The sun shines brightly over the city of Kelbion. Housing over 27,000 citizens, Kelbion is a port city that lies on the intersection of several major trade routes. It is ruled by the fair hand of Duke Armand Kingsley, and protected by the Renchem Royal Navy, the main aquatic force of the kingdom. Here, you can find anything that you might be looking, as long as you're willing to search hard enough.

Weary travelers are often directed to what is considered the the finest establishment in the city: The Halfway Inn; where the beds are always comfortable and the food is always top of the line.

Searching for the cause of an outbreak of soul-less births, this is where you have all ended up, searching for your next lead.

Okay guys, to start it off, lets have each of you say how exactly you got here and what you're doing now that you're here. Then have everyone end either inside or near the inn.

He knew not why, but he didn't need to. "To the Halfway Inn." he was ordered, and so he followed his duke, his father. He was also ordered there on horseback with all of his equipment and escorted there by 3 of his own lieutenants, but they were to leave him alone, and without his horse after he had gotten there.
And so, he followed it to the letter. "Verywell, men. Off you go." And Artemus Liembroch walked into the Halfway Inn and scanned the room. His domineering figure coupled with his thick armor and vicious looking weapon makes him sort of stick out like a sore thumb...
"Barkeep! I have been ordered here by the Duke Armand Kingsley, I can only assume you have knowledge as to why."

"I'm not sure why you'd be ordered here lad." the barkeeper said calmly, handing a customer their drink. "My inn is hardly a source of trouble. Perhaps the kind duke simply wanted you to relax a little." Normally, he'd be cautious of a man such as Artemus, but the knew full well the reputation of the duke's adopted son.

Aedras walked into Kelbion, taking in the sights. He didn't see what was so special about the place, but he wasn't one to doubt the words of a cleric. The city was baeutiful, and he took his time to walk throughout the City, looking at all of the buildings, getting to know the surroundings. After a few hours, he could feel the emptiness in his stomach, and decided to take care of his stomach, and get a room, so he asked around, and found his way to The Halfway Inn.
Once inside, he worked his way to a crowded table near the center of the room, introducing himself to the gathering with the sounds of gold hitting the table, and a quick holler of "another round", then smiling, turning to the closest new 'friend', "Hello friend, my name is Aedras, I'm glad to see there are others that think spending the day with ale in a mug and a tale in your ear is a good day".

Naomi

After a long but uneventful journey with a trade caravan from the north Naomi arrives in Kelbion. She had heard that children without souls were also born here recently. She hopes that some local sages finally discovered the reason for this terrible ... affliction ? There is also a chance to meet some old acquaintances and adventuring comrades in this city. In the last village they recommended the Halfway Inn and so Naomi asks a passerby for the directions to the inn.

She finds the place and enters it to get something to eat now and a room for the night later. Her maroon armor with the distinctive helmet attracts some attention from the patrons. Naomi finds an empty table on a wall near the door where she takes off her helmet and puts it next to her on the bench alongside her haversack, bow and quiver.

Description as in the character sheet, except for the naginata which is currently shrunken.

So, for other players, Naomi might be on friendly terms and have adventured with Sharra or Tiatiae, maybe also with Aedras and Mahogany Craig. She might have met Artemus before and respect him but I doubt that they are friends ... yet.

Sharra Daggerspell

Sharra Teleports into the inn first and fades into view second, seemingly stepping out of nothingness. At four feet high, she's tall for a gnome, and lean; her hair is steel-grey, and so are her eyes, which peer over the top of wire-rimmed spectacles. She leans on a thin staff which doesn't actually support her weight, given that both it and she hover just off the ground. Behind her sweeps a cloak of daggers, hundreds of knives intermeshed in multiple layers, flexing and flowing.

The whisper gnome drifts up to Naomi's table, and she has a seat on top of it, feet resting on the bench. The woman recognizes the gnome at once: an adventuring partner of only a few months past, Sharra was a somewhat retiscent but highly efficient arcanist, methodically disabling enemies for Naomi to finish off.

"So you made it here--took you long enough."

Mahogany never much thought about where he was headed. His feet had a mind of their own and he deferred to their wisdom. They knew what they were about even if he didn't.

It was the previous night he had seen the glow of the city and limped within, and in only an hour it already felt like home. He'd heard tell of the travesties here and there, and his heart was heavier than it was normally wont, a certain graveness to his face that didn't suit him.

