Option one. Vera seems to have issues with having anything more than limited ammo, and if Angelface gets injured or dies then The Lizard is going to hold our "heroes" responsible. I vote for Righty, Smokestack and Professor.

It should be noted, that Angelface is one of the most skilled combatants in the Kobold Mafia (well, this branch of it anyway). She's proably around the same level of skill as Redman (The Lizard's bodyguard).

Also, Nicholas can carry more ammo with him, but it's bulky and it takes awhile to reload between shots.

I say ... Angelface. the peer pressure got to me.

As for movies, The Usual Suspects is amazing, Reservoir Dogs isn't bad either. If you can get hold of it somehow, I really recommend Infernal Affairs, though. It's a Hong Kong gangster film and its what The Departed was based on(copied from), and, frankly, The Departed was a sad, sad imitation by comparison. You just haven't seen bad-ass in the caliber of the Hong Kong mafia.

Oh, and on a note that is, as far as you know, completally unrelated to anything I have planned for the comic, could you guys name me any mobster/heist/ crime oriented movies that you can think of. Things like The Godfather, Cool Hand Luke, The Italian Job, ect.

The origional or the newer entirely sepparate version?

I vote option 1, for the same reasons as Blayze.

How should Our Gyros "heroes" attack the Dwarves?
well, it looks like the contest was somthing of a flop.

Lyinginbedmon
2008-06-18, 05:39 PM
Well, first things first: Take out the ranged attackers, preferably the spellcasters before the guntoters (Because they'll be more varied than a guy with a crossbow/gun).

Then, we start taking out the dwarves with shields at the front door. I'm not sure how, we have like 5 different melee & ranged combat guys, do the math :smalltongue:

Blayze

Nice Angelface banner-type-thing, BRC. And I say our "heroes" should find some way of attacking from underground. Their enemies are dwarves. They've got some form of fetish for dark, damp underground spaces or something, which means tunnels leading into that base. Perhaps they like it because nobody can see how unnecessarily ugly they are.

Nice Suggjestion, except that's sort of what they are already doing. You see, Our Heroes are back in Granitania, which if you remember correctly, is entierly underground (Hence the grey tunnel backround again). They are using tunnels because tunnels are the only way to get around.

Thing 2: Tommorow I go to visit my brother for the weekend, so you guys and gals have a couple days to formulate a plan. You know how that works. All magic has been recharged so Oscar can throw around his summons again.

Thing 3: For the DnD campaign I'm going to DM in the near future, the PC's are part of an inquisition, and I need help with the inquisitorial motto. Specifically, I need the phrase "We know where you live" translated into latin, if anybody could do that for me that would be great.

It's time for Round Three with Sir Gnomley Esquire, Pick a plan.
(1) Rob engages and Oscar uses Shape of Glass to back him up, greg uses his grapple and rope to trip up the gnome. Jack short-range teleports behind the gnome and blasts him.
(2) Rob engages, greg moves up to support him. Oscar retreats back to heal when neccessary, Jack uses weaker but more accurate magic to avoid hitting Greg and Rob
(3) Plan one with jack not teleporting a using weaker but more accurate
(4) Plan two with jack teleporting and blasting.
(5) they all try to clear the hall so righty can open up with his chattergun

@V yeah, I don't like the new size much either, I think I'll switch to 150% this size (75% of the old Giganto-size)

Alright, some news. My laptop (the compy I do Rob and Jack on) is currently in the shop. I got everything onto the backup drive, so I can get work done from my desktop. However the Desktop monitor messes up colors abit, so I'll see what I can do.

In unrelated news, I'm going to DM a DnD campaign, and I was helping a player make a character. Now, he came up with all this on his own, I just want to point that out. Most of my suggjestions were just reasons why his character may make sense in the campaign setting and all, or pointing out a prestige class he may want to take. But The final result was this: A gnomish Psycopath who wields a sawblade-style weapon and is usually very polite when he's not commiting bloody murder. Random Artistchat thingy, or What the Hell Was Commie Thinking?

I can hear all twelve of you out there saying "WTF Commie, your'e giving the kill to some random character who barely has a name?". Well that wasn't my intent from the beginning.

