The very last panel, is the last time you see this hobgoblin with the white beard. For numerous panels before that comic, he appears to be a Lieutenant of some sorts, and constantly acts as the conduit for humor and he adds in his "witty" comments every now and again.

I liked him, and he just suddenly disappears. It could just be he is irrelevant, but his semi-unique design or coloring scheme gave him potential to be a repeating character.

I might be making a big deal out of this, but I find all the humor, and great plot strengths come from the "villains" (I used quote since you can argue whether or not Redcloak is villain.) and because of that, I am baffled why that hobgoblin simply disappears.

Died, when Redcloak and Xykon escaped from the tower, another hobgoblin reported that the general was in the courtyard when the explosion (the gate being shattered) went off.

Ah well that makes more sense than what I said.

Traditionally, when a military person has died (usually US army IIRC), the song "Taps" is played at the funeral, on a single trumpet or similar instrument.

It is a short, sad song

He was a good character, although he seemed to exist mainly so Redcloak could be talking to someone who isn't a colossal moron :mitd: while Xykon was elsewhere. For the record, I think his first appearance is in Truth (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0451.html).

He performed his duties extremely well.

Eventually all Hob/goblins do there duty. I mean self-sacrifice is the only thing they really can do. That and kill.

RE: Taps

"Taps" is a traditional US Military Trumpet/bugle solo, played upon Evening Colors, or at military funerals. It is a song which is pretty much composed to bring abotu sad, and/or contemplative emotional reactions.

And dance, and sing, and play, and love!

And the general was more of a side character no-name there so Redcloak wasn't forced to talk to the audience directly about his plans. Once the whole war was over, he didn't really have much of a purpose. I mean, whats he going to do, give war advice on the resistance?

Or, serve as maybe a high level cleric.

He was probably a Fighter or NPC class, from all appearances.

But alas, he died. At least he died well, doing his duty to the last...
