According to the DMG, an NPC class is 3/4 as challenging as a PC class (level -1 is the CR, and 2 lower CR is half the challenge, so 1 lower is 3/4). This seems a little incorrect.

Let's ignore powerful spellcasters here for a minute. In that case, how powerful is an NPC class compared to a PC class? Is 3/4 as powerful appropriate? How about when you add the levels to a monster?

According to the almighty Ess'Ar'De, 2 NPC class levels= a +1 CR increase.

by RAW a 10th level comoner has the same CR as a 10th level warrior. But RAW is silly.

Well, yeah. Of course RAW is silly. Thus my questions. How does everyone else do it?

Commoners, 1/4 and warriors 1/2.

Just for a minute, I'd like to point out that a 20th level PC class is not CR 20 either. One needs only to compare statistics with a CR 20 monster for that. Hence, a Warrior 20 being CR 19 is rather absurd as well.