You see, originally my plan was to have them drive the gnome into that door in the backround, he would run into a dark room and then get eaten by a grue. However, I didn't like that for some reason. Before my computer was sent to the shop, during the great server death of 08', as it will become known, I made about 80% of a comic where Rob draws his sword and decapitates The Gnome, whose body is then fried by Jack.

However, I didn't have my laptop, and besides, I didn't like that solution very much either. It's just "Wooh Hoo, the "heroes" Kill the gnome." I needed somthing climatic. So I went through a bunch of ideas, everything from The Gnome warping through the floor and getting shot by The Lizard, to somthing involving the Shardhawk that got warped to a random location. And while I wanted to do the Shardhawk thing, I Couldn't think of a good way to pull it off.
Then I was like "Wait, what happened to Smokestack. Oscar healed him up but we havn't seen him inside the house yet..." And Ta Da, the random Mauveshirt gets the kill, and spends three otherwise identical panels trying to think up a Bond One Liner.
But Now, I need to replace Greg's Shank.

I actually agree with Blayze. If you don't already have your bond one liner planned when you pull the trigger, It's best to just be silent but badass.

Or, if he has to say something, Darkeblade's qoute is better than any of Lying's.

I like lyinginbedmon suggestion: You just got ahead of the competition.

My computer is currently somewhere in Repair Limbo, and as I mentioned before my monitor has trouble with colors. If it takes too long I'll make another one with the desktop, with that last one I mostly just moved around stuff I'd already made. Meh, who knows, current Votes

@V yeah, I don't like the new size much either, I think I'll switch to 150% this size (75% of the old Giganto-size)

I was just reading up on Rob and Jack when I noticed this. I loved the new size!

Also, one vote for No Brainer.

Attention All, My Compy is fixed, so I'll hopefully get the comic done over the weekend, or on monday, whenever.

Anyway, here are the Votes.

Unless there's an influx of votes then, it's "Silence"

No.

No, it would be much cooler for Smokestack to say nothing. After all, he's too cool for one-liners. He needs to simply reload his gun and wait for the "heroes" to stop failing so much and stand up again.

I think you missed one, probably either myself or Blayze judging by the last vote count. In other words: yeah, silence is going to take this.

Annnndddd, voting closed.

To tide you over, here's a Character redesign for Smokestack. After the Lizard hears what happened to The Gnome, he'll promote Smokestack out of the ranks of Redshirts, so he get's a new look and a sniper rifle.

I'm probably not the only one thinking Smokestack would be a good pyro, but he looks really cool with his rifle.

Well he Headshotted the Gnome, so I figured a Sniper seemed an appropriate career path,

Because people are apparentally Wondering, here are the rules to Arcaball

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w27/bloddyredcommie/aRCABALL.png
EDIT, There is supposed to by another BSDB on the bottom of that.

An Arcaball Court.
S= Striker (3 per team)
B= Blocker (2 per team)
D= Disruptor (3 per team)

Arcaball is a game played mainly by True Mages, though some spell mages play a more limited form of it. It is played with up to five balls, often using three for skirmish play and in tournament play another ball is added for every round of the tournament. The object is simple, to get the ball into the opposing teams goal. Through various means. there are three positions, Strikers, Blockers, and Disruptors. All players stand outside of a sunken pit field with five pillars in the middle.
An Arcaball itself is, by the nature of the game, highly durable, professional balls are enchanted to continually repair themselves.
Strikers: The purpose of the Striker is to get the ball into the opposing teams goal. The main method for this is various evocations, blasts of force, explosions, gusts of wind, ect. Though occasionally summons are used, summoning magic takes awhile to cast and said summons rarely last very long.
Blockers: The defensive aspect of the team, the two blockers are in charge of protecting the goal. the main method used to do this is to conjure or create protective barriers. Though it's not technically illegal to "Stonewall" the goal by simply putting a barrier in front of it, it is frowned upon and such a tactic will often result in the barrier either being blasted by the opposing teams Strikers, or counter spelled by the opposing teams Disruptors. Occasionally summons are used, though for the reasons stated above, they rarely last long. The most common tactic is instead to summon a small, temporary barrier that lasts no more than a few seconds so as to deflect the ball. This has the added benefit of not draining the Blocker's energy, and being able to throw up quickly.
Disruptors: By far the most underrated position in the game, the Disruptor's job is to counterspell the opposing team. Many a game has been won or lost due to a good disruptor and a well-timed counterspell.

