I've been DMing for a while though I have never run a ful campaign due to our group's short attention span. When I use NPCs as villains I used to build them as PCs. To my suprise, last week I was looking through the DM's guide and saw that NPCs have different gear values than PCs. I was wondering what CR adjustment I should give my NPCs should I choose to give them PC gear and a bit of optimization.
Advice?

It's really up to you. All CR does is act as a guideline and determines EXP. If you want to challenge your players without having them level up too fast, don't adjust it at all, but keep in mind that they won't be able to take as many encounters per day. If you want to award them more EXP, bump the CR one up, or simply multiply the EXP by 1.5 or whatever feels right.

The biggest problem you'll have is giving the PCs more wealth (unless most of the NPC gear is single use items, which they used before or during the fight [especially tomes]), which will make them more powerful.

Or have the NPC escape I just realized. Thanks though.
