View Full Version : Fun words?

Tarnag40k

Anyone find any words that are fun to just say?

I know it may sound wierd but I think there is enough of us that are insane enough to know what I mean.

Personally I find words like Dirka, Banjo, Raa, Nar, fun.

Happenstance. Cellardoor. Slug. Ceddar. Cinnamon. One could make a pretty decent poem like this.

I've always found 'box' to be fun. Box, bawks, bocz, bauqs....

And 'haberdasher'. Archaic terminology FTW.

zilch. "Park the car in Harvard yard" with a Boston accent (which my grampa has so we always make him say it).

Another cruel irony is the word "lisp". I acquired one briefly when I had my wisdom teeth out, and did you notice that people with one can't say it?

Photoatomic transomgobulating yectofantriplutonic zanziptomizer.
So what if I read Captain Underpants?

None of those are regular in my vocabulary. These are (mostly because I love saying them):

ergo
superfluous
facetious
Pharisaical
harass (I love alternating between hair-ess and har-ass just to make people wonder)
dispensation
conglomerate
fictictious
anthropomorphic
transcendental
lyrical
ginormous
concomitantly
alliteration
vicarious
molasses

The last because it sounds JUST like what it describes.

...I think I have a fondness for big words.

Hmmm...In my youth, we would often use words improperly, especially when contenmplating bad pickup lines. "Hey, baby. You're looking struthious. Wanna absquatulate with me?" That I've told the girl she looks ostrich-like and asked her to decamp with me means little, compared to that odd look you get using such words.

Yeah, I was already aware of that one, Attilargh.

Yup'ik words, but where I grew up in Alaska, everyone used them. Everyone. If you live in southwest AK and don't know the words after a couple of weeks, you're generally considered "slow".
Akutak: (ah-koo-tuck) berries mixed with crisco/lard and sugar
Waqaa: (wuh-Kah) "What's up?"
Kayak: (Really, do you NOT know this word?)
Ikiituk (vaguely like icky-took): a kind of wild celery, to this day I cannot remember the English word for the plant, but I know it has one.
Maqui'i: (very gutteral 'muh-khey'. If your throat hurts after saying it, you probably said it right.) Steam bath, sauna.
Mukluk: (muck-luck) a type of footwear

And words we (mostly) know:
Caustic
Acerbic
Scintillating (my personal favorite)
Scree
Ablution
Doodle
Halibut
Bruschetta (though I'm sure I say it wrong)
Frictative
splatter, smack, whack
Onomatopoeia

Would you look at that, it is actually a word in some languages. As far as me and my friends go, it's a corruption of "sex", and is generally used as "seksi" (sexy). Most common way to use it is "That's a seksi x", where x is an article of clothing. The gag is that we're talking over IM, and can't see each other.

Waxing and waning moon, oblivious,
as scorching sentries stroll,
along silken shores.
Macabre waltzes,
floating, soaring
to a Lovecraftian cacophony,
a transcendental brouhaha,
bellowing drums in the deep.
Lone nightwatchmen,
blades jagged and notched,
dash down flight after flight,
fluttering, as if in flight.
Apocalypse is nigh,
convergence of the stratosphere,
in one dazzling blow.
Nightwatchmen stumble,
blatantly blunder,
thud down treads.
Cellardoor.
Cedar.
Cinnamon.
Clash.
Horrors whacked.
Antidisestablishmentarian demons doomed.
Dread Gazebo smacked.
Cth'ulhu thwarted.
Silence now. Sanity, at last.

There, the poem I felt compelled to write. It's not very good, as it's largely improvisional, and I forced myself not to use "the" too much because I have a strong dislike of that word, and in a poem with "pretty words" you're just not allowed to use those. I also tried to avoid using large quantities of non-pretty words.

So, is it spiffy?

That's exactly what it means in my language.

Oh, and thanks Dragonrider

OK, this is mine:

“Veni, vidi, vici”
Alliteratively Caesar proclaims
O Julius! Your transcendental stratagem
Your modus operandi
Your vociferous ensconcement
Is lyrical to us all
With great finesse
Staring down your aquiline nose
Articulating your archaic dispensation
We feel superfluous
In the face of your draconian ego
Living vicariously
Through your placebo
The scintillating facsimile
Sequestered, clandestine

“I came, I saw, I conquered”
Eternally Caesar declares
Above the cacophony
Of we sordid Anglo-Saxon masses
Supplicating him
Vehemence in their limpid eyes
With supreme disdain
He does not acquiesce
Slow as molasses
Citing the precedent
Of the aforementioned motive
His seething soliloquy
Ardently made
Does not capitulate
Acerbic through eons of schisms and scree

Now Caesar’s sepulcher
Stands degenerate and contrite
Before the syphilis that once harassed
A macabre convergence
Of weird and world—
Anthropomorphically intact
To stand before the great conglomerate
Yet concomitantly
Your appellation to all eternity
Will not be forgot
Convoluted though it seems
To the naked eye
Embittered though we be
Turgid, torrid, and forlorn—
“Veni, vidi, vici”

Ummmm...I'm not sure what it means.
It has too many syllables.
But I find myself rather fond of it.

I say this word a couple times a day, and it's Italian, but salve and I say Casa now and then. And, of course, scusi. I can't believe I forgot about them in my earlier list. It completely didn't occur to me to use my three most-used words from my own language! I love those little words that I owe so much to. Think about it. How well could you people get on without the words "the" and "hello"? Not very well, I expect.
