50th Comic 10/02/2008

Anyway, for our 50th comic we're making a very special Fan Mail Comic! We need questions so please send yours into [email protected], we'll select a few questions from the ones we recieve. Also, please use an alias (like Dave from Washington etc.). Real name and location or fake, it doesn't matter.

Oh, phew! I got a little nervous when I saw that thread number 1 was locked. :smalleek:

Likewise, though for a second I had the crazy idea you might have gotten your own website...:smalltongue:

The thread actually got 5 pages past the limit before the mods caught on apparently.

I've got a minor question: do Drow age at the same rate as humans in this comic? I'm assuming they do due to the character's ages, but I thought I'd check.

Bayar
2008-02-18, 07:53 AM
yes they do...wow...this is the X time someone asked the question...Undertaker, you could put that somewhere in the bio, like an *

Tempest Fennac
2008-02-18, 08:40 AM
Sorry about that (I'd only been checking the other thrad fo updates, and I didn't have any reason to believe that Drows aged differently in this comic until now).

Lyinginbedmon
2008-02-18, 08:49 AM
I think the present wording will still cause confusion, since 55 human years is still a traditional childhood age for Drow. Perhaps something along the lines of "*In the setting of Failing Saves, Drow age at the same rate as humans"

Yay, new thread!

The note at the top of the bios helps (didn't know that myself) and the way it's worded shouldn't cause any confusion.

Howdy, I thought now would be a nice time to start dedicating things.

I'd like to dedicate the whole Failing Saves universe to my Dad, who sadly passed away 4 years ago today. It just so happens he gave me this (terrible) sense of humour and I think I wouldn't be making this comic if it wasn't for his influence.

So thanks for all your comments on the comic, and keep reading. :smallwink:

Korul is gonna get it hard from Gilph, I can tell you that.

And why exactly is Lox letting him do it??
I don't think she would just let some drow do that.

Grah, sorry for the lack of updates. But we have a good reason that you'll like!

Aswell as the latest episode, we are re-releasing the first 3 comics. Don't worry, not in any new styles. We're just cleaning them up. Booting out my terrible grammar and such. We promise that this time around the episodes will be so much better, as for the first time Salmon and myself have really started a more open, co-operative approach. Rather than the "You art, me script. All happy. Ya?". For instance, Salmon has let me draw lots of backdrops, and I'm letting Salmon take the comedy bat to my scripts. I'd have to say this is the most fun I've had making the comic so far. :smallwink:

Most words ending in unstressed -our in the United Kingdom (e.g., colour, flavour, honour, armour) end in -or in the United States (i.e., color, flavor, honor, armor). Where the vowel is unreduced, this does not occur: contour, paramour, troubadour, are spelled thus everywhere. Most words of this category derive from Latin non-agent nouns having nominative -or; the first such borrowings into English were from early Old French and the ending was -or or -ur.[17] After the Norman Conquest, the termination became -our in Anglo-French in an attempt to represent the Old French pronunciation of words ending in -or.[18] The -our ending was not only retained in English borrowings from Anglo-French, but also applied to earlier French borrowings.[19] After the Renaissance, some such borrowings from Latin were taken up with their original -or termination; many words once ending in -our (for example, chancellour and governour) now end in -or everywhere. Many words of the -our/-or group do not have a Latin counterpart; for example, armo(u)r, behavio(u)r, harbo(u)r, neighbo(u)r; also arbo(u)r meaning "shelter", though senses "tree" and "tool" are always arbor, a false cognate of the other word. Some 16th and early 17th century British scholars indeed insisted that -or be used for words of Latin origin and -our for French loans; but in many cases the etymology was not completely clear, and therefore some scholars advocated -or only and others -our only.[20]

Webster's 1828 dictionary featured only -or and is generally given much of the credit for the adoption of this form in the US. By contrast, Dr Johnson's 1755 dictionary used the -our spelling for all words still so spelled in Britain, as well as for emperour, errour, governour, horrour, tenour, terrour, and tremour, where the u has since been dropped. Johnson, unlike Webster, was not an advocate of spelling reform and for the most part simply recorded what he found. For example, documents [2] from the Old Bailey, the foremost court in London, support the view of the OED that by the 17th century "colour" was the settled spelling. Those English speakers who began to move across the Atlantic would have taken these habits with them and H L Mencken makes the point that, "honor appears in the Declaration of Independence, but it seems to have got there rather by accident than by design. In Jefferson’s original draft it is spelled honour. " [3] Examples such as color, flavor, behavior, harbor, or neighbor scarcely appear in the Old Bailey's court records from the 17th and 18th century, whereas examples of their -our counterparts are generally numbered in hundreds. One notable exception is honor: honor and honour were equally frequent down to the 17th century,[21] Honor still is, in the UK, the normal spelling as a person's name.

