View Full Version : OOTS would rock as a movie

If they made an OOTS movie called
OOTS: Azure City
it would be a box office hit. It wouldn't be stick figures though it would be actors/animations. When the paladins rise from the dead in the throne room it would be epic. Or when the Azurites hold the breach after V retreat, the audience would probably start crying to see the soldiers trampled like that. Or Elan singing Oh Buddy Roy in the background while showing soldiers fighting and dying.

I don't think this would really work. What makes OotS so unique is its style - it just wouldn't be the same any other way. But an animation movie (if The Giant was wiling to do all that drawing) would be pretty cool.

I don't think so.

I mean... It's a parodic comic. Sure dramatic scenes will be much more dramatic on the screen, but the rest of OotS magic will be lost.

OOTS already rocks, so I don't really see a need for a movie which would delay the comics.

I can't really see it working all that well. I like OoTS a lot, but I can't see myself sitting down for a feature length OotS film. For one thing, the Spooky Wizard by the Coast wouldn't let us have the Min- err, squid thingys.

Dungeon Crawlin' Fools just doesn't have enough plot to be worth it, I think- great fun, but little plot. And, remember, even the Pythons managed better with plot for their movies (very few will tell you that Meaning of Life was better than Holy Grail)!

The later books might work better, though.

You could cram Origins of the PC in Dungeon Crawling fools or at laest some of its content...OR make it as short movie..

I couldn't really see OOTS as a movie, but if it was done similar to Clone Wars (i.e., short 5-7 minute episodes), it could work. As for whether the animation would stay the same style as in the comic, I can't say.

I couldn't see it as a full movie. It is a great comic but I don't think it would translate particularly well to a movie. However, like has been said, a SW style OOTS series could be a lot of fun.

No, it wouldn't, at least in its current form, as it's written in a punchline-per-page basis. This would be annoying on screen. It'll have to be adapted for screenplay first.

if they were in clone wars shorts it'd be cool, but f no stick figures then at least a very cartoony style, and it would create dozens of fair weather fans, to the giant it'd be like having a friend on an mmo ebay his account, you see the same face with the same clothes, but everything is so horribly different that it's not worth it...

An OOTS movie would be awful-who knows what a producer would do with it?

Yes, OOTS has some great characters and an interesting storyline. Those are two of the most important things in a good movie. In the hands of a good screenwriter, and with the right actors, OOTS would make a wonderful movie.

I think OOTS would really rock as a webcomic! I mean, it seems almost as if it was designed for that very purpose!

...

Oh, right... it was... :smallwink:

The parody exception is pretty large here and the movie can likely drive right thru it. And it is by no means sure WOTC or anyone else would cause problems.

On the other hand a number of critics complained that Laurel & Hardy films were short of plot, ignoring that their films were more successful the less they bothered with plot.
Plot in humor is like plot in porn. It's just there to give a little frame to the good stuff. You don't need much, and it doesn't have to be much good.

I think an animated movie version of Oots would be great. Provided you don't take the movie right from the comics. It would have to be adapted to a movie format.

Also, you'd have to get good actors. No Samuel L. Jackon.

This is a great idea in theory, but has one major flaw: can you imagine what liberties the producers and them would take? I mean look at what they did to the Eragon movie. OoTS really wouldn't work out or be that good unless Giant pretty much did everything.

While I would definitely love an OotS-like film, I don't think that Order of the Stick itself would adapt particularly well.

The best way would be, IMO, to have a film with a similar style of humour but original, unconnected plot (possibly, if you're desperate, set elsewhere in the OotS world). That way, you get the same groundwork, but don't have to worry about carrying over everything that already exists. Fresh characters can do things that might work well on screen that the Order wouldn't do in a comic, and vice versa.

Or you could just watch The Gamers. Similar kind of rule-mocking humour.

I do like the idea of a radio drama though.

I think most of you are assuming that an OOTS movie would be a literal translation from the strips to the screen, when that would be foolish.

The real question is, could Rich write a screenplay that followed the basic story beats, kept the same characters, but contained humor that was original to the movie and took into account the differences between film and comics? And I think the answer is, "Definitely." Just because Dungeon Crawlin' Fools is light on plot doesn't mean that a movie set in the Dungeon of Dorukan NEEDS to be light on plot as well.

However, I do think that any form of production other than a direct animation of Rich's current stick figures would ruin any such movie. The stick figures are part-and-parcel of the concept.

Agreed, it would be great if Rich made a new story but kept the characters and animation. Although what makes OoTS unique is it's comic style. Plus voices would kinda ruin it.

The entire OOTS story from beginning to end is kind of like a movie, but I can't imagine OOTS as anything but a webcomic with stick figures.

"OOTS would rock as a movie"?

No it wouldn't. Its a gag-a-day webcomic. It wouldn't "rock". Its not meant to. You could do all the CGI up and overhaul/dramatize the plot and you could get a "rockin" movie - the only problem is that it wouldn't resemble the OOTS anymore.

Just my 2 cts.

When they have to talk, their mouths will act very ackward, and might to some extent ruin much of the fun. 8-bit movies get away with that but thats because of the very static forms, this artistic rendition is far from it and provides ample movement so you expect the same from their mouths. But thats now how it works...

Agreed. As a consensus the strip would be lame as movie.
