So, I've exhausted my CD collection. I've bought new ones. I've downloaded off Zune Marketplace. But I admit, despite my eclectic tastes, I'm out of music. Based on your current playlist...

Get yourself some Caroline's Spine. I also note an acute Foo Fighters deficiency in your collection.

While it's somewhat ecclectic, I notice a distinct lack of estrogen among your lead singers.

Falling on your like for metal mixed with ecclectic tastes in general, I'd like to introduce you to Epica.

If you want to expand your tastes in heavy metal then listen to these bands:

Megadeth
Manowar
Iced Earth
Blind Guardian
Avantasia (especially recommended)
Dream Theater
Children of Bodom
Dragonforce
Slayer
Slipknot

Good ones: Iggy pop, Pink floyd, genesis. also consider getting Joan jett's I love rock 'n roll, poison's unskinny bop, The Ramones blietzkrieg bop and I wanna be sedated...

And of course, GET This Is spinal Tap: The soundtrack. And get the movie, too.

I notice a distinct lack of ska in this list. I'd strongly recommend (or to anyone, really) The following: Reel Big Fish, Streetlight Manifesto, Suburban Legends, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Planet Smashers and Catch 22. Out of all of those bands I can guarantee you'll like one of them.

Seeing as how you have Linkin Park-
Try My Chemical Romance, they are a bit different, but their music is inspired mostly by Linkin Park according to some interviews.

Also Flyleaf is really good, and there seems to be no Poison on your playlist...

Thanks for the ideas. I also do own Dragonforce, but i accidentally skipped over it when typing.

Foo Fighter: I don't hate them, but I probably wouldn't shell out 15 dollars for their CD.

Epica: Zune Marketplace doesn't have their music. I'll keep an eye out at the record store.

Blind Guardian: Zune Marketplace doesn't have the Soulforge. I'll keep an eye out.

Got some Megadeth. Got some Pink Floyd. Got This is Spinal Tap. (Love the movie)

Not a fan of Ska. Reel Big Fish is alright, but I don't think I'll get them.

@^ MCR=Awful. I only have 1 Linkin Park song, and I'm not a fan of the emo/alt genre much. Poison isn't my style. Flyleaf, maybe.

I've been thinking about getting Heart. Opinions?

Because you like Alice in Chains:
Candlebox

Rock (Mixed with prog rock, alt, and glam, because I don't care):
The Cult (Give a listen to the album "Sonic Temple")
David Bowie (Give a listen to the "Ziggy Stardust Album")
The Doors
Jane's Addiction (give a listen to the "Nothing's Shocking", "Ritual de lo Habitual", and the "Self-titled")
Pink Floyd
Pixies
Queen
Rage Against the Machine
The Smiths
Stone Temple Pilots (“Core”)
Velvet Underground
Violent Femmes
King Crimson (“The Court of the Crimson King”)
Morrissey
Styx

More "metal" ("metal head" above me listed some good ones so I'll ignore those for my list) (also, I don't go in for the whole separation of genres too much so I'll have a mix of styles):
Godsmack
Motley Crue
Celtic Frost
Tool
A Perfect Circle
Edit: Oh, and Pantera
Ok, most of those are in a disorganized mess, but the ones above me are based the list you provided. I don’t care if X isn’t metal or Y isn’t rock. Those that I’m going to list below are from left field. You may like them, you might not, but we’re here to broaden horizons, right?

Scissor Sisters, The Cure (Disintegration and Pornography are both gold), Depeche Mode, Joy Division, K.M.F.D.M., Love and Rockets, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, White Zombie, and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

I could list more, but those are tame comparatively. Some of it is an acquired taste, which means one must convince oneself that it doesn’t suck.

(I would recommend using Last.fm when browsing for music. Just about every semi-popular band has 30 second teaser tracks)

Good music. I'd get it. Thought of new ones: Wolfmother, steppenwolf, and wolfsbanes, which share the wolf bit, but are pretty different, steppenwolf being a favorite. Another good one is Pantera, and you should get a good version of Peter Gunn.