Sorta... If a piece broke off near the tip, then it would fly away, so yes it would, but if it was a crack in the middle, perhaps it flexxed back then with the momentum, it would fold over at the point of impact, cracking the way it did... (I think...)

Well, even if they hadn't edited the first few strips, it would still have made sense. Korul had merely pondered what their mother (and father) would have thought of their career choices. It didn't hint at her being alive.

Yeah, there are two ways to make army strips.

The first and most obvious is to simply repeat a single character design, this is the case with virtually all of the army strips I've done in Remember so far.
The second and most difficult to do is to make a number of different designs utilising the military units involved. This can then be used to produce an army of unique character designs (The most difficult possible) or repeated to give variation (A combination of method #1 and #2) in a large group.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Ultimately they're both very time consuming.

Sepia is a bit tricky to do in InkScape though, first you need to make the comic and then import the exported file into another art program that does support sepia, and then you get blurring if you try to reimport it into another InkScape file.

There is a minor caveat on the use of Rich's characters... I believe you can have an OOTS character make a cameo appearance, but not have them as part of your main storyline.

Belkar appears in Failing Saves on a wanted poster, and Elan has a brief appearance in Whitefeather (I think).

For this reason, I propose... to create a time machine which would allow us to go in the future, steal all of the future comics, and then come back, freeze time, and read them. Have a sort of Failing Saves Art contest, where participants make fanart in the form of a short comic, and the winner gets... I'm not sure... something cool. The judges are Undertaker and Salmon.

I dunno... I was sorta rambling up there... but it would be a fun idea... (Although I sorta suck at making Failing Saves characters...) It would just be something in the Failing Saves universe. (That has to do with it... roughly)

Also, great comic. One of my favourites so far.

I don't think it's happening yet, I guess people who want to do it say that they do. Then guess when the work will be in by (so that people without much time don't feel pressured) and then just post it...

Lack of a scanner added to the fact that I only know how to draw with a pencil and paper are the only things keeping me from having a lot of fun with this. *headdesk*

Great idea, though!

Inkscape is free, and all it takes is a little practice to get really goood

Well, technically that's false, because "getting really good" would imply talent beyond the mean for the medium.

However, it only takes a little practice to become competent with InkScape, and a lot of practice to become great. Failing Saves, for example, would rank as great artwork, whilst the skills gained from Trazoi's marvellous guide are typically average grade (Because everyone learns from it these days, after all)

Sorry for the double post. Just to say that I have removed the "Maps" section of the Announcements post and I have replaced it with "Little Oaktown Museum"!

This new section will have maps, trinkets, and lore from the Failing Saves world. Currently there are only 2 items in the museum as the Curator has misplaced his glasses and can't find anything in the Cupboard Of Antiques! But it will slowly fill as things come to surface. :smallwink:

Who's hair resemblance? I'd imagine Kerdir protects Lox because he's been her teacher for eight years. That's plenty of time to form a bond, even if she isn't his child.

Will you then explain to me why is his wife mad at him?

Because, as far as I can see, Kerdir has the hair resemblance of the three guys.
Korul's ponytail, Delrek's hairdo, and Lox's ...
forehair?
(I don't know how do you call it, but let's say it's the three little hairs in the forehead).

And, as you can see, the girl he's with is also a human...

Anything else I don't know?

Lunaya

I highly doubt that Kerdir would be cheating on his wife (the whole Lawful Good thing coupled with the fact that he's not a @$$hole). I think Amweth was just overreacting. Besides, the chick Kerdir was talking to was an elf. Lox is human.

The only one who really bares any resemblance to Kerdir is Delrek. Wavy hair is a genetic trait. Ponytails are simply a fashion choice. (Delrek looks like Kerdir. Korul acts like him.)

As for the bangs, I've noticed a lot of the characters have that. It's simply a piece of hair that, for whatever reason, strays from the rest.

Hee, I like debating this stuff.

Okay, you need to work on your spot checks...
It's OBVIOUS that Kerdir was talking to an Elf, and you can see the meaning of the phrase his wife uses.

But, I think that if you see and actually notice Kerdir's, Lox's, Delrek's, and Korul's hair, you'll see the hair resemblance I'm talking about.
Unite delrek's wavy hair, Korul's Ponytail, and yet, you won't get Kerdir completely, but if you add the two little hairs coming out of Lox's head, you'll have one Kerdir's head.

And I never denied that Lox is human.