Always having an ear out for the talk of the day he ventured into the inn, where comfort and drink never failed to loosen tongues. He had little money, but in exchange for a few tasks and an earful of news he payed his night with the proprietor and rested soundly.

He is now sitting at a table, surrounded by a small clump of men, all talking animatedly, though Mahogany most of all, though he does not stick out as anyone in particular.

He is a quite elderly, interesting seeming individual with a vague aura of... comfortableness. His ugly, careworn face has the same sort of appeal to the eyes as a pair of broken-in slippers would to tired feet. Where exposed his skin is deeply tanned with a sunburned looking red tinge. His fuzzy hair has been cut short and though white, is peppered with patches of a deep auburn hue, as is his beard. Sharp, thoughtful dark green eyes peer out from beneath bushy brows.

He is of just slightly below normal height, and heavyset, with a slight pot-belly. His movements when he stands and sits are casual and unhurried, not exactly thoughtful, but as if the proper rhythm was achieved and continues to be maintained. His feet are large and flat, or his right one would be if not for a clubbed curvature expressed in the make of his hand-made leather boots, and a slight limp that accompanies it.

Tiatiae

With a lazy tilt of her wings, Tiatiae performed a wide circle of the city, looking for anything out of the ordinary. Unfortunately something as horrible as the stories she'd heard about doesn't put up a sign that says "I was here". The thought of those children born without a soul was abhorrent to her, hence her arrival here. With a wicked grin on her face, she plunged straight toward the ground, pulling up at the very last second and dropping to her feet.

Asking directions from a merchant, she heads to the Halfway and finds a table, dropping her pack and things under the table. When a barmaid approaches, Tiatiae smiles, "Some wine if you would, please?"

Naomi

Naomi looks at the floating gnome with a wry smile. "Nice to see you too, Sharra. Well, for most people teleportation isn't the usual way to get around. I came here by foot, you know, those things at the end of your legs." She waves for a barmaid and turns to Sharra again. "Have a seat, I'll buy us a round. What brought you to Kelbion ?"

A short.. thing follows Tiatiae into the inn. It's a mere two foot eleven, but it's quite obviously hunched over and walking slowly. It's bones pop and groan as it walks, showing it's true age with each step. It looks up once it passes by the bartender, it offered a short muttering in Draconic and quietly made it's way to an empty table.

The creature sits, the shroud draping it's gaunt bones offers little to the imagination. It's thin, spindly little limbs seem about to break with even a gust of wind. The creature, obviously reptilian in nature, doesn't glance about or even acknowledge the other people in the tavern. It seems quite content to just sit in it's hard chair and wait. An elf quietly follows the small thing inside, and offers the bartender some coin for a glass of wine. Neither appears armed, but the elf is wearing very dull, battered chain armor.

The woman, an elf of the gray variety, sits down beside the gaunt figure in quiet reverence. Her silver hair and pale skin mark a sharp departure of her elven roots. She bears a strange dark red tattoo across the right side of her face, which extends up to her scalp. Strangely enough, not a single lock of hair grows from the tattooed area, and it's quite obviously not shaved. The gaunt reptilian figure offers a short and hurried conversation in Draconic. Mostly about the state of the "men" and their supplies.

Artemus takes his pint from the barkeep and sits down at the emptiest table he can find. His spear propped up in the nearest corner he waits for his questions to be answered. He looks around at all the rest of the people who have ventured here, particularly the bony kobold and the woman in maroon armor with the unusual helmet, though the particularly 'energetic' elf buying drinks for everyone is hard to miss.

"I still don't drink, but suit yourself. I'm here because you are--you, and several other people I've identified, who've been asking some very important questions. You know a couple of them. Ah, there's one now."

One of the multitude of knives forming Sharra's cloak drifts off towards Tiatiae, crosses her field of vision, and indicates the direction to Sharra and Naomi's table with a point. It drifts back towards Sharra, whether the Raptoran follows it or not, and rejoins her constantly-shifting knife-cloak.

"It's about the soulless births. Whatever's causing it, neither divine agencies nor elemental princes are both able and willing to talk about it, and more direct divinations are similarly futile. This is big." Sharra adjusts her spectacles, flicks her long, grey braid over her shoulder, and taps her staff on the bench.