Allow me to make an apology for the lack of comics, dear readers.

You see, usually I make comics on my laptop, however, about a month (A little more than that actually) ago, It started not turning on and not waking up from hibernate. We sent it away for ten days, it came back, worked for a few days, and started having the problem again. Last Friday we got a new computer, which lasted three days before it started having the same problem, It looks like I may get it back tommorow, hopefully with the problem fixed. I have a desktop, but it dosn't really like Inkscape and it's screen is messed up a little, so I don't like doing art stuff on it. Today I tried to do just that, but alas, I couldn't get anything done because Inkscape kept freezing up when I tried to zoom back in.

So yeah, sorry bout the slow update schedule, hopefully once I get a laptop that is actually capable of TURNING THE #$#@$ ON, I can return to a more regular schedule. Hopefully that will be tomorrow, but after a month of this ridiculous problem that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, Iv'e kinda lost all optimism concerning me and laptops.

I'll try to find some time to write that eventually. Heck, I'll do it as a contest, people get to decide what happens during that time period, and the one with the most votes gets turned into comics (Subject to some editing on my part though, I don't want to do a twenty-part epic tale involving massive crowd scenes and dancing hippopotomi).

As for the Color scheme, it's mostly because I got kind of tired of nothing but grey backrounds (Which, because Rob and Greg both wear grey, was kinda annoying). On the other hand, I don't like drawing backrounds, so it may head back to a monocrome thing shortly. It was weird, at one point I thought "Okay BRC, it's time to stop being lazy and make some backrounds." and then I realized "Wait, they are in a subterranean nation consisting almost entierly of tunnels, plain grey pretty much IS the backround"

Midground open mouthed guy: His mouth is open because he's on his way to an exam for his History of Summoning class, he was out all night partying and so he's talking to himself trying to memorize stuff.
The Girl: She dosn't have any classes this period, so she's just kinda wandering around.
Brown Robed Guy:He appears to change position and direction randomly, in fact, he's a grad student who is helping with some research on temporal magic and a little bit got on him, so he's not fully in-sinc with Clock Time as it were, hence his skipping around.
Igon: Hey, what's he doing here. Apparentally visiting as a Planar exchange student and being sullen because all the other kids look down on him for being a spell mage (Which because Abroy dosn't have true magic the way Rob and Jack verse does, it's not really his fault, but stil.) I was going to make the next comic tonight, but then I didn't. So instead, FLUFF!
The Golem's Fist

First of all, a quick physics lesson. How hard thing A hits thing B is a result of thing A’s momentum, which is the Mass times the Velocity. Therefore, Something moving 10 mph and weighing 10 pounds has the same Velocity as something moving 20 MPH and weighing 5 pounds, or something moving 5 MPH while weighing 10 pounds.
The Golem’s Fist is a weapon whose origin comes from Dwarven history. Barehanded combat was a ritualistic part of Dwarven society, as dwarves believe it to be inefficient to build nonlethal weapons (By their logic, a weapon is something that hurts people. If you build a weapon that doesn’t hurt people, you have built something defective, this pragmatism is a big part of Dwarven culture). Therefore, unarmed combat was used for sport and to relieve stress. History says that the first Golems Fist was built for the dwarven hero Kargil who was a master of unarmed combat during one of the goblin wars. The Dwarven King Stonecrown (Note, the king of the dwarves is almost always referred to as “Stonecrown” despite wearing a metal crown like most kings.) ordered Kargil to go to the battlefield, Kargil said that he had never wielded a weapon before, so Stonecrown ordered his forgemasters to create a weapon that Kargil could use to the greatest effect. The result was the Golems Fist, a magical weapon that boosts the strength of the wearer just enough to compensate for it’s massive weight. Therefore, though the wielder punches just as fast as before (so as not to hamper any unarmed skill they learned before they got the Fist), the momentum of that punch is much greater due to the weight of the Fist itself. A golems fist is a fairly rare weapon and the Dwarves are the only ones who know how to craft them. All Golem’s Fists were either bought, stolen (Like Rob’s), or received as gifts from Dwarves (Like Brimsalt’s).

