Forest Defense
School [Transmutation]
Level: Druid 5
Components: V, S, M or DF
Casting Time: 1 Standard Action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: 1 tree per 4 caster levels
Duration: 1 hour per level
Saving Throw: No
Spell Resistance: No

You ask the spirits residing within the trees around you to protect you. When you cast this spell 1 tree per 4 caster levels comes under you control and attack those you direct. Directing the trees to attack is a swift action. The trees may make 4 attacks each with a reach of 15 feet. The trees have an attack bonus of +15 and deal 2d8+5/20x2 crushing damage with each hit. The trees are incapable of moving and must be of at least large size.

The trees may be chopped down or destroyed as normal. If a tree is chopped down or otherwise destroyed it stops attacking.

The material component of this spell is found in standard spell pouches.

I would make directing the trees one standard action per tree, but other than that I like it. :smallwink:

Make the material component a piece of a dwarves beard (although that might not be found in a 'standard spell pouch.'

That strikes as more of a component for a fireball spell ¬_¬

I might be willing to agree with a standard action to direct them, change targets, or attack a specific target but I think an action per tree is a bit to slow.

How about a swift action to direct them? Uses up some time but still let's a caster do other things.

it seems odd that wizards and sorcerers have access to this spell.

Just a question, but wouldn't 'ask' be a better wording then force for a druid spell? :smallwink:

Reasonable enough. This comes from my homebrew where there is only one caster class so I just tossed some rough guidelines around it. Druid only is probably a better option.

Not for jerky druids... mmmm jerky druids.

Both points taken and changed.

How is this different from Animate Trees?

I'm guessing you ment Animate Plants (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/animatePlants.htm)

Honestly I'd compleatly forgotten about that spell.

Big diffrence is that Animate Plants would make them into animated objects (and thus moble) while Forest Defense doesn't do so. Forest defense also lasts signifigantly longer (1 hr per lvl vs 1 round per lvl).

Finally trees affected by Forrest defense would be harder to kill (oddly animating the trees removes all hardness) and attack more. The downside being that they are very very easy to escape from.

If you where refering to live oak it's also rather diffrent than that:
Liveoak
Transmutation
Level: Drd 6
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 10 minutes
Range: Touch
Target: Tree touched
Duration: One day/level (D)
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

This spell turns an oak tree into a protector or guardian. The spell can be cast on only a single tree at a time; while liveoak is in effect, you can’t cast it again on another tree. The tree on which the spell is cast must be within 10 feet of your dwelling place, within a place sacred to you, or within 300 feet of something that you wish to guard or protect.

Liveoak must be cast on a healthy, Huge oak. A triggering phrase of up to one word per caster level is placed on the targeted oak. The liveoak spell triggers the tree into animating as a treant.

If liveoak is dispelled, the tree takes root immediately, wherever it happens to be. If released by you, the tree tries to return to its original location before taking root.

Maybe add Plant Domain as someone who could access it?

I like it personally.

Is their a mechanic for allowing clerics with the plant domain to cast it other than to replace one of thier domain spells with it?

I'd not have a problem allowing a player to replace Wall of Thorns or Repel Wood on thier spell list with this.
