I've never trusted it at all — at least not for Japanese — because I know just enough of the language to see how many ways it could get things wrong. And if I had trusted it, I would have stopped the day we used it to translate a Japanese web page about a forthcoming anime.

It took much longer to figure out what the Babelfish translation meant than it did to translate the entire page by hand. It didn't help that the Fish tried to translate all the names.

There may never be a good Japanese-English auto-translator; Japanese is far too dependent on context, and has too many possible and inexact mappings in both directions for any given term, for a machine (which lacks the context) to make sense of it.

Incidentally, reading the Fish's Japanese versions of some of these things, it's a bit odd that it didn't transliterate “Tsukiko” into Kana (ツキコ or つきこ) or even into Kanji (a little tricky since there are at least 6 ways it could be written; the most likely would be 月子 “moon-child”), but left it in Romaji.

But that's the way of the Fish.