Secondly,
Orcs and Orks

Grathnar mentioned that he was, in fact, an Orc and not an Ork. Greg’s confusion concerning the two is not uncommon.
First of all, Orcs and Orks are technically the same species, it would be more accurate to describe them as two cultures or races. Orcs live primarily in the South, mainly in the area between the coastline and the Sunbaked Desert (where most Solamite’s come from, thus explaining Oscar’s image of Orcs). The Orcish cultural outlook and sense of honor can be attributed to the politics of this region. The Orcs control valuable trade routes between the desert and the coast, and therefore would have been wiped out long ago if they acted like their northern cousins. Instead they are content to accept a small tribute from caravans in exchange for keeping the roads clear. This arrangement leads to the sense of honor ingrained amongst the orcs. The most successful clans are those that get the most tribute, and merchants pick their trade routes based on which route seems safest, usually the territory controlled by the Clan that seems the most likely and the most capable of protecting the caravan. This has gone on for so long that the two things the orcs value moss are Honor (Likelyhood to uphold a promise, such as protecting the trade routes), and Strength (Ability to protect the trade routes). In the south the phrase “An Orcish Promise” refers to a promise made by somebody both likely and capable of fulfilling the promise (Example, “Why should we charter your ship” “Listen, I’ve been a captain for twenty years, and my crew have at least a century of sailing experience between them. We’ll get you to Steelwind safely and that’s an Orcish promise!”)

In the north it’s a different story. Once again the Ork’s settled in an area difficult to farm, although some attempts have been made. However, Orkish territory borders Human, Dwarven, and Elven lands, and so ever since the Orks first arrived, armies and adventures have been breaking up any attempts to establish any sort of large-scale orkish society (Due to the slightly Xenophobic nature of all three races in that area, although that can likely be blamed on the giants). Therefore, the only way for the Ork’s to aquire goods has been VIA raiding. This lifestyle has led to Orks having minimal social interaction with each other, or with other races. The most successful Ork’s are those that can either take the most things from their neighbors, or take things from other Orks. Either way, it’s no surprise that the Orks have become a race of Berserk raiders. Over time, the Ork’s have trickled south, and pockets of them can be found all over the northern continent.
The similarity of names between these two cultures comes from “Marspeak” or “Seaspeak”, the language that originated amongst the islands between the continents and eventually became something of a Lingua Franca. The first Mariners to hear about the Ork’s were Whalers, who attributed their violent disposition to Orcas. They took this name back with them to the islands, where they told of green skinned people who fought like Orca’s, a name quickly shortened to Orc. This name then leaked in both directions, becoming associated with the Orcs down south, and the Orks up north (The K was a human addition. Humans associate a harsher K sound with barbarians, so the northern humans spelled Ork with a K while the southern humans used the original spelling of Orc.)

Yeah, I experimented with changing Jack and Grathnar's appearance a little (Originally I designed all the characters looking straight at the "Camera" as it were, so they all look a little wierd and I'm trying to figure out how/if I should try to fix that). The elf dosn't look as finished as I'd like him too either, but whatever, it's late and I'm tired.
The Signs read as Follows
Panel One: Note to all Students and Proffessors, Fireballs are NOT to be used outside of appropriate classrooms and labs. -The Administration.

Panel two: 3 Rools of Evocation Labs: 1. Remain at least 20 feet from the Impact Point. 2. Alert all bystanders before casting. 3. Wear earplugs and Blast Visors.
Panel Three: 2 Rules of Evocation Labs: Never say "Whats the worst thing that could happen", Report all craters larger than 5ft in diameter to campus janitorial services.
Panel 3: The Rule of Evocation Labs: If something starts glowing and expanding, dive for cover.

