View Full Version : Druid and Defeating Invisibility

Druid Villian Question;

Are there any ways that a druid can defeat an enemy's use of invisibility, or otherwise detect (and destroy) invisible creatures without resorting to expendable items such as scrolls and wands?

I notice they get True Seeing on their spell list, but I need something that can be used at lower levels. The only thing I could think of was Wildshaping into a bat or dire bat.

I could be missing something very obvious, so any help would be appreciated.

Faerie Fire?

Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention, this is a Core-only build.

The problem with Faerie-fire is that it only works in a 5-foot radius burst.

Detect Magic (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/detectMagic.htm), if you can afford to concentrate. Follow it with Farie Fire (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/faerieFire.htm), entangle (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/entangle.htm), or the like. Alternatively, Summon Bats (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/summonSwarm.htm) and Hide from Animals (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/hideFromAnimals.htm) to catch pretty much anyone who is trying to sneak up on you, and it's long-term. You just have to look for combinations, I'm sure I've been ninja'd by about 3.

Hand of Glory gives you a once a day see invis, plus a spare ring slot... Wooo. Not useful when you're wildshaped but you can't have everything

Not useful when you're wildshaped but you can't have everything

Wildling Clasps people! Everything is useful when you wild shape.

Try Giant Vermin (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/giantVermin.htm): Spider. They have tremorsense. Or summon a Unicorn and have it sweep the area with Detect Evil. Heck.. Control Winds (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/controlWinds.htm): Blast at Windstorm level wind. Now watch for the outline that appears around your foe.

Follow up any of these spells with a Faerie Fire and you're golden.

Umm... animal companion with Scent and/or Blindsight?

The only thing I could think of was Wildshaping into a bat or dire bat.Won't work. Blindsight is a special quality, and Wildshape only gives you special attacks. Genuine animals with special senses (summoned or companions) will still work, though.

Sleet Storm (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/sleetStorm.htm) puts you and him on even ground, with the advantage that you can wildshape into something with balance.

Your options are limited, but a Dire Bat companion, and Faerie Fire should cover most things.

Otherwise your options are Scent/Faerie Fire or simply push up your Spot. You can spot ainvisibile creature, it's only -20 IIRC. Spot is a Druid ability, based on Wis.

Obscuring Mist and Entangle. Listen and Call Lightning. Wildshape into an owl for "accuracy."

Spike Growth, Spike Stones. Non-flyers take damage every 5'.

Terrain and visibility are yours to control. Spot and listen are class skills. When you foes are immobile and blind for minutes per caster level you have plenty of time to use Call Lightning and swarms to maximum effect.

Since you're using first to third level spells here you can run them out of Dispel Magics pretty easily.

Hi,

Faerie Fire really is the best countermeasure. You do not need to pinpoint with your listen skill, just know the general area, which likely will not receive the same penalty to listen (a druid class skill) as the normal check.

"pinpoint" is for figuring out which square - and as the radius for Faerie Fire is a mere five feet, that's pretty much what you need.

You can ask your animal companion or Summon with Scent or Blindsense which square, but then you've got the issue of communication - Speak With Animals is a Druid spell, no problem there, but as it is only one minute per level, you've got two different spells you need to cast in order to null your opponent's invisibility that way (Speak With Animals, Faerie Fire) - three, if you need to Summon something up, too.

True Seeing is probably going to be your best bet, really - cuts it down to just one spell.

Which would probably still require a Spot or Listen check, but not as hard of one as pinpointing (up to the DM's judgment).

And you could have your animal companion trained to point out hidden creatures in response to a command given in Common (or Silvan, or Druidic). Heck, there are animals in the real world which do that (some types of hunting dogs, for example), and druidic animal companions are better-trained than mundane animals. It'd probably count as a Handle Animal trick.
