Maybe he just *really* wanted to get his hands on the OotS book and decided to go straight to the source?

I for one think that this new strip--destined to be known as "Strip #144.5" or simply "Rich Got Held Up"--is among the worst the site has ever put up. There's no continuity with the series, for one; where are all of the old OotS characters? Are we now to assume that their existance relies on this mysterious "Rich" creature? Can we truly assume that an erratic personality like Belkar would be held up in the absence of this "Rich," or would he soldier on like the neurotic halfling that he is?

I normally like Giant's stuff, but this new strip just doesn't make sense. Perhaps it's just because it's a guest strip, but if this is the direction OotS is going, then I don't want to think about the future. Fifteen comics down the road, when you all are looking at strips bearing such terrifying epitaphs as "Rich is having lunch right now. No OotS until Thursday," or "Rich believes that tariff-free trade is the key to a truly open and successful world marketplace," you'll know that I'm right.

So, I have returned.

I went to Winter Fantasy this weekend, which was great and I will discuss at length later. Getting back turned into something of an ordeal. Suffice to say, doctors were involved. Anyway, I am back now. I had made a crayon drawing to use as a placeholder while I work on the new strip, but I can't find it in my 6.02 x 1023 pieces of luggage. So you'll have to wait until I'm done with the new strip.

Actually, I think this is a marvelous strip. The minimalist technique employed by Rich goes to an even more basic level of thought than the stock figures that usually adorn the canvas do. Additionally, I must applaud Rich for having the introspective awareness to be able to bare his own soul, his innermost thoughts if you will, in such a way that they touch us all. And to be able to do so without compromising the minimalist nature of the work, well, I for one say Bravo, Rich! Bravo!

I have few friends who are doing Pirates at the Y or their health club. I guess it makes sense that there would be different styles of Pirates, but I have never heard of the Drow Ninja method. Sounds painful. But then again, no pain, no gain, eh?

Yes, but one must wonder if it's truly in Giant's best interest to toy with his canon at this point. We are hot off the heels of the introduction of an Order of the Stick book--a financial endeavor that has, thus far, proven at least somewhat fruitful. His growing celebrity among the webcomic community is not yet sufficient to warrant such experimentation; this is a time in his career when, I believe, he should stick to his guns, continuing to explore the characters he has already created. They are at the backbone of his fame, and as such, they are what he needs right now.

Perhaps down the road--before his peers and counterparts baring their claws and flashing accusations of "one-trick pony," we will see Rich Burlew, Minimalist, explored in a greater context. RawBear has provided an opening for just such an occasion, but such an opening seems to come with too much haste.

It was a bit disconcerting, but probably in the long run, not a bad idea to see a guest cartoonist in the space. However, I for one would have preferred the submission as a adjunct rather than a replacement. And as a piece of art, it certainly did evoke some good reaction. I particularly liked the way it broke the 4th wall in some novel ways.

Maybe next we can see what Keith would do?

I have to agree with Sir Oz. While the characters in Order of the Stick have always been drawn in a simplistic manner--indeed, that is a large part the strip's charm--replacing the well-known, almost iconic figures of the cast at this late date with these gangly, letter-like images doesn't do much for the strip's portrayal of action and character. Rich's color pallat has always been broad and eye-catching; this switch to a bi-chromatic format seems like a step down in the art department.

Also, I'm having trouble understanding how this fits in with the current plot. Is that beige background the Wooden Forest? Is this somehow a step towards the starmetal ore, or is it another glance at the Linear Guild? I have to say, not to sound overly critical, but I hope Rich strongly considers leaving this strip out of the next book.

Also: Gnome-Mount, what is this chemistry class of which you speak? Those of us with Liberal Arts degrees know of no such thing. Do you mean to say that one might take classes in subjects that actually have some bearing on the actual world? What a concept... :o

I do believe that the linear and round characters in yesterday's comic represent the duality expressed within the Order of the Stick. By juxtaposing the two, Rich has clearly illustrated that while our adventurers are important, this other side must be truly explored in order for the comic to make sense.

metaofantioch
2005-02-02, 02:50 AM
Of course! These 'lines' and 'circles' represent the primal forces that make up the very world behind OotS. This latest comic represents an abstract look into the essence of the prime plane, or perhaps the very forces behind arcane magic. Indeed, this could be the beginning of some sinister plotline in which the Order discovers the illustrated nature of their existence.