Greg's going first while everybody else sits there with their jaws hanging open. After Greg, Oscar and Rob will go, then Jack and Grathnar.

What Should Greg Do?
1: Attack The Gnome with the Fat Boy.
2: Attack The Gnome with Chekov's Gun.
3: Attack The Gnome with his Shiv's
4: Attack the Laughing Shadow's with the Fat Boy
5: Attack the Laughing Shadow's with Chekov's Gun.
6: Attack the Laughing Shadow's with his Shiv's.
7: Run for it.
8: Wait for Rob and Oscar to go.

The simplest way for this to make sense is if it's Sir Gnomely Esquire's past self, which would mean that the First Temporal Law ("What happened stays happened") will prevent Gnomely's death.

Greg can't use Chekov's Gun, it's meant to be seen in Act One and fired in Act Three (We've already seen it in Act One. Does it really count, though? It was the focus of the arc instead of something that is just mentioned. Then again, BRC *did* skip straight to the resolution of said arc, which might make it qualify as it was a minor part of the story, so to speak).

Option 4.

Lyinginbedmon

I disagree and vote for option 2

BRC
2008-09-29, 09:08 AM
For the purposes of this, The end of Act one does count. Also, on the subject of Chekov's Gun, It has a special power which the characters know about, but which we don't. All we know is that it will prove crucial at some point in Act Three, because I have no idea what is going to happen during Act 3, I couldn't tell you. In fact, It's not constant, all the Devices throw around Fate magic, which I will explain for you. In the meantime, it serves as a perfectly servicable firearm (More powerful than Greg's old Luckmaker, but not any more powerful than any other highly enchanted pistol).
Fate Magic

By far the strangest and most unpredictable of the magical disciplines, Fate Magic makes things happen by making them have happened anyway.
For Example, a practitioner of Fate Magic could attack by calling a meteor strike, not by reaching into space with magic, grabbing a meteor, and pulling it towrds the surface, but my editing the past such that a meteor was ALWAYS going to fall on that very point at that very time. That said, Fate magic is almost never used because it's impossible to know if you succsessfuly cast the spell, or if you just got lucky. Thus, Fate Magic is only wielded in specific manners by Artifacts like the Devices of Fate, or by certain entities like The Call. Chekov's Gun, for example, uses Fate Magic to give itself whatever power is most neccessary for it's wielder at a given point in time. It does this by having always had that power, though what power it always had varies depending on what the current wielder will need at some point. I can't tell you what it does, because the gun itself dosn't know, until it needs to, at which point it always will have.
This also outlines the other reason why there are very very few mortal wielders of Fate Magic, it leads to frequent headaches.

I was going more for "Cool" than "Funny" with them anyway.

When I created my "Rob" Template, I made him facing directly forward, so it looks like Rob is walking sideways everywhere, and It's always bugged me to make him attacking things because it looks like he's blindly swiping at whatever next to him rather than what's in front of him, so this rob is clearly looking in one direction.

Woah, a double post, unpossible!
Anyway. Ive decided to really start fleshing out the world of Rob and Jack, which Iv'e named Etov. I finally got around to actually defining the major dieties, and here they are.

