Yes, it's yet another webcomic inspired by OotS. So sue me! :smallamused:

The updates will not be regular, and I expect a frequency of about one comic per week. I'll be going for quality rather than quantity, and Real Life is not exactly boring right now either, what with having to write down my PhD and all.

Latest Comic: #9

It's probably worth mentioning that banners can't be higher than 120 pixels, those top at 166

Ah? For which definition of "banner" is that? Usage in sigs?

Can you point me to the ruling?

Or if that's a secret, that's fine, I was just wondering.

@ Mee: She's a wild elf.

Looks like it could be good.
I know what it's like to have cramped banners - I had to cut out half of a really good banner for the Silliad 'cus it wouldn't fit. :smallsigh:

Catharsis

@ Nameless: I posted the links above each banner. Also, I corrected the inexplicable woeful absence of trees in the last banner.

The file names include a few hints about the character names, so I might as well post them:

- Master Udaf, dwarf
- Sir Leotardo "Leo" di Quinterra, human
- Aiven of the Shivering Lake, wild elf
- Ginver Thein, whisper gnome

Thats like the Arch-Mage one.
Took me a while to get that. You're right, the Yorn comic uses the same plot device, even down to the color scheme. Scary! Or rather, bad timing. I drew the comic on Thursday night (right through the wee hours), and the idea has been lying around in my plot plan for three weeks before that.

It's actually a tip of the hat to my first DM, who tended to threaten anyone who peeked behind his DM screen with blue bolts of death from the sky.

That seems to be an established meme in D&D. I wonder if there's a line in the DMG that specifically recommends blue lightning bolts for that occasion. :smallwink:

Thanks, I actually pasted a few original OotS panels next to my character studies to get the proportions and expressions right. I realized a sobering amount of mistakes I've been doing with my previous attempts at OotS style (cf. the googly-eyed Knight of Dol Amroth avatar).

Long knives. They count as short swords, but do slashing damage, like the wakizashi. The DM houseruled them into existence on her player's request, for style reasons. :smallwink:

Well as a player of serval DnD computer games (neverwinter nights, baldurs gate etc, etc) im used to walk around with every new party member some time before a new member is introduced to the party.

This isn't bad. Very good art. But I wish it updated more than once a week.

The worst game I've ever played in (where the DM's whole point was to pull the carpet from under us in the end in a "rocks fall, everybody dies" lose-lose scenario) had us meeting up on the road. The encounter kind of went like this.

"Hi."
"Hi."
"So you guys want to adventure together?"
"OK.

(Head to bar, receive highly questionable mission)

I wish now I had asked the stupid bartender why he even gave two ****s about recovering a holy symbol from some demon.

So we have a Human Paladin
Cleric. Hence the comment about full casters. To his credit, he's staying away from Divine Metamagic, though.

a Gnome Beguiler
Though you can't tell with certainty from the comic (her skin is a bit greyish), she is actually a Whisper Gnome.

a Dwarf Conjurer
Very much so. He took the Focused Specialist alternate class feature from PHB II and went into the Master Specialist prestige class as soon as possible. The man just likes his conjurations. :smallwink:

and an Elf Fighter with a couple Swordsage levels.
She is a Wildelf Ranger 3/Swordsage 2, ready for the Wildrunner prestige class.

Clearly we're pointing towards illusion magic.
Udaf tossed out a Prestidigitation, which is universal... he might actually have banned the illusion school! Who knows? (I wasn't going to, but I haven't decided yet... and with Ginver in the group, it's not that much of a loss... but which wizard would give up Mirror Image and Invisibility if he didn't have to?)

Nice selection of characters in this party! Most of them quite the surprise. I never expected Leo to be a Cleric or Udaf a Caster or even Ginver being a rogue'ish character. Can't wait to see a strips that deals with their respective alignments. If Leo was lawful good and Ginver being any form of evil would be too easy... hmm

Catharsis, you should also consider redrawing your forum avatar. One that reflects your current skill in [Craft: Epic OOTS-style Webcomic]. It looks so good that Rich might wanna watch his back. But you still give it its own distinct look by using gradients to increase visual depth and atmosphere in the scenery.