GI Joe was awesome back than. They always used to have that semi-commercial with the kids and the saying, "Knowing if half the battle."

Maybe they will show Link (back when he had that sword that shot out stuff like Link's Adventure). I loved that cartoon. Only on Fridays though.

Each party has one encounter(and only one) because random encounters are tedious and a waste of everyone's valuable time.

Ye gods... I wish you could convince MY DM of that... But no... every hour we travel, there's a roll for a possible random encounter. A high CR random encounter, too. And he wonders why so many of our parties get wiped out before we accomplish anything... *mutters under his breath*

Wow.. I really hope you are travelling in some really really dangerous areas then, akin to Mordor at the peak of the war or such.. Otherwise that is a really silly rule imo. Imagine all the poor peasants - they would all perish going to see their kin in the village 2 hours away, in less than a year!

You know, this statement explains a lot. I often wondered why the rest of the world didn't seem to realize just how awesome American Megalomaniacal Corporation/Terrorist Groups were. I mean it was as if they'd never herd of Cobra Commander. It was like they didn't know that good guys had lame equipment and bad guys had cool metal masks, heads, weapons and hot chicks.

But Surpentor doesn't count. He was one lame Euro-trash mutant. Shoot, as I recall he flew around on a stupid "flying snake scooter". Basically, this guy teaches us not to combine the DNA of Hitler, Napoleon, Attila the Hun and Gangues Kahn with snakes.

So, so lame.

I can't believe that Cobra Commander didn't get elected president with this awesome campaign ad...

I to worry about murphy's law here, but (s)he does have plenty of low level stuff to burn.

There only went 1 MM 1 LB and 2FB

No Melfs AA (One of my favourites) or other second level spells.

And back to the level debate assuming that V doesn't use a feat to expand on his MM he is at least Lvl 9 (5 Missiles)

Assuming this and that V has atleast 18 Int he has at least 1 3rd level up his sleeve, and knowing the way he wields his arcane power, he still got some kaboom!!! Of course speed of plot does tend to burn metagaming very quickly!

No, he can’t be a meat shield, Joe never gets hit. Weapons can only affect robots and helicopters, and with the later, the occupant gets to jump out first.

Exactly, he'd run in front of the party, and all projectile weapons, and ranged spells would miss him. The enemy would waste all of their resources, and then the party could move in and finish the job.

Eh, maybe I should have phrased it better the first time.

I was born in 1986. I'm 18, and I'm a freakin' legal adult.

That depends entirely on your country/state laws. Some places consider 18 adult enough to drink/drive/smoke/gamble/watch X-rated stuff, in others, it's 21.

I'm 24 though. :P I remember the "Don't play on train tracks" message. I think I caught the cartoon around the 1990s(here in Asia we usually get stuff 3 years behind or so)

As an American, I can do everything but drink at 18, and am officially an adult.

Somebody said that the people who watched GI Joe were youngsters, but they aren't THAT young, seeing as I'm younger and I'm legally considered to be an adult. That's all.

Bah! I've had that nightmare since the original run of The Avengers, thanks to a misunderstanding of what I was seeing during the mind transfer episode. Ever since then, the things you could do with helmeted Lego figures by twisting the faces around inside the helmets gave me the creeps...

But back to the strip itself, I have a question -- what if your party actually prefers random encounters to plotlines? Doesn't that spoil V's premise?

Push come to shove, I'd rather fight a skunk than a badger. A skunk will eventually run off. A badger would fight until either 1 of two things have happened:
1) You are a corpse or,
2) It is a corpse

Yeah it's all this big, massive plot by the Illuminati to throw off everyone's body clocks in an attempt to facilitate thei goals of a one world government. You see, the earth used to require 25 whole hours to complete one full rotation on it's axis, but thanks to the intruduction of jet propulsion and nuclear powered aircraft engines they have secret sped up the earth's rotation to only take 24 hours and some change. Forget global warming! If this keeps up we're either going to be squished flat by the increase in gravity! Run for the highest hill you can find! You'll stand a better chance!