Tiatiae

Sitting at the bar, the raptorian was half focused, drinking from time to time from her cup an listening to the general gossip of her area. A glint of metal caught her eye and she started, ready to fend off the attack. The knife, however, moved around and pointed toward a figure she recognized. She picked up her belongings as well as a bar stool and moved to her table, giving a grim smile as she approached. "It's been some time Sharra, I hope you have been well?" She then turned to the other woman. "Greetings to you. I'm Tiatiae." She sat, ruffling her wings slightly to settle her feathers.

Aedras felt a strange sensation, no, it wasn't even a sensation, he just suddenly knew, knew that there was something watching him, something he shouldn't even bother looking for. He sighed, thanking the bar-maid as she brought the last of the drinks to 'his' table, handing him his glass, and accepting the coins of course, he then proceeded to take a mighty swig of the drink, then setting it down, he didn't want to lose his wits. He stopped trying to coax a conversation from his neighbor and watched the bar lazily, trying to figure out who in here would be worthy of being spied upon, and wondering if it truly was for him!

Artemus stood up from the table and walked over to the place most highly condensed with flashy newcomers (you know who you are) and speaks up in a loud, clear and commanding voice. "I am Artemus Liembroch, highest ranking lieutenant of the court of the Duke Armand Kingsley! I have been ordered here by our good duke for reasons he did not explain to me. I can only assume people such as yourselves may know. I can also only assume I am to be the right arm of my Duke to aid in whatever matter needs taking care of."

Naomi nods to the Raptoran woman "Hello, I am Naomi Drakestorm. So, your are also here because of the soulless births ? There are some sages of great renown here in Kelbion an I had hoped that discovered the reasons for this." She glances to Sharra with a quizzical look on her face. "But they apparently haven't ?"

She looks up as this Artemus Liembroch approaches and introduces himself. "Excuse me ? My name is Naomi Drakestorm, but I have no idea why the duke might have send you here. I just arrived in Kelbion."

As you all go about your business, Mahogany and Aedras become aware of a invisible, magical scrying sensor positioned in the center of the room.

Sharra has See Invisibility up; wouldn't that let her see it? In addition, keep in mind her Nondetection abilty.

Sharra Daggerspell

"What I've been is divining. You're looking into the soulless births, so are a few others here. --Tiatiae, this is Naomi. She hits things with a sharp metal thing on a stick. Naomi, Tiatiae; she's a priestess of... something or other."
Sharra's head turns back towards Naomi. She's got crow's-feet by her eyes, but not quite enough wrinkles to be particularily old.
"No one's got the answer as far as I know." The statement is tantamount to an absolute no.

Her gaze flicks up at Artemus, and she examines him over the tops of her spectacles, her nose wrinkling. A couple dozen knives detatch from her cloak, forming an arrow that points at one of the unoccupied sections of the table's bench.
"Stop shouting, youngster. Shut up and pull up a seat, and obsess about your Duke a little less while you're at it. This is what you're here for."
The arrow dissolves as knife after knife returns to the complex cloak of shifting knives the whisper gnome wears.

Artemus takes up the offer and the seat at the table, taking another sip of the ale he carried with him. He sits in his seat very stiff, though it's unclear if it's because of his thick armor or because of his personality, though from the way he's spoken so far it might be clearer than expected.

Well, it's not so much invisible as it is immaterial. Scrying sensors are basically just gatherings of magical energy that allow you to see places that aren't right in front of you.

Rachel Lorelei
2007-12-21, 03:31 AM
(Actually, I beg to differ: "A scrying spell creates an invisible magical sensor that sends you information." In the SRD, the word "invisible" even links to the condition. Whatever the sensor is, it *is* in fact invisible; See Invisibility should pick it up, IMO. Your call, of course.

Edit: I can always cast Detect Scrying 'on a hunch' and make the point moot. But, no, that'd be wrong.)

"...and then, I swear by my fine hairs this is true, he ATE it!" Mahogany says at a point in his story.

Those around him burst into appreciative laughter, Mahogany right along with it. In fact, he wipes tears of mirth from his eyes as he continues, "And then..." when suddenly his eyes glaze as if hearing something faint. His story is cut off and he glances around thoughtfully.