Nine Inch Nails is on my "to-buy" list, so that's covered. David Bowie, absolutly. My mom has a Queen album, I'll look into them. Rage and STP both possible. Hate Velvet Underground.

Queen. At the very least for "A Night at the Opera"

Grateful Dead. They're hit or miss. Find a free song and see if you like them.

Phish, or Phish covers. You'll like something from them, and just looking at their covers list is a pretty easy way to find good songs.

The Pixies are pretty good. Excellent lyrics and a spiffy, good ol' musical score with it.

Fatboy Slim, another a bit more hit or miss. Test them out beforehand.

Muse I'm just getting into, and they're pretty good. Though they get a little repetitive, it's a nice touch.

I HIGHLY recommend The Doors for Jim Morison's lyrical brilliance brought to life by three amazing musicians.

I highly support Blue Oyster Cult, good choice.

REM can be amazing as well, but again, a bit more hit or miss.

Modest Mouse too.

Jethro Tull, to round out some more older rock of awesome.

The Monkees, if only for the Lulz.

Get Light my fire, LA woman, and The End. Probably the best, and there's no contest for the first two.

When you get the money, try to get their album, from their eponymous first album to The Soft Parade. Listening to them all in a row is one of the best musical experiences you can really hear, full of all the ups and downs, and I personally think tells a better story them most would think.

Break on Through is an amazing single song. My brain is exploding right now. What's the Doors song that's "Riders on the storm" ? I think that's it.

Also, Portal is awesome. Find a place to get Still Alive if you can. Should be easy to find online.

Only in Russian, though. If this bothers you, learn Russian. :smallmad: Or look up the translation of lyrics. (http://russmus.net) Or just listen to Korol' i Shut (http://youtube.com/watch?v=zNQ3rndWjjI)/Король и Шут (http://youtube.com/watch?v=kWgSa-9LTzo): the lyrics are stupid but if you don't know Russian they can't bother you.

(In case you are wondering why people are smoking in every one of those videos: The definition of a Russian is a being that goes around on two legs and smokes so much.)

Also, you like Patti Smith and the group Television, right?

I'm currently listening to Peter Gabriel ("Digging In The Dirt," specifically) and am once again reminded that he is, in fact, a god.

Going by what you listen to:

If you're looking for something AC/DC-esque, definitely give Krokus (http://krokusonline.seven49.net/) a try. My initial tohught on first hearing them at a gig was "Dubya Tee Eff, Bon Scott's alive after all? :smalleek: "

I'm not really sure what Black Sabbath you prefer. If you mean Ozzy era, you might want to give Hellfueled a try, a rather Ozzyesque band. If Dio era, well, I don't think I really have to point out that Mr Ronnie James Dio's solo band (http://www.myspace.com/dioofficial) is a must-have, especially his 80s works. I'm trying to think of something to match Martin era, but the closest I can think of is Metal Church's "Hanging in the Balance" album (has an intentionally horrid cover, look past it, the music is wonderful).

For something Deep Purple-y, I would recommend our dear Brits from Demon (http://metal-archives.com/band.php?id=575), a somewhat obscure NWOBHM band. I can particularly recommend Taking the World By Storm and The Unexpected Guest.

Iron Maiden inevitably leads to my signature. Pharaoh for the win squared.

For something influenced by Judas Priest - well, you could listen to any metal band ever :smalltongue: but I'll just throw a bit of Custard (http://www.custard.de/) your way, helluva fun band

When you're already with Rush, Dream Theater oughta be down your alley. Images and Words is a perfect way to start off. For a really obscure and psychedelic choice, the very first album of Manilla Road (titled "Invasion") always sounded to me like the result of 70s Rush meeting several gigatons of weed.

