So there's a lady in our group who basically attends for the social aspects of the game rather than the actual gameplay, right? No problem there - so long as everyone's having fun, that's fine. The problem is that the class she's chosen to play is the single most needlessly complicated class I've ever seen: the True Freaking Necromancer. During our games, all she does is scan through her spell list, find things that sound interesting ("Ooh! 'Horrid Wilting'! I use that.'), and leave the actual figuring-out-what-the-spells-do to the rest of us.

She also has a tendency to summon single zombies to fight giant bosses.

The class really isn't a good fit for her, so what we're planning to do is give her a character that retains the flavor she's after but better suits her playing style. Ideally, that would mean a necromancer-type who doesn't have any spells - maybe Warlock-style invocations would be the ticket - and a beefy zombie or two who level with her and can be summoned and dismissed at will. Can anyone here offer some ideas?

A Warlock with The Dead Walks and some of the more morbid Invocations (such as Eldrich Essences which act as debuuffs) would work well. If there aren't enough suitable Invocations, you could let her use some Wizard spells as Invocations.

You need necroey invocations? fear not, smart thog is here!

Soul torturing blast
Blast shape, Evil
Dark, necromancry
Spell equivilent level 9

This horrid invocation turns your elderitch ray into a soul torturing blast, which deals 1d3 points of int, wis, or cha in addition to the normal damage. In addition, any creature killed by this blast is bound to the next Specialized onxy stone to touch it (the stone costs 1000 gp per hit dice of creature, if does not cost enough it will not work on the creature.) A creautere bound in a onxy stone cannot be raised or rezzed until the stone is smashed. A stone may hold a number of souls equal to your HD.

Warlock with deadwalk is perfect. Also, if she takes leadership or undead leadership, she can get a nice and powerful undead minion. If she really wants it to be mindless, she can probably talk to you about getting a huge zombie or skeleton rather than a sentient companion.
If this doesn't work, you could try giving her a sorcerer with a lot of really similar spells. That way, she would just kind of be an off-brand wizard with less spells to thumb through.