Ok, the question is Skunk or Badger.

My initial reaction was the color markings matched a skunk, (which I have seen in real life and too close for comfort).

Upon further review, the markings are similar to the badger mascot for the U of Wisconsin, (almost went there as I grew up in Wis).

I submit that therefore it is a badger, not a skunk due to the lack of a bushy tail, which Badgers do not have. And a badger is a much more aggresive animal than a skunk, and hence a better chance of bothering Belkar longer.

An increase in the earth's rotation would increase the centrifugal force, and as such would actually decrease the effect of Earths gravitational pull...

And, I say polecat!! Polecat!! :) Well, not really, but a striped skunk...Skunks have two distinctive stripes on their backs...a bader only has one, and that does not generally go all the way down it's back...

Well, I was feeling old next to all these 18-year-olds, but I graduated high school in '98. Guess I got nothing on you in the age department, grampa.

I'll never, ever be able to see a G.I.Joe character again without thinking either "Stop all the downloading!" or "Who wants a body massage?" Ahh, the internet--where comedic genius meets way too much free time.

Also: I assumed it was a skunk, since a bad smelling animal would be more insulting to throw in someone's face. But hey, can't go wrong with a badger. That's like jamming a blender on "mutilate" and tossing it at somebody. "Awww, what a cute little pup--IIIIEEEE! Aaaaagh! Getitoffgetitoffgetitoff!"

Okay, so, final question: who gets guard duty now? Is Roy going to admit that the fact that he doesn't have any kind of weapon (bag of skunks/badgers aside) makes him a lousy choice to guard everyone while they're sleeping? I'm thinking not, but what's he going to do if monsters show up during the night? Feed them weasels until they die of high cholesterol?

Yeah. Badger. Definitely. Definitely Badger. Definitely.

A skunk would stink up the whole campsite. I don't remember ever seeing a Dire Skunk or Celestial Skunk listed in the MM. Plus, a month or so ago, I had three different people in three different PbP games all mention something about badgers, summoning badger or badger familiars all within a couple days of each other. And I don't think any of them live in Wisconsin. Therefore, I say again, badger!

As for guard duty? The Laws of Comedy demand that that honor go to Belkar. If Belkar gets it, Roy STILL won't get a night's sleep out of fear and distrust. Or, Belkar gets bored and goes exploring only to return to find the whole party wrapped in webbing while a Giant Spider and a bottle of ketchup sit nearby. Then again, maybe this will be the introduction of the "Ranger gets lost in the woods" story line.

Nope - Badgers have a form of Rage as a racial ability. From the SRD:

Rage (Ex): A badger that takes damage in combat flies into a berserk rage on its next turn, clawing and biting madly until either it or its opponent is dead. It gains +4 to Strength, +4 to Constitution, and –2 to Armor Class. The creature cannot end its rage voluntarily.

a.) DId he mean that there would be one inaddition to the normal two

Hmm. (It seems really odd for him to say things like "deeply disappointed" - as if he expected better.)

And (much like the surprise with Elan: "You- you KNOW something!!") he was actually RIGHT. Granted that Roy needs to grow some Sense Motive, but he's always struck me as a pretty sensible guy otherwise and a good leader; until now. What sort of fighter goes on a quest without a weapon?? He was willing to try to BUY another weapon for this trip... I don't think it's an honor thing. I think it's a "lack of conveniently placed trees" thing. Can't break off a branch or pick up a stick if there aren't any branches or sticks to be found...

Although wisdom could have suggested grabbing one of those spears from the trolls...

But those are Troll sized spears. I'm almost certain that the rules prevent him from using them.

Two questions:

1. Where did the chalkboard come from?

2. Once V had finished with it, couldn't Roy have broken it up and used a length of timber from it as a club?

Hehe - just kidding. The chalkboard was a plot-device, so it was just 'there' when required.