There, oughta get you started with that

Agreed. Avantasia is what got me into metal in the first place. I also enjoy Dragonforce and Nightwish. I prefer Nightwish's original vocalist, though both of them are pretty good.

Seeing as you are the beatles fan of the forum I'd have to suggest the Pixies. They were at the head of the grunge influence, Nirvana cited them as their main source of inspiration, and the pixies drew heavily from the beatles.

You could also try the Dead Kennedy's, I've always been a HUGE fan of Biafra's work.

The Aquabats are really good, they gave me a begrudging respect for Ska.

Rise Against is good for new punk, although I find them to be a bit preachy.

Queens of the Stone age are really good, their new album was incredible.

Mastodon's album Blood Mountain is definantly worth a buy, I went to see them live, and being the goober I am I bought a shirt before seeing them. It was the coolest band shirt I've ever seen, a werewolf tending to a pack of wolves with his arms outstretched. So naturally I hoped I would enjoy the band, and sure enough they played one of the best live acts I've ever seen.

Lamb of God is really good if you can get past the vocals, some people are turned off by the "metal scream," but as far as bands go they mesh really well and are extremely talented musicians.

Primus is a cool bamd if you like your music weird. They have Les Claypool on lead bass and produce some of the most original mainstream music I've ever heard.

Perhaps you'd enjoy Nile, an egyptian themed technical death metal band. They have a crazy drummer.

And the final suggestion, the "Dethalbum" by "Dethklok." The music on the CD is fantastic, the majority of the songs are expanded versions of the songs from the TV show. It was a happy surprise for me.

Protomen :smallcool:

The Protomen (http://www.myspace.com/theprotomen). A very musically and lyrically talented band. They have one CD so far, which is a self-titled rock opera inspired by the Mega Man games. It tells the story of a dystopian world, an Orwellian nightmare ruled by Dr. Wily and his army of ever-watchful robots. Protoman, the first son of Dr. Light, tries and fails to defeat that army. Then, years later, his newly-created brother Mega Man sets out on a quest to save the world and avenge his brother's death.

Now, I know what many of you are probably thinking. "Ew, rock operas." I thought the same thing when I heard about them. I gave them a listen, liked them, then eventually got around to buying their album. This one really works.

It is some seriously amazing stuff. The tracks vary from powerful slow-ish rock, to somber introspective tunes, to fast-paced battle music. The CD even comes with liner notes that (gasp!) actually have stuff besides the lyrics pasted in. Reading them while listening made the experience even more awesome.

Plus, they perform in full costume, with visored helmets, uniforms, and arm cannons.

Four thumbs up from random internet guy.

Thin Lizzy (Iron Maiden were inspired by them)

Queensryche (Dream Theatre are inspired by them)

Alright. Updates. I dug through my dad's CDs, and I think I'm set for now (altough I still need NIN and some Bon Jovi.) Also my mom took the Queen CD out of town, so I'll add that Sunday-Monday.

Here's the entire list of recent additions to my music.

ABBA (Now my "guilty pleasure", as I'm the only guy I know who likes them. Luckily, my mom has their greatest hits. 19 songs!)
Cream (I had some Clapton stuff with Cream, but now I have stuff by them from their CDs)
David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust!)
The Doors
Flyleaf
The Killers
Megadeth
Pink Floyd
Spinal Tap (Darn software! Not having a umlated n!)
Stone Temple Pilots

And I increased my library on these artists.
Black Sabbath
Led Zeppelin
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Ozzy Osbourne
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Van Halen

Based on your playlist, we have very similar tastes. As such, I notice a distinct lack of Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen in your collection. I suggest you remedy this a.s.a.p.

Since they both have such a lot of material, and Dylan has changed his sound quite a bit over the years, I'd suggest either getting a best of album (Dylan has like 12 of them, with much overlap) or googling what songs are on their best ofs and downloading those.