I'll just say that much: I don't think evil characters have a place in a D&D party. It works exceedingly well with Belkar, but only because Rich makes it work. If it weren't for a series of coincidental circumstances, he'd be a villain by now. That's Rich's thing, it would be rather lame to copy it.

Of course you're right. Evil characters in a largely Good or Neutral group is mostly a complete disaster, especially Chaotic Evil ones whom just like Belkar usually translate into full-blown raging psychos that choose to attack everything the group encounters. I would however argue that an Lawful Evil character is doable in a sense. Scheming and manipulating the unwitting good guys to his/her own ends like some unusual stock character.

New Avatar rawks, keep it up.

Hoplite, they're called conquistador (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conquistador). Tricky spelling innit?

It's a bit of an anachronism, but hey, they have dinosaurs, too. :smallwink: I was originally going to give Leo an Italian accent, but found that it made his quip in the banner (about Mr. Wight) even harder to understand, so I dropped it. Too bad I don't get to end a strip with things going horribly wrong and Leo saying "Crappa." :smalltongue:

I also tried to made the mace look post-mediaeval. I would have given him a schiavona or a partisan if it had fit the build. Don't know about the shield, though. Did they even use shields in those ages?

Catharsis

Don't, it happened to other people too. I presume "natural twenty" would have been more obvious, but less fitting for the reality of adventuring life. :smallyuk:

There is also an alternate interpretation available: Aiven, the point-of-view character of the comic, is the only wilderness-oriented hero in a party of otherwise very urban people. You could say she is the "natural one" of the party. But you should say that very quietly and far away from her. She has keen ears.

I thought it was spelled out with letters to create a pun ie: the fact that she is a wild elf and expected to be a nature lover... unless I'm reading too much into the title (I didn't realize it was referencing a dice roll until the phrase appeared in the comic tho'...)

On an unrelated note, you have managed to make your characters so fresh looking while remaining in the style that it was kinda shocking to see those very OOTS-y goblins. So Kudos for that too.

Wow. I'd just like to add that this is probably one of the best drawn OotS-style webcomics on the boards - I'd say it's between you and Anti-Heroes, with Failing Saves coming in as a close second. AH is closer to canon OotS style, but your stuff is so nicely detailed... aargh! I can't decide! Regardless, my art pales in comparison to your mastery of everything awesome. Of course, there's one comic that has yet to come (not mine) that could compete with you all, but then - I'm just biased.

WOW.

I just saw #6, and got blown away by how superb it is. This is one of my favorite pages so far--and with the quality of your work so far, that's saying something. Everything was done right for this page:

The art seems even better than normal; possibly due to the variety of well-drawn expressions, and the great spell effects (especially the lesser orb of acid)
Multiple amusing gags throughout
Continuity with the optimized party theme, also seen throughout
Spot-on timing

Is it bad that I'm looking forward to your next issue more than the Giant's?

The current TV show theme leaves me less than enthousiastic as well. I preferred Belkar's gnome-slaying (take that, people who still believed Belkar was not evil!) and wouldn't mind seeing the seaborne part of the party again.

Heh, I have a focused conjurer with that on his list. Having played a beguiler, and with one in the campaign I'm DMing (neither one a whispergnome, sadly), I couldn't miss Ginver's Glitterdust either. I do appreciate how the casters haven't used any ineffective spells, (and then there's the cure wand).

As for the monsters, I'll guess Lizardfolk, Ghasts, Giant Crocodiles, and Trolls.

Speaking of effectiveness, a blob of acid is not generally considered the pinnacle of wizardry. However, it visually worked out better than other spells would have. Imagine a giant crocodile slipping on Grease! And sometimes a few HP make all the difference.

Ghouls, actually, otherwise Leo would be hard-pressed to make that turn check. As for the Lizardfolk, the color scheme and body shape doesn't quite fit. Here's a hint though: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/MM35_gallery/MM35_PG246b.jpg

It's probably just the players involved, but I have not seen a single case of a rock gnome being roleplayed better than a whispergnome. Every player with a whispergnome has made their character an outstandingly fun individual to have in a group. Meanwhile, the rock gnomes tended to get on everyone's nerves. Regardless, this thread wasn't made to argue the virtues of various gnome subraces; if you want to continue, let's take it to Gaming.

