I was just thinking, I hope this doesn't sound pretentious, but I don't think I've ever met anyone who moved around as much as I have.

So I therefore announce the beginning of the 1st ever Gypsy Award.

HOW TO PLAY
List all the places you have lived, scoring one point for each
List all the places you have been on holiday, scoring half a point for each.
Add them up, highest scorer wins.
No duplicates or counting locations twice, no matter how many times you have lived there or been on holiday there.

I'll start.

Brisbane, QLD
Maroochydore, QLD
Ferndale, NSW
Murwillumbah, NSW

I've done a lot of moving in the last few years. All about England.

My home town in Peterborough where I'd lived all my life until I was 18.
Then I went to live in Brighton "gay capital of Europe" for uni. Had difficulty meeting girls there.
Then I went to Telford, birthplace of industry for a year.
I spent six months in Birmingham living with 4 nurses.
Then I moved up North to Leeds where everyone's a bit weird.
I've just moved out of that house and I'm moving in with work colleagues around the corner.

Holidays... I once went to South Africa with university. But that wasn't a holiday. I have neve been on holiday, apart from the odd butlins camp with family.

(I've got just time to look through the forum before I set off; I wasn't lying about being away.)

I've lived in one place for the last 20 years, but on the other hand I've done a lot of travelling, so that might make up for it -- (and no, it's not going on holidays every new year, a lot of these are trips I arranged for myself, many of them to meet internet friends) --

Places lived:
Bishop's Stortford, UK
Manchester, UK
Leeds, UK
Eldoret, Kenya (my dad got a job there for 2 years)
Score: 4

Places visited (in no particular order) (excluding UK towns to save time, that would take hours):
Paris, France
Montpellier, France
Frankfurt, Germany
Köln, Germany
Rostock, Germany
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Deventer, Netherlands
Brussels, Belgium
Bruges, Belgium
Antwerp, Belgium
Zurich, Switzerland
Madrid, Spain
Salamanca, Spain
Vienna, Austria
Prague, Czech Republic
Budapest, Hungary

Rättvik, Sweden
Durban, South Africa
Zimbabwe
Mombasa, Kenya
Seoul, South Korea
Tokyo, Japan

San Francisco, California
Score: 14

You're counting living in different places in the same state the same as living in different countries?

You're counting living in different places in the same state the same as living in different countries?

A place is a place.

However, thats just what everyone ele has done - although I do believe I've hit all different states.

Except for some of the places I'm not couting, anyway (some fo the places in Japan are in Kangawa Prefecture, If I remember my geography correctly).

Lived in:
Kaniva, Vic

Armidale, NSW
Tallangatta, Vic
(And Armidale again, but that doesn't count apparently :smalltongue: No, wait! The uni residential colleges have a different post code! Does that count?)

Visited (only counting places where I actually stayed):

Serviceton, Vic.
Crow's Nest, NSW

Sawtell, NSW
South West Rocks, NSW
Kempsey, NSW
Various places in central Australia, notably Adelaide, Alice Springs, Uluru and an opal mining town whose name I've forgotten.
Melbourne, Vic.
Byron Bay, NSW

*sigh* Not all that much range, really. So that's, what? 9 - 10.5 (depending on generosity). I've lived in more houses than I have towns, though.

Now that I think about it - a question.

What about different point systems for living in another country?

And how would one calculate a prolonged period of time underway (In other words - "On a ship in the Pacific Ocean")

It's be hard to judge extra points for living in another country, because that would give an advantage to people in places like Europe, where you can drive for half an hour and be in a new country, while people in places like America or Australia can travel the same distance and be still in the same state. Just count all the towns you have lived in, irrespective of country or state.

I would rate a cruise as a single holiday, no matter how many tiny islands it visited, though I guess you could count actual countries it stopped off at, as long as you got a chance to experience it rather than just sail past/refuel and keep going.

I would count living somewhere for 2 weeks as a holiday - I mean, you still have to live some place, even while on holiday, but you don't get a chance to settle.

EDIT: I would not count places where you only drove through, or stayed at a motel and then continued going, otherwise I would have an impossibly massive list (I had circumnavigated australia twice in a combi by the time I was 9), unless the visit was in some way significant (such as stopping in Paris for a few days while flying to Berlin - not your destination, but a memorable experience).

I do believe the current group leader is Ceres!

Understood completely, I've now updated to add the USS KittyHawk to my "Holiday" list.
By this time next year, I should have a bunch of new places to put up under holiday.
Yay for being highly deployable.

Unless we get Mr Travelling-Businessman or an Astronaut (100 pts for outer space, I do believe the winner is Telonius.

Thank you all for racking your brains to remember all these places. I'm sure it wasn't easy. :O

Damn, I've gotta travel more. My competitive spirit remains intact though, for I believe I have lived more places than most of the score leaders on the board - just haven't been on many holidays. A small victory, but I will take it where I can get it. XD
