The half-elf thinks for a while, and appears to be far from decided one way or another for several minutes, before finally shaking her head. I'm afraid I do not know enough myself, so that I can teach others, milady. I suppose I could manage an assistant position, but my specialty is a field where one needs to have a bit more experience than I have - in more than one way.

Still, some study could help me set some time and money aside for some proper research... she appears to think out loud, before going back to the topic. What did you mean by "noble enough", milady?