He then turns back to his audience and smiles again, "Ah, but thats a tale for another day, and it can sit itself back and listen to! Truth be told this old mind is wandering and these old bones need a bitta stretching or they'll just stay that way, they're that lazy!"

He pushes himself to his feat and lifts a hand in parting. He then strolls about the room, glancing about curiously as if trying to pick up an elusive scent.

Aedras's ears pricked at Atemus's words, 'lifeless children' he silently wondered 'if those folk that stiff man is speaking to understand him, no wonder we're being watched, this kind of meeting is bound to catch someone's attention' he sighed, sitting up at the edge of his chair and scratching head "perhaps they'll prove more help than bribing townsfolk with ale" he muttered, nearly cursing himself for that slip-up as he got up from his seat, a slight wave to the merry drinkers at his table and walking up to the gathering, putting a hand behind Artemus's chair and leaning in, trying not to speak to loudly "what do you know about the lifeless children?" he asks, trying to put on his friendliest face.

As everyone is deep in their conversations, a nine foot tall fiend appears out of thin air in front of Naomi, and attacks in a flurry of steel; setting the other patrons into a panic. The creature appears as a giant snake with green, scaly coils from the waist down, and as a chain-shrouded female humanoid above the waist. She has six arms, all of which wield hellishly animate loops of barbed chain. The cruelly barbed chains also serve as her armor and clothing.

Oops, didn't see that. Well, everyone disregard my last post. Rachel, you are alerted that a large creature is teleporting right in front of Naomi.

Rachel Lorelei

(The fiend is delayed by one round--initiative remains the same; everyone who's with Sharra gets an extra round of actions or may ready actions.
For the record, Sharra's willing to blow a spell on defense because of the teleportation in combination with the scrying (despite not knowing who's teleporting in until the fiend shows up).)

"Someone's teleporting in, there! I've delayed it a few seconds; get ready!"

Sharra's points out the place--in front of Naomi--while she's dipping a hand into a pocket to produce a material component, launching into a Greater Blink spell for defense. Then she steps to the side, vanishing from sight in the blink of an eye.

As the fiend appears, the gnome's cloak of knives spreads around her into a halo; a creature peeks out of her vest for a moment, and two of the knives, leaving streaks of mist behind them, shoot forth right at the thing's face. She reappears just behind the fiend before launching into a quick spell and levelling a (unseen) hand. Then wings unfold from the gnome's back, and a single flutter sends her upwards, passing through a rafter due to her blinking state. She vanishes before she lands.

During the delay round: Greater Blink.
Knowledge: Planes, presumably, to identify, +5 from Collector of Stories: [roll0]
Free action at start of round: ranged touch attack (Find the Gap) with the Cloud of Knives: [roll1] for [roll2] + [roll3] sneak attack. Doesn't beat any DR except /magic.

Standard action to cast Irresistible Dance with Arcane Reach. SR check: [roll4]. If the fiend isn't immune to mind-affecting spells and the SR check succeeds, it dances for [roll5] rounds.

Edit: does the Dance work or not? That would be visible, and potentially affects everyone's actions.)
Hide check for the round before the demon teleports in: [roll0]
Also, Sharra's familiar peeks out of its Familiar Pocket and looses an attack from its own Cloud of Knives (Share Spell): [roll1] ranged touch to hit; [roll2] + [roll3] (Shared Hunter's Eye) sneak attack.
Edit 2: free action to fetch the familiar from its Pocket, and a free action for it to go back and seal it, getting full cover and full concealment from everything while it's in there.

Edit: that Knowledge check also happens before anything; if I get any details about the monster, immunities first, then SLAs, then saving throws, and I doubt I get more than that. If Sharra knows this thing is mind-immune, I'll go back and edit my post.
Dancing means it takes no actions, gets no shield AC, gets -4 AC and -10 Ref saves, and provokes AoOs on its turn.

((taking only the delay round action now, since posting actions in order isn't neccessary yet))

Naomi rises from her chair, takes a step back from the table and says "Orkhane". The miniature polearm in her hand enlarges to a full size naginata and she grips it with both hands. A standard of a golden dragon on maroon is attached right below the blade.

I'm assuming, BTW, that it appears at the top of the round, rather than on its initiative, since creatures teleporting in normally roll initiative (rather than going right away, i.e. they appear at the top of a round) and Anticipate Teleport uses the initiative order.