I cannot stress how much your collection needs those two men on it :smallwink:

I actually have heard a little of Gaelic Storm, and I wasn't very impressed. Maybe it was just the songs, though.
I love "Be With You" by the Bangles, and "Walk Like an Egyptian" isn't that shabby either.
Never heard of Toto Coleo.
ABBA is a beautiful band.
Pink Floyd is pretty good.
Every single one of the bands you increased your library on is amazing.
And may I suggest "Cliffs of Dover" by Eric Johnson?
Sting is pretty good as well.

Never heard of Toto Coleo.

Yeah, it may depend. Did you listen off of specific albums, or just random songs?

The Bangles are pretty good, although I don't listen to them too often.

Toto Coleo had such great hits as "I Eat Cannibal" and "Milk from the Coconut." I really don't seriously recommend them unless you really like 80s pop, but if you feel the need to, you can search for their videos online. They're not on Youtube that I know of, but try Google Video, Veoh, and Dailymotion.

And may I suggest "Cliffs of Dover" by Eric Johnson?

Desert Rose (http://youtube.com/watch?v=NnzO3OB0A5A) is better...although I actually have yet to find an Eric Johnson song that isn't good.

Hm. Can't really find any Pogues, Dropkick Murphy's or even Thin Lizzy on Raistlin's list. so either, he looks at those bands, too, or he won't really like Flogging Molly.:smallamused:

As for Progressive Metal, i can just second Dream Theater. Though i would go straight for the "Scenes from a Memory"-Album.

Also, i there's a certain lack of Tool on that list.

for a few suggestions that not everybody knows: Serenity (http://www.serenity-band.com/templates/index.htm), an Austrian Prog Power Band.

Also more acceptable bands I shall recommend. Simply because I've been listening to them and they are awesome.

The Who - Good, more old school rock that just has an amazing flow to it.

Muse - New Stuff, kinda out there, and I may have mentioned it before.

R.E.M. - Hit or Miss. Generally if you like Modest Mouse I've found that REM will also sit well with you.

Bruce Springsteen - American awesome.

Rolling Stones - Maybe not all of them, but there's probably at least one CD of their's that you would like. they been around forever.

The Ink Spots - Because I'm covering ALL genres that I love. They're an old school black singing group. Awesome, but hard to find.

Led Zepplin - Studio albums only. No offense, but they aren't that good live, but they EARNED their legendary status.

Voltaire - Dark, cynical, gothy, amusing music. With such hits as "Zombie Prostitute" and "Brains!"

Wolf Parade - Yet another oddball, but I happen to love them as well. Another band that is in the same vein as REM and Modest Mouse.

Temple of the Dog - Again, related to Modest Mouse.

Jethro Tull - Yay Flute and amazing music. Aqualung might be my most favorite-est song ever.

Sorry if I repeated any.

Stuff that's already come up that I'd agree with a lot:
Queens of the Stone Age - kind of like classic rock but somehow modern. Check out the first couple of albums or related bands / projects like Kyuss or the Deert Sessions

Velvet Underground - when rock and roll first met Art, absolutely classic stuff. The Velvet Underground and Nico is totally essential imo.

Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde, Freewheeling and Blood on the Tracks are maybe the best to start off with. He is totally fantastic.

Iggy Pop / The Stooges - classic raw rock and roll stuff. I'd recommend starting with Raw Power.

Other than that, if you like the 60's mod / beat stuff and blues rock, you might like to go back to the source and check out some old blues, soul and funk. I'm not the most knowledgeable person on that sort of stuff, but you should be good with Marvin Gaye - What's Going On and general Stax / Motown stuff (compilations are probably as good as artist albums here) for soul, or Robert Johnson, BB King, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry for blues / rhythm and blues / rock and roll.

It's good, they just have a bunch of better songs. New Year's Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday, One, Yahweh, Beautiful Day, just to name a few.

U2 is taken as a postulate. :smallwink: The Joshua Tree is brilliance the likes of which we see once every 10 years or so - and their other stuff ain't too shabby either.