@Tired N' Drowzy: I agree. It's rather shameless. :smallconfused:

Re Whisper Gnomes: They are indeed a bit too good to be true. As a DM, I'd probably tone them down a bit, reducing the skill bonuses to the usual +2 and outright dropping the Silence ability. Flavor-wise, I certainly find them far preferable over standard gnomes, who are just silly and annoying. Wizards did right in removing them from the 4e player races and making them a "mahnster", as in the cartoon (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/toon/20071219a). :smallamused:

@Caracol: Yes, I corrected it... not fast enough, it seems. Thanks for the pointer. As for backgrounds, in most cases I just use three slightly uneven bands for the ground, the shrubbery, and the background forest (or sky), each with a simple horizontal gradient in the fill color. The foreground objects that make the landscape less boring are also very basic drawings -- I've actually been using the same bunch of grass in all 7 issues, just slightly stretched or mirrored to look different from the other instances in the same scenery. I've even been to lazy to draw a new tree outline in the current issue and re-used earlier ones.

Wreckingrocc
2008-04-06, 05:53 PM
Since my comics are currently taking place in a forest, I think it would be a good time to point out that I am essentially also using Catharsis's trees slightly modified and color-changed over and over again. The forest effect is cool though, especially at night-time.

I forgot to mention that it happened twice (dying and being raised once in a session could happen, while I think it's more uncommon to die for falling from a tree, being raised, die for a undead dragon's tail attack and be raised again...)

I usually don't get to play NPCs while I'm dead, but I play some NPCs when I don't actively partecipate to the campaign: I study in a city far away from my hometown, so when I come back for small periods of time (like 3-4 days) it's difficult to join campaigns already started, so I play the NPCs that the DM needs, with some freedom of roleplay and character creation, with the purpose of being a pain in the ass for the players :smallamused: ....

Your comic keeps kicking ass. As a Natural Sciences student, I approve the geologist jokes (altough they are all untranslatable in italian).

Keep up the good work!

Cortana is the AI that runs around with Master Chief in the Xbox game Halo. She tends to point out the obvious... the cave in question was regularly shaped with metallic panels so... yea... not a natural formation.

Heh, thanks for the heads-up. I have submitted my PhD now and must prepare for my defense on the 28th. Also, I have to write a 10-page proceedings paper in the same time span. :smalleek: At least the paper writing is going surprisingly well, I can basically rip pieces from my PhD and boil them down to the essential points.

They are the only cool gnomes. They are especially stealthy, and very mechanically powerful. You can find them in Races of Stone.

Perhaps the potential for a +17 on your Hide checks, at level 1? [Edit: That should be +20, if you took Skill Focus: Hide. +4 Racial, +4 Size, +5 Dex, +4 Ranks, +3 Skill Focus.] Strongheart Halflings are top-notch, of course, but Whispergnomes are just as competitive (that wonderful +2 Con -2 Cha advantage over Strongheart Halflings comes to mind, among other things. Yes, there are other things.). A lot of people think that Whispergnomes should be a +1 LA race, although the same isn't that true for Strongheart Halflings.

Actually +20 isn't all you can get upto. With a a little use of (2) flaws and a trait I've had +29... Shape Soulmeld (Kruthik Claws) for another +4 and then stealthy as feats from the flaws, and then the illiterate trait taking the +1 on hide. And then a masterwork tool of hide. 50 gp for +2 to any skill check... Lovely. Course this is slightly cheesed... Toss on dark template for real laughs... Hide in Plain sight, and another untyped increase to hide for just +1 LA.

It's a shame that Catharsis has taken a vow of silence, because this was a great comic. Terrific artwork, cool characters, great humor, and it was only nine strips in. The only webcomics I follow now are Order of the Stick, Goblins, Anti-Heroes, and the new Darkhallow Chronicles. Failing Saves seems fairly dead, Banjo1985's comic (can't recall it's name now) is dead, and Natural One is at -8 and bleeding and The Gremlin just attempted to coup de grace it.

Still around, just very busy. Turns out spending 5 hours on a comic isn't the first thing in my mind during vacations. Especially when there's a heated outdoor pool available. :P

I'm currently packing up my stuff at the old institute and preparing myself for the move to Heidelberg. Also, I have a conference next week for which I still have to print a poster.

I'll try to resume the comic when the dust settles, but no guarantees for now.