The shroud-wrapped kobold doesn't make any effort to move, but the gray elf hops up immediately once Sharra warns everyone. She draws both blades and readies herself for the creature's appearance.

Kelborn does nothing. Simple enough.

A nine foot tall fiend appears out of thin air in front of Naomi, setting confused patrons into a panic as they all rush to get out. The creature appears as a giant snake with green, scaly coils from the waist down, and as a chain-shrouded female humanoid above the waist. She has six arms, all of which wield hellishly animate loops of barbed chain. The cruelly barbed chains also serve as her armor and clothing. It appears as though a shroud of unholy darkness is surrounding her as she blinks in and out of reality.

Sharra Daggerspell

As soon as she sees that the creature appearing is, as she reasoned, no peaceful traveller, she acts. She times her blinking to the fiend's (her spell rendering her capable of striking it on either the material or ethereal plane), and her familiar peeks out of her pocket. Two knives flash from her cloud, trailing mist and aimed for the demon's face; then Sharra speaks a word, intones a short phrase, and levels a hand--and spreads draconic wings, a single flap sending her up. She fades from sight as she goes, hovering unseen 25 feet over the demon's head.

Spellcraft autosucceeds on identifying the blink spell.
Sharra's and the familiar's Cloud of Knives spells hit touch ACs of 45 and 42 respectively, doing 38 and 30 damage respectively, beating DR/magic (only).
Sharra then casts Assay Resistance as a swift action (sacrificing Ray of Dizziness), and arcane-reached Irresistible Dance as a standard action. Forgot to roll a ranged touch attack for the Dance, so it's [roll0], and she beats SR 36. Duration on the spell is 2 rounds. Sharra's Hide check is 60.

He yells out "Hey Ironbox, watch this for me" as he tosses his wand at Artemus, then clasps his sword between his teeth. He leaps into the air, spinning backwards, closing in, and grabbing hold of the chandellier above the Fiend's head. Then she floats sideways and fades from view, reappearing a few feet away after a sizzling orb of acid has already hurtled towards the fiend.
"It's the Cathezar--definitely malicious. Less than ten seconds before the spell wears off," Sharra announces. Her dagger-cloud swirls out of the way of the draconic wings spreading from her back, flapping far too gently as she hovers.

(Zimmia did, but it needs nat-20s to hit and it can't overcome the fiend's DR.)

Another pair of daggers slice through the air, this time aimed for the kidneys.

As Sharra reappears, she glances up at Mahogany, a little irritated, focused on analyzing the situation.
"The Cathezar. Notorious fiend; half demon, half devil, all spite. If you can't help finish it, move aside."

And with that, the fiend starts to shake free from the Irresistible Dance. Sharra weighs her options, and decides that finishing the thing off is both possible and worthwhile; she moves and vanishes, and then two of her daggers appear, whirling and crackling with negative energy, until they are transfigured from hovering knives to discs of death-power as they zip towards the Cathezar.

"It's drained; hit it with a spell." her voice announces to anyone who might have the wherewithal.

Cloud of Knives: [roll0] and [roll1]
Damage: [roll2] with [roll3] sneak attack and [roll4] with [roll5] sneak attack respectively.
Sharra uses one of her Athenaeum of Boccob-born Sudden Maximizes.
Split Ray Enervation: [roll6] and [roll7], ranged touches.
[roll8] and [roll9], +1 CL on Necromancy, to overcome SR for the rays.
Maximized to 4 negative levels (and therefore -20 HP, on top of Zimmia's) each. The first one to hit adds [roll10] sneak attack (you can, in fact, sneak attack with Enervation--the sneak attack damage is negative energy).
Edit: Sharra's hide for the Enervation: 1d20+55=70 (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1452205/)

(Here's hoping Aedras and Mahogany can finish it off before it gets a chance to act. :smalltongue:)

Sharra's first dagger attack bounces off the Cathezar's armored skin, the first disk of negative energy misses as well, flying through empty space as the Cathezar blinks out of the way.

((Sorry I'm not being more descriptive, I'm just burned out from writing a backstory for something unrelated.))

Rachel Lorelei

(Wait, really? The knife is a ranged touch, and Sharra's Greater Blink lets her attack a Blinking enemy without the miss chance, or so I thought.)