I'm not a huge fan of their stuff post 1998 or so, but even that is better than 90% of what's produced.

Queen. Amazing band. Highly recommended.
I listened to a couple of Gaelic Storm's random songs. I think it was probably just the songs that I chose, now that I think about it, though.
Desert Rose was good, but I think I still prefer Cliffs of Dover.

hmm, well then I might have to reccomend a few of my favorites.

Johnny Tarr, Beggarman, Johnny Jump Up, Rocky Road to Dublin, The Storm, Bare in the Basin, Devil Down Below, Scalliwag, Bonny Ship The Diamond.

...ok, I actually think most of Special Reserve, Bring Your Wellies, and Gaelic Storm are really good.

If you like Gaelic Storm, I recommend checking out Great Big Sea (http://www.greatbigsea.com), a folk band from Newfoundland. I especially recommend The Hard and the Easy and Rant and Roar as good albums to look into.

Try Smashing Pumpkins. Muchly favoured by college students inparticular for some strange reason.
Also, if you like Deep Purple, try Rainbow.
I second the person who said Spinal Tap.

Noone's Mentioned or recommended Clutch yet...

A few videos:

Electric Worry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ab6lr2b66Ig)

The Mob Goes Wild (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z78PjvfCVTQ)

Burning Beard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s7P6s0YXGk)

They have some seriously must-get albums. The best way to describe Clutch is basically "Hard Blues Rock". The albums I suggest out of their impressive discography are Beale Street & Oblivion, Robot Hive/Exodus, Blast Tyrant, Pure Rock Fury, and my personal favourite (for both song, and album cover!) Elephant Riders. Since you're fan of some great rock bands, check these guys out sometime, they'll surprise you.

Their songs are somewhat akin to Led Zeppelin in terms of style, or at least out the current list of bands you have given us, this is the closest I can think of to Clutch's sound, and their lead singer, Neil Fallon has the most impressive baritone vocals I have heard outside of death-grunt metal bands.

I suggest avoiding their first album, Transnational Speedway League, as they started off closer to hardcore punk/metal with Neil trying to do the whole "metal growl", and wow, let's just say blackboard scratching is a bit more appealing.

EDIT: I forgot to mention a few specific songs.

I'll list a nice heap, so even if you run across one or two, you'll recognise them by chance :D. Songs to check out if you ever get the chance are 10,000 Witnesses, Elephant Riders, Ship of Gold, Dragonfly, Drink to the Dead (personal favourite), The Yeti, American Sleep, Red Horse Rainbows, Mice & Gods, Gravel Road (cover of a song by Mississippi Fred McDowell), The Regulator, (in the wake of) The Swollen Goat (Pirate Rock ftw!), Opossum Minister, Black Umbrella, and The Devil & Me

Or, just check out the vids I posted as well, either way, I hope you enjoy :D

Radiohead?

Probably not your taste though xD.

If I had to suggest some Radiohead it would be The Bends, OK Computer, In Rainbows, and (depending on how much you can stand IDM) Kid A.

Smashing Pumpkins are great. At least the first three albums are.

Gish, Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie: And the Infinite Sadness.

Anything beyond that is a bit lackluster.

Ummm.. lets see.

Janes Addiction (if you like RHCP).

All of the early grunge bands are great. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Temple of The Dog, Alice in Chains, Green River, Mudhoney.

The Melvins and Meat Puppets are some good semi punk bands. They are punk but experiment much more then others. Melvins could be considered the fathers of grunge and Meat Puppets lies some where between Psychodelic Country Punk.

Dead Kennedys play some good punk but i'm notreally too big on that whole genre myself. Buzzcocks, Sex Pistols, The Clash... all of the early punk.

The Who is amazing and if you wanna get into them get Live at Leeds first. By far the best live album ever recorded.

QOTSA is an amazing band. Sorta like the Back Sabbath of our generatin. A lot of grinding repetitive riffs that sound great.

