They were going to the same kindergarten. But it's a secret.

Probably not.

It's assumed that the MitD is some sort of monster, but no one knows what monster. At best, we only know that it's NOT the Snarl, nor a piece of the Snarl.

Personally, I think the MitD is:

Minya, son of Godzilla!

But that's just me. He fits the description of a monster from the Japanese Rubber Monster Brigade far better than any other monster, he's not protected by the SRD/OGL, and is generic enough that Toho Corporation's copyright lawyers can't really sue either.

But we have to wait until the final chapter before he gets revealed.

Nah, clearly the MitD is:

Flandre Scarlet (http://www.pooshlmer.com/touhouwiki/index.php/Flandre_Scarlet)
She's also U.N. Owen.

I think the :mitd: is related to the dark one. Why would it tag along with :redcloak:? It could probably just kill :xykon: and :redcloak:

SoD
:mitd: tags along with :redcloak: because he stole it from the circus and it's too stupid to kill them and go off somewhere else. It just does what it's told to do. Besides, it was perfectly happy to escape with :redcloak: when he promised to triple it's salary of nothing. :smalltongue:

WOW! A semi-plausable theory! Are there more like you? :smallwink:

I'm so tired of:

It's an intellegent version of Pun-pun! :smallmad:

or

I think it's the Snarl! Why hasn't anyone ever thought of that before? :smallfurious:

The Monster in the Darkness is also pretty dumb, so I think it tags along with Xykon and Redcloak because it can't think of anything better to do.

Yeah maybe its like a plot twist and its actually snarl who hid cleverly at the circus and waited for red cloak.... Or not, he could actually be a retard.

Also from SOD:

Also, in SoD it's stated that the dark one was once a goblin and then ascended to godhood. Whatever the MitD is, it is not a goblin. Therefore no relation.

Barely. Not worth hoping for, but if our writer really wanted that for some reason that is hard to see, it would not be an impossible stretch.

What we know is not encouraging. SoD
We know the MitD is not normally found in jungles, but is a creature that might well be known to the OOTS world writers of MM1-5 [tho it may well be in MM6-10, which sadly will not be written now].
The goblin family likes MitD, which might be kin recognition, but most of us would pet a cat before we would compliment the fellow human down the street.

Now a variant theory would be that the MitD is some sort of failed god, which give the two a sort of divine kinship.

Why would it tag along with ? It could probably just kill
Sod "I guess. If I wanted to be rude about it."

If the :mitd: was related to the Dark One, it would definitely get along better with :redcloak:

He's also mentioned a few times in the comic; maybe you just didn't notice. Redcloak is his high priest.

Warning: Start of Darkness Spoilers

Here's what we learn about the MitD from Start of Darkness: (in no particular order)

People actually have seen the creature
Nobody can tell what the creature is
People were surprised that it could speak common
It was referred to as "It"
It could be contained in a medium-sized box
It isn't aware of ANY of its powers that it's used during the comic
It was previously living in the jungle
Most people vomited after seeing it (not supernaturally, just it was repulsive)

From this we can discern that it's an extremely rare, unidentifiable, hideously ugly, medium or large sized creature that was living in the jungle, though it might not be native there.

That sort of rules out "Piece of Snarl" or "Tarrasque" (unless it's juvenile), but who knows?