Ellas Aramond
2008-01-05, 03:07 AM
((The knives are ranged touch attacks? Huh...didn't know that. And the lower level blink spell has the subject blink at completely random intervals, so even with your greater blink, its still impossible to tell when someone's going to blink. I've been lessening the miss chance for ya though.))

Rachel Lorelei
2008-01-05, 03:16 AM
(Spoilered for space.)
The knives are ranged touches because Sharra has persisted Find the Gap and shared it with her familiar. I freely admit that using a ninth level spell just so I can regualrly hit with Cloud of Knives is kind of overkill, but the knife-cloud is stylish. And lets me deliver sneak attacks all day. :smalltongue: Does that mean that some of the missed knives have hit? Because the sneak attack adds up.

As for the Blink spell, it reads "If the attacker can see invisible creatures, the miss chance is also only 20%. (For an attacker who can both see and strike ethereal creatures, there is no miss chance.)"
Sharra can both see and strike ethereal creatures. Flavor-wise, the spell targets instantaneously; so whether the fiend is material or ethereal, Sharra can hit it. "
If you feel that the text is at odds with what seems like it should happen, I'll take the ruling without qualm, but rules-wise I don't think there's a miss chance. Of course, if you've been marking her miss chance down to 20%, it should probably be lower, since See Invisibility alone turns Blink's 50% into a 20% and Sharra can blink too.

I know this isn't an OOC thread, but I wanted to contribute

Alright, not my discussion but I'm giving my two cents, ignore it if you wish XD

Anyway, you can see invisible so yes the miss chance would be 20%, but unless your abilities are force, then you can't actually hit an ethereal target, at least not with full certainty. So if you're blinking at a different time than your opponent, you still have the chance to be on the wrong plane at the wrong time.

I'd personally give you at most a 20%, probably closer to 10% just because the effect you tried makes some sense, but from what I see it's not fully certain, just highly likely you'll hit.

It's completely up to Ellas for the decision though, since giving you a 100% chance to hit wouldn't really throw the game mechanics into dissaray anyway.

Rachel Lorelei
2008-01-05, 03:35 AM
The thing is, Greater Blink does let you hit ethereal targets, because you're ethereal whenever you want to be. You can hit or avoid ethereal or material targets with ease; both have 50% miss chances. So can I see invisible? Yes, miss chance drops to 20. Can I hit Ethereal targets? Yes, so the miss chance is gone. At least that's how I read the rules--like I said, I'm totally willing to accede to the change--but that's what I see it as.

Ellas Aramond
2008-01-05, 03:37 AM
The thing is, with greater blink, you can only hit the ethereal targets, if you're both on the ethereal plane, so there'd still be a miss chance.

(All right. The sneak attack should still apply to the second Enervation ray, though; it's once per volley, but the first shot of the volley missing doesn't deprive you of it. How much HP does this thing have anyway? Is there any way to evaluate total or remaining HP--Sense Motive, Heal, or something?)

But there is a name we have uncovered. the 'Bastion of Unborn Souls'. I've heard the Cathezar mutter this, as well as her desire to fine a descendant of Dydd, so that 'the wyrm might be tamed'. Unfortunately, I cannot tell you more."

"As for Dydd himself, he was, if bardic songs and legends are to be believed, a ancient druid to put an end to a fearfully powerful red dragon. But, as the tales tell, he was slain in the process."

He then turns to Sharra, looking very relaxed despite the bits of metal death floating behind her. I am a simple servant, allied with he who opposes the Cathezar and her master. Unfortunatly, I am honor bound never to reveal my master's true identity, thought he goes by the name of Hethradiah when dealing with those such as you and me.

"I just know it was teleporting in next to you. Doesn't mean it's you for sure, but it's more likely than not. How much d'you know about your ancestry? Any druids in the line? Well, we'll find out tonight; I'll work some more divinations. I think we want to go after the Cathezar, too, once I find out where it went. How about the rest of you? The kobold waits until Lithana returns, and spends the time speaking to Mahogany. "I heard you telling stories before the fiend came. May I trouble you to hear some myself? I may be old, but I enjoy a good scare now and again.."

Sharra asks everyone to chip in for the (1,125 gp -- with six people, 187.5 each) scroll, purchases it (presumably at a particularily high-end mage's place), and creates a Rope Trick in an out-of-the-way location. A rope snakes up into the air, opening into a featureless extradimensional space--a habitable hemisphere of faint grey light against a backdrop of pure nothingness.