REM can be good depending on what ya get. I would suggest Monster since it is a bit more rocking.

Led Zeppelin is a must. Led Zeppelin I-II are the hardest if them all. III is a bit more folky but it has Since I've Been Loving You (best Zeppelin song btw). IV is the cliche' zeppelin album since it has Rock And Roll and Stairway to Heaven. It's still great.

Houses of The Holy is another great one..they experiment a bit more on it but The Song Remains The Same and No Quarter are great.

Physical Graffitti is their best album by far. Get that first.

Presence is decent but not grat and In Through The Outdoor kinda sucks. However Fool in The Rain has an amazing drum shuffle (for those aspiring drummers out there listen to that song).

Zeppelin's live albums suck but they were by no means a bad live band. Watch the Led Zeppelin DVD (actual title) and you will suprised how good they are live.

If your into jazz you can't go wrong with Elvin Jones (best drummer EVAR!!! btw).

Queen is a great band but not for thier albums (with the exception of A Night at The Opera and Sheer Heart Attack). Queen is basically a singles band. Amazing singles but just decent albums.

Ughhh.. lets see..

White Zombie, Primus, Adiosalve, Beck, Derek and The Dominos, Elton John, NIN, Pink Floyd, Rage Against The Machine, Santana, Soundgarden, STP, The Animals, The Doors, The Police, Tool, Van Morrison, Violent Femmes...I could go on...

Just stay away from anything newiah. Greenday, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance...

All a bunch of ****. (pardon my language).

I know this has been said many times, but it can't be stressed enough: Queen is awesome and absolutely vital.
So is Pink Floyd.

You have DragonForce on there, so I'd suggest Rhapsody of Fire (they were known as Rhapsody till fairly recently, so most of their albums are released under that name) and Hammerfall.
Apocalyptica is quite interesting; it's a metal band consisting of three cellists and a drummer.

Also: Camel and Jethro Tull for progressive rock. Arcade Fire for alternative.'

In an act of patriotism, I'll also recommend two Danish bands (if you can find them; not sure about the availability of them): Kashmir and Dizzy Mizz Lizzy.

Finally: Tommy Emmanuel (in my opinion the best guitarist in the world) and Mannfred Mann's Earth Band.

I'm assuming Hard Rock/Metal is mainly what you are after here, so:

The Scorpions
Twisted Sister
The Vincent Black Shadow
Ash
Billy Idol
Europe
Thunder
Phantom Blue
Vixen
Rammstein
Transvision Vamp
The Sounds
Sonata Arctica

Apologies for any duplicates :)

Yeah. Most bands with female singers (at least that I've heard) either aren't my style, or try to overcompensate for not having a rock n' roll voice by screaming their lungs out.

Seeing as how you have Linkin Park-
Try My Chemical Romance, they are a bit different, but their music is inspired mostly by Linkin Park according to some interviews.

NO. Just...no.

This is like saying that Custer's Revenge was inspired mostly by System Shock 2. You definetely need to get your music info from other places, man. :smallwink:

Anyway, I suggest you pick up Linkin Park's newest album, which is a lot like some of the other bands you listed and not much like their previous work. Also, I second whoever said you should listen to Dream Theater; you have similar music tastes to me and Dream Theater is probably my favorite band

I've been thinking about getting Heart. Opinions?
Crazy On You and Magic Man are pretty good, and Straight On is OK. Barracuda is OK, too, but it's kind of a rip-off of Achilles Last Stand by Zeppelin. I guess it depends on whether you like 3-minute songs or 10-minute songs as to which is better.

I'd pick Sleater-Kinney over Heart in a heartbeat, so to speak, if you are looking hard-rockin' femmes. I don't really have any singles' recommendations, though, as I tend to listen to complete albums of theirs in one sitting. Maybe Buy Her Candy... All Hands On The Bad One and Dig Me Out are really good albums, and One Beat and The Hard Rock are solid as well.