I admit I had rather hoped for an extra (i.e. third) episode this week. However, the two we got were especially good ones, so fair enough.

*Looks forward to Monday - even if it does mean back to work* :D

Indeed, a plotdevice. Reminds of the 'gag-reflex' in BnG:
http://www.bobandgeorge.com/Archive/May04.php?date=27

Don't want to advertise or anything, just finding the coincidence uncanny and worth mentioning.

And I think Belkar was just a normal Belkar, seeing as the way he put it this time was the most annoying way he could have put it, which is typical for him. For example, the 'deeply disappointed'-part probably stung a lot deeper than any insult would have done.

He also gave up shields. Its the the only logical solution.

Roy's normal weapon of choice is a greatsword, and thus two-handed, so he wouldn't be using a shield with it.

Well, the arguement/mystery of the chalk board's appearance/dissapearance was simply written off as "a plot-device" so why can't we just end this by saying "Roy doesn't have a weapon because its funny that he doesn't have a weapon and thats is the entire popint of this comic strip, to be funny at the expense of reason and rationale."

Wow, the plot thickens even further. We now have three simultaneous storylines taking place - and if the cutscenes from the end of the first cycle were correct, we're soon to have at least one more.

I hope Rich knows what he's doing; he's putting an awful lot on his plate. This may be the most complex and nuanced gaming comic ever, with the possible exception of FuzzyKnights. I love it, but I can't help but be a little daunted at the thought of keeping all these balls in the air, so to speak.

This is actually more feasible than it sounds. I read a book once where a town was under attack by an army of elves (note that in this world elves are evil creatures that seek to enter our world and enslave us all). The town's blacksmith simply grabbed the nearest elf and began to beat on the other elves with it. ;)

Of course I know which book it was, I'm trying to collect all of Mr. Pratchett's books, I've got about 10 or so. I wish D&D elves were vulnerable to iron, it would make it so much easier to kill them. And pray your DM never makes you fight Granny Weatherwax, your defeat would be inevitable.

D&D elves are vulnerable to iron, since as a race they have no specific damage reduction abilities. You could hit 'em with a rubber mallet and they'd be vulnerable. ;)

Yes D&D elves can be harmed by iron, but Discworld elves are particularly susceptible to it. The book never really goes into detail about it, but apparently they can sense magnetism and just being near iron makes them uncomfortable.

Being uncomfrotable is just a role play aspect though. No benefit against them.

Caledonian

This is precisely why rules-lawyers should never try to represent beings from works of fiction in D&D.

The Discworld elves' magic was disrupted and negated by magnetic fields. That's why the portal to their world was sealed off by the standing stones, and why their spells collapsed when they were faced with iron. The elves were petty and vain - they were also ugly and weak, which is why they cast glamours to make everyone else see them as astonishingly beautiful, dominated the minds of those they came across, and tormented those they met. Iron not only screwed up their physiology, but revealed a truth that would be immensely psychologically painful.

D&D doesn't even have penalties for massive physical injuries.

Actually, there were options in 2nd Ed where you could be limping or worse, due to injuries to specific bodyparts. Even back then, there were rules for "death by massive damage"(which carried over to 3/3.5E)

It would be funny to have Rincewind as a DnD boss.

Rincewind is surprisingly easy to make in DnD:
Rincewind, Human Wizard (1)
Str (low)
Dex (high)
con (low)
int 9
wis (medium-high) (he has enough intuition to know when to run)
cha (mediocre)

Thus he has too low int to cast spells. He'll probably have the "dodge" and "dash" feats.

Rincewind is actually pretty smart, he just can't cast spells because one of the Eight Spells scared away all the others, and they're still too scared to go back in.

Remember, on Discworld, magic is alive.

Personally, I'd say he's an Expert with Bluff, Concentration, Craft: Woodworking, Knowledge: Arcana, Knowledge: Geography, Knowledge: History, Knowledge: Local, Knowledge: Religion, Speak Language, and Spellcraft as class skills.

I'd also give him the Run and Endurance feats. As well as a slightly above-average Con, he can run for bloody AGES...