As everyone is beginning to climb into the Rope Trick, she furtively casts another spell (sacrificng Slow for Divine Insight), and proceeds to connect everyone except Nurn via a Telepathic Bond spell.

Once in the Rope Trick, she reads the scrolls of Private Sanctum; a thick mist rushes out, flooding the area, and vanishes, as the paper itself expires. Her thoughts flow out along the intangible mental connections she's created.
I've connected us via a Telepathic Bond spell. Nurn isn't included. You can communicate mentally to any of us, or all of us involved. This way we can confer without his hearing. I've probed his mind and found a number of things that make him untrustworthy, but he can still be useful. Keeep a straight face and try not to look alarmed or surprise.

(Taking 10 on the Sleight of Hand check to cast Telepathic Bond unnoticed by Nurn, expending Divine Insight.)

"I apologize. I travel too much, and gold attracts bandits, no?"

The kobold doesn't change his facial features when Sharra speaks in his mind. So why, pray tell, did you find it fit to invade our privacy if you do not trust this man? Would it not have been easier to dispose of him than allow him to fester as a threat to our safety?

I see no reason to mistrust this man any more than the rest of you folk, and it would seem his knowledge is invaluable. Even if he is using us, we might as well do the same to him, and if he plans to betray us, it won't be any easier to defeat him now than later, if we must.

Aedras finds his way into the extradementional safehouse, looking around at the mist "are we ready then?"

"Extradimensional space," Sharra explains to Mahogany, a single beat of her wings taking her up the rope, daggers streaming behind her. The lack of telepathic contact makes her think, and she invokes a Greater Arcane Sight spell as she goes (sacrificing Solipsism), examining her companions.

"All right, Nurn. Let's discuss," she says, once everyone has climbed into the Rope Trick and it's been protected against scrying. "Right now, my plan is to divine the location of the Cathezar's dwelling, teleport or plane-shift in, and either knock her out and then interrogate her or kill her and search the place. After that, we seek out the people Dydd was associated with; the Guild of Sleep and Church of the Elements."

Once she's spoken, her thoughts are cast outward, along the Telepathic Bond, to her companions.
Artemus, if you jump him before I'm ready for it I will be severely displeased. The reason not to trust him is because he's not a man, he's a Death Slaad, and his master is none other than a head of Demogorgon itself--as is the Cathezar's master, which is why they're in conflict. I've read his subconscious, and he won't turn on us unless we go after his master, or if he thinks he can gain whatever it is the Cathezar's master seeks.

"Sounds like a plan." Nurn nods in agreement when Sharra is done speaking. I've been thinking of doing so for some time now. But you'd agree, one man against a being such as the Cathezar would be madness.

As for those groups, how can we be sure that they still exist? After all, Dydd's legendary battle was a long time ago.

Lithana has strong trans gloves and moderate trans amulet. I need a DC 46 Spot check to tell anything else.

Spellcraft to determine the spell she casts: Autosuccess.

Kelborn shoots the gnome a flat glance. I would rather you kept your eyes to yourself, friend. It's generally considered rude. But more importantly.. Demogorgon you say? Then he's likely to turn against us the moment we succeed. Demons have a tendency to betray as often as they assist.

"A better question would be: How can we be sure these groups will know anything about the Cathezar at all? Guilds and churches tend to forget the legends that give them rise."

Yes, Demogorgon; as long as we're working with one head against the other, we are relatively safe from treachery.

"We can't be sure, of course. But they might be able to tell us something useful. Still, there are more direct methods availible."

The night before, Sharra asks the warriors to purchase oils of Bless Weapon, to battle the Cathezar. She also makes some requests of Tiatiae, in terms of spell preparation:

Sharra requests at least two Greater Dispel Magics prepared to deal with the Cathezar's spells, and a pair of Align Weapon spells to help the warriors overcome the Cathezar's regeneration (provided they can't get Bless Weapon oils). A Blade Barrier, Empowered if possible, would help kill the Cathezar once Sharra has made her Dance again.
As well, a Mass Conviction (SpC) for the group would be good, as would a Heroes' Feast in the morning.

Beyond that, if Tiatiae is willing to listen to more general advice,
she suggests that Energy Drain and Miracle are both good uses of 9th-level spell slots, a lot better than most alternatives except Mass Heal, which there should probably be at least one of.