Amazingly, Genesis' Foxtrot and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway haven't come up. Some might disagree, but the amazing feeling of listening to the whole 'Trot in one sitting (That most Greatest hits albums exclude Time Table is a crime), and the sheer epicness of starting and ending the Lamb With the track of the same name is something few bands can cause.

Also, did someone recommend David Bowie's Ziggy stardust or are we missing it?

lolz on My Chem...that band is everything wrong with the music scene...

I wouldn't even suggest Linkin Park anyways (if it is on my list I apologize. It's from my Myspace page and I haven't touched that in months and I have outgrown most of the bad influences since then).

CRAAAAAAAWWWWLLLIIINNNGGG IIIINNNNN MIIIIIIII SKKKIIIIINNNN THEEESSSEEE WOOOUUNNNDDDSSS THEEEYYYY WIIILLLLL NOOOT HEEEALLL!

/wrist.

Yeah Heart isn't really that great. THey have some good rock songs but not a bunch.

And I second (or third) the Bob Dylan recommendation. Can't beat his originality and just the pure catchyness of most of his tunes. Queen Jane Approximately and Subbteranean Homesick Blues are both really great. Theres another i'm missing but I can't remember the name (it is an obscure Dylan song I know that much).

And again I put my vote in for Radiohead. Not the Creep stuff but everything after is amazing.

The Bends kinda sounds like Coldplay (since the album did influence Coldplay's sound) except there is alot of more rocking songs. OK Computer is an amazing album...it sounds like somewhere between classic and futuristic rock. It's hard to explain but it does have some great songs (Airbag, Paranoid Android, Lucky, Exit Music For A Film, No Suprises, Karma Police, Climding Up The Walls, and a few others). Kid A is when they experiement with Jazz,Ambient, and IDM. It is a really interesting album though and much more interesting then straight up IDM (like Aphex Twin or Squarepusher).

Some of the great Kid A songs are Kid A, The National Anthem, Motion Picture Soundtrack, Morning Bell, Idioteque, In Limbo, and some others...

Amnesiac is basically the same album (since all of the tracks were made at the same time) but it has some really great songs as well (and it is more jazz based). Knives Out, Life In A Glasshouse, Amnesiac/Morning Bell, Pyramid Song, You And Who's Army, and I Might Be Wrong are great.

Hail To The Thief is an okay album. There are some good songs but not real great ones.

And In Rainbows is definately worth getting. It has almost no IDM influences and is a sort of mellow album.

Sorry for pushing Radiohead on you. xD

To all future recommenders: I. Hate. Bob. Dylan. His voice is awful. When other people cover his stuff (Guns N' Roses, Jimi Hendrix), it's great, but his voice is terrible. He is a much better songwriter than he is a singer.

His voice is perfectly flawed. It's a Kurt Cobain kinda thing.

Jimi's cover of Dylan doesn't even sound like a Dylan song so I don't even know if that counts as a cover. I mean it is a cover but it sounds nothing like the actual song.

But we all can't be MCcartney and Lennons when it comes to perfect harmonized voals.

That's the point of a cover. You bring something new to a song.

I would go so far as someone trying to imitate the original song as NOT covering it.

Felizginato12
2008-01-26, 08:03 PM
Yes but most covers are basically a ****ty version of the original. Very few covers sound completely different and even better then the original. For instance The Man Who Sold the World in my opinion was better when done by Nirvana.

The rift seems to have been slowed down and seems like less of a drone. The song also has a sort of mellow feeling to it.

In jimi's case his cover sounds as if he wrote the song which is a rarity umongst cover songs.

Really, I know a lot of covers that are much better. Maybe you're just not looking hard enough.

"Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm
"Caught a Lite Sneeze" by Evans Blue (and arguably "Possession")
"Umbrella" by illScarlet
"Baby Got Back" by Jonathan Coulton

All better than original, and all bring something great and new to it.
