Does anyone know of a free online strategy game?

Good graphics are not necessary. Graphics are not necessary. Must be able to work on a mac - so html based is fine.

Preferrably not one dominated by several people with too much time on their hands.

Looking for long-term playability and interactivity, customisability is also good.

I enjoy civilisation-building and war games most of all.

Not dominated by people with much time? Wow... Thats hard, the closest i can suggest is some that are in rounds like:

Stellar-Realms (www.stellar-realms.com) - Give a look at the thread if you want.

Hyperiums (http://www.hyperiums.com/show/slide0.html) - Quite good game, several servers most are rounds but the one is permanent, give at this apresentation of the game.

These are the ones i can think of but if you like WAR then you can play this online.

Conquer Club (http://www.conquerclub.com/index.php?ref=156914) - Its free, each turn is 24 hours.

Imperium Nova (http://www.imperiumnova.com:8080/Imperium/) is fairly popular on these boards.

Thanks everyone - finally a new way to quench my desire for world domination since I stopped playing Civilisations IV.

While it seems your request was already fulfilled, maybe you would be interested in a few more suggestions - specifically, I wanted to say that

The Battle for Wesnoth (http://www.wesnoth.org/) would fulfill all of your specifications. A really fun fantasy turn-based strategy game, with sufficiently simple rules which nevertheless allow for astoundingly complex strategies, unit advancement, both a ton of campaigns and a fun multiplayer, and a lot of customisability as well.

Yes, but not dominated by people with too much time on their hands, which was the criterion mentioned :) Seriously, now could be a good time to join one of the established galaxies, learn the ropes and then be ready to hit the ground running in Draco

If you are willing to wait a long time, HoMM Kingdoms looks like it won't be too bad.