For 7th level, she recommends Radiant Assault (which is delicious cake; I can PM you the details if you have no spell compendium) and perhaps one Mass Spell Resistance.

She'd also appreciate a Magic Vestment spell--two ideally, but one's plenty--if it can be spared, but if there are other priorities that's understandable.

She also examines Naomi and Artemus' weapons, the night before, to determine whether they are +5, and prepares Greater Magic Weapon for either or both if they need it. (Let me know if you do, and I'll mark the spell slot off.)

---

The next morning, Sharra looks little different. She is once again winged, once again trailed by a cloud of floating knives.
Once everyone is gathered, she gets down to business. "All right. Anyone who has spells that last longer than, oh, an hour, now's the time. Open your minds; I'm going to connect us via Telepathic Bond so we can communicate in the thick of things."

Uh. That would be why I'm checking for traps. If the door isn't trapped, Sharra opened it but didn't step in (I wanted to look at the room first... cast Spontaneous Search... that sort of thing). If opening the door is what triggers the trap, then the door is trapped, and checking it for traps should have found it (unless it's got a Search DC over 41).
Also, all of her spells, no checks? A disjunction trap? o.O

((Ummm...yeah...I am way too trigger happy...thought you said something else...Lets just forget that ever happened.))

The door isn't trapped, and as you look in all you see is is a abandoned room, covered with layers of cobwebs and dust.

Far too suspicious to trust her eyes, Sharra casts Arcane Sight, hand briefly touching one of the small rods on her person , presumably seeing the magical auras of the traps. Plus whatever else is in there.
If the room is not much bigger than 20', Sharra also casts Spontaneous Search, drawing on the power of a mystical location she visited a few months ago.

Sacrificing the Unluck spell; using a Lesser Rod of Extend to extend Arcane Sight to 46 minutes (CL 23 for divinations).
Using the power of her Cloudseat to cast Spontaneous Search as a swift action, searching a 20' burst around her as if she'd taken 10.
Concealed Spellcasting used as always.

Now--where were those traps at? The first square? :P

Outside

Aedras walks about, confused "I'm certain I'm much too young for my mind to be giving out on me, but I feel I'm missing something here" he says, walking over to where Sharra ran into solid stone, knocking at the earth.

40 on search to try and find where the 'entrance' is by non-visual means.

"I've found some traps--this is definitely the right place. No sign of life so far; pretty safe to advance down the stairs. Don't turn the corner if you can't stay quiet." Sharra sends over the Telepathic Bond.

Kelborn

Kelborn casts detect magic, then directs his gaze toward the illusion. Once he's identified where it is from the magical aura, he heads through the stone.

The kobold goes downstairs, as instructed. He also leads Aedras and Naomi through the illusion, smiling at the youngster's inability. He cannot move silently, but he does Hide himself in the shadows.

Lithana

The elf follows behind Kelborn, going slowly. She heads around the corner and goes toward where Sharra is. She doesn't speak, but she's already drawn both of her lightblades in the event of danger.

Taking 10 on Hide/Move Silently for 36 on both. Kelborn takes 20 if possible, 10 if not, for a 44 including penalties, 34 if he can only take ten.

Aedras walks just behind the others, visualizing the task ahead of them, and mentally preparing for the possible danger. He slips in behind them, scanning, slinking into the shadows and surveying the area as they continue.

Aedras uses Lend Talent to grant those around him a +4 to their move silently and hide checks, giving himself a -4. He takes 12 on his checks, producing 38 on both, and a 37 on any spot or listen checks, and 40 on search checks if the others are moving slowly enough to allow him to.

Mahogany grins at the illusion and steps within, then out, then in again, obviously enjoying himself.

He traipses along behind everyone, most certainly the noisiest of the group, but he takes care not to say anything aloud or make any undo racket.

He stops at the bottom of the stairs, and with a curious expression lies his hand against the wall of the tunnel.

Tiatiae

Having known that there was some sort of illusion at work but not exactly sure what it was, Tiatiae follows with the others in the middle to end of the group down the stairs, taking care to be as quiet as possible.
Taking 10 on Hide & Move Silently (with +4 from Aedras) (17's on each)

Take 10 on Spot (25) and Listen (19) check on the way down.