Religion of Etov

Religion in Etov focuses around one of several deities. Each deity has many names, depending on the culture, and is therefore reffered to with a general term rather than a proper noun. In addition, each diety has an area, a climate, that they hold sway over, and a Material that is associated with them. All Dieties are Amoral and so there are no good or evil gods.
Clerics: Dieties in Etov aren’t big on giving orders, so Clerics generally just try to exemplify their deity’s values as best they can. Because this is a somewhat general goal, wars between clerics of the same diety are fairly common, as they disagree on what methods best represent these values.
The Dieties
Sun: Sun (Or Solam) is the deity of Truth and of patterns. It is the provider that makes life possible. At the same time, it is harsh and destructive. It helps, but goes down every day so as to ensure that the world learns how to adapt without it’s light. The Sun has dominance over the desert and it’s material is glass, a material which hides nothing.
Shadow: Shadow is the deity of Consistency and Concealment. It hides all within it and remains so until disturbed. Clerics of Shadow reveal little and maintain the status quo until forced to do otherwise. Shadow has dominance over subterranean areas, places where it’s presence is undisputed and omnipresent. It’s material is stone, unchanging and hiding all.
Fire: Fire is the deity of civilization, of nature tamed, controlled and made more efficient. Fire was tamed by the intelligent race of the world, and forms the foundation of all society. Like civilization, it attempts to spread and requires a constant supply in order to exist. Clerics of Fire attempt to improve and streamline everything they see. Fire has dominance over fertile plains, areas where civilization thrives and nature has been tamed. Fire’s material is Steel, raw unfinished product worked and refined into something efficient.
Water: Water is the deity of trust, expertise, and separation. Water is necessary to all life, yet under it’s waves things are dramatically different. Those who live and work with water must accept it’s ways and master it’s rules. They must trust it or else they can never reap it’s benefits. Clerics of Water tend to separate things according to their purpose, they tend to trust their allies and prefer specialization over generalization. Water has dominance over islands and oceans, it’s material is coral.
Beast: Beast represents competition, struggle, survival, and initiative. The Beast goes out and does what it must, it competes against others for material gain or dominance. It seeks to control territory, either through reputation or strength. It encourages struggle for survival and making use of the defeated. Immediate and decisive action, and wasting nothing is the way of the Beast. Clerics of the beast tend to be assertive and decisive. They enjoy competition and will always attempt to gain dominance, though they will obey those who gain their respect. They are ashamed of defeat and have trouble compromising. The Beast has dominance over badlands and infertile plains, areas where the struggle to survive is at it’s highest. The Beast’s material is bone.
Plant: Plant represents inaction. Passive growth and experimentation. Plant attempts to succeed everywhere, although it is quick to abandon futile efforts. Plant rarely makes the first move, instead taking advantage of benefits as they come, resisting challenges, and recovering from problems. Clerics of Plant will always choose to let things change on their own rather than bring about change themselves. Plant’s Material is wood.

One of these days I'll get all my fluff entries together and put them on the first post. Voting is still open by the way.

The Good Doctor is going to blast the Shadows. What should Jack do
1) Attack the Shadows
2) Attempt to Stop the Portal
3) Attempt to Trace the Portal
4) Attempt to hold the Portal open

It should be noted that Long-distance teleportation is outside of Jack's specialty. Stopping the Portal (In such a way that would not result in Rob's nasty demise) Is the most difficult option. Tracing the Portal is the easiest.

Oh come on! Your fanbase has enough tropers to be aware that the most dificult option is always the only one which even has a chance at succeding, especially if it endangers the life of somebody whose name is in the title.

The easiest option always fails and the most difficult option always succeeds... unless it's a subversion. Therefore, there's only one think for it. Set course for Medium Difficulty!

Option 4.

It appears to be a portal made of Shadow though, and there's Laughing Shadows in the area. Perhaps they could mess with it... unless they're not exactly Shadow, but something made to *look* like Shadow so people waste Holy spells on them.

I think I may make the next comic tonight, Current Votes
Option 1: 1
2: 1
3: 1
4: 4

Oh, and concerning the Shadows. They are hurt more by light magic(note, not Holy magic, as such a thing dosn't exist. Oscar worships Sun, so I guess his "Holy Magic" Would be Light, but for, say, a cleric of Fire their holy magic would be fire) more than other types. However, the visual manifestation of the Portal would depend on the caster who created it (Or, if they are a Spell Mage, the True Mage that designed whichever spell they memorized).

@v I might do that tonight instead. I dunno.

A Note on Portals

There is a phenomonon with certain types of portals, If somebody enters from the exit who did not come through the entrance, that person will not originate at the portal's other opening, instead they will float around whatever demiplane the portal is routing through until they find a point where the fabric has weakened, they will fall through and end up in the general viscinity of wherever the Portal opened up. Every portal except those crafted by true masters has such weakenesses, though the don't do anything unless somthing falls through (Or crawls through, depending on what demiplane you routed through). This portal has more than normal on account of Jack's tampering.

Next update will likely appear soonish, in the meantime, as always, comments are appreciated.
